  • Worldschooling, Unschooling and Homeschooling- Here is WHY we took our kids out of school! We struggled with the daily grind while our kids were in school, I am not gonna lie! We realized school is a one size fits all and that didn't work out for our family. Our kids have different learning styles and to see your kid struggle is absolutley heartbreaking! I know all too well about that since that was pretty much the story of my life as a kid. If you are having a difficult time with your kiddos in school and can relate to our story please leave a message for us we would love to connect with you.
We initially thought of homeschooling until we heard about unschooling and worldschooling -that blew our minds! You truly get to know what your kids are interested in and explore that with them. Traveling is also an amazing way to learn from the world and experience firsthand opposed to learning from books. That is Skylar's favorite thing to say!
Here's the video we talked about- if you haven't seen if you MUST! We were honored to have met Prince Ea at Vidcon last year- he was amazing and chatted with us for a while-so fun!

When in til my daughter out of school I didnt know about unschooling , we both got so stressed trying to find a style to suit us, trying to find curriculums, worrying about her education. We are now radical unschoolers and very happy!

  • @sherriconleystanfordes3407

I love you guys. I love being a teacher and have been one for 18 years and the hardest part is when you can tell a child just is learning in their own way...not a wrong way. But the test scores say we must tell parents ABC. In my utopian world I would have had the opportunity to unschool. I am so glad my daughter and I got to meet you and I love what you and your family stand for.

Love this video! You said everything so well. I pulled my oldest out of school at 2nd grade. He has ADHD and teachers refused to give him more help instead avoided him because he was “too difficult to keep focused”. Besides getting constant grief from teachers he was bullied for being overly friendly by his peers. Everyday I’d pick him up and he would completely melt down. My oldest is now 12 and is so smart. He hyper focuses on the things he loves and loves to learn. My 4yr old is unschooled as well now and we have no intention of going back! I love seeing my kids so much happier!

Oh that breaks my heart to hear that and these stories are sooooo common it’s crazy. Good for you for taking charge of your kids education and protecting them. It is extremely harmful to go through the school system like that- i am so glad you stumbled upon this alternative style of learning my kids love it and so
do we:) thanks so much for sharing your story with us. xoxo

This sounds like the situation I was afraid of for my daughter. She doesn't have an ADHD diagnosis, but I feel like it may be a possibility. I used to take her to the library programs and it seemed like she was constantly being called out. She was so friendly with the other kids and some would avoid her because of that (which broke my heart.) For that and a few other reasons, I decided to homeschool her without a program and make my own curriculum. Not sure if that's considered unschooling, but she has learned so much, especially since I've learned to be flexible. Some days we do worksheets and writing practice and reading. Other days when I feel like her focus is off, we do hands on things like flashcards or educational games. I feel like had she went to public school, she would have been left behind. Thank you for reassuring me this was the right thing for her.

Been struggling with this for 13 years with my youngest daughter, I recognized it and tried to take some of the stress off of her by telling her I only expected her to do her best, not to be a straight A student, but the daily struggle to get her to even go to school was overwhelming. Watching this has me rethinking things, she has had amazing teachers that have noticed the way she thinks, but she was still stuck in a box. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video, clearly there's a lot of parents out there that needed to hear this.

I wish my parents had known this and recognize my gifts and talents. My only child is 31 and I did not know this was a viable option when she was young. Thankfully she did not have any issues with school. I now have a 2 year old goddaughter and would love to be able to allow her to experience the world at her own choice and pace. My wife are just getting into wanting to RVing and travel. Watching your videos makes the passion burn that much greater. Thank you. ❤

Thank you so much for this video. I am a mother of 6 children who ages range from newly turned 21 year old to newly turned 2 years old. As a teacher once myself who has tried and done homeschooling, public schooling, and even online schooling. All of these things still left me and my family stagnant. My kids uninterested sadden and depressed. Since I am an out of the box creature , well so are my children. They are there own individuals and they all have different needs and learning styles. One day I had an Epiphany , “UNSCHOOLING “ my children were all on board for this idea. Which leads me to how I found , liked and subscribed to your channel. This is the first time I have ever left a comment on anyone’s page. So I want to say thank you 🙏🏾 for giving me back the confidence in which I needed. I was battling myself with the decision that I was already doing with my children because I was still mentally trapped in how the world, my family or even friends view schooling. Sometimes all we need is a good support team and my children have always been my biggest cheerleaders. Once again thank you . So sorry for the long winded comment but it’s what I needed.

Really great info. Everyone learns differently. The school systems are a closed box with no creativity. I so see this with the Covid thing going on. I could teach and reinvent these teachers that don't think outside of the box. I'm so fed up. I have twin 8yr old boys that are smart with ADHD. They will not sit still thru a zoom session. It is now up to me. I'm planning a camper van trip. I'm a educated person and also self taught. Teaching to read and math will help to devolop critical thinking techniques. Get out of the controlling gov't process. Only 100 years ago people took care of themselves and prospered. Take charge of your own life.

