- The Walther P5 was developed in the mid-1970s as a response to the West German police’s search for new a 9x19mm service pistol to replace the older smaller calibre pistols then in service, like the Walther PP. The P5 saw police, military and commercial success.

The Armourer's Bench 3:27 did you miss an extra zero on the weights, or did I mishear?
Great looking pistol, and never knew it was issued to the British army!
@Matt Hayward Ha yes it sounds like I did. 750g/0.75kg or 1.6lbs for the compact - this is why I have the accompanying article, the weights in there are right! Good catch Matt. :)
Also, that P5 target pistol: gorgeous!
Have had my P5 for about 10 years now. It is my go to carry gun. Very accurate with good weight.
The P5 was not only used by the Dutch police, but also by other law enforcement agencies and customs. Als for the mag release. At some time they were replaced by a different modernised release, because it was difficult to operate with gloves and u tended to accidentally release the magazine when the weapon came in contact with the backrest of the seat in the patrol cars. During its servicelife the P5 was also modified to use another type of ammunition with a hollow brass bullet. The use of this bullet caused more wear and tear . When production ceased at the Walther plant, it became to expensive to maintain the weapons well with custom made parts. The P5 was phased out from approx 2013 onwards and replaced with the P99Q NL. The latter also differs slightly from normal production models to accomadate the custom made ammunition (Ruagg Action NL).
Thanks a lot for making these vids. It's a very nice looking pistol in my opinion, and I don't get why they've never been popular amongst civilians, at least here in Europe, when our gun laws were more permissive back then. I'll begin to look for one, my 7,65 walther PP needs a brother !
Good looking gun Id love to own a P5 and p38 someday. Current edc is a gen 3 P99 with a truglo laser love Walther guns
Really interesting video, stay safe and keep it coming!
I love my P5, the most accurate pistol I've shot
They're one of my favourites too. Thanks for watching! - Matt
And in 1983 it was used in TWO Bond films, by two different James Bonds.
Octopussy and Never Say Never Again 😊
Good video as always, I hope y’all are doing well and don’t catch the coronavirus, would hate to see this channel go.
Don't worry, hunkered down, riding this out. Lots more videos to come. Thanks for watching! - Matt
הנשק הכי יפה והכי אמין מעולה
I'm actually pretty sure the heel magazine release is not a matter of it being outdated, but being the European tradition, cause in the European school of shooting, they have the custom of retaining the magazine and storing it back in the magazine pouch, instead of discarding the mag like in the US school.
Unless, they started adopting the US tradition now which I'm not aware of. I personally prefer the mag release to be in the US thumb style, or in the HK paddle style like in the USP, it's the most efficient style imo cause you don't have to adjust your grip
This channel is extremely underrated
Thanks for the kind words, really appreciate it!
thank god for twitter!! nice vid buddy ty
Thank you & thanks for watching! - Matt
I lucked on an apparently unfired P5 today at my LGS. Sadly, no box, papers, or spare mag.
Only ever saw this thing in pictures before, had no idea was exactly this thing was.
That's what we're here for! Thank for watching - Matt
Would love to see a comparison of the P5 vs the P5 compact...
Great idea, will try and do that in the future.
Amazing pistol. Why is it out of circulation?
Expensive to make. Therefore expensive to buy.
Tab please I have a serious issue with the walter I picked from a departed uncle, if I load and cork once I pull the trigger the hammer will not hit the firing pin there by preventing it from firing, what can I do ...also can I have an email or WhatsApp to reach you directly..i am counting on you to help out here 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
If your British how did you get your hands on this?
Lucky enough to have access to various private and military research collections. Thanks for watching!
I used to out shoot my mates w my old P5. Recently I sold it for more than I paid for it many years ago. It was a nice simple and highly accurate gun. I moved to the UK on a permanent based and figured I needed to sell it. I should have just given it to my brother ??? Another one that got away!
What country are you in??
We're based in the UK but travel to collections worldwide when we can.
