- This is a quick video showing my first design with Print-in-Place modeling. You get to see my screw-ups and the design changes made to overcome the issues. These knives won't cut anything, but they are good trainer tools (or fidgets if you prefer). It's just amazing to me that I can just load up the printer with fully functional toys once the prints are removed. These butterfly knives are sure to impress anyone the moment you show them. None-the-less, it is another awesome set of prints!
Please leave a comment about what you liked about it or didn’t like. It will certainly help me to improve on future videos! If you have a suggestion for a future video(s) please also let me know in the comments, I have quite a few designs in mind but am always looking for new things to do.

Printed this and I love it, been fidgeting with it all day today, calms my anxiety :3 Thank you
That's great! Enjoy it, and best thing is while fidgeting and remaining calm you're always secretly ready for the zombie apocalypse 🤘.
@@sanfordprime xD Yupp!
@@sanfordprime Hey! I've been using my balisongs all day every day. But I broke mine and had to print another one. But it's very very stiff and requires a ton of work to get it smooth again. Is there any way I can print the model and it not be so stiff? I've been opening and closing it for about 4 hours and it's still not as loose as my first one was. Really frustrating cause I wanted to give some to my friends but it's too much work to do it more than once
same filament, same printer? That's odd, but somewhat believable. I've sometimes had weird things happen like that. Maybe try printing it again? In the 4 hours spent trying to loosen a new one could be printed... I printed one from tough PLA that feels stiff to this day same thing, I just cant get it loosened, the print came out awesome though besides that and it is functional, just stiff when flinging...
This came out so well! Its so fun to fiddle around with! Awesome job!
Happy to hear it, thank you for the positive feedback!
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful video with us. Your presentation was so genuine and engaging, it made the video even more enjoyable. I've subscribed to your channel to make sure I don't miss any more of your great content.
Thank you so much! 😊 And Thank you for your support as well, I'll try to not disappoint.
Love this, this print definitely earns a sub!
You're awesome! Thank you.
I've printed like 5 of these in the last week, very nice print thanks!
Tied at 5 with me then! Lol. They're friggin fun aren't they? I've been playing around with the idea of putting 30 or so of them on a single printjob, whaddya think?
@@sanfordprime yo that would be sick! having 30 butterfly knifes in one print would be a dream!
@@coolguyfast10I know, right!? Christmas presents fore everyone, check.
This was my very first butterfly knife, and it’s awesome! As soon as I took it off of the build plate it folded out and was ready to use! Amazing print!
That's Awesome! Thank You, and congrats on your first butterfly knife!🤘
I was wondering what the measurements are. Thank you very much for your dedication to these prints!
Oooo, caught me away from my computer for a bit. I'd say they're about 4 to 4.5 inches closed? Sry, responding from memory... I believe someone posted in either the printables comments or thingiverse the dimensions after they printed.
I’m printing one right now it’s a coincidence that I came across this vid when it was about half way done and I subbed
That's awesome! Let me know how it goes. Thank you for your support!
great video, dude, and subscribed!
Thank you! More to come.
I'm gonna print a shitload of these ! thank you !
That's awesome! No prob, Thank You.
i have bought a 3d printer and once it comes this will be the first thing i print lovely video
That's great! You'll get more use out of it than what you initially think.
Thank you!
which did you get?
@@sanfordprime i printed the Training Version and it was perfect
just broke :( gonna have to glue it
@@redjuluThat's awesome! Have fun with it!👍
Very cool! Subscribed and I'm adding this print to my list! Question: can it successfully be printed on it's side or does it have to be printing upright like that?
It's designed to work without supports when printed upright. I've heard people have been unsuccessful printing it lying down. Best of luck and Thank You!
Yes i have had no issues with other prints i even made a lattice cube testing the printer ... the print itself is perfect no stringing etc. i am trying another one now and have also reduced the print speed from 100% to 60% i am printing at wall thickness of 0.8 as this is standard for Cura thankyou for your help anyway i dont give up so i will keep trying and let you know if i succeed haha my next mission is to learn how to use mesh mixer another free program that allows to fit large prints onto small printers my printer is 300 300 400high
Yeah, keep me posted. Wait, you're saying that 300 x 300 x 400 is a small printer? LOL.
