your SN mix is too low
One of the few Mega Drive games(Only game?) that Europeans had the pleasure of playing at its intended speed. TecoSoft wanted to make sure everyone gets the full experience. Good job TecnoSoft, RIP.
Ristar and Alien Soldier were PAL optimised. There are others.
Not true, The terminator was optimised for PAL regions, which wasn't for the NTSC, which means the OST is "Too fast".
@@SirRigbyBaconKaiser and Shadow of the beast.
While the music is optimised, the gameplay is not.
Pal version has much less slowdown.
35:12 Metal Squad (Stage 8), Is outstanding
Preach it!
By the way, your Mega Man remixes are fantastic.
Moop Bread Thanks mate! I'm gonna redo alot of my older ones I did as I was an amateur back then
even though they have a lot of views, I'm a perfectionist and am not satisfied with them
Sounds amazing! I can't wait!
With this track the game begun to get real nasty!
Thunder Force 3 and 4 are both on Switch under Sega Ages. GET BOTH!
Other uploads of this soundtrack have more high-end (so Down Right Attack almost hurts a bit to listen to). This one sounds great, thank you!
I get the feeling that sega devs were inside a room talking to each, asking how to be different from nintendos family friendly image. and someone walks in with a casette of the new metallica album and everyone went "ahhhh, okay"
Old genesis tracks are the best. They were so forward thinking with their sound. All the little pitch bends. All the patches they were able to get. The arrangement and composition is of course a key element as well. The music from this era of gaming truly blows my mind in relation to were music was at.
Also to everybody who still has a SNES boner I'll kindly redirect you to 10:57 thanks
I don’t think anyone did a better job than Technosoft with it.
@@iwanttocomplain streets of rage 2 is on par with this legendary music, it's that good, listen to it
@@LavaCreeperPeople of course I know that one. Some more great OST’s are Develish, Master of Monsters, Verytex, The Adventures of Batman and Robin, Bran Stoker’s Dracula, Alien 3. The output of Matt Furniss.
@@iwanttocomplain NICE
Thunder Force games on the Genesis all have really great music.
I've never heard anything from Thunder Force III. Is it just as good as this?
Moop Bread It certainly is.
Moop Bread it is as good , even better. It is as good than people tell it, it's that good. To conclude: it's good.
oomusd I like this game's music a bit better, but I agree. It's damn good, and worth checking out.
This has more clarity and obviously metal squad
Sounds so, so much better than other videos of this OST floating around on CZcams. Less overly harsh.
Probably because it’s real hardware
56:26 Stand Up Against Myself (Staff Roll)
14:15
God that shit hits hard!
as a kid I never liked shot em ups but this one had the combination of music and graphics that was impossible to ignore. I haven't seen a video for years but I still remember in the first levels masterful use of parallax. what a gem.
Top 3 Mega Drive soundtracks for sure. Metal Squad is not only the best tune in this game, but also probably the best FM Synth track I have ever heard in my life
I preferer the progressive rock songs
Even though it's been 2 weeks already, Happy 30th Anniversary to Thunder Force IV (released July 24th, 1992 in Japan). Without a doubt my favorite 16-bit shoot 'em up of all time. Let's not forget the amazing kickass rockin' soundtrack.
If there’s a better shmup I like to know.
@Chuck Stegall I meant across all platforms!
The thing TF4 does which hasn’t really been done anywhere else is pace the game almost like a film.
The ‘camera’, music and scenes somewhat tell a story.
This is re-enforced by the end title sequence which is reminiscent of a film like Top Gun.
I remember my dad getting home one day with Lightening Force because he wanted a shooter for himself... man I loved it, it's actually the only shooter I like. I remember making it to level 8 without loosing a life, only to lose them all on that level... Awesome game play, graphics, and music.
Happened the same to me in Shinobi 3.
Imagine listening to this on a SNES with sampled sounds. Dear god, the horror.
With those awful captain commando overdrive guitars
Imagine 2022 and there are still people out there that don't know the console war of the 90s is over and we were so blessed to have both the snes and megadrive/genesis on the market. About snes music capabilities, listen to David Wise work ...
The SNES can do rock well enough. Ever played R-Type III?
You can do this Soundtrack on SNES , but it would require quite some amount of ROM to make it sound better as the MegaDrive version.