Great video guys, thank you so much. I don't often comment but this was a must. So much reflecting what we have been through. Our kids were in the system (preschool) until lock downs. A year ago we were "forced" to homeschool and instantly loved it. We saw immediate change in kids behaviour, mood, connection with us and other adults and children. We have let them go back to school this year thinking it's only fair to give them the option. They lasted 3 days detesting every single one. We knew instantly. We won't be back soon. We are homeschoolers with online curriculum as this works for us. We cherish the freedom, flexibility, much less stress about silly things (drop offs, pick ups, lunch boxes, homework, communication with teachers, uniforms, etc etc). Kids excel. It took them one day to work out that 6 hours at the desk, with masks on even during sports and uncomfortable shoes is not a clever trade off for barefoot bech runs and flexibility to learn and follow what they actually interested and ready to learn. Cheerio guys, will be following you for more encouragement!

The freedom that you get from taking your kids out of school is unbelievable! no more stressful mornings trying to get the kids ready for school figuring out what healthy lunches to give them the tears that come from China do homework every night with multiple kids, it’s endless... so happy for you and your family for listening to what works best for you all. My family & I are planning to become full Time Rv life real soon. We are still trying to get our ducks in a row before we take off into this new adventure. I’ve been wondering how to go about home schooling and been stressed about it. My kids are in a similar situation with school right now and I was already considering home schooling before we took off. Already been thinking about taking my youngest who just started headstsrt this year out of school due to his increased health issues just from starting school. (He’s our unicorn) so stumbling upon this video made me cry. Hearing that you guys are doing this lifestyle with your kids and doing school of life made me realize even more that we are on the right path to do this. I couldn’t understand why I felt like this about their schooling, and hearing somebody else put it into perspective made me realize we’re not so alone on this type of thinking. Thank you for making these videos. They are inspiring ❤

Thank you for the honesty, sharing about your childhood, insecurities, uncertainties, parenting struggles....... Myself and hubby excelled at school, he is qualified in theology but currently has an IT company, I am qualified in BSC consumer science but currently a Montessori preschool teacher and music teacher. I have taught at a private school, and although the standard was excellent, many many students were deeply unhappy and not focussing on and developing their strengths, as you described with Skylar and Billy. I definitely do not want my 3 year old in mainstream schooling and have been researching world schooling for some time. She was born prem, has hydrocephalus and hypertonicity, is very imdependant and has many off days when she doesn't feel 100 percent. She also struggles in large social settings, sudden changes or new things. As parents we can already clearly see her strengths , she is excellent at music, art, dance, drama, communication and these aren't big subjects in most schools. I would love to do world schooling with her, or even just for a few weeks or months per year. My biggest concerns are safety, while travelling in unknown destinations and finances.

The other option is to have your kid sitting in a chair all day and in some cases not paying attention to anything being said or being absolutley miserable. School these days is way different from when we were in school, I think social media puts a whole different spin on life that is not fair to all of these kids. • @DaniSmartStart
    @DaniSmartStart Před 8 měsíci

I see this video is a few years old but I have only just stumbled upon you guys. Just wanted to say your video totally resonated. So many resounding YES moments. My eldest was a similar story to your eldest and I hear the same story over and over again. He's a people pleaser, a sensitive soul and a deep deep thinker. He was a 'good' student and a bottler and exploder too. Your second child story is sooo common. So many beautiful unique creative souls who march to the beat of their own drum are labelled as difficult, behind or that there must be something wrong that must be diagnosed because they don't fit in a box or learn in a different way. It breaks my heart to think so many are having their sparkle dulled and made to feel that they are somehow less because they don't tick some ridiculous arbitrary boxes. Who chooses what knowledge is valuable or the mark of success?! Why is memorising our times tables deemed more important than figuring out how to build a bridge, growing vegetables or exploring music? is a child 'behind' if say they can't cook a meal or draw a plan of something they want to build by age 10? Of coarse not! These things are learnt over time as an interest or desire emerges, and skills built upon when they are ready and in a way that supports their learning in a meaningful and relevant way. Why is there a timeline on when a child should be reading at a particular level or they are labelled as behind? Reading is a pretty useful and important skill in life, and one I will support my children to have... but so is being able to cook a meal. I hope to support them to learn both. Maybe they will love reading for pleasure or a means to gain knowledge or maybe it will only ever be used to communicate or carry out a part of a job they love. Maybe they love cooking and being creative in the kitchen or maybe they spend as little time in the kitchen as possible, throwing together a meal to sustain them before getting back to writing their novel. It's the children who are allowed to follow passions, question, consider that there is more than one answer and explore things in creative ways that turn into future inventors, innovators, problem solvers and leaders of change; who add beauty to the world through music and art or just because they light the world up and help to show others a new way of seeing and living.

