    An orthopedic surgeon is a doctor who does analysis, treatment, and restoration of wounds, disorders, and ailments of the body's musculoskeletal framework. It is a framework that incorporates bones, tendons, muscles, nerves, and ligaments. An orthopedic surgeon corrects inborn or functional irregularities of the bones with surgery, casting, and bracing. In some cases, surgery is important to rectify the issue and avoid additional damage. Orthopedic surgeons work with the patients to locate the best course of treatment to enable them to carry on with a functioning and practical life. They have extensive training in the correct finding and surgical treatment of wounds and diseases of the musculoskeletal framework. In spite of the fact that they know about all parts of this framework, many of them specialize in certain areas, for example, the foot, lower leg, hand, shoulder, elbow, spine, hip or knee

      Hi,
      That's a good question. I actually sat on the admissions board at Georgetown while in med school and learned a quite bit about applying, etc. Lately, most med schools have started to like students with non bio/non chem degrees. But, major in something that you enjoy learning about. If it's not bio or chem, then do the pre-reqs additionally. If you want to major in music, then do that. And then just do the pre-reqs for med school. That will be perfectly fine and may actually make you stand out from the majority who have a biology or chemistry degree. If I had to recommend a degree to a pre medical student, it would be to pick a major that after you graduate (and while applying to medical school) that you can make some income. Examples include: nursing degree, tech jobs associated with a degree, computer degrees, etc. I hope this helps and good luck!

      I know i'm late, but i'm 11 years old and I plan to be an orthopedic surgeon. Question. I'm confused, do orthopedic surgeons get hired at hospitals. Also i don't understand private. Do you start your own surgery business with equipment that you bought. Are academic hospitals normal hospitals with learning ans teaching. What my question basically is how do orthopedic surgeons get hired to hospitals with out teaching. Like basic hospitals. Do private surgeons start those type of hospitals that i'm asking. Are they basically the manager. I'm asking this because when I finish residency and medical, do my training and all that stuff, i want to be hired at a normal hospital.

    • @shenkeey
      @shenkeey Před 5 lety +4

      Keep in mind that their hourly pay is probably worse. It's not about how much you make total. If a plastic surgeon makes 500k in private practice with a 50hrs work week and a neurosurgeon makes 750k with a 100hrs work week - who will be better off? And by the way, 70-100hrs+ a week isnt uncommon for neurosurgeons. Its more the norm than the exception unfortunately.

    • @jasonvoorhees8899

      @@shenkeey and that is the case for all specialties or neurosurgery only ?

    • @shenkeey
      @shenkeey Před 5 lety +1

      @@jasonvoorhees8899 The working hours you mean? In that case -- yes and no. There are certainly plenty of specialisations to choose from, so that you can have the life you want. Per example, in this day and age there are neurosurgeons too that work 40 hours/week as an elective back surgeon. But those are exceptions. You should definitely keep in mind that the road towards surgery is always long and hard, and most surgery specialties are too. But, ophthalmic, urological, plastic surgery and all prive practice surgeries can have very nice lifestyles. Lastly, everyone goes into medicine to become a surgeon (I did too), but chances are that there are specialties out there that you enjoy far more, and also have a great lifestyle (family medicine, dermatology, urology, ophthalmology, ER, psychiatry, private cardiology, radiology) etc.

      I’m going to be brutally honest with you as and Indian American with a lot of family who are Indian born doctors. Your chances of matching ortho are nearly zero. Any surgical specialty is virtually impossible to match for an MBBS. You realistically will match with pediatrics, IM or family medicine. No harm in trying but I’ve had family who have kept reapplying for years never to match.