Soo cool! New sub bro! I want to get 3D Printer too, maybe someday. When i will get it i will 3D print it ofc!!! But what material or something did u use to the first one?
First of all, Thank you for Subscribing! 3D printers are certainly cool, they unlock endless possibilities and give you the chance to make things that would otherwise be impossible from either a traditional manufacturing standpoint or a financial one. My 3D printer is nothing special, less than $200 new, I'm not sure what they're going for nowadays. I think I have more money wrapped up in the filament than anything else though. The material I use the most is PLA because it's cheap and easy. Thanks again!
The handles and pivots work perfectly, but the top 1/2 of the blade keeps deattaching and fails. Any specific slicer settings/advice? (Ender 3 S1)
I understand what your saying I think, but dont understand how it's happening. I basically printed it with the Cura standard settings for PLA.
Doing a live print on my youtube right now! . Gave you a sub !
Loving it!
maybe you can ad some extra slot to it that can be closed of later to ad a bit more weight to the handels ?
Getting a balance to the knife wasn't something I thought about. Luckily though the balance and overall weight doesnt feel too bad altogether. A method of holding the knife closed, a D-ring or something, would be nice. Thanks for the suggestion! Different mindsets are definitely a good thing to achieve the best final results.
@@sanfordprime I hope its ok to ask but it would be nice to work on some projects with other model creators. Do you maybe have interest in that ?
Lol, that sounds like my typical day at work. I'm up for anything though, always looking for the next challenge.
shown this to a friend and he wants to know if this has to be printed vertically or laying flat.
It was designed to be support free when standing vertical. I haven't tried printing in any different orientations myself, but have heard from others that laying flat does not work.
I just printed one, but the joints did not loosen up, it just snapped, any advice?
What material are you using? Mine were made from PLA with cooling at 100%. If you're not cooling it, the layers may drop and fuse to where they shouldn't. Also orientation, make sure you're printing with it standing up on the hinged end. Good luck!
The model after like 50% print progress falls over on ender 3 v3 se, I added brim and it also falls over, maybe needs a z hop? or slower print speed?
Sometimes people tune their printers to be fast, slinging the bed (and print) back and forth quickly. Build plate adhesion definitely comes into play. Some build plate materials are meant to release easily. For mine, it's a standard build plate, I applied glue stick for better adhesion and oriented the part standing up but kinda rotated at 45 degrees to help fight the growing inertia a little from becoming destructive torque. I didn't change any speeds from what ultimaker cura recommended for my Ender 3. If nothing else, I hope this helps... good luck!
@@sanfordprime ahh yes the adhesion might be my problem, the plate they gave me release material easily, I also ordered a different plate, might try that one next time, and I have to get a glue stick, and I will reduce the overall print speed, cuz cura recommends huge speeds for my printer (it set travel to 250 mm/s, I instantly tuned it down)
Glue stick is practically a part of my build plate now 🤣. Good luck with your next print!
I'm so stupid 🤦♂ I printed it flat, which made me spend like 2 hours getting them out and sanding it.
I already tried 4 times with abs filament, and all off them warping. Can you help me? tks
I print with ABS on rare occasions and have not had the best of luck with it. I have not tried to print this from ABS myself... only PLA. Maybe more cooling? TBH, I dont really know. Maybe someone else perusing the comments could answer?
Hey Sanford i printed one of these last night but off the print bed it doesn't open. If you don't mind can you share your print settings? Thanks
I am using a bone stock ender 3 and PLA material. Also using ultimaker cura for the slicer with the built in settings for the Ender 3. Some suggestions would be to check your print orientation, it is designed to be printed standing on end with no supports. 1mm wall thickness to 100% infill will work. Make sure cooling isn't 100% for PLA. No brims, no supports are necessary. Hope this helps.
T does take some pulling to get it open so be careful not to break the pivot pins. Where do you see it getting stuck together?
