- Well it would appear that the recipe is the following: no black flies, no mosquitoes, 4lb test and an appropriate drag setting as there’s no time to fool around changing it during the action. And then add a brown that’s looking for a potential photo op! Perfect fit.
What an end to the day!
The fish did take out a goodly amount of line as all of a sudden I could see it splashing around far to my left. I called it a ‘him/he’ but the jaw would indicate a female and a heavy one.
What timing that I walk up to the last hole, wasn’t even going to fish it, see a big brown at the same time swim up from my left to stop exactly where I had stopped. It stopped where the stream comes around from a 90 degree angle. It was waiting, facing upstream to ambush any food coming from that direction. What a predator.
It’s been an incredible run of very large browns and the CPL, a Xmas gift has certainly helped with the quality of the videos. And in my Xmas stocking was another very helpful gift that I’ve used this season. It’s a ball cap with WTF on it and underneath, the words, ‘where’s the fish’. I actually thought the anagram meant ‘wild turkey federation’ but apparently not. So thanks for my lucky hat, a gift from daughter, the fish have been awesome. Quite a talisman!
In episode 3 I did say I would work on not groaning as much. Apparently I lied as there’s a lot on noise emanating from me. I think the size of the fish was a consideration as were the walking conditions. My feet were mired in muck as I tried to concentrate of controlling the fish. I succeeded in controlling it but failed miserably in my personal sound category. So next time I’ll be quieter or possibly not!
This was a powerful angry fish and several times I envisioned the hook coming out as the struggle continued. Luck allowed that not to happen.
Alfred and I have been incredibly fortunate to net these wonderful specimens, let alone even see them! Fishermen and women sometimes fish a lifetime and never encounter once what we’ve been privileged to see multiple times already this year alone. We are thankful for that opportunity.
Thanks for watching. Hope to see you again.

Wow, that trout is definitely over 8lb's. Well done Rob, great content and greetings from Ireland.
Hi Garry
Alfred and I are quite amazed at the size of the fish in this little stream. They certainly are magnificent specimens and a treat to catch, release and catch again! Walking the back woods is wonderful and the scenery idyllic. Oh ya, and there’s fishing to be done.
Alfred does a great job editing although he’d like to walk a bit more than he’s been doing.
Thanks for commenting. I’m sure the Emerald Island holds similar treasures!.
Cheers
Rob
That's insane,much love from NC
Evening to you. Ya, that was a pretty awesome experience to 1st of all even see that fish but then to think how to catch it and actually doing just that!! I’m smiling as I write this. And, it’s back in the water.
Interesting timing as Alfred just put out a 6 minute video a few hours ago showing the hole where I caught her. Unrecognizable would be a word to describe the difference after that deluge. Will be interesting to get back there and I know Alfred wants another shot at fishing there too.
Thanks for watching and your comment.
Cheers
Rob
1st 😊 Wow just Wow what a beauty I’ve never seen a wild brown this big being caught in a small river Congratulations 👍🏼😁 16 inch girth 😳 man if I catch a 16 inch long fish in my local rivers it’s a very good day 😉 can I ask what you caught this on i heard you mention Chub Tails in one of your previous videos but I don’t know what they are I’d love to know Take it easy & Tight lines ✌🏼💙🎣🏴👍🏼
ps I’d need a nap after catching a brown of this size in fact if I hooked a wild brown this big I’d probably soil my shorts my PB was a fish just over 20 inches but it didn’t have the girth of this Behemoth 😅
Just back from a long day. Alfred will have to do another video but he doesn’t mind.
This truly was a BIG female. I want to talk to my fisheries friend about it. The last video had a 28” brown also but it’s small in comparison.
This one was caught on a 3” piece of worm.
Chub, shiners are small bait fish that frequent all streams. They are a food source for bigger fish. If I catch one, I repurpose it by using its tail, discarding the rest for raccoons, mink and other land creatures that roam these woods.
I attach the tail to my hook and then use that as a means to catch the browns. They appear to love that combo in any of the streams I fish.
Glad you liked the video, pretty awesome fish.
Cheers
Ps….look 5 videos back to see a long form swim off to the left. It’s hard to get a perfect view but 3 huge browns, 2 at 28” and the backwards brown at 30” all share that same hole. The video is 1:56 seconds. All 3 biggies have been caught and released this season. And they’re there to catch again! Amazing
Cheers
Another good video, Rob
Hi Paul
Thanks, glad you liked it. Alfred did a great job putting it together. My part seems easy! This fish really caught me off guard with its size, very heavy and 16” girth. I thought again that the longer the fight went on, the less chance I had of catching it. But it worked out. Have a great long weekend.
Cheers Rob
💞Wow🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍💙
Yup, have to agree. That certainly was a surprise. I expected and saw a good sized fish but didn’t realize how big it actually was until it was out of the water. Great fun and fortunate to be allowed to catch a fish this size and then release it. Glad you liked the video.👍👍👍😎🎣