Greatest, and most technically advanced, 16-Bit OST there ever was. Thank you for this Dustin! 😁🤟🏻
Personal Favs:
08:35 Evil Destroyer (Stage 1 Boss) [sounds like Doom's first stage]
14:14 Attack Sharply (Stage 2 Boss)
23:39 Strike Out (Stage 4 Boss)
27:10 Stranger (Stage 5 Boss)
35:12 Metal Squad (Stage 8)
47:24 War Like Requiem (Stage 10 Boss) [Sounds like Inflames to me a bit 48:02]
56:26 Stand Up Against Myself (Staff Roll)
1:13:56 Omake 5
Anyone else hurts your neck??
The game it's hard like hell, specially when you are headbanging the OST!!
I am not a shump guy, but this game it's probable the BEST on any 16 bits system.
Awesome graphics, incredible (synthmetal) music, good story., epic final boss, even the credits are so epic!
I couldn't agree more. Nothing's more satisfying than to hear those savory explosions after defeating a boss.
Holy shi*. I been hearing this OST from start and it's kicking my buttttt
* shit
grad1u53's version sounds a bit more face melty. Not to be rude but everyone should hear it. :3
This with headsets, is an eargasm.
Exactly.
Another kick-ass genesis sountrack!
Excellent, with this original hardware there are no missing notes when volume increases/decreases (ending themes).
Thanks for this great recording of the best Mega Drive soundtrack... ;-) It shows that the real YM2612 is more gentle and pleasant to the ear in generating sound content with high frequency harmonics, compared to emulators.
The sound designers from Technosoft outdid themselves with this soundtrack, because it features both kick-ass compositions and truly outstanding FM patches, which, I think, are simply unmatched by any other soundtrack. This is the diamond class of FM synthesis.
And, as with all the best FM soundtracks, it is completely free of samples, because the sound designers knew that you can make superior sounding drum patches with FM synthesis.
+porcorosso81 Yes indeed. The sound programmers at Technosoft managed it perfectly well to use echo channel's, melodic changes and correct use of PSG detuning. (and also used all 6 FM-Channels and the 3 PSG waves at once for their sound) Just think about the drum patches created with the only use of FM in any game from them.... I must say i have expierience in programming FM-Synthesis, but creating such drums (Bassdrum, Snare, Tom's) on only one channel and by patch change(?) is just sooo damn hard work! (And also saves a lot more space on the cartridge than PCM Samples.) Just for the soundscape creation from the game itself Mr. Yamanishi should be honored.
(But i guess in japan they were able to learn the programmability of Yamaha's FM-soundchips for use in videogames. directly from Yamaha....or they had some 300 Page Manuals who were not able to be found these days.)
Btw. I never thought in my childhood there could be more complexity with Mega Drive's sound hardware than Road Rash 3.....poor me.
How technosoft made their music is just the like HI'fi Records among FM-synthesis.
(especially if you thought "Take on Me" was a great example of what a FM Synthesizer's could offer....)
Mellow Notes
I think the reason for superior sounding FM tracks from Japanese composers lies in the fact that there were multiple Japanese PC/Home Computers released with Yamaha's 4OP FM synth architecture (Yamaha CX-5M, Sharp X68000, PC88...). These people probably learned their craftsmanship by programming their own soundroutines very early on those type of computers. Maybe by using Yamaha's official documentation, but most probably also by disassembling and reverse-engineering other people's/companie's sound code. Of course, you could also do sound patch design on Yamaha's 4OP FM keyboards, which also share the same sound architecture (DX9, DX21, DX27, DX100). Some Genesis games actually use factory preset patches from Yamaha FM synthesizers.
Anyway, Thunderforce IV is a class of it's own, and yes, the FM patches in games are generally much more sophisticated than what was used in actual music productions in the 80's. Even considering that they mostly used the superior 6OP sound architecture from the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer. Imagine if Yamaha ever decided to sell their 6OP FM sound architecture on the open market...
+porcorosso81 Agreed and well stated! I think the Japanese reaped the advantage of familiarity with the hardware and fertile home-computer 'hacking' environments giving them the chance to really become acquainted with what was possible.
I've been having a lot of fun peeking into some of the tricks and implementing them myself, but that is another post for another day!
+DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL
I can only imagine what would have happened if back in 1987, Adlib chose the YM2151 to become a PC music sound standard, instead of the much inferior YM3812 2OP FM synthesis chip.
