  • Everything the Dark Harvest movie got wrong (Dark Harvest movie vs book)
Hello Creeps! Today I wanted to talk about the new Dark Harvest movie that was released this year and compare it to the book by Norman Partridge. This is one of my absolutely favorite halloween/fall/October horror books, so I was excited to see how it looked when turned into a movie. It turned out pretty different from the book so here are my thoughts.

@@AhlywogThe crops will die. They talk in the movie how there was some major black dust storm that killed a bunch of people when Sawtooth got to the church on time.
I think short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is a great supplement to this story and gives more explanations.

The main question I have is how does Sawtooth go from a predator ripping people apart with ease to a bumbling stop-motion character who gets defeated by a jock with a baseball bat?

I haven’t read the book but watched the movie. I was severely disappointed because I’ve heard such good things about the book. I was understanding the rules, but my poor husband (who isn’t a horror fan) was completely lost. What I don’t get is why only the kids were allowed to participate? There was no build up of the plot, they just kinda shove a bunch of information down your throat like “Enjoy!”

As someone who didn't read the book, the movie made it clear to me that the car meant freedom to leave the town. But what it didn't do is make it clear why no one else could leave, they even put huge city lights in view at night time when the MC's drove out of town indicating anyone could make it to the next city over in a days walk(maybe 2)

Thank you for making this video! I read the book and my GF didn’t. She called what was gonna happen in the first couple minutes just as you said your husband did. I’m usually ok with changes and alterations from a book to a movie as long as they correctly capture the spirit of a story and this movie just seems to miss it completely. I enjoyed the movie well enough but it’s definitely a bummer to see such massive differences.

Half liked the film, but so many questions.
    1. Why don't they just leave the town?
    2. Why did it turn into a free for all murder night? I mean after a few years the amount of male kids would dwindle right down.
    3. Why don't they just wait by the church for him?
    4. Why drive away at the end? probably could have escaped on foot away from the road. Zero attempt made
    5. Why not just sacrifice one child instead of so many? back to point 3!
And the twist was so obvious from the start. The girl pyro story was not used or needed for anything. Just one cop, easy to break away from town.
what a mess, fun bits though, creature was cool

Or just circle the post you know he’s starting from.
I also hate that they starve the kids for three days because it’s so dumb. Being malnourished isn’t great when you have to perform physically straining tasks in a dangerous situation. There’s a reason ancient cultures fed their hunters/warriors more.

What really cheeses me off is that all of your questions either have answers in the book, or were changed for the movie. Many of the answers are EXPLICITLY stated, but the writers just couldn't be bothered to put them in.
      1. The town may not have many cops, but it doesn't need them because the entire town is run by the Harvester's Guild. If you piss off the Harvester's Guild, you're done. No job, social outcast, the works. The Guild doesn't want people leaving town. If you do, they hunt you down. In the book, Kelly's (the girl) parents were "line hoppers" that left town. Officer Ricks hunted them down, killed them, and kidnapped Kelly to bring her back to the town.
      2. In the book, it doesn't. There are some shenanigans, these are teenagers after all, but for the most part everyone is focused on killing the October Boy. And most of the time, the October Boy doesn't care about killing anyone. He's usually just trying to survive the night.
      3. In the book (how many times am I gonna type that I wonder?), some people do. The hunt has been going on for generations and there are many different strategies. Waiting by the church is a popular one because the church is the one place the October Boy MUST go. This strategy is, however, known to not work very well since so many people are actively hunting the October Boy and so they have the numbers advantage.
      4. Because the film writers decided they wanted to change the ending and make everybody about as smart as a lobotomized goldfish. They thought about their version of the ending for about 2 femtoseconds. Zero attempt made? That statement refers to the writers. The book has a COMPLETELY different ending.
      5. This one isn't actually anyone's fault but the kid's (victim blaming is cool, isn't it?). Only one person needs to die every year. Mostly the kids get themselves killed by being stupid.
Sorry for writing a small novel here. This movie was just really sloppy and it pissed me off.

@@lard_aardvarkha! thanks for that. See, the problem was I found it frustrating too as it's an otherwise enjoyable film. This makes a lot more sense now, typical isn't it. Always the same, just do what's in the book, it's all there for you, just make it like that! lol
Same goes for I am Legend, at least 3 versions of that film now and it's such a simple story lol

I LOVE the book. I’ll still watch the movie, but I’m bummed to hear some of this. I imagine they needed a narrator at the beginning of the movie reciting what the book does. The people I’ve seen that didn’t like the book didn’t like that writing, but I enjoyed it so much.
I’m super confused how a car is the prize..that makes no sense in the story and you know, I won’t say, but how?!?!
The main characters are also so important, the boy and the girl. 😫
If you haven’t read The Lottery by Shirley Jackson you should check it out. It’s a short story. I think I benefited having read this, I can see so many things that have to had take inspiration from her story and I believe Dark Harvest has enough similarities to connect the two.
I’m still going to watch the movie but really appreciate your critique. I’d rather go in skeptical with lower expectations cause I was really excited for it. Thanks!
And yes the town must be small, that’s part of the whole point!

