John Deere X758 Cutting An Overgrown Yard

- If you have been following me, I'm sorry it has been a month since my last upload. I had family in town and the 758 was down (still is lol...). Anyway, I've seen a lot of requests for the 758 just doing work, so here it is!

im glad to see another dude using a 758 for mowing hard yards, i mow commercial with mine on the roughest hills and harshest conditions that the other guys cant mow.
Is there a set hourly or minute rate to charge when you don't know how long the job will take? I'm curious to know because I plan on investing in one myself for my business.
I know this wasn’t a question for me, but you could get a good idea of your hourly running cost if you do a bunch of math. Figure out first the amount of time you would employ the mower, maybe 6 years, divide the cost by 6 and keep breaking it down to how ever many hours that is. That is the value of it per hour (could get more in depth if you go off payment, depreciation, etc…). Then look at the maintenance schedule and get the cost of all the maintenance stuff and do the math to find how much your fluids and parts would cost divided down to an hour. Once you have all that, add each hourly cost up. That at least covers the machine. Then add in what you would want to make… this might at least give you a starting point.

I got a chuckle when you said "I'm going mow this a little higher at 3 inches." I typically mow my farm at 5" and some areas I cut as low as 4. I very rarey cut at 3".
Nice job knocking down that long grass! I know if it was your yard you would have really cleaned up the hay and mowed it again. But nice of you to mow it for them. Can’t wait you hear why your JD was in the shop?
Yes, I would definitely have sweeped up the grass and cut again! I'll be doing a video at some point about the problem.

Thanks! I'll have a video on the issue soon... have some complaints with Deere going on that I'm waiting to see what happens first.

My grandpa letter jones would have fussed at me if i cut an overgroqn lawn and left the grass looking like a freshly cut hayfield.
Blow your grass away from the unmode grass You're killing your mower deck by blowing all those clippings into tall grass it can't evacuate its deck You're just causing more trouble than it's worth. Always always point your shoot away from tall grass like this unless you're windrowing it, and pull that deck guard up so you can discharge further
Question-- those tire look aggressive under what conditions doe they mar the yard? Like after a rain or on a slope of damp grass? just wondering
Actually as long as the yard is well established, you won't really see any damage. you might get a little scuffing in a full lock turn, but nothing permanent. If your lawn is new it isn't even that bad, unless in tighter turns. The thing is they grip well, they don't really slide, even on wet grass. I haven't cut on some really steep slopes though yet, so I can't say 100% how that would go. I'd take these tires any day over "turf" tires.

How do you like the seat cover ? I keep thinking about one for my X750. The storage is appealing to me. Cant decide if I like how they look and kind find many reviews
I gotta say I always hated the look and idea of them, but then when I knew the tractor would be sitting at the dealer outside for a month, I knew I needed to do something to protect from the sun. So I got one, and now I love it! I’d by it 5 more times if I had to! I would definitely recommend if you are on the fence.
Thanks ! I find storage sometimes limited for tools and misc stuff I need when out on the property so the storage looks appealing. Also the ability to wash it if needed. What else do you like so much about it ? Is it more comfortable, actually looks pretty good etc?

3 is “normal operating temperature”, during this it was 5 or so, so I kept having to clean the screens. When I was doing the back, I had it all the way up until it shut off the PTO automatically, and was warning me to shut down. It’s actually really nice because the computer will shut off the PTO, and then the engine in the event it gets too hot, saving from doing any damage.
Does the gas motor cut as well as the diesel ?
I would imagine so, the only time you may notice a difference would be in real tall grass, might bog down just a little.
The big advantages of the diesel is 40% less fuel, more torque and 3600 hours between overhauls vs. 1800 hours for gas.

Lol you cut way faster then I do… it’s my sanctuary … I still can’t believe John Deere hasn’t been able to design a better cooling system … our x748 did that a lot.
well that video was sped up 6X haha, I was cutting it pretty slow to make sure it was cutting as much as possible for how tall it was. It too is my sanctuary! even when I'm only cutting of 1/2" of my yard I take it nice and slow. Nobody bothers me haha!... Yeah the cooling system sucks... The fluid capacity isn't all that much, the hydrostatic cooler is tiny, and the filter vents don't do a whole lot...
I currently use a JD X739 All Wheel Steer / 4x4 with a 60" deck. Before that I used a Cub with an almost identical design. Both have a KW FD series gas engine with the rear facing radiator screen. I find in dry conditions that I need to clean the screens about every hour of mow time.
I ran the Cub for 27 years before upgrading to the JD, in fact I still use the old tractor as a backup. In that time I learned if you rely on the stock overheat warning light you will eventually burnout your engine seals. For starters you will probably not notice the dash light right away because it is covered in dust and daylight, resulting in the engine running hotter than it should. When you do notice you still need to shut down a very hot engine to clean the screen and then try to get it restarted as quick as you can to prevent boiling the engine seals.
The new JD's will now shut off the mid PTO to reduce load, and eventually the engine too, which is a big improvement. I'm assuming this to be true with the diesel models as well. But, the best solution I've found is an audible overheat alarm. You hear it and can take immediate action to cool the system off. I burned out 4 front cover seals on the Cub before I installed a backup alarm on the temp sensor (via relay)...never burned one out after that. Where the new X700's are controlled by a computer I would consider splicing a sensor coupling into the coolant line and using that as a trip for a alarm (backup, marine over temp, etc). This allows you to install a on / off simple temp sensor that can be rated to trip at a slightly lower temp giving you time to clean the screen before the engine really overheats.

I can understand why you'd be upset with Deere over that issue. 15K plus for what is supposed to be their top of the line ultimate garden tractor and it overheats while mowing the yard. Yikes. Given these issues do you at all regret getting rid of the 580 to get this?
Well the heating issue is inherent due to everything having to be small, and diesels are hot. The grass I was cutting had gone to seed and there were other dried light pieces of vegetation. The finer pieces found their way in and got caught in the inner screen. All you have to do is clean this off and you can get right back to work. Issue I have is a fluid leak out the top of the transaxle. I have no regret getting rid of the 580. It’s just that the more complex a machine you get, the more crap can go wrong…
Hey Josh, I've been watching all of these videos because I'm getting ready to buy an X758 with the 54" deck. I've heard that the front fenders can help keep the screens from getting clogged up as fast. Have you tried this? Would love someone's comments on that. Thank you for making all of these videos. Very helpful.
Sorry it took me forever to get back to you! The answer is no, I have not tried them, nor do I intend to. If you are mowing in conditions that you are worried about plugging the intakes, those will not help. If conditions are dry, the deck is going to blow up a ton of dirt and dead grass and all kinds of stuff. If you like the look of them and want to spend the money then cool, go for it, but I myself will never put a set on my tractor.