From time to time, I also get the urge to explore FM patch programming on my DX7. Each parameter opens so many directions to go that you can easily spend hours, even days to create a single patch. Knowing this makes me appreciate the Thunder Force IV track much more.
It's a shame that FM got a really bad reputation due to overuse of DX7 preset sounds in the commercial music industry, and the choice of the YM3812 OPL2 in the western hemisphere as the PC sound standard.
Did you know that Yamaha just released, after a long time, a new FM synthesizer this year? It's a 4OP FM synthesizer called "Reface DX" with modified user interface and architecture (each operator can have feedback)?
porcorosso81 Exactly. This is what i ment when it comes to programming FM-synthesizers. each parameter change gives a slight change in the outgoing sound.
And to make so many (Very good) patches for a Game ... is just crazy...you can really tweek a whole week or longer for one good patch (especially when you have 6 instead of only 4 operators. what gives you more room to explore than someone would expect.) this is what make me gobsmacked when i hear a Track on the genesis thats so good "instrumentalised".
But i heard ad-Lib had General MIDI capabilities....made it easy to play, but stupid to use.
And i think many sound programmers became lazy with its soundchip.
its very very difficult to get something useful out of 2-operators. (To say it wents from fart to noise very quick.)
And well. When the DX7 came out 1984 the music producers went nuts for its price, (A Roland Juno 60 was still twice as Yamaha's price) bought one and had no clue of programming. (that's why you can identify a DX7 in 80's pop music. just by its stock patches.) for examlple "Bass.1" or "E-piano.1". Or on the 4-Op's the "Lately Bass" or on DX100/21 "Solid Bass" patch used acutelly in 90's dance and pop music basically good, but really went just so overused...
Yes i heard about the "Reface DX" i think it is good step from yamaha to relive their classic series of instruments for people who want try (Reface CS, CP, YC and DX) but there is one thing i don't like about all of them....why are they so tiny....they have money to make bigger....(or to make a plug for a guitar strap.)
THE BEST shooter ever made. This game is a masterpiece. Regardless of your age, if you're a gamer you have to play this. This game hits you hard in every aspect. It's fast paced, it has great 16-bit graphics, the gameplay is responsive, the stages are well design and the transitions between stages are AMAZING with the next one immediately starting after you defeat the boss as the screen quickly fades and the song of the next stage immediately starts playing. Very cool! Speaking of songs I guess that's why we are all here. This soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. High tempo just like the game. This game starts on a high and stays on a high. Do yourself a favor and bump up the volume of your speakers before you play this masterpiece. You will not regret it.
Whatever happened to game soundtracks being this amazing....?
Strike out is just amazing . Gives you a panic vibe like hurry the hell up and finish this boss lol
Holy shit... That opening theme! Dayum Sega!
an hour and twenty minutes of music on one cartridge!
mrmong thats one of the advantages of the genesis soundchip they could also do a 10 hours soundtrack if they wanted to :)
MrDerOutsider Have you seen Jesper Kyd's compositions on the Genesis? They're so long, they could fit 10 hours had he composed more!
Arthur Oliveira Except it's not. If you're referring to the soundblaster (AdLib), I'd compare it more to the GEMS sound driver of the same system. Both can use MIDIs and edit them for their own sound system. Fortunately, neither TFIV or Jesper Kyd's OSTs used GEMS.
(Actually, I'm dumb. I don't even think AdLib used MIDI. In fact, I don't think any FM synth in general except GEMS use MIDI)
AND it comes with a free game!
One of my top 5 all time favorite shmups.
SOOOOOOOOOO many bangers to find here by the Omake tracks alone! Both the metal and the more seriously underrated techno like songs. It really sucks that Metal Squad usually gets all the atention tbh, really overrated track IMO.
Don't Go Off, Fighting Back, The Sky Line, Sand Hell, Neo Weapon, Sea of Flame, pretty much all of the Boss tracks (Shoutout to War Like Requiem, way better than the final boss itself), Silvery Light of the Moon, Stand Up Against Myself, Knight of Legend (My favorite rendition of it depite being a really shortened high score screen track, really gives me chills), Omake 2-4, I'm seriously only mentioning my personal favorites here and it's already worthy of a whole playlist!
The levels music are fusion jazz heaven
Welp, I'll be busy putting this on a CD ASAP, inputting into my Yamaha 5.1 Receiver and kissing my ears goodbye before they melt from the sheer awesomeness of that combination.
