Flying Pencil: Inside United's Boeing 757-300 Operations

  • United Airlines has a small fleet of 21 Boeing 757-300s, all inherited from Continental. It is one of just five carriers to use the variant, and it has more than any other - both in total and in active service. Often used on leisure and hub-to-hub routes, let's take a closer look at how the airline uses this stretched 757 variant.

    I’m a UA FA and my first trip was ORD-DEN on a 757-300. Great plane. Weird experience sitting at door 2 and watching the aft part of the plane jiggle on takeoff haha.

    I’ve flown on many United 757-300s. As soon as I saw it for the first time through the windows of ORD’s terminal 1, I immediately fell in love with it. It just has such a striking design that’s so likable. Even on the inside, if you look back (we were towards the front in economy +) it seemed like you couldn’t see the back. The recent retrofit made me love it even more. It is sad that it’s slowly being retired 😔

      It looks like you would bounce like a ping-pong ball back there!
      It looks like it couldn't clear on takeoff, but not as crazy as those stretch DC-8s, wow, those were incredible!!

      First Class Flyer: United airlines is not retiring their 757-300s, they still have them in their fleet. The 757-300s are longer than the A321XLR so the A321XLR won’t be a replacement for the 757-300

    I flew in the mid-late March 2000’s on UA B757-300 between EWR and FLL. We sat in the most rear section, and it was a fully loaded flight. Must have been due to Spring Holiday break. Happy I had that one opportunity to fly this beautiful machine.

    I've been on the pencil and its very bouncy in the back. I am disappointed that they are being replaced by smaller cabin 737s. I wish the 767 was more prominent, since it shares a similar capacity but is significantly more efficient for loading and unloading, can carry more cargo, and is more comfortable on the longer routes its designed to handle. I am sad that Delta is pulling many 767s, which is what I relied on during the pandemic for MCO ATL, along with their 757-200 regular service. One time, I was lucky enough to fly a 764 configured for international travel, including Delta One and PE on this route.

    I caught it ORD-SFO - couldn't believe how long it feels (certainly due to the ratio with it being only 6 seats wide). The bathroom 2/3 back is an odd placement and breaks up the cabin weirdly. Also, we boarded behind 1st class which through me off, but 1st likely enjoyed that added privacy. With the overwing and 2/3 exit doors it offers lots of extra legroom seats (which they charge accordingly for). No amenities on my flight, but I imagine it takes time to serve that long aisle. Overall I felt it was a better capacity solution vs going to wide body.

    I used to fly on lot of B757s in the past. B757 is so much better than B737s/Airbus A-320 series.

    I work in Brighton Colorado and I have a clear and direct line of sight at D.I.A. I see the 757-300 all the time in landing pattern from Chicago and Houston. It’s a goal to fly on one of these rare birds. I see more 757-300 than 777-300

    757 being my favorite aircraft I flew it from KIAD (Washington) to Dublin on a United 757-200 I believe although it may’ve been the 300ER variant

    I have a few times, all with ATA when the planes were brand new. Being one of my favorite aircraft I was lucky each time I few it’ll turn left upon boarding. It’s only flaw is the slightest yaw shimmy or pulsing that can be felt at either end of the plane. Overwing typically can’t feel it.

    I was seated in the rear of a 753 and the cabin narrowed "sharply." Wood chips and graphite dust covered everything. Fortunately though, the flight wasn't "pointless." I felt pretty "sharp" when we landed, although my wife "chewed" me out.

    When Boeing finally replaces the 737, they'll finally produce true 757 replacement, and something to run against the A220

    • @JoeNasr123

      A220 is a completely separate beast than a new midsize airliner

    • @ABCantonese
      @ABCantonese Před 3 lety

      @@JoeNasr123 Exactly. The 737 has grown so much, it's eating into NMA territory, so whatever replaces it should be an A220-300+, with the NMA replacing 757.

    I flew the B757-300 of ATA from Chicago MDW to Boston Logan Airport in 2006. It was a surprise equipment change since the original B757-200 scheduled to operate the flight went technical after boarding in Chicago. This was a second leg, after initially flying from Los Angeles LAX on the ATA B757-200. I found the -300 to be a significant jump up in comfort (at that time). Surely these planes were much newer at the time. Glad to know that the type continues to bless the skies, and hope to have the chance to fly a B757-300 again. Any idea where the ATA planes ended up?

    I think Boeing missed a trick when they closed this line down. It was exreamly popular here in the UK as it is in America.
    I think an engine upgrade should have been considered. Personally I loved the RR Engines.
    I belive more carbon fiber for the fuselage would have been a great way forward.
    Why keep an old design like the 737 going?

    • @Hat65
      @Hat65 Před 3 lety

      Because the 737 is economical and better fuel mileage.

    I've been on every Delta airliner, and I believe I only been on the flying pencil 753 just one time DTW-MCO and I think it was still in the Northwest interior and livery right after the merger. It takes forever to deplane if you are in the back since they don't use the rear doors. Right after the NW merger they started redeploying them on the hub routes like mentioned here. Previously with Northwest they were also flying routes like SEA-HNL, SEA-OGG.
