    This is the kind of stuff that inspired me to bike commute all year long in the U.S Midwest. More people need to watch these videos. I had two cars, an SUV, and two motorcycles. After finding one of your winter biking videos a few years ago, I was determined to bike all year. After two years of driving only 8 times, I sold all but my EV. I now have two e-bikes, a bike trailer, and three "analog" bikes. I also am healthier, happier, and have a lot more money!

    this is my favourite channel. I’m still a student here (no car) and thus I am constantly confronted with a lack of pedestrian infrastructure, which frequently affects my safety. I’m glad somebody is speaking out about the way our city is designed.
    If you follow wharncliffe to lambeth you will find a long stretch of five lane roads with no sidewalk or bike lane.
    This road is one of two main roads through lambeth.
    Wonderland road is great, then it immediately drops off into a death trap. Are we going to have to wait for somebody to get injured or killed for these sidewalks???

    Great to see something focusing on normal people who ride doing normal things. I understand better why these updates to planning are helpful. Putting one of the bike crossings would solve part of the problem highlighted in the previous video with crossing the busy street.

    People really don't understand just how slow their cars actually are in traffic. I live in Miami now (From Canada originally, but took up cycling in the UK), and I volunteered in a timed mode of transport event. There were 2 cyclists (myself on a normal bike and the other guy on an early E-Bike), a public transit rider, and a car driver. We started out at exactly the same place, and even all waited until the bus showed up so we all started at the same time. The route was only 10 miles, from a Starbucks to the Uni. I don't recall my time on the bike, but I do know that we were 15 minutes faster than the public transit (which included an elevated subway type train for over half the distance). The driver? 20 min behind them. So we beat the car by 35 min. No, I wasn't going as hard as I could, but I was putting in an effort, so was a little sweaty. The ebiker though? Perfectly fine, just normal Miami sweat for being outside. That was an early E-bike type as well, so they have gotten cheaper and easier to use as well.
    I also had to show a driver that was stating that bikes take up the road and slow drivers down all the time. He was a friend, and it was an ongoing conversation. He did live on my route home from the school, that I would ride to with my 7 year old son. So, to resolve this, after dropping off the kids, I had him stay behind me, no passing at all for the 1 mile to his house, and time it. Then the next day do the same thing, but pass me if safe to do so. He was able to (but only once), which showed I don't actually block the whole lane, but more importantly, the difference in time? Less than 30 seconds. So, staying behind me for that mile, only cost him 30 seconds. granted the speed limit is 30mph, and at the time (without my son along) I could hold 20. But the speed he could actually go due to the traffic? Less than 15 avg, due to the stops and starts.
    you can show drivers all this info. You can have them ACTUALLY take part in these types of events, and they still wont understand and hate bikes for going "slower" than them.

    The left turn at 1:45 is very problematic. It is exposing the rider and the two kids needlessly to a potential head on collision in a busy intersection. The best way across is to never make a left turn. Ride on the right side and then cross at the cross walk and then cross across the street along the second cross walk (where there is actually a bike lane). In most areas in Canada, cyclists may ride along pedestrians in a street crossing, observing the cross walk signals. Even where it is technically not allowed, putting your foot down and rolling along will not get you a ticket, because it is not dangerous to the pedestrians. Most importantly, many parts of suburban Ontario have hideous amounts of car traffic from parents driving their kids to school. The school should strongly discourage it if bus service is available. In Portland, they actually have a "bike brigade" where children ride together getting picked up along a route that goes by their house.

    Great video about my City. I E-Scooter in this city and it’s kinda risky riding on the road and use the side walk when there’s too much traffic since I don’t feel safe and angry pedestrians don’t wanna move out of the way and say you should be riding on the road. I switch between the road and sidewalks and bicycle gutters if there’s too many pedestrians on a sidewalk I use the bicycle gutters if there is one for me to ride on. But luckily at night when traffic density is much lower it’s easier to ride the roads. I just became a Uber Eats delivery driver with my E-Scooter since I wanted a second job besides my CZcams channel which is a gaming channel and just wanted to diversify my income by doing delivering food and even try and share on CZcams how much I could make by doing Uber Eats and posting vlogs.

    The problem with bikes for most people is they could do 70-90% of their trips on bicycle, but then they need a car usually for the rest. You can do the trips tou could do by bicycle, but you cant really do those car trips with a bike. So for most people a bike is a secondary transportation option ... If they have enough for a car and a bike fine... But who can afford a car and a great bike too?

    • @DanielBrotherston
      @DanielBrotherston Před měsícem +3

      Bikes cost almost nothing compared with a car, basically everyone who can afford a car, can afford both. Yeah, maybe you're not buying the fanciest cargo bike, but that isn't needed either. And that's not even counting the number of people who a bike can replace a second car...

    • @BenDurham
      @BenDurham  Před měsícem +7

      So we actually covered this in the next podcast. Being able to go down to one car per family is a massive cost savings. But even if you were an individual who occasionally needed a car, that's where Taxis/Ubers come in for the remaining 20-30% of your car needs.
      And if you think it's too much to spend maybe $1,000 a year on taxis, that's nothing compared to obtaining, owning, and maintaining a personal vehicle.

    • @krob9145
      @krob9145 Před měsícem +2

      That depends on where you live, cycle infrastructure and good public transport. I need a car 1% of the time. For that I have taxis, public transport and there's even the option of car share/rental/club in my neighbourhood. For everyday stuff the bike works.

    • @viktorkoves611

      What about car share like Zipcar and a great bike? If you're only using a car rarely, you probably are financially better off not owning

    • @travisbassett1084
      @travisbassett1084 Před 29 dny

      Interesting, I'm in Australia it's very car dependent to get around, which really adds to the cost of living. So, both my neighbours have 4 cars... one per person in the family as the kids are still at home and one is share housing. Side issue no one uses their 2 car garage for parking now as they have home gyms in there but then complain about lack of street parking??
      We have 2 cars but I've switched out riding to the daycare and train by bicycle or the grocery store. It's actually faster by bicycle - I timed it. We really could lose the second car which is just to park at the train station 2 km's away and save a lot of money.
      But I wish I had infrastructure like this in the video. It can be stressful riding especially as cars are getting huge (& the govt subsidises people to buy bigger cars but nothing to buy a bicycle??). My kids would also love to ride to school - having networks connected to schools would do so much for congestion.
