What is BetterDiscord and is it SAFE?

- BetterDiscord is a client modification for Discord. A lot of people have heard of it but very few truly understand the minimal amount of risk using it. In this video I'm going to address Discord's ToS changes and whether or not BetterDiscord is still against the ToS. Furthermore, I'm going to debunk the rumor that BetterDiscord will 100% get you banned.

I'm 99% sure that Discord does not care about the official plugins & themes, only for legal reasons they will state they dont allow it just in case.

I agree. If Discord really care about it... they would sue BetterDiscord and start banning innocent people who use betterdiscord only for the themes and harmless plugins. They just don't allow it just in case to prevent massive exploits or something similar that is harmful

Client mod developer here. Discord does actually know when people are using some of the more common mods such as better discord as they have code in their client which checks if your computer contains traces of files and folders belonging to the popular client mods. So technically speaking they could decide to one day ban everyone that has been flagged by this code but they seem to be deciding not to. Don't know what their intention for this is other than statistics maybe?
If this is the case, the statistics they get could help them determine what features Discord users actually want. Pretty interesting stuff and I'll keep my eyes peeled to see if Discord adds any BD feature to normal Discord.

If only discord's "Block user" functionality works as well as Betterdiscord's "Block users" plugin.

Basically, if you block someone..you don't see them in the user list, you don't see when they send messages, you don't get notified. They basically don't exist anywhere for you. It works how a normal and basic block feature should work.

@@smolalli Ok but not only the server has client mods on it, it also has announcements of betterdiscord and literally the creators of betterdiscord, and almost everyone on the betterdiscord server use the betterdiscord client for obvious reasons, i doubt they would go as far to ban everyone there, but deleting the server is also a option they don't do.
I think its nice of them to not just ban you right away for using it. I would even argue that maybe discord staff themselves would use better discord as a way to get ideas for knew features and/or just to have themes or something like that. So mainly any privacy and API issues is what they are concern about for sure.
TL;DW: Yes. The program itself is safe. It's up to you to make sure it stays that way by install reputable plugins, staying FAR away from super convoluted mods that grant accesses to unnecessary things, and not expecting Discord support to help you if something breaks (or you lose your account, since it's not allowed in their ToS, they don't have to help).
Been on Discord basically almost since launch, and used BD for a while too, no issues, or bans. Just be careful out there lol.
Would using a translator plugin be safe?
@@reptbh It should be safe, but I definitely recommend checking the source code, or seeing if other people have already installed it and verified it's fine. If you're still doubtful, you can always make an alt account and log in with that and test it out, then move to your main if need be.

Discord has some groundwork set up to support custom theming, but it's not confirmed to be actively worked on. If I were to guess, Discord is likely going to support custom themes on Desktop after a while which would cover a large portion of BetterDiscord users.
They have released custom theming, But it's a nitro exclusive and I don't think you can make custom ones.

Better discord having themes and these plugins to improve the experience seem like defaults that discord should have already. I mean how do you not have a current call timer? I know most of their time probably goes into making sure connections and calls all run smoothly but geez the amount of time it takes just to roll out something simple like their planned profile colors thing is astounding.

I've been using better discord for the better part of its existence, including the message logger plugin, and I have never ever gotten even a warning for it...
ideally would be ofcourse if all the plugins I am using there get implemented into discord itself, just like the implementation of quote replies, I see BD as more of a "make your life better" type thing

Strange that this came to my feed, and turns out Regular Discord added themes as a Nitro feature today lol
I once had to manually report someone made a screenshot of the chat, afterwards i noticed that I had a theme enabled in my client and apologized for using better discord.
The supporter told me that they actually don't care if you are using better discord as long you do not use it to abuse the service in a way.
And they won't give support on better discord or any other mod because they (or not everyone) don't know how the mods work, meaning they can't give support for modified clients.
So theming and some simplistic mods that doesn't allow for stuff you couldn't do without the client itself are fine.
So for example you can make a plugin that seeks copy paste links for images or something similar, but you aren't allowed to use embeds as a user.
Tho my knowledge is a bit old.

ive been using it for quite awhile and i like it for its useful plugins but it would often make it crash so i eventually stopped
wait so, let me get this straight, let say if a bot is logging all server messages even deleted ones and all of the logging messages (you know kind of similar to audit log thats in the server settings) was on a channel that only admins and mods can access to which only admins who have access to the chat, if that is the case does that go against tos for discord? by the way its dyno bot that is logging messages in one of the private chats

I've been using BDC since 3 Years with themes and a ton of Plugins like status changer, logger, showhidden channels and stuff and have never been banned nor warned

I did some digging the other day on whether or not people that use BD would get banned and I stumbled across a comment made by Discord on Twitter answering someone's question regarding the use of BD back in 2019 or so and they did state that someone using it is at risk at getting banned but I beg to differ and that they don't really care all that much if someone uses it. What intrigues me the most is that they know that this exists for a long time but they never really had any actions against the team behind BD (as far as I know at least). So in a way, although it is against the TOS, Discord doesn't really care all that much and there aren't any signs of them telling the developer team to stop.
I hope discord will add in a section to their TOS for Client Modifications.
So, everything that is "client side" is allowed as such, and things that adds Nirto features will get banned and other stuff like that.

