  • From ancient times, Christians have celebrated the Assumption of Mary on August 15. In modern times, the celebration of the Coronation of Mary has been joined to that feast. Father Hugh Barbour reviews the history and theology of these Marian celebrations, and explains why they should fill you with joy.

So I'm not the "sola scriptura" type because I think the Bible is clear about the faith being based on both the Word and tradition, but all I think I heard here was mythologizing of Mary...
I'm not a Catholic but I have been looking for a steel-manned argument for the idea of "the queen of heaven" or for what I see as an inappropriate elevation of the position of Mary.
The whole framework seems odd to me. If Mary is the queen and Jesus is the king, we have a strange monarchal relationship between the mother queen and the king son that is really reminiscent of the Semiramis story...
If anybody has apologetics on this topic that are more robust, reference the scripture for their conceptual backing, I would be interested.

Something that helped in my conversion from Protestantism was realizing that "prayer" does not equal "worship." When Catholics talk about "praying" to Mary or the saints, it merely means talking to them, asking them for things, etc. With God, we also talk to him AND we offer him our singular worship. Catholics do not worship Mary and the saints, although we do honor them, just like we can honor good or heroic living people on earth.
How do we know that we can/should talk to people in heaven (that is, Mary and the saints)? I know that some Protestants say that the Bible forbids talking to the dead, because it's like necromancy/a séance. While it's clear that God forbids the use of magic or trying to use supernatural means (besides Himself), Luke 9:30 shows Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah, who by this time are dead. This shows that there is at least some kind of communion/connection that we can have with the righteous who are in heaven. "We though many are one body" and all that. All the righteous, living and dead, are united through Christ.
Look, I know it's not a landslide of convicting verses like you were looking for. The fact is, some things like this rely on Sacred Tradition to help interpret the passages we have. It comes down to the fundamental dispute between Protestants and Catholics, which is whether the Magesterium/Tradition have any authority, or whether Scripture ALONE has the authority.
The short version of that is that Sola Scripture isn't biblical and isn't historical. We needed the authority of Tradition and the Church to tell us what the biblical canon was in the first place.

Why does Mary cry if she is happy? Why do we see miracles of tears on certain apparitions?

    • @lonelyberg1808

Because she is sad. If a child makes huge mistakes, he will make his mother cry right ? The mother sees the Heavenly Father and the divine son getting angry, they are ready to chastise us, what can the mother do seeing all the horrible things children are doing (knowing she can't always hold back her son's anger) ? The only thing the mother can do is cry and warn the children before the heavenly Father and the Divine Son punish the children

@@lonelyberg1808 I have to agree with everything you have said. Many years ago as a young man I visited one of the oldest churches in Essex Co. New Jersey. I would usually go there after lunch to say a prayer to our Lord and also in front of a beautiful statue of Our Lady. One day while praying in front of our Lady's statue, I notice what I thought were tears coming from her left eye.
I suspected it must have been a reflection of light coming from the window, but the windows were stained glass and the tears were like water. As I walked closer it looked more like real tears than a reflection. As I was about to go behind the roped off area where I was prohibited, a door opened from the back of the church and a priest walked in. The church was otherwise empty. I backed off for touching the statue to verify if it was water or a light reflection due to fear of disrespecting the roped off area. I've never seen the light reflect off of the face of that statute before or since that day. It seemed like a miracle. The thing I don't know is if Our Lady was crying for the world, or for me personally. I still wonder today, but I know the message was real.

It's not really directly stated in the Bible (which I know a lot of non-catholics don't like but that's another topic) but it comes from Jesus being the successor of the Davidic line, and in the Davidic kingdom the queen of the kingdom was the mother of the king. So if Jesus is king of heaven, then Mary by those rules would be queen of heaven.

This is not part of the Gospel! As in Jesus never preached or taught us to worship/venerate/call Mary the queen of heaven/Mother of God etc... Jesus describes the Trinity (i and the Father are one/i must go first so as to send you the comforter (Holy Spirit)). He never describes Mary as a partner of the Father or anything close to what this priest is saying. If anything Jesus rebukes Mary and his family when he begins his ministry. The people come to him and say your mother Mary and your brothers are outside and they want to talk to you. Jesus then looks at the crowd of believers in the house and says these are my mother and brothers, anyone who follows the word of God. (Mary and his brothers had come to get Jesus and get him back under control. They thought Jesus had lost his mind. They were among others who thought Jesus was possessed by demons).
Because Jesus never taught this or even alluded to it, i can not in good faith adopt this stance. May God forgive me if i am wrong. I believe in the fullness of the Holy Trinity, and that Jesus is sufficient for my salvation.

