    lothern seaguard are the most laughable unit ever made in a TW game as far as campaign goes. for their cost, you can litteraly build a triangular fortress of them, a couple of sister of averlorn in the middle and a flanking unit of choice... put the entire formation on guard/autofire, go and get some coffee and come back to your victory screen .. if the enemy somehow gets past 15 units of arrow cheese they just get to the formation to see a bunch of dudes chuck their bows on the floor and just randomly turn in to nextgen spearmen that when upgraded can apparently dodge more than sigvald ... and they cost less than a bunch of peacocks with plastic axes that wear a white lion shawl as a statement to prove to people that they can actually kill something... just not on the battlefield

      @@mrwhosaskin179 Early game I absolutely agree. but when comparing statistics, Lothern seaguard (shielded) boast higher Defence, attack and weapon damage to a normal spear unit. Their arrows also hit as hard as a normal archer with 20 less range. They are total beasts. My personal doomstack army (for playing instead of auto attack) is 3 sisters 6 Lothern 3 ballistas 1 Star Dragon 2 Swordmasters 1 Spearmen (RoR I forget their name for the 12% dmg reduction) 1 LL 1 Mage and 1 Pheonix guard Leaving 1 slot open for.. whatever I need. This army with a set up as follows. 2 lothern seaguard with the RoR spearmen in the center. These 3 Make a very strong front line. Behind them about 10-20 yards to allow for cavalry/monsterous charge line disruption, your 3 Sisters. To their sides about 20-30 yards away are 1 Lothern seaguard on each flank which stop cavalry but also most importantly leave a gap for your Sword masters to get a clear charge to the front line. Just behind the sisters, but still inside the positioning of the lothern seaguards. Position 1 sword master on each side. This keeps them way out of any potential missile threats during inital engagement, but they can get in to the fighting incredibly quickly (which is key) in the center behind the sisters is where the pheonix guard goes. Yet again, totaly out of any missile range, and perfectly positioned to cockblock anything that might get through incredibly fast. At the back is your line of artillery, protected by the last two lothern seaguard, who also offer missile support to anything in front of them. This kind of tactic with Highelves, utilises all tiers of the high elf army, whilst also offering multiple layers of deffence against missile and cavalry approaches. at any given time you will also have 5-6 missile units going totaly ham and having plenty of room to breath with your elite infantry as they are incredibly safe from any sort of missile unit. Your 3 Artillery also allow for a competetive/dominating artillary match up against most armies u would face in the campain. and the extra slot offers some felxibility to whatever you need. wether its cavalry or more fire power :D Hope this gives some inspiration

      @@Haarsgard after u lvl up ur lord lothern with shields have like 60 armor and 86 melee def making them extremely good for both archering and fighting up front . For me a very good general use campaign army (excluding the very powerful sisters spam) is ,Tyrion or a melee lord atleast on a horse , a hero either a handmaiden or a magic user , 3-4 units of phoenix guard , 7-8 units of lother shields 1 eagle bolt thrower( for insta sieges/siege cheesing) 1 dragon prince and the rest sisters ( which u can still ditch some lothern for more sisters) . This comp for me has excellent versatility and i dont really struggle with anything apart from rarely losing a 7 exp unit (phoenix guard are kinda irreplaceable and prone to be the first to get a unit wipe). I liked this presentation a lot.
    One thing I thought was strange, however, was the mention of archers and their "considerable" use on tabletop. I played High Elves during the 6th/7th/8th editions and from my experience and the experience of many others, it was more cost effective to spend the 100/100/70 points on a Repeater Bolt Thrower (6 shots at S4, armor saves at -2) vs spending 120/110/100 points on 10 archers (10 shots at S3 IF in the appropriate formation or position), especially after the removal of shooting in 2 ranks from 5th edition, an ability which wasn't returned to the High Elves' toolbox until 8th edition.
    Most players I knew filled up their Core requirements with Silver Helms (mainly 6th edition) and Spearmen (mainly 7th and 8th edition).
    This is also the first time I've heard of the Dark Elves being the overall better matchup against the High Elves on tabletop. The Dark Elves were basically a broken army in 6th edition until their 6th edition addendum, and in 7th/8th edition the High Elves' Speed of Asuryan ability was an enormous advantage.