@@skilledscript2725 not everything in BD is client-sided, for example show hidden channels, when you open a server your client doesn't hide the channels, the server just doesnt send them to you, there are workarounds for it which have been used by show hidden channels
@@Edaurd That is incorrect. Every client gets a list of all channels. The client is the discord website wrapped with Electron which basically turns a website into a desktop application, hence why you can use Discord in a browser and it looks basically the same. Also a reason why you can see HTML/JS code when you use BDs console (press F12 I believe). Discord then goes a ahead and sets something like "hidden: true" on every channel you are not supposed to see. The plugin goes ahead and changes it back to "hidden: false". That is it. Discord won't bother to change the way they hide channels since you cannot manipulate any code with the normal client.

because by joining the server you agree that dyno will log your messages but when somebody else does it theres no consent

I actually used to use BD and posted ss of my BD client and no one batted an eye, so themes are safe from my experience. although I havent used it in a long time because back then I didn't care about how much ram it used but now i play games that need a large chunk of my ram. *TL;DR* BD is good, maybe not too good for people that dont have alot of ram though

I only use plugin's in BD site, there's actually one allowing you to view server permissions, or member permissions, are those actually ban able? Because I never got banned

Generally I don’t think so per sae, since it’s not doing anything harmful and makes your life a bit easier. Discord’s soubds can be a lot. The only “issue” would be using copyrighted/trademarked things but.. So long as you don’t share it openly with everyone that you’re doing it, it should be fine

man, im trying to download BD, i go to settings, no plugins, i download again, no plugins, i repair it, no plugins, uninstall and install, still no plugins, just regular discord, and i just want to fix it, i want a cool theme for my discord and i cant do it because there aint no plugins or bd configs, i dont know if i do need to download a plugin from better discord page but yea thats pretty much it, if anyone here or even you, no text to speech, knows anything about it, i need some little help please.

I mean, most of people uses Better Discord for themes, and other people just uses it for that plugin where you can use emotes in everywhere without nitro. I personally think that discord might ban people with those plugins because they're actually loosing money in that way, I mean not a lot of money, they get like 300k or more idk, but as less people are paying for discord nitro, there's still posibility of discord banning them.

Can you make a video on Ripcord? i use it because it is light weight. But also have more features that discord doesn't have. Like: i can see all the roles and roles perms even it ain't my server.

The Showhiddenchannels plugins was recently deleted from the website, idk what's the reason but pretty sure it was something illegal to use.
The only thing I want for my discord is to like make look smooth with some themes and plugins, but it's mostly the "remove blocked users" plugin that I really liked than the plugins I have used, also cool themes, it's just hard to find one cuz many aren't in my taste 🗿

The ShowHiddenChannels plugin wasn't deleted because it was illegal (if it was it would've never been hosted on the official plugins website anyway), it was deleted due to the fact of BD updating their ToS.
@@Edaurd I mean, those channels are already cached somewhere in your discord app, just that you can't see it, pretty sure all they did is extract that cache and show it to you.
@@FairwellNoob it is actually deleted/removed, you can no longer find it in the website nor the "Plugin Repo" plugin, but I'm pretty sure the reason on why is because of the ToS, and yes it was hosted on the official plugin website and in the Plugin repo plugin, I had this before and just decided to remove it cuz, been finding weird channels (nsfw) and the moderation channels that were kinda annoying for me.

Yea I already use nitro because I often have to dump large files into discord and their default size limit is puny for wav files. I don't want to have to upload it to somewhere else like soundcloud and send it so I just use nitro. I also have my own emotes I use often which help me express emotion better than the default ones can. So if they were to add nitro exclusive better discord stuff I'd be happy.

@@Azaelris i just can't fathom why their initial file size limit is so pathetically small to begin with honestly. They could have just easily gone 50mb free, 100-150 paid (which technically is now 200mb), but yeah. Files just aren't as small as they used to be, and having to even think about compressing then having your partner decompress the file is just a couple of unnecessary extra steps.
is show hidden channels plugin bannable? It was for a long time on their website but recently they removed it, because it was against tos. And some people on reddit are saying it is not.
The reason the plugin got removed is because the betterdiscord plugins tos changed not because of something related to discord, so pretty sure in terms of ban from discord you're on the same level as before.
But what if you used better Discord then removed it from your pc cause you dont wanna get banned. will you still get banned if you do?
Betterdiscord has been constantly ruining itself lately with these shitty updates. I love that now they're re-writting their plugin support code from scratch to purposefully break old plugins that they dont want people using and inconvenience those devs even further. Used to be my favorite client but now it's terrible with all these removals of previously find plugins, locking out devs from updating said plugins, and how constantly it breaks now.
