    @hideshisface1886 Před 2 lety +721

    Honestly - this tier list really highlights the issues with difficulty settings in a lot of games these days.
    When higher difficulty = enemies becoming hard hitting sponges... It doesn't really add difficulty, it adds tedium and forces you to use immersion-breaking, gamey tactics.
    When some of the most climatic, fluffy units get low scores because of that, it just shows that game throws immersion out of the window, you no longer play a fantasy empire against another fantasy empire - you play against machine that you have to outdo with cheese.

    • @petrinafilip96
      @petrinafilip96 Před 2 lety +94

      I'd argue that if you want fantasy experience and want to be fluffy, then harder difficulties are not made for you. Usually in most games hardest difficulty (legendary here) is made for absolute math nerds that basically have a min-max fetish. It's not made for players that want to enjoy (re)creating huge lore inspired fantasy battles. And easier difficulties are made for players that want a hand-held ride through the storyline without hitting walls in progression (I am one of these in RTS games).

      @@petrinafilip96 It was done - AI in Age of Empires 2 for example doesn't cheat, it just gets more effective at actually playing the game.
      Some RPG games also modify how enemies behave, which skills are they allowed to use or how often or how enemy groups are composed. It definitely is POSSIBLE - just massively more difficult (the irony) than simply slapping a +X% damage and health modifier on enemy unit, naming it 'hard' difficulty and calling it a day.

    I like the Silverin Guard for their magic resistance of 30%. That can be increased through the red tree to 45% and also paired with ruby/sapphire guardian phoenix or the gem of sunfire to make them highly resistant to Sisters of Averlorn friendly fire damage and fire magic. Extremely useful if you have a chokepoint to anchor an enemy army.

      @Faultyr1x Před 2 lety +16

      And they are not as squishy as the spearmen. With their 55% missile resistance, they're good for taking enemy fire. They are really no damage dealers, but rather stop the enemy before getting into melee with your Sisters of Avelorn. In a Lothern Sea Guard (w or w/o shields) stack, they are not necessarily needed, but still do a good job, so your LSG can archer the shit out of your enemies. I personally would rate them at borderline C to B.

Logic tells me I need melee infantry and cavalry, so at first I struggled to get them in every army. If the high elves combined the really field for infantry with the stables for cavalry, this would be a very different list. And it would be even more radically different if nobles were recruited from that same building chain. It wouldn't be balanced, but it would be much, much better.
    I can't tell you how many times I've Googled which is better, swordmasters or phoenix guard. I wouldn't call them trash, but the just don't stand out as essential at their respective tiers. And yet, I felt like I was obliged the recruit them. And then I started watching your videos, lol. And now I know I can just use stacks of archers for a while.
    Lastly, I love all of the mistwalker units. None of them are trash, and I love it. When I play as Eltharion I basically just have armies comprised almost entirely of mistwalker units. Love them.
    And I love your videos. Thanks!

    • @kodybrown9228
      @kodybrown9228 Před 2 lety +2

      Like he said, any unit is viable at lower difficulties. The recs he give here have to take into account that the buffs the AI get at higher difficulty are mainly melee buffs and the fact that money is super tight, especially with multiple armies. At lower difficulty, just get the units that your lord buffs, and they will have better stats than the AI and probably just roll them over. If you want to buff your lord and not your units, get something with high defense and morale for the line, get 4ish damage dealing units to collapse flanks with, get something fast for rear charges and intercepting their fast things. Pause often if you stuggle with micro. If archers are your damage dealers, consider using single entities like dragons or heroes for front line to minimize friendly fire, but not necessary. At lower unit sizes, monsters and cav get a bit better. At larger unit sizes, infantry blobs get a bit better. Lower difficulty doesn’t stress your income as much either and doesn’t punish for multiple armies in the same way, so just go crazy and get the expensive things if you can afford it.

      What you should take into consideration is that this list was made for very hard battle difficulty, which I assume you don't play as a new player. If you play on normal battle difficulty, many of the melee infantry units perform way better than he says. Regular spearmen don't deal much damage, but are great at protecting archers in the early game. Silverin Guard, Swordmasters of Hoeth and Phoenix Guard also perform quite good on normal difficulty. White Lions of Chrace are still bad though :P (in my experience)

If you’re running nothing but archers as the elves on your normal campaigns you’re sucking a great deal of fun and variety out of the game.

  • @Anand70707
    @Anand70707 Před 2 lety +14

    I'd change the tier list to having a utility tier - so that having one or two of these particular tier units add a lot of utility into armies, like having two eagle claw bolt throwers, for example. Great Eagles, Frostheart Phoenixes, White Lions of Chrace, War Lions, War Lion chariots, Tiranoc Chariots, Spearmen and Ellyrian Reaver Archers would all go into the Utility tier. Having one or two of those guys in an army is quite good, and these guys have some very specific things they're good at, which gives them lots of value. But having more than a couple of these guys doesn't add much further value to the army.
    I'd put the Flamespyre Phoenix a tier above the Frostheart Phoenix just because you can kind of use it to make enemy infantry blob up and do the fire-bomb thing with it - I've gotten hundreds of kills from them that way. They are pretty squishy though.

      I'd push back on this, because he does that as part of his rating. Dragons work as a full doomstack because they deal damage, move quickly, and fly. I'd say the only reason he gave chariots decent ratings were because of what they bring to a team. He said that reaver archers are great additions and gave them a solid rating, but they're just inconvenient to recruit.

    2-4 Silverin Guard are easily buffed and perform well into the late game, easily able to get 60+melee defense and has never let me down.
    They are the one melee infantry unit that's quickly obtainable (even if you conquer someone else's barracks then scrap it after).
    Cheap, reliable and one of the most underrated units in the game and they stay relevent, unlike LSG which expire in 10 turns once Sisters are unlocked.
    I agree Swordmasters are inefficient, but I welcome people to try a couple of Silverin and see them plug the only vulnerability of archer-stacks.

    • @Your_Paramour
      @Your_Paramour Před 2 lety

    • @ElvenPlotArmour
      @ElvenPlotArmour Před 2 lety +1

      @@Your_Paramour Good question mate, LSG get smashed by anything after the mid game and only have 68 models vs 90 model Silverins who have double the armor, 30% magic resist and charge defence vs all. You don't spam this unit, but 2 units of these on each flank will pin large blobs and never move allowing your Sisters even better performance. In reality there's only so many archers that can be in range at any given time. Archer-stacks fall appart once units flood in and Silverin Guard are a simple insurance to ensure nothing ever gets through. Once you have Bowmaster and Precise Fletchlings you'll never run out of ammo and 18 Sisters is just overkill but still presents vulnerabilities to monsters and cav which Silverin stop completely. Check out my Legendary Formations guides on my channel to see how spears can get more out of your archers if you'd like to see more. Cheers mate.
      EDIT: Also, Silverin are much cheaper than LSG meaning you're reallocating these funds to a cheaper unit to hold the line, rather than a archer down the back who's out of range.

The main problem is that high elves, as opposed to wood elves, can't boost them with lord skills or tech. • @monochromaticspider
      @monochromaticspider Před 2 lety +7

      Dryads are decent enough fodder, but really nothing more than that. Treekin are decent blockers, basically much tougher spearmen with siege attacker. But they're tier three, same as sisters, handmaidens, and bolt throwers. And treemen are perfectly decent single entity monsters, but they're a not widely available, they can't be buffed, they're pretty slow, and frankly there's not much reason to use them. What are a handful of treemen going to do that five resistant handmaidens wouldn't do much better?