Particularly, Metal Squad. I hope the composers got some massive bonuses for cranking out this gem of a soundtrack.
Would love to read about that story (composers getting a bonus)
Sorry, I read "I heard the composers...."
1:47 the panning suddenly shifts to the left a bit.
11:55 shifts back.

ABSOLUTELY BANGING
Whatv a banger from my memory... I understand that it was one of my favorite game not only, all around was perfect, from gameplay to music ! to music ! thanks to all peopeple wiche made it to my megadrive !
"Genesis isnt the superior system. It sounds like total ass."
Technosoft: "hold our beer"
*Hold our 2612.
Technosoft made their own driver in order to do this. When you have coke addled engineers you get something amazing!
who is that a quote from anyway... i dont remember anyone saying that
Technosoft all drink from one cup you see
"hold our beer"
@@fhistleb That isn't true, cause all the instruments were handled by the basic sound driver of the genesis, you can see the deconstructed version of the ost
Well done Sega and M2 for bringing this back and introducing me to this masterpiece game.
nothing beats the growl of a model 1 2612, I love your channel and appreciate all the high quality rips! I'm glad this music can get more appreciation, it deserves it.
also, some requests that I personally would love to hear on the genesis- Toy Story, The Adventures of Mighty Max, Warsong/Langrisser I, Magical Hat, Virtual Bart, Osomatsu-kun: Hachamecha Gekijou, Twinkle Tale, Moonwalker, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (fighter), Rent A Hero.
Rediscovering the omake tracks after 20+ years with this game.
Love Omake 4.
23:39 Way to get you pumped up for a boss fight!! I love this game, thanks for the upload!
This is how DOOM32X should have sounded
Well some people have a fart fetish and also like Doom.
@konakonaa where did you get this backround information?
@konakonaa It wasn't a miracle, the 32X is quite a capable machine. With proper developement schedule it could have been much better.
@@queercommunist It was no Sarurn tho.
Check out DOOM resurrection on the 32X, definitely is what you're looking for
God Tier video game music!
"Sega Genesis has a sound chip that sounds like if it was 8-bit music" - Here's the answer to people that say such a thing.
Whoever said that is a chump. How can one hate the sound of the NES, PC Engine, SMS, and C64? Granted I prefer FM Synthesis when it comes to chiptunes but all of those had great soundtracks and unlike today where music can sound a bit generic at times back then each console had a distinct sound.
Well technically the Genesis does still have the PSG that the Master System has so in a way some songs sounding like they had 8 bit thrown in the mix was true.
some songs did use the PSG along with the FM synth
holy shit this sound chip sounds so raunchy as fuckkk suits this metal perfect
08:35 is where the tingles start running up and down my back.
Same. Tried to replay this with my band...badass.
This game could never be the same on the :technically superior 'snes (don't get me wrong I love both machines) but it would be slower, be in a lower resolution, have less sprites on screen and the music would be err... Different, orchestral flat samples with reverb can't match the harsh, rocking crystal clear fm baddassery magadrive music
Stephen hall Simply put, Genesis does what Nintendon't and Nintendo is what Genesisn't.
In other words, both have their strengths to run specific types of games.
Ah the "snes is a slow fake orchestra machine" meme, classic.
Marcel Weber He never said the machine was bad. Just that it isn't suited for this type of game. That and a SNES port might've been gimped in several ways like how TFIII was.
@@solarflare9078 TF3 wasn't even ported by the same guys so unfair comparison, Hagane would be a better comparison to technosoft games ironically. The console can do shmups just fine, MD is a bit better but sega fanboys tend to exagerate the gap, even TF4 itself slowdowns a lot.
Marcel Weber With TF4, I can tend to forgive the slowdown because it was pushing a lot of HUGE, well-animated sprites (most are 32x32 or bigger, including the explosions) and that I strangely seem to be getting less slowdown on higher difficulties, which may suggest the slowdown is intentional. (One spot in particular is the stage 2 miniboss; it slows down even if you check the option to disable it in the TF4 Switch port)
[EDIT] Also, I think the comparison is fair, as I'm not referring to what the SNES *can* do with a TF4 port, but more likely what would happen *if* TF4 got a SNES port. There's been plenty of gimped ports to other systems in the past anyways, like the entire Strike series, with Jungle on SNES being the best of the 3 and Urban the worst.
I get so pumped up.every time i hear the song that starts about 36 mins into it
Lol holy hell, how had I never heard this before?? I've gotta go try this game now!

