- Meaning roar in Swahili, Kumba is a 143 foot (43.5m) tall B&M (Bolliger & Mabillard) sit-down coaster with seven inversions, including a 114 foot (35m) tall vertical loop, a dive loop, a zero-g roll, a cobra roll and two interlocking corkscrews. The vertical loop wraps around the lift hill and only two other B&M coasters have this feature. Do you know which coasters those are and where they're located?

B&M was so far ahead of their time, This coaster opened in 1993... can you imagine how much better this coaster was than the average coaster in 1993? Crazy.
Nate Kenny damn bro that’s so true lol I guess I’d never thought of that before. And it’s still holding its own in 2019 and fun as shit
Shit it’s the best B&M every made in my opinion. It literally makes people pass out, it pulls 3.8g’s and consistently through that cobra roll and half loop
I try to ride it in 1994 and I was so young they don't let me. I dream to that day until 1997 a finally did. One of my favorite coaster until today
Batman really put them on the map and then they had one hit after another: Kumba, Chang, Raging Bull, Medusa. The 90s definitely belonged to B&M.
It’s also a very smooth coaster as well, by far the best coaster in Busch gardens tampa bay
I just rode this last week (2023) and it is STILL smooth as butter, it is STILL a fantastic coaster. It has truly stood the test of time!
Rode this yesterday for the first time, still amazing
One thing I love about Kumba and Montu is how intricately they are woven into the surrounding environment. So many coasters are just hunks of exposed steel in an otherwise empty lot. IMO the scenery here is almost as important as the ride itself!
Especially Montu
There's a word for this and it's "Theming"!😄
Some very well themed coasters are: Velocicoaster, Hagrid's Motorbike Ride & any coaster at Phantasialand, like Taron & F.L.Y .
One of my favorite things about this ride is the SOUND. It really does sound like it's roaring around the track. So cool!
It's cuz the supports are all hollow!
Did you know the name “Kumba” means “roar”? A truly appropriate name because this thing truly roars!!!
Love that sound!
Always know when kumba drops from that sound 👏🏽
I literally stand on the bridge waiting for it to fly overhead
New paint job looks great.
Smith ikr
I love the colors of this ride so much
Yes, very vibrant, its gorgeous!
Classic loud 90's colors. Reminds me of the explorerers from jurassic park.
Yessss I love it tooooo😄😄❤❤❤❤😍😍😍!!!!!!
Same!! Iron Gwazi looks so pretty too
The cyan and the orange give a nice look to the coaster. When I rode this the first time going up the lift hill that’s all I paid attention too.
Still one of THE best coasters that B&M has ever built!
S Tyler looks fun as hell
This and Montu
This was my first B&M and it still got it!
So damn true😊
Sooo true it’s my favorite
Those interlocking corkscrews are so iconic and people always take photos of them lol
I love the interlocking corkscrews the way they sit on the grass. I love the landscaping around that area. Best landscaping for any coaster IMO.
@@TheHoodGuru Amazing how much a bit of landscaping can improve the experience along with the sense of speed. Parking lot coasters just look cheap and depressing in comparison, really does a disservice to the coasters themselves.
usually done with floorless coasters like scream and Medusa. seeing this layout on a regular steel twister coaster is interesting.
And painful
One of the best B&Ms made.
Its older than many of its riders and still gives a great ride
Yep. Kumba’s an oldie but a goodie.
That helix out of the tunnel into the brakes is a friggin forceful transition.
Can confirm
You can touch the grass on the right side of the Helix. Kinda fun to do. It doesn't hurt. But cause of the friction it does shock you sometimes. It's a pretty powerful shock too
I can't get over just how awesome the layout for this coaster is. So far ahead of it's time
There was absolutely nothing like it that could even compete with this thing back in 1993. 30 years later and it still kicks ass and will forever be a favorite of mine lol
@@mat_ior8598 same, I’m new to roller coasters considering I’m only 15- I’ve rode every ride at the park, but when I first started riding them I always said the one ride i would NEVER ride is kumba. My reasoning for that is because it’s so old
@@AlisonAlisonAlison55 well that’s a really dumb reason to not ride it, no offense lol it’s one of the best coasters out there
@@AlisonAlisonAlison55lol some of the best coasters are on the ones that are older
So true! And rememver this kumba did it first everything else is just a copy
I rode this baby back in 2004... Still to this day the best roller coaster experience I’ve had in my entire life
yea 2004 baby me too
nothing else? u havent been on sheikra? anything?