"To rule over others you are supposed to be good". The bible says "there is none good, no not one". Romans says "there is none righteous, no not one". I don't know that those make exception to Mary. Quite the contrary. Scripture says ALL have sinned". Again, ALL is not excluding Mary. Then on the assumption of Mary. Why is it that scripture is abundantly clear on the ascension of Elijah, Enoch and Jesus himself. Why is there nothing on the much venerated and worshipped Mary? Where did this singular privilege come from? From the church. Certainly not the bible. Why the church insists on defying God's word is unbelievable, if not blasphemous. God will not have mercy on those that spread lies of the devil and preach another gospel. According to the apostle Paul they are to be anathema. Not like the anathemas pronounced by Trent that are not biblical. Those Trent anathemas are used to instill fear and control over Catholics. When your doctrines are false the only way to get people to believe is by coercion. That is contrary to what the supposed first pope teaches. In his epistle peter calls himself a "fellow elder" when he is saying not to lord it over those you have been entrusted to. Doesn't sound like the church is following "the Pope's" teachings. Instead it is doing just the opposite on top of doing it for "filthy lucre". As everyone knows the church is the richest organization in the world. It's own bank, tons of money, real estate and gold. Gold? Again, peter said "silver and gold have i none". Yet the church is loaded. I guess is one word describes catholicism it has to be hypocrisy.

@@rbnmnt3341 no it’s an admission we have to the divine revelation of the Holy Spirit and to what scripture alludes to.
God in his mighty power is capable of ensuring the woman he wanted to be the mother of his only begotten son to be sinless … then we believe he is capable of that.
Revelations 11 at the end through chapter 12 clearly reveal that Mary is the new Ark of the covenant. The Ark that would hold the Living Word of God, the Bread of Life. The scripture goes on to talk of how the serpent spews water at Mary on earth but the earth swallows up the water protecting Mary.
Where does the Ark of the covenant sit in Moses temple? In the Holy of Holies, where God comes down to hover over the mercy seat to communicate with the priests of his church. Jesus and his mother in thrones the leaders of his church with the priests Jesus put in charge on earth running it.
Jesus is the new Adam … a man of flesh who through complete obedience to God lived a sinless life and through his sacrifice restored the relationship with God. A relationship that Adam had broken through a single act of his own disobedience.
Jesus and Mary with their obedience restoring the holiness of all men allowing us a path back to Eden.
God in heaven who spurned the serpent that deceived Eve saying that her seed would bruise the serpents head with his heel. Mary whose actual son defeated satan with his final act.
Mary in complete obedience to God allowed herself to bear God’s son. Succeeding in her obedience in every way that Eve had failed with her own disobedience.
The line of King David whose son Solomon and descendants after ruled the kingdom with their mother on a throne beside them. Jesus the king of kings with his mother on a throne beside him fulfilling the OT prophecy. Jesus the son of God … ruling a kingdom that has no end, the promise of God that David’s line would rule forever … he wasn’t lying Jesus is never going away
We see this parallel between the NT and OT. We know this because God is all powerful and only he could devise such a plan to be revealed so well that we see the NT hidden in the OT and the OT revealed in the NT. We see it and we know that God can do anything, even protect the mother of his son from all sin. That God can promise an flawed King David that his line would rule for all eternity.

@@Davidjune1970 I will only address one of your points. Because the rest is nothing but catholic talking points. You say God wanted the mother of his son to be sinless? What gid wanted the mother of his son is exactly as scripture says. Prophecy of the messiah says that he would be born of a virgin and from the line of David. Anything else is a lie of your church. Including that Mary was sinless. Scripture say "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God". More important Mary recognizes her sinful human nature in the gospel of Luke. So the question is why would marry need a savior if she was sinless? Scripture does not support catholic teachings or doctrines.

    • @Davidjune1970
      @Davidjune1970 Před rokem

@@rbnmnt3341 Mary knew there was no path to God she could attain but through Christ.
It’s clear you find God to be limited with his powers that he couldn’t do this for the mother of his son.
And you yourself already abide by what the church has done. The entire bible is the property of the church. It wrote the bible and chose which scripture would be canon.
Do you believe Paul is inspired scripture? He didn’t walk with Jesus. All of his writings were based on what the church taught him or what the Holy Spirit revealed to him.
If you do consider Paul’s writing legitimate canon then you have already bought into the fact the magisterium is able to pick and choose what is canon and what is inspired.
Jesus’ divinity and the trinity are also teachings of the church. That God the father, the son and the Holy Spirit are all God … three distinct beings but all of the same essence.
Do you believe Jesus is God? There are protestants who don’t believe he is God.
So it’s interesting how you would pick and choose which teachings of the magisterium you believe and which you don’t.

I don't understand this, Mary the Mother of Jesus, is dead. Please think about it.. this is what GOD says about these things.. why even consider what the Catholic church is saying when it is the opposite of what the word of God says? Please people think of you eternal destination, follow Jesus Christ, not Catholicism..
When we die we “sleep” until the Lord Jesus Christ comes back and calls us up from death. When we are dead we know nothing (Ecclesiastes 9:5-6: For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun) and hear not His voice until He calls us. (John 5:28/29: Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation).
It is forbidden to interact with the dead, it IS necromancy because inquires of the dead fall under the same category as necromancy (Deuteronomy 18:11 Or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead,) AND is an abomination to God. (Isaiah 8:19 And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?) WHY do Catholics feel they should ask a dead person who knows of nothing that is under the sun (Ecclesiastes 9:5-6: For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun) for they have not yet been raised up by the Lord Jesus Christ, anything? (John 5:28/29: Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation).
I wish you would think for yourself and pray to the Father in heaven and ask the Holy Spirit of God for revelation and truth. Let GOD guide you, not your catholic priest… you HAVE a priest, he is Jesus Christ and HIS spirit is in you if you truly believe! I truly love you and I hope this helps you! Peace and love!