AWESOME SOUNDTRACK!!!!
Holy crap this brings back some good childhood memories!!!
tottally classic
Love the second song. So glad I found the whole sound track of this game, Thank you.
This proves that Genesis didn't suck on the sound dept, but most of the composers and engineers got lost in the sauce. Too much to handle properly for them.
@Benjamin Owuye one of, if not the only one of those American exceptions was Jesper Kyd so far.
@Benjamin Owuye Sunsoft composers were also over the top
Most of the composers had small budgets and schedules and were forced to use GEMS which made 90% of the soundtracks sound like fart noises
@@PsychomachineryEBM Matt Furniss did a great job on the Genesis Mortal Kombat soundtrack. Honestly it sounds better than the arcade version, great sounding drums.

40:33 Down Right Attack (Stage 9) very memorable - the sudden switch midway from orchestra to rock threw me off first time. Shooters are hard enough for me as it is - they have to make it harder by distracting you with an awesome soundtrack.
Thank you for uploading all these genesis soundtracks on tuned up original audio and console especially this game so many road trips I play these
Amazing stuff right here!
Since I discovered this OST, I have wanted to emulate this video game. It's fantastic. Thanks for the generosity of publishing it.
This sounds much different from another video I listened to of this soundtrack. (The guy probably emulated it.) But I must admit, the addition of gameplay footage in his video was a nice touch. The gameplay was silenced though, of course.
+Moop Bread On the model 1 the high pitched distortion sounds (like in the beginning of the intro) are either cut out or much lower volume, and there's a bit more bass.
Best OST ever.
Wow... this is insane. It's Streets of Rage insanely good. Amazing.

Metal Squad = Genesis version of Soldier of Fortune from Loudness.. Glad to see the metal influence on this soundtrack.
Some of these tunes are nostalgic AF
TF 4 and SOR 2 were my absolute favorites back in the days. TF 4 was a very well produced/presented MD game. (Like a top SNES game, we often looked at with envy). If I remember correctly I could beat TF 4 on the hardest grade without losing one life. I had a piece of paper with my high scores ’cause there was no game save. I loved to go to the menu and listen to the music for hours with my headphones on. My younger brother and me had very different taste for video games. (I think he never played TF 4 a single time - he just disliked shmups. But together we played the hell out of SOR 2). Too bad that I sold my MD. Could be that it was one with a good sound chip ’cause I got it rather early (SNES wasn´t around yet).
Thx god u gave me the A + Start menu to get 99 lives!
All about that Metal Squad yo.
el mejor juego que tuve en mi megadrive, superjugable y la musica totalmente adelantada a su tiempo (en el mundo del videojuego me refiero) me encantaba. y ahora la puedo disfrutar aqui. que grande!!!! no es por tirarme flores, pero me pasaba el juego sin consumir apenas vidas y con un puntaje realmente alto. hace poco volvi a jugar con el en un emulador y quedo demostrado que perdi toda mi habilidad XDXD!!best game on my megadrive. i loved the hole soundtrack and now i can enjoy it here. thank you very much
power ranger vibes there at the beginning
Everyone it's talking about Metal Squad or Lightning Strikes Again (and I don't blame you) but no one remember how good it's Evil Destroyer (8:35).
Don't Go Off (Course Select) is my shit
A Masterpiece. That's all I can say about it
Only the Genesis could have a heavy metal songs that were actually heavy
The best soundtrack on the Sega Genesis along with Sonic CD, imo
I've never played this game, but holy shit, what a soundtrack!
You definitely should play it
Gradius3 uploaded these as well, but not having that gameplay in the video here makes me feel like I'm not missing something if I just let this bad boy play in the background, as it was intended. :)
35:12-Yumi loves Metal Squad (Stage 8)! "Consider the house.....ROCKED!"

Im just gonna go ahead And say. This is. The. Best ost on the ole sega genesis even better than sonic and his is absolute gold too i cant. Stop. Listening. To. It

Very nice. Thanks for recording on real hardware. My Genesis is unfortunately VA7 with the re-ramped sound chip (and its atrocious audio quality that goes along with it.)
:(
Man I wish I could replace that Genesis with a good one like my Non-HDG VA6.5 for you or something. The VA7 should be burned at the stake but then again, it has the best video of all the model 1 systems. To have a perfect VA7, that's gonna require a Mega Amp.