@@sanfordprime I did print upright and at 100% infill. I am assuming its getting stuck together on the blade but mostly the pins.
@@brickfilmed3989the ones I printed did take some effort prying apart... once the temporary bonds were broke it was a little crispy until it worked in to be smooth as glass. Pry it apart, you got nothin to lose... it doesnt work right now anyways. While prying, try not to break the pins off, kind torque around them. If it breaks it will be more obvious where it was improperly fused together... sorry not much help, but if it helps, I understand. My first one was a bust, but I learned from it.😉
Where can we download the file
Edit: just found it on thingyverse😂
Awesome! Thanks for the update.
what is the recomended fillament to use for a tina 2 to print this?
I used PLA on my ender 3... I do not know what a Tina 2 is... maybe someone else can help?
@@sanfordprime oh........ Thanks
do i need to print it at a 45 degree angle
Dont need to, I just did it so the building inertia as it got taller on my bed slinger didnt try to snap it off. I have successfully printed it straight since then more than once. The 45 was just some added security it wouldnt try to snap itself off the build plate. Good luck!
Also when i print it it chunks up 30min in
Re-slice it and see if it still happens. I had 1 slicer issue (out of many) that threw me onto a wild goose chase and wasted a bunch of ABS... see the gopro equinox video and you'll find my issue in there. But yeah, try reslicing it.
do u need supports?
No supports are needed, just print it standing up on the hinge end. Good luck and have fun!
Please can you help here i can not for the life of me open up with out breaking it i am using simplify 3d 20% infill. .2 layer height on a cr10s pro direct drive it comes out mint but i keep breaking it it will not let me open it up from the top at all it just breaks on the hinge area any ideas would be really appreciated .. i have tried 4 times now it just seems to solid around the two pins like fused together..
I'm not familiar with that filament. I can say that mine were printed with PLA and fan cooling at 100% with mostly stock Ender 3 settings that Ultimaker Cura gives. Other than that, print orientation is key... it must be standing up on the hinge end. It's a possibility the extruder temp is too high? All the ones I've printed have broke free relatively easy though with the clearances that are designed in. Do you have PLA you could try?
sorry the filament i am using is PLA. simplify 3d is the slicer name, i am standing it up on the hinge end also at 45deg print took 5 hours 30min maybe if i download CURA and try that slicer ? that would be very annoying if that worked as i paid for simplify3d
@@allanmcconnochie5421 I agree, I've been using Cura since day one myself with no complaints, it does well for what I need. Is this the only print you're having troubles with using that slicer/printer/material combo?
just thinking... what is your wall thickness? 1mm wall and thicker, maybe 1.5mm, is what I usually print with for parts like this. I've heard that these knives can be printed with 0% infill, of course I've never tried that though... but I have printed it with 5% all the way up to 100%.🤠
Whats the infill and layer height?
I usually use 1mm walls on things like this and gyroid infill at 10%. Layer height is 0.2mm. I've printed these as really light too all the way up to solid though with no problems. Solid gives it a nice heft.
@@sanfordprime i just successfully printed one at 50% infill and .2mm layer height and it turned out amazing, thank you for the model keep up the great work!
Incredible! Thank you for commenting, it just made my day! 👍
do i print with supports
Its designed to be printed standing up as shown in the video. As long as its printed that way no supports are needed.
Hi!
Which program did you used for this?
I'm using solidworks for 3d modeling and cura for slicing
Thank you!
And is it free?
No it's not free but I do believe there is versions for students and makers available?
No problem 👍
where can you find the print
There are links to the Thingiverse models and Printables models in the description of the video. Have fun!
@@sanfordprime thanks!
Can I sell these at my school?
Oh man, gdog... sell them sure... but school is probably not the most appropriate place...
Make the blade thicker its not durable
Sorry to hear that... maybe someday I'll jump back into it. I've printed over a dozen that I need to break first. 🤘
ok but why did my comment not arrive here
I see it, it's here... 👍
@@sanfordprime but earlier I comemmented to ask if im allowed to sell these to random ppl and the comment didnt go thrue