    One thing to ad why in some occasions the regular spear/archer unit is a better choice than seaguard: when you play at unit scale maxed out, that extra soldiers in those units vs a lothern could make a big difference. Lothern is a great unit,but doesn not have the same amount of men as a regular spear/archer. (and more elves means more arrows,and at a better range :more damage for your points vs for the spears more men equals longer time to get to that 50%) Just wanted to point that out.

    very surprised you didnt have star dragon on this list, unlike most massive monsters of a similar price it aaalways pays for itself especially when HE dont have terror causing units apart from dragons. The breath can delete huge clumps of high tier infantry and they can snipe heroes and lords pretty easily as well. Also the fact that you can get one super cheap on your lord if you take a prince or princess

  • @sirknight3180
    @sirknight3180 Před 4 lety

    For me personally, i divide my military into 2 parts, The Army and The Navy. The way i comprise my armies is to get 4 units of swordmasters of hoeth, 7 units of spearmen cause they can be the frontline, then ill get 1 lord and 1 hero, ill get 1 unit of eagle artillery, 4 units of light armour archers, and 2 flying monsters of choice. Of course you can always change up the army composition dependent on the faction your facing, but this is my general comp. For my Navy, *Lothern Sea Guards(shielded) * ill get about 14 of them, then i get 2 swordmasters, then i get 2 flying monsters of choice, and 1 lord and 1 hero. The reason why i make my navy most comprised of Lothern Sea Guards(shielded) is cause in the seas, you never really know what your gonna face, like say you come across some treasure and it unlocks a mission, the mission is to defeat army but you dont know what faction it was and how to adjust accordingly, so with the lothern sea guards im always ready for what outs there. Another example is when an enemy horde faction suddenly declares war on you and chases your ship down.

    I personally love the lothern sea guard with shields, they get dual bonuses from your lords abilities (provided you chose them) and can really shine for not a ton of money, early game they just wreck and even in later game, they are very good at being plug ins wherever needed. On siege defenses they are amazing, having them up on your wall firing down with their range, and then able to dual purpose and hold off the towers at the same time, no need to swap your melee for archer units up front, which is great to be able to focus elsewhere.

  • @kaleidoscope3234

    Kinda disappointed that you didn't mention the star dragon or moon dragon. Those beast wiped out entire unit of inf extremely efficient and quickly and protect your rear from cavalry. I had bad time in campaign against Skaven and their artillery and the dragons solved most of my issues. But I agree with Elyrian Reavers on the top list, the archer version of Elyrian Reavers saved my campaign in the most desperate moments. I found Lothern Sea Guard to be capable of doing both Spearmen and Archer's job just fine. Their shorter range is enough to handle with basically any skirmisher in the game and allow them to weed out enemy melee and hold their ground just as good as Spearmen. Archer range is great but they are such a huge pain when you try to protect them from heavy cav, while with an army of Lothern Sea Guards you don't have to protect their rear if you don't have any.

      I use spearmen as my frontline for soaking up enemy arrows and charges, while the lothern sea guard form the second line and flanking duties for some nice flank shots. Can bring any of them into melee to support spearmen when needed, which they will be. Kinda like the hastati/principes/triarii thing the Romans had going on. Good enough for early game anyway

  • @rodh1404
    @rodh1404 Před 5 lety

    In custom battles, you're right that both Spearmen and Lothern Sea Guard with Shields are good choices. I'd probably favor the Sea Guard simply because they have a way to contribute to the battle even if the opponent doesn't close with them, but if the opponent is going to close in, the Spearmen are more cost effective. For campaign, I'd recommend replacing those Spearmen with a mix of Sea Guards with Shields and Phoenix Guard as soon as possible in your main stacks.
    While the Swordmasters of Hoeth are good, I think the more cost effective choice is White Lions of Chrace. The White Lions have fairly similar stats and are actually better at handling missile fire than the Swordmasters thanks to their 30% missile resistance. While the Swordmasters are better in absolute terms, I'd rather spend those extra 450 points somewhere else in competitive battles, and I don't see a lot of point to either of these units in campaign.
    To me, Dragon Princes are just too expensive considering they have low AP damage and no way to negate physical resistance. This is one case where I'd suggest spending a bit more and getting a Sun Dragon instead. That gives you a strong AP attack that will defeat physical resistance (because they're flaming attacks), and it's a faster unit with the added maneuverability of flight. You also get a useful ranged attack. The Fireborn RoR solves the physical resist problem, but they're 200 points more expensive than the default Sun Dragon, still don't do much AP damage and don't come with the Sun Dragon's Fear and Terror. In campaign, just splurge and get yourself a Star Dragon when you can for your main combat stacks.
    Can't argue with the choice of regular Archers for custom battles, they are a great, cost effective unit. I think it's worth giving a special mention to the Sisters of Avelorn though. This unit is a far better choice than Archers if you're facing off against armor or foes with high physical resistance, and they're decent when it comes to melee combat as well. The only reason I wouldn't replace the Archers with them entirely is that the Sisters are extremely expensive so you'll usually get better value from the Archers. In campaign, I'd recommend just using Sisters of Avelorn for your main combat stacks as soon as you can.
    Ellyrian Reavers are a cheap and fast hammer for your anvil, and provide a huge amount of power and utility for their cost. That said, like all too many units in the High Elf roster, they are seriously lacking when it comes to AP and a means to negate physical resistance. You'll probably want to eventually drop these units entirely out of your main stacks in campaign, and you also need to be somewhat cautious about using them in Custom Battles, which is why I can't give these my #1 slot. I feel a decent alternative is the Flamespyre Phoenix. It's faster than the Heralds of the Wind, has the flying advantage, can negate physical resistance, has a decent AP attack, causes fear and terror, has a ranged special attack and even has the rebirth special. The biggest problems with this unit are that it's relatively expensive and it doesn't have a proper ranged attack, but it's still worth considering. It might even be worth the extra to get a Frostheart Phoenix instead to bolster your anvil while you're using the Phoenix as a hammer. The Frostheart Phoenix in particular is good even for late campaign use, although it is vulnerable (like any flying unit) to missile fire so you need to protect it a bit.

