  • Giro D'Italia 2022 is now on fire with Jay Hindley and Richard Carapaz fighting for the pink jersey in the Tour of Italy. But in the past, other Giro D'Italia were amazing, like the FASTEST of them, 2018 Giro D'Italia with characters like Chris Froome and his epic Landis in Finestre. Know his story.

@peter west Yes I have as a matter of fact. No one with ASTHMA could be a Professional Cyclist who wins GRAND TOURS.
Several UCI Mens Cyclists have been suspended for using Solbutimol and they had much lower levels than Froome did.
Wiggins was also using Solbutimol when he won the 2012 TDF.
Over half of Team SKY uses INHALERS.
Tim Wellens abandoned the 2017 TDF because he refused to use an inhaler after having a bronchial issue. He cited that the use of inhalers is being ABUSED amongst Pro Cyclists.
When Tim was on a team when he was younger 5 of his 7 teammates where using inhalers.
He said anyone using an INHALER in Pro Cycling is CHEATING.
Other Pro Cyclists who have used SOLBUTIMOL where SUSPENDED from 9 months to 1 1/2 years and they had levels of SOLBUTIMOL in their systems that were much lower than Froomes had.
In the 2018 Giro d'italia Froome after having been cleared from the Vuelta a Espnana knew that he could abuse SOLBUTIMOL in the 2018 GIRO and he did.

Few facts, most of which you've ignored:
Half of that 3 minutes gain was in downhill, because Dumoulin waited for Reichenbach (team colleague of Pinot) and even then they've been descending slower as Reichenbach is a really bad descender.
Pinot was not pulling (maybe 1 or 2 times), same Carapaz and Lopez (competing for white jersey). So it was basically Froome vs. Dumoulin/Reichenbach. And Reichenbach was tired and is a bad time trialist. He's been effectively slowing down Dumoulin during his turns on the flat.
On Finestre, Froome did 397W during his solo, Dumoulin 395W. But Froome was a bit lighter, which resulted in 40 seconds gap.
On the last climb, Froome and Dumoulin had the same time (If I remember, only 1 sec different), meaning Dumoulin produced higher power. By the way, Froome was 3 minutes slower then Nibali several years ago. Different circumstances of course, but it shows how tired he was.
He entered Giro with overweight, targeting peaking in the last week and keeping his form until TdF. Also had 2 tumbles, which always takes some energy off, as body needs to use it for recovery. So, end of Giro was the monent he should be at his best, while some others were already fading.
His team prepared for this scenario, so his feeding was perfect.
And last but not least, he was lucky for good conditions. No headwind. Hot weather (wasn't the case in the first part of Giro). And according to Froome's lab tests, he performs better in warm conditions.
If you take all of this into an account final outcome doesn't seem suspect to me. Far from what Landis did in almost every single aspect.
I am not naive to think that Sky was clean. Especially in their early years the gap between them and other teams was quite significant (not anymore in 2018). But even in those early years I've never seen anything close to performance of likes Pogacar or Roglic who are winning from spring to autumn without even look tired after winning stage. Last few years are the darkest times I've seen in 25 years watching cycling.

My reading of the situation is similar:
I followed the giro that year on a bike. Here are some comments based on my observations, in chronological order:
      - CR was the reigning Tour and Vuelta champ and the favourite at the start. Their stated plan was to start the season late, and still go for the Tour, so his stated goal was to finish the Giro fast.
      - I am sure the crash in Israel didn't help... it is not like there isn't a credible explanation for what happened
      - many were commenting on how Yates was buring matches over the first two weeks. Sky knew that it's a 3 week race, and you can win it (or lose it) on the last few stages (like Carapaz yesterday and Hindley in the TT since the Froome win)
      - the race was fast every day - probably because different teams were trying different things at different times.
      - the Zoncolan stage, for example had some bumps before the Zoncolan and I remember seeing Team Sky absolutely drilling it on one of the descents/valley floors before the Zoncolan. They were clearly implementing a plan of wearing the riders out before the final hill.
      - I managed to get to talk to Ellingworth on the bottom of the Zoncolan. They were quietly confident that their plan was coming together (which was subsequently evidenced by the goal of having froome lose weight over the 2nd week of the race)
      - Froome beat Yates on the Zoncolan - and a ore objective reading of the footage may be that Yates was starting to pay for his fast start
      - Ineos were the strongest team in the race. You spoke of Pucio and Elisonde. Don't forget folk like Poels and Henao had kept the pace high on stages after the TT - I think it was all part of the plan.
      - Ineos's helpers were brimming with confidence when I spoke to them on the side of the road - they were executing a plan
      - the run on famous day was planned, and you even acknowledged that Doumolin made mistakes... You also need to remember that this was Froome's plan, and they had not anticipated it.
It was amazing to see the plan come together... and he was not killing himself before the Tour... riding himself into form...
I don't find it necessary to conclude that this is/was a doping situation. For me, I clicked on this video to relive it as it is one of my fondest Giro memories!