@@larriceesheikra doesmt hold a candle to kumba
I prefer Dragon Khan to Kumba, even though the layout is the same with an extra vertical loop on Dragon Khan.
this is one of the best layouts for a roller coaster I've ever seen.
The guy’s scream at 1:03 had me dying 🤣
I remember the first time I rode the Cumba back in the mid 90's it was amazing! Haven't been there since 1997 so this video brought back great memories of a much simpler time in my life thank you for sharing!
One of my fav coasters. Can ride it, over, and over agian!
Alex Lopez ok I try I can ride it 2 or 3 times without having to take a break because I’m nauseous but that’s good for an 11 year old
I can do about 4. Then i need a break lol. Alot of crazy shit on that ride lmao
This is one of my favorite roller coasters. The speed, the excitement and the gorgeous views makes it on top 10 for me.
Can we all agree that the sound adds so much to this ride??
You know what makes Kumbas distinct sound?
It's the middle of the track that's hollow. You definitely know when its up and running because you hear it thruout the park. Best coaster in the park IMHO...👍🤘💯
@@kgc65player in the park?? For me it’s my favorite of all time lol. Maybe tied with iron gwazi
The hill into the tunnel part after the last corkscrew is sooooooo underrated too me... I always feel disoriented!! lol
That's the part that i still remember vividly even though haven't ridden this ride in like 6 years.
Ive been riding this coaster for years and the smoothest ride is in the front for sure..👍
If you want to really experience Kuma you have to get in the right back seat and ride.
Then youll be like OMG...💯💯💯
I’m 11 and I FRIKIN LOVE DIS RIDE SO MUCH ITS SO INTENSE and my mom gets sick so I have to go on it with my dad so lol
Ok
Because we needed to know your age?
Me to!! My parents were both hurting from the previous rides so I just went alone 🤣🤣
Why yall being so mean?
Ik its the best
Still my favorite roller coaster of all time. Kumba is what finally turned my brother into a roller coaster junkie as well.
Ride is a classic. The new paint job is beautiful. Been on this countless times since Busch gardens is my home park. So ahead of its time
Riddler's Revenge and Banshee for the other 2 B&M loop over lift hills
Greg Batte yes but this is not about them this is about Kumba
@@wolfie1179 did you read the description?
@@spencerparker9964 shhhhhhh...
I LOVE how the chain lift goes through the loop
Nobody is going to talk about how smooth he hold the camera
Camera is mounted.
Super Ky the camera isn’t mounted, the POV was recorded using a GoPro Hero 7, which has a new feature called hypersmooth. It prevents the footage from looking like its shaky the entire video.
@@daphix usually, these people have gear attached to the seat. You can see that on coasters like maxx force on media preveiw day.
That’s probably because everyone knows he’s using a go pro that’s strapped to his head or chest
@@probeetgamernoob2602 r/whoooosh
I used to hate the color scheme for this ride, and it is actually because it had not gotten it's much needed new paint of coat, after that it looked STUNNING.
It looks ocean themed now!
The paint job makes Kumba look so new again, like it did back in 1993 :) By far, one of B&M's best coasters ever. 27 years later, and it's still looks like it's running better than ever.
This ride is still my favorite. It was very well done. And the scenery? Awesome!
I rode it in ‘93 the week it opened. First B&M I ever rode; it was pretty mindblowing!
Great ride. Just went today in August of 2022. Crazy to think this ride is basically my age. I can’t imagine how epic this ride was in 1993.