So weird how differently we consume these things. I absolutely adore the novella, have reread it 3 times and planning more. I was nervous about the movie for obvious reasons but actually really loved the results. Saying that as a fan of the book.
The car is the symbol of leaving the town, maybe they didn't explain that enough for some people: but every kid gets the car, drives out of town and is presumably traveling the country now when it turns out later they never left. It is also why Annie begs Richie to take her, she can't leave on her own. I think the cop explaining things to the kids is for the audience to lay out the rules (which do get explained in the book as well) and then we do see the kids exchange all the rumors they heard among each others: to me a very adequate transition to how you do that in movie form. I loved seeing the early 60s vibes: for me the setting was always about the pretense of the perfect utopian American life and the story of "Dark Harvest" is about the hidden price to keep the fake idyll going -> the older generation exploiting the younger, pushing people of color, women and other non-desirables aside to the margins, small town conservatism that asks you to shut up, get in line and go to church. The visuals in the movie really underlined that for me. I agree, I missed some of the smell, feel and look of the Sawtooth Jack but to me it still felt seasonal enough. I was prepared for these descriptions not quite making it into the film. I don't think the kids freak out here because they want a car: to me it was a great visualization of male entitlement and subsequent rage. Which fits so well into this story.
Sorry, I am starting to get rambly. But I really was happy about the result, I felt they did one of my favorite books of all time justice.

The part of people seeing the cross but not seeing the cross is like hearing something but not actually listening to it. They visually observed cross with their eyes but they don’t actually hold it sacred or resonate with the symbol of holy importance.
Overall I like the trope of midwestern American Christian town that engages in pagan style sacrifice to appease unknown secret gods and reap good harvest and stave off disaster like Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery

Your definitely a bit biased. Which is totally understandable because you read the book first. However, i just watched the movie and yeah I'd give it a 70%. I have to diagree about the town not feeling small. I did get the small town vibe from it, the vibe that everybody knew each other. Also, i did feel that this town was disconnected from the rest of the world. The long stretch of road leading out from the town made it feel that if you keeps driving down it, you would loop back to the town becuase nobody is allowed to leave. Thats the exact feeling i got. I agree the town not being decorated for Halloween, aside from a few lit pumpkins was bummer. The rest I cant really comment on becuase i never read the book. Also i wish sawtooth was done with practical effects. Outside if that good flick, would have liked more lore about how it all started.

Yeah the book is so much better. The changes the movie makes are frustrating because it makes the characters look dumb or the situations too unbelievable. One huge gripe I had was the creature design. I think something resembling the books cover would of been so much better than the weird looking Star Wars clone making aliens they used instead.

  • @thek838

Sounds like a decent book, maybe will read it. But the one major thing I have about this, is there any actual explained reason why they can't just steal a car and drive out the town?
Because if not that's a plot hole to big for me to look over. Also it don't really make much sense that they think it's a myth if it's done every year and just a thing the town knows about, at that point it's not a questionable thing if anything it would just be normal and they would find it odd that other places aren't like that.
Just a few nit picks even if the book sounds good by description, I am not really drawn into how of it makes sense. And the film just looks awful from the trailer lol.

    • @GabrielTheMagolorMain
      @GabrielTheMagolorMain Před 7 měsíci

It is explained…the town is cut off (there’s more explanation than that, I don’t want to spoil it). There’s no internet, it’s the 60s. No one leaves no one comes in (maybe families move in and don’t leave, I can’t remember for sure). They’ve grown up believing this and don’t really have a reason to believe differently. The myths also keep them distracted from reality. I think not thinking of this story as happening in the real world helps a lot. It’s a town with its own world building, what’s outside the town really doesn’t matter, only in the fact that some people want to get out, some accept they never will.
It’s a fantastic book really, and it’s short, but it’s better to read and let the story take you rather than over analyzing. It was more enjoyable to me that I didn’t try to figure it out, once the story starts to reveal more info it made it all worth it. And it’s reminded me of an episode of Creepshow or Tales from the Crypt, but more complex.
