Aussie here. I STILL remember when this "record" was released (I was in grade 5 at school, yeah I'm old, get over it lol), and for 2 weeks all you could here walking down our street was EVERY father yelling (inc my own) "turn that bloody racquet down or it goes in the bin", while 15 kids between 20 houses ALL played this over n over n over until we knew the words off by heart. You couldn't drive anywhere in Western Australia without hearing this blaring from cars, as loud as possible, was awesome 🇦🇺😁🇦🇺😁
You think you're getting long in the tooth?? I was a teenager when this was released! Age truly is just a number, isn't it? Crow! I've been known to still go out and break horses. In fact, I spent my 24th birthday at the Queen Concert in Montreal in '81. It was marvelous!!

I was riding up in the mountains in California, several friends, my 4yr old son, we were jamming out to Queen, my boyfriend was really wanting to make a good impression on me, he give my son lots of red licorice and pop, the next thing was he vomited all over my boyfriend we were all dying laughing. My poor little guy ❤️

Freddie Mercury composed this masterpiece from 3 earlier written and unfinished songs. All those beautiful harmonies are the result of a very complicated 3 weeks recording in 6 different studios, only Freddie knew how it had to be sounded. In the first part Freddie is harmonizing with himself and the chorus section is based on the voice of 3 of them, because John couldn't sing so well.
Why is it so famous? It was absolutely uniqe in that era, they played never listened harmonies, they multilayered the vocals, they created an operatic section and who else started a song like this: "Mama, just killed a man"

Freddie actually started writing it in college, one of his friends called it the cowboy song. It highlights Freddie's vocal abilities along with the band's talent. Nothing like this had ever been done before Queen, including the video. Bands started doing videos after they saw what Queen did, and music videos were born. Queen was a genius band and the innovators in music's future.

As you may or may not know, Queen is a British rock group formed in 1970 which consists of:
Freddie Mercury - Lead vocalist and piano
Roger Taylor - Drummer and vocals
John Deacon - Bass guitarist
Brian May - Lead guitarist and vocals
The creation of this video took only about 4 hours and is totally the vision of the four members of Queen themselves. This promo video for “BoRap" (as it’s affectionately called) didn’t just play a huge part in propelling their song to the top of the British (and the world) charts, it almost single-handedly established the concept of using video as a marketing tool for promoting a record both nationally and internationally.
Any music videos produced before Bohemian Rhapsody were used only to promote the artists to the record distributors and would just be a simple recording of the band lip-syncing to their song as they simulated playing their instruments. This concept of music videos that BoRap displayed was something totally new, innovative, and exciting. Suddenly they realized that a video could market the song to the public which open it up to more and more markets (face it, there is a limit to the number of "live" performances any artist can do). The success in marketing BoRap using a video to the public introduced the concept to all the other musical groups who suddenly began making music videos.
What prompted Queen to make a video? Necessity, the single of Bohemian Rhapsody was going to drop in Britain just before Queen was scheduled to head out on tour. The band was not going to be available to promote the song.
It was customary for bands in this age, to appear live on tv shows and lip-sync as they simulated playing their instruments in front of a teenage audience. In Britain, a weekly show called "Top Of The Pops" (TOTP) was "the show" that all rock musicians aspire to be on to promote their songs. A song that was shown on TOTP would be a hit (the show was that influential). Queen decided they would film a video of them singing and performing Bohemian Rhapsody and submit it in their place so it could be shown on shows like TOTP.
It worked. The “Bohemian Rhapsody” video was shown on TOTP for the first time ten days after filming, on November 20, and the song climbed the charts.
Bohemian Rhapsody is totally the brainchild of Freddie Mercury. He not only composed it but is responsible for its arrangement and presentation. Freddie never explained to anyone what he was thinking when he wrote Bohemian Rhapsody. Even the other members of Queen don't really know and, actually, they never asked him what it meant. They just followed his lead since they all had complete faith in Freddie's talent and what he could produce (there is an earlier Queen song titled "The March of The Black Queen" which is an even more complex arrangement, that many see as the forerunner to Bohemian Rhapsody),
Freddie did admit that Bohemian Rhapsody is actually three different songs that he had been writing but could not seem to finish. Then he got a brilliant idea to mash the three songs together, add some transitions and bridges, and create a single song.
BoRap is composed of six different sections:
1. Intro - In the opening shot of the video, where all four members of Queen are shown in an iconic formation, singing. That shot is misleading. What we are hearing, in reality, is only Freddie's voice. He laid down five separate tracks, singing and harmonizing with himself.
2. Ballad - This section comes from a song that Freddie had been working on for years. He had shared with the rest of the band what he had of the song many times as he worked on it and they had unofficially titled it "Freddie's Cowboy Song."
3. Guitar solo - this is the only part of BoRap that Freddie did not write. He knew that he wanted a guitar solo in the song and so conferred with Brian (May) about where he wanted it to fit in. The guitar solo is Brian's composition.
4. Operatic section - Freddie was a big opera fan. He was always fascinated with the idea of mixing rock and opera. This interest lead him to eventually create an album called "Barcelona" with Spanish Opera Soprano, Monserrat Cabelle (it's beautiful).
5. Hard rock - of course, he had to include some rock so he and the band could let loose.
6. Outro - Brings the song full circle and softly concludes the song with a gong!
“Bohemian Rhapsody,” was recorded piecemeal using five different studios. Only Freddie knew what the final product was supposed to sound like. The three Queen vocalist, (Brian May, Freddie Mercury, and Roger Taylor) reportedly sang their vocal parts continually for 10 to 12 hours a day. The entire song took three weeks to record, and some of the operatic sections feature 180 separate overdubs.
Since the studios of the time only offered 24-track analog tape (this was before digital), the three needed to overdub themselves many times and "bounce" these down to successive sub-mixes. In the end, eighth-generation tapes were used. The various sections of tape containing the desired sub-mixes had to be spliced (cut and assembled in the correct sequence). Brian May recalled placing a tape in front of the light and being able to see through it, as the tape had been used so many times. (And yes, that tape still exists in Queen's vault).
In my opinion, Freddie Mercury's BEST EVER performance was at the live aid concert Wembley stadium, singing "Radio GaGa" The performance was an epic live performance, one that EVERYONE should see