I still love it. The rough turns and loops and are entertaining and fun. This is an example of a well done roller coaster. You don’t need a huge drop to be fun (though I love big drops)
At 2:34 you see those rails at the bottom of the track? On days when it’s not busy, they only use one train. They store the second one by stopping there and the track slides right. They use that shed on the right to store the cars. Now you know this neat little secret. The ride also behaves different when running in two train mode. Right near the end of the ride it will stop but with only one train it pretty much continues through slowly.
This is probably my very favorite B&M - with Montu my #2… so many wonderful elements blended seamlessly with the terrain so there are plenty of surprises. Splendid, fast paced coaster which is often imitated but never equaled!
One of the best landscaping jobs around a roller coaster Ive ever seen. Not so much from what you see while on the coaster but the last part, the double corkscrew. On ride looks ok. But when in the queue for the ride, you go by that section where you are looking at the corkscrew in the nice green grass. Looks so awesome.
The most beautiful B&M sitdown in the world in my opinion, love that color an layout, I hope I ever get a change to ride this beauty!
Just went to the Gardens this past Sunday and rode every coaster there and this one was and still is the BEST coaster they have. Right back seat is killer. Front is smooth as silk.
Another winner. Busch garden Tampa rides are amazing
Rode this three times in a row with my brother back in 94. After the third time I thought I was gonna puke. Still have my souvenir cup.
This was such a great coaster with the way it used the land the dips tunnels everything such a picturesque coaster!
This rollercoaster was amazing! I went in the front row my second time, and it was a blast.
Twister Roller Coaster 1 was great!
THE KUMBA BABY ! MY ALL TIME FAVORITE!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I’m generally not one for huge drops so this coaster made me feel very accomplished. :)
This is my favorite ride because it has the perfect mix of short lines and a good ride.
Best coaster at Busch Gardens Tampa!! Very smooth and thrilling.
I live in tampa and I’ve ridden this hundreds of times. A true classic gem
This is one of my favorites! It felt so fun!!!
words cannot express how much I love this ride
This ride looks stellar!
This ride was one of the ones I rode twice when I first came her not to long ago. Loved this one.
Rode this when it was new in the mid 90s,such a smooth yet fast coaster!
That iconic lift going through the huge loop is always insane, crazy this thing was built in 1993.
I haven't been that much of a coster person but this was my first actual roller-coaster and I absolutely loved it
This ride looks so fun!
Absolutely love kumba wished uk had coasters like these
You could always go to Spain, which is not far from the Uk, and ride Dragon Khan. It is basically Kumba with an extra vertical loop. I am from the UK and rode Dragon Khan one week ago.
Ahhhh. I remember going to Busch Gardens when I was 6 ... I was too short to ride Kumba so I rode Scorpion a bajillion times. 😍 Good times. I always said that I would come back someday and ride Kumba.
... But due to physical limitations, I will probably never ride Kumba. Definitely a thrill to watch this video. 😎
Wow, this looks super fun!
the roar of b&m coasters is so satisfying
The roar comes from the hollowed middle of the track..👍
Me and my best friend in high school our senior year at Cypress lake in Fort Myers drove to Tampa in December of 93 and rode the kumba all day.. might be the true benchmark for great riding coasters.
this ride gave me a raging headache when i rode. was super fun but my head got banged around so much lol
Finnian Dots thats 100% your fault:
Press your Head forwards or push it back
@@jojo_hendriks i did have it back, it kept getting banged forward, and having it forward is dangerous
Finnian Dots Having it forward is NOT dangerous. Some rides are so rough and unpleasant, that you have to, but Kumba isn’t like that. Ever ridden a Vekoma SLC? That’s rough
its getting really rough now. it was rough when i rode it back in May this year.
ravenxj220 B&M‘s don’t get rough, a little bumpy at max.
Old Vekomas are rough, bad maintained woodies are rough, but not a B&M at a well kept park
Classic, love this ride
I love the sound of the B&M roar in the morning.
