  • This is called lane filtering. It's very safe and is nothing like lane splitting. Essentially, if vehicle traffic is travelling under 10km/h, you can just pedal on past said traffic.
    It's also a wonderful way of making those drivers envious of your freedom on awesometacular bicycle of yours! Get out there and show drivers how much fun biking is! Cheers :)

      Where it is legal, I think its best to use the sidewalk for things like the video shown, but then go back into the road before the intersection. Its pretty easy to do on a bike, and as a driver, I believe itd be safer based on a lot of accidents and near accidents that I've seen. Just be aware of pedestrians ofc and use discernment.

      I think that law does have merit though. One of the things that is both annoying and dangerous to both cyclists and drivers is leapfrogging: where a cyclist would filter to the front at the light, but the cars will pass the cyclist after the light turns green, but at the next light, the cyclist goes back to the front, and everything repeats.

      And that's all the painted bike lane does - gives cyclists a "legal" position to do what we always have done - pass on the right like that.
      It's okay to ride like this when you're passing a pile of traffic as in this video but cyclists shouldn't pass on the right like that when traffic is lighter. That's when we should wait behind the cars instead of constantly forcing cars to pass us and putting everyone in danger.

    I just came across this video today and I'm in rural Ireland with understandably virtually no infrastructure or support for bicycle's until I get to a larger urban area 20km away.
    The thing about building infrastructure for bicycles if it is done well, is that it is not a threat to car driver's or taking something away from them, instead it's allowing an outlet for others to not have no other option than to use a car. Build it and they will ride on it!
    And nobody needs to reinvent the wheel as far as providing infrastructure is concerned.
    It's already been done highly successfully in many countries all around the world.
    The day after a new bike lane is opened there may not be any more cyclists using it.
    But come back in half a dozen years and that will have changed as people who would have just been potential cyclists feel safer and more confident to use their bikes on the new infrastructure.
    I own and still need a car, I just don't have to use it as often. And I don't own any lycra or Spandex.

The world is built for cars which is completely stupid. The average speed in a city is 13mph because they have to stop every 15 seconds at the next light...

That's how I broke my collarbone when a car turning left at a yellow light hit me. Also, it's easy to get doored when a passenger decides to jump out of the car without looking towards the rear first, which no one has done ever.
    I still pass lines of cars on the right; the schadenfreude is irresistable. But I make sure that I am not going so fast that I ignore cars crossing from the left and that I can't stop should someone open a door.

He is absolutely right, cars don’t check sidewalks before turning. People also don’t have awareness while walking on sidewalks. I was in a bike lane that splits a restaurant outside sitting area and the actual restaurant (ik the perfect place for a bike lane 🤦🏽‍♀️…) I almost hit a waiter because he walked through the bike lane without looking… and he works there knowing about the bike lane. I’ve crashed due to avoiding pedestrians who decide to take up the whole sidewalk and not move for bikers….
    Long story short…. I bike a lot. This dude is right. Adding better bike lanes will help pedestrians, drivers, and bikers… and the earth because better bike lanes means more bikers which means less car emissions.

      Do you think I'm worried about hitting people going walking pace? No.
      The reason that biking on the sidewalk is dangerous is because every single driveway turns into an intersection and a collision point. Not only that, if you get to a main intersection technically you're supposed to dismount from your bike and cross on foot at the crosswalk. Doing that at every single intersection when you're commuting is somewhat unreasonable. Not only that, if you don't dismount at those crosswalks and you continue biking cars don't expect that and can hit you. A lot of vehicle-bike collisions are at intersections and right turns.

      @@BenDurham ok. The story as relayed to me, goes like this: This happened in Plymouth, Mi., halfway between Detroit and Ann Arbor. My co-worker commutes to and from work, on an e-bike. There is no sidewalk in the light industrial park where our workplace is situated. When he left work that afternoon, he rode on the street out of the industrial park. At that point, he jumped on the sidewalk at the major road, outside the industrial park, to stay away from the rush hour traffic. The sidewalk went past an Amazon distribution center. He was hit by a passenger car, as he was crossing the distribution center driveway. The auto driver never looked for, nor expected, a pedestrian, nor cyclist as he was pulling out of the parking lot. I don’t know the details of the citation, but it was clear, as the incident was described to me, that he was at fault since adults on bikes are technically (or legally) restricted from riding on the sidewalks, in our community. It is an otherwise unenforced law, here.

So, I think this incident was simply an unfortunate mistake. Detroit’s eastern suburbs, on the other hand, is filled with sociopaths and thugs who seem to enjoy menacing other drivers and cyclists on THEIR roads. There is always some nut jobs from over there that are road raging on one another and make the evening news. I don’t care to even drive around there, let alone ride my bike.

I like how my city actually has shared use paths for cyclists and pedestrians that are actually designed from the outset with cycling in mind, nice and wide, road crossings are visible and marked by yellow posts, and roads that are too busy or fast for crossings instead get underpasses and bridges over them.