Love this video 😍! I'm homeschooling but want to shift more to unschooling. And I totally relate to your childhood experience in school. I was labeled with a learning disability in 3rd grade. Didn't realize until I read the book Wild and Free that I was still carrying that label in my spirit as a 33 year old women! Well I felt like in that moment I shed the label and embraced the way I am made and was free☺️. Now I want that freedom for my sons. ❤️

I happened onto unschooling a few years ago, and the other half's family hates my guts for doing it, but it's what I feel is best for my kids. We have to be the safe place for them and putting them in an institution that is increasingly unable to keep them safe, I can't imagine putting them in a brick-and-mortar school. Besides, like Dad said, they shouldn't have to fit into a box. Kudos to y'all for doing what works best for your babies❤

I love that you realized that for your youngest! My sister had a similar experience in kindergarten. Except my parents allowed them to medicate and try to force her(which didn't work) the thing with her was boredom. She went to an amazing Pre-K and was reading chapter books and that's what she wanted to do. She didn't want to sit down and color and do things she already knew. So instead of fostering her love learning they wanted force her to do they want. I knew I'd unschool while my 1st was barely a month old because of sister's and sos experience in school

I went to public school back in the mid 60's. Back then, just like it is today, a public school education is a one-size-fits-all education. I had emotional problems when I was in public school. I was crying and carrying on in class, and yelling at the teachers. There was an average of 40 kids in a class in the public schools back in the 60's. Whereas in the Catholic schools back then, I believe there were about 60 kids in a class. In fact, when I was about to start first grade back in 1963, there was a really tough and wicked nun in the first grade there, and my mother didn't think that she (the nun) wouldn't be so understanding. Therefore, my mother sent me to public school instead. But I still had to this same Catholic school when I was in second, third, and fourth grade for Catechism classes. Only this time, these classes were taught by much nicer nuns. Even though I went to public school, my mother still wanted both me, my brothers, and my sister to have a Catholic education.
After fourth grade, my parents sent me to special education schools because the public school that I went to said that I needed a much smaller class. And believe me, it was for the best. On average, there were 10 kids in a class compared to 40 kids in the public schools. Gradually, I started to calm down, and I started to have more respect for the teachers.
Both the regular public school and the Catholic school teachers simply don't have the time to deal with special needs students. They are under a lot of pressure from school administrators to teach on schedule, to teach what both the schools and the states want them to teach, to tell their students to keep up with their studies, and focus on those infamous test scores.

This is exactly what I want/need to do with my kids. Over the past couple months of having my kids do school at home I have definitely seen the deficiency in my kids education. I have one that just kept being pushed ahead in school without understanding the material. The other 2 have always been way ahead of the other kids in their grade. But they were stuck doing the same thing as all the other kids. I started asking them what they wanted to learn about this week/day and just build everything else off of that. Now they say that they want keep homeschooling next year.

What scares me as well is that the Vegas school system is crap! I live here in Vegas and worried my son will get lost in the shuffle of all the kids! I’m glad I watched this!

You love you kids. Planning on homeschooling my kids. More of an unschooling person myself, but like the idea of using a circulation as my foundation. I need discipline. I'm flexible enough to put something down when it's not going to vibe with my children. Of course, I want to make sure that they have lasting friendship and form relationships with others. That's my hang up right now and making sure our family is not too connected to tech.

@@tryNsomethingnew Can I just mention book real quick? "How to teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons" It's been great for my 4 year old. Very compact and effective method. It covers a lot of ground in short lessons.
It focuses on the letter sounds exclusively. So we taught her those with a letter puzzle before beginning.(short vowel sounds first) but others could do it differently, I'm sure.
The focus on the letter sounds, avoids all of the "extra translating" that comes with thinking of the name first and then having to think of the sound.
When she sees the "sound symbol" it on the page, she's automatically thinking of the sound, already "reading" the symbols. It made for a much smoother transition.
It also handles thing like "th" "sh" "ch" by joining those letters together visually, and then has the child learn the "sound symbol" of the 2 letters combined. So smart! No explaining rules, just reading!
Its been a very, very effective and low stress. I'm doing it in it's entirety, but I adapt it subtly as we move through it to make it more dynamic. I mean, I'm her mom. I know what's up!:) G*d bless you!

Love this idea! How do you/ would you deal with the kids wanting to only be on electronic games at home instead of “learning”?

Oh my goodness! Your kiddos sound exactly like mine. I took mine out of school for the same exact reasons. We homeschool, but I'm ready to take the jump and whole unschool. My 2nd born girl is obsessed with creepy and slimy animals as well.

hey Nicole! thank you so much for your comment:) that is awesome you want to live in a van, what an adventure! i can see what your mom is saying, as a parent you want to make sure your kid can support themselves but it’s also amazing to do something that you love. Maybe you can intertwine the two for now. Or set a goal to do a trip and document it. We see lots of young people doing this and it’s an amazing adventure! Good luck to you! shoot em an email if you like sandi@trynsomethingnew.com