Bohemian Rhapsody and Queen as a group have influenced rock music more than a lot of people know. The experimentation with genres was so foreign and a huge risc for them to take. A lot of radio stations pushed back on playing it because it was so different. (A lot like BTS's music tbh though that's very much a matter of language discrimination. 🙄) Also, Bohemian Rhapsody is longer than the average song (especially back then) and they didn't think people would listen to a song that long. Oh boy, were they wrong! 😅
Bohemian Rhapsody is generally considered one of if not thee first commercial music video which is one of the reasons why it's had such a huge impact on the industry and been the visible inspiration for many artists.
The song Bohemian Rhapsody is from the iconic album A Night At The Opera. Freddie Mercury had an affection for opera which influenced his artistry despite the pushback he got for it. For the Olympic Games in 1988 he even partnered with opera singer Montserrat Caballé for the song Barcelona which is well worth a listen. 👍

Queen did this video so they would not have to appear on the weekly show Top of the Pops which was largely responsible for making their songs shoot to the top of the charts. The video allowed them to go out on tour and still be able to perform on Top of the Pops to promote their latest release. This show was basically a playback show anyway where the artist would appear but would not be allowed to perform live but rather was forced to lip-sync to playback. Queen hated that but being on this show was absolutely necessary to launch their records. The music business did not use videos at that time to promote records. We did not have video playback in our homes, only audio tape and records. The music business depended on the radio, touring, and live tv appearances to sell their records. When they created the video, it was state-of-the-art technology. No one had used those effects before so it not only caught the listener's ear with the unique song structure but also provided visual elements that were new to everyone. The success of this video is largely credited for changing the way that the music business promoted records and led to the launch of Music television (MTV). Great reaction, thanks!

Freddie loved opera, and indulged himself by including the "operatic" section of the song.
The opera section (and overall structure of the song) was most definitely NOT a “thing” before this song. I was a teen and I remember being blown away by this song, first of all because it sounds GREAT, but secondly because I kept sitting on the floor listening to the record “A Night At the Opera” LP and shaking my head in wonder thinking “who the hell thinks of combining Rock with OPERA???!!!” This was groundbreaking in every way: The multiple transition and operatic story-segmentation; the harmony arrangements (the beginning was ALL Freddy overdubbing and harmonizing with himself); and the video inspired the whole movement toward music videos and MTV! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 ❤️✌🏻✌🏻❤️