    I've gotten hit by a car turning through an intersection who was clearly not looking out for cyclists, so I ride on the sidewalk now. I'm very cautious around pedestrians, and I cross intersections as if nobody can see me unless we make eye contact. I've been stopped by a cop and I explained all of this to her and she said okay fair enough and drove away. It's stupid that bikes should be considered vehicles, the comparison is so spurious. Idk what the rules are in Ontario but here in BC that's probably illegal - as a cyclist you're supposed to act more or less like a car, except that you're also supposed to stay to the right as much as you reasonably can, but in general you can't pretend there's an invisible lane and pass stopped traffic on the right. Cars are supposed to share the road with you and go single file, only passing when safe.
    There are some pretty big differences between what's legal vs safe vs practical when cycling, and I think people need to decide that for themselves because it's so ambiguous sometimes, but if someone were to slightly turn to the right or open their door here, they probably wouldn't have any responsibility for your injury. Not to mention that the very edge of the road is the debris zone and you have a much higher risk of running over something that would pop your tire there.
    That's not to say I would never do this, but that it probably isn't the best idea - getting that satisfaction from passing stopped traffic in an actual bike lane is safer.

      You're right. A bicycle passing cars on the right without either of:
      1) A dedicated bike lane or
      2) Enough room for two cars to pass each other
      ... is 100% illegal in Ontario under the Highway Traffic Act and this video should not be instructing people to commit violations on the road like that. That behaviour is a great way to get yourself doored or, even worse, right-hooked by a car turning right. The worst part about the latter case would be that the cyclist is found at-fault for the accident too, given that passing on the right is not permitted (except in the cases I noted).

    • @BenDurham
      @BenDurham  Před 2 lety +3

      1. Riding on the sidewalk is both illegal and dangerous because each driveway instantly becomes an intersection which is a conflict point and drivers are not expecting cyclists on the sidewalk because it's illegal in the first place. Along with that they are traveling at much faster speeds than walkers or runners.
      2. The sidewalk is in the video which also just shows you how dangerous it is to bike on the sidewalk because you can't even see the sidewalk in this video.. unless you look very closely on the right side of the road it's behind the line of trees on the right.

    In my country you're legally allowed to drive by cars that have stopped for traffic reasons with your bicycle. They have to have stopped, though. Slowly inching forward and you'd have to wait behind them.
    Motorists meanwhile often close the gap to the right, seemingly just because. That is they're waiting, see you coming (I guess) and with the next movement steer to the very right.
    Others just don't get it, yell and swear when traffic moves again and they pass you. "Why don't you stay behind, ?!?" - "Because §8 section 5 road traffic act explicitly allows me to pass. While §185 criminal code forbids insults."
    Sometimes they also break for no reason, suddenly close the gap between them and a parking car, just to scare you.
    In fact I'm thinking about getting a dash cam for my bike and open a couple of cases. Not for anger issues, but it _really_ gets dangerous sometimes. Just because of some road rage out of envy. I've been a motorist for most of my life, I know the issues and ride with respectfulness of others. We all just want to reach our destination safely. Can't we just meet on the road in peace?

    Mississauga and Etobicoke guy here, sidewalks are lifesavers in these towns. I'll use a bike lane if there is one, but I've had to many people try to scare me with a honk as they pass or hit me as they pull out of a parking lot (fortuanetly at low speeds) to feel comfotable on the main roads. I might be moving slightly slower on the sidewalks due to the paving and pedestrians, but I've got a lower collision record there, and if I ever do hit a pedestiran we've both got a better chance of coming out unscathed.

  • @wilmotown

    As an aside to your aside, cars can do this (when they’re not caught behind 20 more) but usually don’t.
    I get a lot of weird looks when I slow down really gradually for a stop, so it feels like the “smooth driving” trick (literally just always keeping track of the furthest point in your sight line, not just the car in front of you) my dad taught me is not employed by most.
    If I slow down to 15 on my way to an intersection, rather than approaching it at 30 and coming to a rapid stop, there’s a decent chance the light might turn green before I stop moving completely, and rolling from 15 to 30 takes WAY less energy than 0 to 30. For similar fuel saving and traffic interruption reasons, you should also look as far ahead as possible on the highway, that way you can coast down rather than brake hard (which causes red light snakes) when you’re approaching traffic.

  • @originalotrex
    @originalotrex Před 11 měsíci +4

    Just so you know, under Ontario rules it is illegal for a cyclist to pass cars on the right unless there is a dedicated bike lane or that the space available is wide enough for two cars to pass each other. Neither is true in this case, so all of your overtakes here are dangerous and illegal.
    In this case the law requires you that you queue in traffic like any other vehicle since that what you are considered under the Highway Traffic Act in this situation.
    Sidewalk riding, of course, is also illegal under the HTA.

      I believe they tried that many years ago and it never worked out because the admin fees were never justified. Too much bureaucracy for something that doesn't actually work.
      You see, when cars crash into things they can do millions of dollars in damages and kill people.
      When a cyclist runs into someone or something, injuries and/or damages are far less severe. Also, drivers are typically in the wrong when they hit a cyclist and so their insurance justifiably covers the incident.
      Otherwise, that's what insurance through a house or renter insurance is for. We actually end up having insurance for our bikes... But that's optional.

    • @BenDurham
      @BenDurham  Před 2 lety +6

      As for running the red lights, stop signs, yield signs, etc.. I've seen far too many drivers of vehicles do this as well. The difference, yet again, is if a car does it people die and if a cyclist does it, they're taking their life into their own hands.

    There's a big bike trail that crosses some semi-main roads in my town. I have had to stop suddenly before to avoid hitting cyclists who ride across the road without stopping to check for traffic. There is a flashing yellow sign that says stop for bicyclists, but it always flashes, and cyclists are not visible until they are very close to crossing the road. I am pretty sure there are stop signs on the bike path, intended for any cyclists to stop, but none of them can be bothered to stop.

    In the bigger cities it's a lil different because of how busy it can be, so gotta be more alert, though I don't cycle in big cities...
