    2017's Nier Automata is one of the best games of the early 21st Century. In this in-depth video, I analyze how the game uses its medium to express philosophical themes and ideas in a direct fashion.
    Along the way, I broadly cover related thinkers like Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, & Blaise Pascal. I also discuss how the game deals with topics like war, humanism, and the one thing video games can alter on the fly that no other mediums can: their context.
    ***********
    "NieR: Automata is an action RPG directed by Yoko Taro and developed by Platinum Games and published by Square Enix. It aims to retain the originality of Nier while presenting more appealing gameplay. It is set in the same universe as Nier but features a separate story in which robots are sent to reclaim Earth from an alien invasion after humanity was exiled to the Moon."

    I'm so glad that there's ONE person talking about the camera in Nier automata. A lot of games need to start exploring cameras like this one, not only are they good in a gameplay/combat context but this camera is so comfortable for everything and flows seamlessly.

    • @denchua
      @denchua Před 4 lety +4

      Someone talked about the seamlessness before, I forgot who. He mentioned that the shift in camera doesn't change the flow of the game was because of the consistent control language.

    Nier:Automata is the only game in my life that managed to put a meaning to my life hours spent on playing any game and possibly doing many other things in life. Final question was done at such a right time and context. Never before I felt so... human... to say "yes" with irrefutable certainty. It was one of the two games in decades that made me feel a positive part of humanity. Second one was Death Stranding of course :).
    Also, this game have one the genius context switching mechanic. It's incredible how base robot model could be pure evil with just red eyes (and you hate and kill them) and cute child with a pink bow (and you get all sad if fail to protect it). One small change - completely different perception while consciously acknowledging it at the same time. Game filled with this. Watching other people play this game was fascinating. You could read people better than their therapist. I would never play it with somebody watching me.

      Amen it’s a game that gave me feelings that I can’t verbalize yet. Just like MGS2, which slowly gained meaning and context in my life as I pieced together world events and personal life experiences and comparing them to when I played MGS2/how I was too young to be good at it so I painstakingly entered in the Gameshark code for infinite health which allowed me to progress in a game that I sucked at/ and what year it was (2003). I think I played N:A shortly after getting fired at my second job ever (adult autistic), my whole understanding of the workforce was manipulated by my supervisors, made me feel like everything I knew to be right was wrong. Tried my best to do my best and I was fired. I fought a force stronger and deeper rooted in power than me. It felt like I was left barely alive post firing and I all of a sudden had free time I didn’t know what to do with and wasn’t used to. I sunk all my free time into all the playthroughs of Neir: A. Moved and confused by what I was playing. But I knew, from what I had taken from experiencing MGS2, that something special was happening .

    Great work on the analysis. But I have one thing to point out. The area is flooded not because of climate change but its explained in the story by 9S when you first discover the Flooded City area that the Androids bombed out the bedrock of the area which caused that area to gradually sink below the sea. But outside of that, it gave me an interest in your work. That's a subscribe and a like from me.