    Not being a multiplayer person I can't comment on that, but in campaign especially as Alarielle, Sisters of Avelorn would be near the top of my list. In campaign the cost increase is a minor concern, and in every way but range they are superior to regular archers. They do magic and fire damage and AP which allows them to massacre ethereal or armoured units, and monsters can get cut to pieces very quickly.

  • @hyeokcheonkwon4355
    @hyeokcheonkwon4355 Před 4 lety +1

    I don't think this list is for campaign. When you play high elf, you fight against high elf early. Enemies will spam sea guard units and your reaver or even silver helm can't even get close to them. Even flanking cost too much life :( can't really do much in high elf match up. Eagle claw bolt thrower is actually quite good early to mid game considering you can produce it quite early and it destroys archer, sea guard composition which most high elf AI will have until you either destroy all or confederate all. Of course eagle claws are garbage after early mid game :P after that phase, just have one for auto resolve siege attack until you get dragons.
    My personal favorite is sisters of avelorn. The best archer unit in this game!

    Interesting, I expected to see the Elyrian horse archers, not the spear version as well. I am not a fan of the spear version, they always suffer a lot of casualties; the archers actually have decent melee (unlike most other other skirmish cavalry CA makes) while having nearly impossible to catch and doing a fair bit of damage from range.

      They did in his test, but that was because he had the swordmasters at max width but the Chosen were in their default width. So the swordmasters wrapped around the flanks of the Chosen, giving them an edge, and that allowed them to win. SM were the only unit that won against chosen when at max width though, the others lost even though Turin always had them at max width.
      If chosen and swordmasters are BOTH at max width, the battle is neck and neck until the swordmasters drop their martial prowess, then the chosen win. But the results of the fight are so close that even the smallest edge, such as a wider formation, will give it to the swordmasters.

    I think people make a mistake when they compare Swordmasters of Hoeth and Chosen with Great Weapons.
    Swordmasters are an anti-infantry unit, if you send them against large units they are far less effective because their bonus vs infantry does not apply.
    Chosen with Great Weapons are an anti-everything unit. It does not matter if you are talking about infantry, cavalry, monsters or lords, there is not a single unit that can engage a unit of Chosen with Great Weapon directly in close combat without receiving a significant amount damage.
    Comparing a high-end specialist and a high-end generalist and then being surprised that the specialist is better in the field they specialized in just seems strange to me.

What do you think about CA making a total war warhammer 40k game? I think it would be sweet to see legions of space marines going at it with hordes of xenos and chaos and I feel total war is the best avanue of giving that universe some justice. Just my thoughts but what do you think? Would it be cool and would it be plausible?

    • @ethanfox8979

      I can imagine the balancing would be a nightmare. The space marines have to be incredible, but so do the Eldar and the Necrons. The space marines would also be cheaper than Eldar but have comparable stats. There would be far more balancing complaints to CA. The other issue would be that many 40k battles tend to drag on, so to be accurate, it would make Medieval 2 seem quick.

      Don't get me wrong, Phoenix guard are VERY powerful, and easily one of the most survivable units in the game...., but without a large and powerful target to mulch through their main use is holding the line, just like spearmen, which makes it hard to justify their points cost when you can take an additional spearman or archer. Beyond that, Swordmasters also have a faster attack speed (4.3 sec per attack vs 5 sec for PG) and their attack animation is also faster (1.1 vs 1.5 seconds). Overall, swordmasters just put out more damage more quickly in an infantry battle, even discounting their anti infantry bonuses. While the High elves are overall a defensive faction, that just makes blender units like swordmasters even more valuable, as there are few ways to rack up kills as quickly, most of which require careful micromanagement (like dragon princes cycle charging or good use of magic). TL;DR while phoenix guard may boast an overall better statline, the mechanics favour swordmasters as general purpose infantry enders, which is what most High elf players need to supplement their strong defensive and ranged contingents.