This is considered the first rock opera song. They shot a movie about it. When other bands saw it and how it promoted their masterpiece Bohemian Rhapsody they shot music videos too. So in essence Queen is responsible for both MTV and VH1. They would not exist without this song and Queen! Truth. Check out Live Aid 1985. Freddie had major throat problems and was advised not to sing but he did it anyway as it was for charity and their performance is considered the best of the day. 40% of the world watched them. The more Queen you hear the more you will realize you’ve heard them before. 😊
I feel privileged to have "experienced" Bohemian Rhapsody when it was first released.
Since 1975 I've listened to it literally thousands of times and it's still my favourite record of all time.
The lead singer of Queen, Freddy Mercury was asked in an interview about the voices that he admired - he responded with "the best male vocalist around is Australian John Farnham". Once Freddie past away (RIP Freddie you legend) Queen asked John to be the new lead singer, but John didn't want world recognition and wanted to keep his career at home in Aus. We call John Farnham "The Voice" and Farnsey for short. Farnsey released his most iconic song "you're the voice" which earned him the nickname. John teamed up with Jimmy Barnes, another Aussie legend, and they released my favorite song of them as a duo. The story I've heard is that at first no DJ would play it because it was too long. Songs at the time were about 3 minutes or less, they thought 'no one's going to listen to a 6 minute song'. It was that good old comedy genius Kenny Everett who first played it on his crazy show. Three cheers for Kenny.

Freddie was a legend. It was a very sad day when he passed away in 1991. I remember like it was yesterday. It was a bit of a shock because he'd only just made it public that he had Aids a few days before, and then he was gone.

Freddie always said that he let the viewers decde what the song is about for themselves. What it means to them. This is basically three songs into one.
It was three songs Freddie just couldn't finish individually put together, and the first music video made, they didn't copy others, they're totally unique, if you look at Queen Official CZcams Channel you'll find a documentary on the making of this, as not all is at it appears, for the most part it's Freddie singing with himself not harmonies, the high notes in parts are from Roger Taylor, who also can be found on CZcams and social media, Dr Brian May on his handmade and homemade Red Special Guitar, you'll be surprised what that's made from, John Deacon he made the Amp which gave them the sounds they wanted. It was shot within a few hours before heading out on tour hence the music video, and cost back in the 70's around £4000 to make, it's had over a billion views on CZcams alone and their Queen Greatest Hits Album bought out in 1981 has gone multi Platinum about 26 times over, they've just been told it's sold over 7 million copies and it's a Greatest Hits not original album and they've gone into the record books. There is a great deal of work from the group I think 15 albums as a group, then Fred, Brian and Roger had solo careers running alongside Queen, John also had one but in the background, you've got around 250 songs that were released, loads of unreleased, and they will be putting one out in around September which was recorded around 30 years ago. When listening remember that the whole group wrote the different songs, there was no one writer, they all played different instruments, could all sing, and always included the fans even in music videos, always been a very inclusive group and loved the audience to join in, I would also advise only watch official videos and documentaries, you will hear it straight from the group and people who know them that way, and yes I remember when the group started, as with many different groups and singers from way back who are still going and still not using autotune etc it's just pure hard work and talent

I remember hearing this for the first time on the radio in the 70s... it blew my mind. Queen were a 70s Glam Rock band, Freddy Mercury was a geniius and classically trained. One of the most iconic songs ever recorded. Freddys Rock Opera. Hang on tight your in for a ride!... No it wasnt a thing... it was just Freddy. His manager and record company did niot want to release it but he insisted. It bevcame an anthem for us all growing up. Everyone knew every word... and the guitar??? all the guys played air guitar to it and everyone went off!. Nothing was better than Glam rock.

Each member has written multiple hits and are individually in the song writers hall of fame. This song was written by Brian May (PHD Astro Physics) and beautifully performed for the studio and television audience

He managed to create an almost spiritual connection with his fans! Freddie was already very ill when he performed at Wembley Stadium, but he still captivated the audience like other artists. There will never be anyone like Freddie again!

In the day you weren’t cool unless you could sing Bohemian Rhapsody word for word. Even today you have to sing it when it comes on.
To me it IS an experience. It starts off with a choir then it goes to nice calm music then to opera then hard rock then back to nice calm music. All that in one song!
First, this was decades before autotune so all those beautiful voices were theirs. True of everyone then, but it seems most impressive here.
Second, freddy didn't use anything to keep time, his rhythm was just that good. That just impresses me.

QUEEN is G.O.A.T, I grew up listening to all genre of music, I have to say QUEEN is one of my all-time favorites. Bismillah is shortened from Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim, from Arabic, means in the name of God, the merciful and compassionate.

They were a rock band no other rock bands did opera in their songs. that was freddy. he started writing 3 songs in 68 and in 75 came out with them all combined in this song. i was 14 and i remember what i was doing the first time i heard this. he was from tanzania in africa but queen is from england. listen to the entire live aid queen concert. dont cut it short the last two songs will surprise you. and react to heart stairway to heaven.