This wasnt like Landis. The distance was similar, but that is about it.
Landis put the whole Phonak team on the front early, burnt them all out then broke free from a very large group which chased him for the rest of the stage, including quite a long flat bit. I watched the whole stage. It was amazing, but not credible. Landis had also completely blown the stage before losing a ton of time on the last climb. Seems he probably took a transfusion to allow him to recover and that transfusion was itself contaminated. It was the most amazing riding i have ever seen, especially given he was on the floor the day before - bit too amazing.
Froome had been riding ok in this Giro. He had won the Tour and the Vuelta the year before. We were into week three where Froome tends to get stronger. We saw that in numerous Tours de France (if other riders had attacked Froome more in the first week/ten days i think he would have won several fewer Tours). Yes, he was behind, but on this stage he broke clear on the Finestre, but he actually made a lot of his time gap on the descents. Something that is often forgotten is that Froome turned himself into a demon descender. This piece mentions that, but it is actually pretty astonishing that he gained so much time on descents. Yes, he held off the chasers for 80 odd km, including some flat but the chase group itself was pretty small, there were only a handful of riders chasing - Landis held off a really big group. Yates blew completely on this stage, so i don't see what the relevance is there.
Whether Froome doped or not i do not know, but to say he "did a Landis" is really wholly untrue in terms of the facts - the two are just not comparable.

I'm not claiming Froome is clean or doped, but wasn't the crux of his victory on this staged attested to their aggressive and calculated nutritioning plan? You even mentioned the bottles in the video, they'll have contained different mixtures of electrolytes and carbohydrates depending on his needs during the effort. I'm not aware of the nutrition plans on the chasing teams here, but Team Sky/now Ineos have been on the forefront of professionalism in this regard. Team JumboVisma is now matching if not surpassing this aspect and the results speak volumes.. Though something can be said for the sudden rise of Slovenian riders of course!

For those not paying attention to the video the end mentioning the oval chanrings is very important. Oval chainrings are notorious for chain skip and dropped chains but if you keep a high cadence gear ( big back sprocket) there is no issues with this as the biggest back sprockets have less cordial action which is what leads to dropped or popped chains off the rings. These oval rings allow you to climb faster as you can now use a higher cadence without the saddle hopping pain. Of Froome's main opposition that day, Yates generally suffers in the third week of tours anyway, and despite Dumoulin's Giro win he was hardly frailty free either - whether mind or legs, and his tactics that day were catastrophic - the guy relied - I'll say that again - RELIED on Pinot - the most mercurial l thing to ever happen to bicycles. Carapaz wasn't yet the finished product and how long has it been since Movistar knew how to ride a mountain stage as a team - getting on for a decade or two!
Btw, Elissonde had shown good climbing form for a year or so prior to signing on for Sky - silly to suggest his performance was at odds with that part of his career.
Who knows about Sky really, but there's plenty about the circumstances and the riders involved in this stage to say at the very least it was a combination of factors rather than just one majorly doped (or not) performance.

Asthma aside:) When I look at the race, the tactics Froome employed seems to fit especially when considering where Yates was in his performance. But also, Tom Dumalans mistake was also telling. I think that Froomes win was due to an epic well calculated and well executed move. The fueling strategy. If accepted. But, I Think, the rest can be put down to the fact that no one believed he could make the time back enough to challenge the standings. so, they let him make the move and then underestimated it's potential. So yes, an outstanding performance by Froome, but equally a race lost by Simon and Tom. They let him go and gave it away really?
But then, it's cycling and so, who knows? But for me, I can see how it could be a great race well won..

That day (and Froome's performance) will forever be a big question mark of its validity. It was a super human performance. Froome had never even attempted a move such as that from that far out. CF was probably pumped full of salbutamol before the stage even began (do they measure levels just before a race?) and his team had a great plan of attack. That along with the aggressive nutrition and Froome being aggressive riding downhill and his pursuers hesitating at times. That would never happen in today's cycling. They've gotten faster and everyone's got nutrition dialed in. Is it believable? Sure. It was a perfect storm for CF to escape. If the top GC guys would have worked together better they could have either caught him or limited their losses. Most I remember about that day is how horrible Yates cracked.

  • @GregBecker
    @GregBecker Před rokem +1