Kumba will always hold a special place in my heart after visiting that side of the park late in the day, immediately after they'd reopened the coaster after a rain/maintenance closure earlier in the day. Had the opportunity to go on it with some friends over and over with absolutely no queue line whatsoever. We probably got four or five front-row rides in in the span of ~30 minutes :D
literally no wait when i went sunday. it was such a good ride especially when go into the tunnel. i’m pretty new to the whole roller coaster enthusiast thing but this ride was super fun
Super fun! Rode this last time I went. Feels like you don’t have a minute to breathe and it’s always spinning.
Beautiful. Coasters are artworks that you can ride.
One of my all time-favorites.
i loved it. People were like “ it’s rough”, same babies complaining about Magnum
Looks to me like it was smooth
Vincent Ferrante that’s the video lol, you do get knocked around on the actual ride but that’s what makes it so fun! It just adds to the fun
It's bumpy and rattly but certainly not rough. But I suppose feeling superior to other enthusiasts is what being an enthusiast is all about.
this is my favorite coaster at busch gardens by FAR
The colors are awesome and it looks like a smooth ride 😊
This was one of the roughest coasters I have ever been on. I had a headache for hours, it rattles your skull.
@Matthew Erwood either that’s a load of crap, or you just love to complain about things.
The kumba & montu were worth walking all that distance between them to get to each other. My feet still hurt from 1996 😂 what incredible memories
Love the fresh paint
I love that helix at the end!
I use to work on the kumba.. it's a great ride
I love this sit-down steel roller coaster.
I love Kumba.
I used to work here and I would ride this coaster very often! I forgot how good it was until watching this! Thanks for the video!
going on it soon do you think i can ride it im 10 and also does it have g force
@@lildannyonthetrack I hope you can bro! It's amazing. I hope you enjoy all the positive and negative gs it has!
@@davidking2050 im tall enough going this weekend very excited
@@davidking2050 i went on it a couple days ago its awesome
First coaster i ever rode. I was 9. It still looks like a great ride even for todays standards. Id definatly still go on it. Its a decent lengthy ride and its got decent hieght and speed and i like when theres a lot of trees and tunnels around roller coasters. Ive rode 300 plus foot coasters like fury 325 and id still love to revisit this. And the montu. That was my 2nd coaster
Kumba was my very first coaster back when it opened, I was too scared the first line wait so I walked onto the cart & right across it, back off, my cousin started laughing. 😂 When they all got off, I said okay I’m ready this time, so we all went back again and I sat this time and I LOVED it!!! So fun!! 🙌
IT'S SO SMOOTH!
She roar!
Well…..according to Busch Gardens Tampa, Kumba is a Swahili word meaning roar.
Just went on kumba yesterday. Got front seat too and it was awesome
I went on it three times yesterday so SMOOTH it was phenomenal
My fav ride at Bush Gardens. That sound ohh!
Words cannot explain how intense this ride is!
Rode that coaster when it first opened up. Still looks smooth.
What a great coaster
This was closed when I went last year, thanks for the digital experience!
Aw dang, you missed out on a killer ride 😔
Excellent ride
This coaster is so good to be made in 1993. B&M is surely ahead of time
my mom was the first female supervisor of that exact kumba in Tampa bay (1994)
I remember going on this a few months ago, my first normal loop coaster. The experience was amazing
ArtyNoodles Kumba is actually considered to be one of the best Multi Inversion coasters in the world
*Inversion
That looks like fun!
Still love riding the Kumba today. It’s a nice ride….not too scary and very smooth.
This ride was so awesome
I went on this bad boy 3 days after it opened, back in '93 - it was incredible! Only managed to go on it three times as the queues were enormous.
i went on it on opening day, 5th public train of ALL TIME (could only ride it once, queues were giant)
Me and my twin rode this 7 times in a row back in 1999..by far the best coaster in the southeast.
This was my favorite coaster when I lived in Tampa.
Definitely the best ride in the park. I love it. Rode 3 times in a row the first time I rode it’s sooo forceful and intense. Kumba > Kraken by a mile.
Looks like a really fun coaster! Not too scary, seems like a good beginner one.
