  • Gisborne City Council and the New Zealand Geographical Board are considering whether to change the name Poverty Bay back to the original Tūranganui-a-Kiwa after a petition initiated by Kaiti School in 2013. Master carver Aturangi Nepia-Clamp and retiree Mike Mulrooney debate the issue. Teacher Ani Te Kani and pupil Connor Paenga talk about the history of the area, the impact of colonialism and James Cook's arrival in the Endeavour. (12 January 2019 the final decision made opting for the dual name, Tūranganui-a-Kiwa / Poverty Bay). ➡️ SUBSCRIBE: / @thehuinewzealand

As a pakeha New Zealander who was born on the west coast of the South Isiand from Engish parents but grew up in Gisborne I am proud to identify that Turanganui-a-kiwa is my turangawaiwai. This is were I grew up and I identify Turanganui-a-kiwa as the place that I identify as my home. Not Poverty Bay.

When captain cook arrived in Uawa Tolaga bay his crew were dying of scurvy, some already passed away.
The local Maori introduced the native beach spinach to them.
Cook wrote in his journal how quickly they recovered, even the ones so close to death he thought it was unreversable.
Now the native plant is known as cooks scurvy grass.instead of the native name.

If it wasn't for Queen Victoria Maoris wouldn't be here today as Maoris were eating each other and dieing.
Maoris asked Queen Victoria for help to survive otherwise Maoris wouldn't be here today.
      So Maoris owe Europeans everything.
Maoris are also not native to New Zealand that is all lies Maoris migrated in from South East Asia it is not there land or anything else for that matter.
Maoris are migrants there were meany other people living in New Zealand way before Maoris landed on the shores of nz only 650 years ago.

Call it what you like - do you really think its going to make the place prosper?!?! - every 2nd shop down Gladstone rd is empty. The CBD is full of homeless folk, pissing in doorways, leaving their sleeping gear & shopping trolleys full of stuff there while they go bludge a few bucks off people. Its full of run-down, depressing old soviet looking buildings. The roads are completely fkd, The coast is P-ridden & its not going to recover anytime soon - if ever. The beaches are raped of Paua & crays. Theres 2 big clocks in town - neither tell the right time. We get cruise ships - that pull up right next to a log yard full of dust & bark, very much an industrial area. As soon as the tourists get across the bridge into town the beggars are on them - ive even hear some comment "what the hell did they bring us to this dump for?" Since the Freezing works, Watties etc closed, this town has gone steadily backwards. I could write more, plenty more, but I think ive described it pretty well - the place is a disgrace & we also have racial division pushing it even further in reverse. It was nothing like this in the 70s - early 80s. Seriously considering getting out of the dive that Gisbourne is.

"Has unpleasant feelings" - toward a certain demographic. Te Atu - stop blaming all white skinned people for the actions of those who were in no way, shape or form related to the perpetrators. If a White person were to have "unpleasant feelings" toward maori due to the actions of other Maori, then it would be labeled for exactly what it is - racism. Not only that, they would be branded far right. Once again, a 2 tier attitude.
