Welcome to the Letterman CZcams Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. The language may strike you as quaint & flowery, the clothing comically lacey & ornate - but that’s how things were back in this colorful and now bygone era. - Zábava
Tom Hanks being presented to a talk show with Smell Like Teen Spirit intro is something I would've never guess seeing in my life time. Scratch that one off the list.
Nod to Sleepless in Seattle
@@zackwetzel2158dammit I wanted to be the one😡
"Stop bending the shaft!" has been an often repeated catch phrase in my life since this originally aired 😃
My wife and I met just about a week before this aired. We watched it together that night and have been saying "Stop bending the shaft!!" for 30 years now.
I’ve told many a GF “… Stop Bending the Shaft!!!”
Mine too!
I remember watching this when originally broadcast…laughed to tears…and “bending the shafts” lives rent free in my head. Hanks did so well on Letterman. Always worth staying up late to watch..
Best part of the whole show!
Took me a long time to accept “Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra.” It’ll always be the “World’s Most Dangerous Band” to me.
The cool thing is they reverted to that name after they left CBS.
I love that the Top Ten is included at the beginning to help give the whole video some better clarity and context.
Can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not. If yes, I dont get it.
If no, can you explain your statement?
Tom Hanks is one of the few people who could totally keep up with Dave, and sometimes get him completely off balance, in these interviews. He is always energetic and hilarious.
No matter what late night show he goes on, he always brings the goods. Not many guests understand that they're performing too.
He obviously prepared material
Tom could certainly hold his own. A really great interview.
There's something about life that seems very unfair; when the greatest living actor we now have, can also be this funny!?
I can’t get the 2 phrases “Roustabout” and “Stop bendin’ da shafts” outta my head😁
I love when Tom Hanks talks about his love of Elvis films! I thought that I saw him sing “Roustabout” as Elvis at some point during his press junket last year, but could never find the clip again - because I was thinking of this interview instead!
These uploads of Dave are making my morale so much better!
One of the best talk show guests of all time, Tom Hanks.
I think Tom Hanks understood and participated in this format. Bring celebs to sell their movie and entertain the folks. A comsumate entertainment.
Man Tom was on fire he was the right guest to have. Thanks for all the years of great laughs Dave ❤
Hearing Paul and the boys playing Nirvana out of the break and realizing it's been 30 years(!) since that song and this interview is breaking my brain.
I was born in ‘84 and will never forget my mom regularly having Dave on her bedroom tv in the 90s. Those were the days. Tom was unequivocally one of the best guests there was. I miss this.
Imaging starring in Big, A League of Their Own, and Sleepless in Seattle and none of them being in your top 10 grossing films 😮.
@paulpm1974that's not what he's saying
Illuminati
Don't worry, it won't be last time Dave says "BUTTAFUCO"
Well Dave pointed something out about when people started to notice Tom wasnt just an entertaining actor but a great one but I was in the theater and remember the exact moment it happened, Radio Flyer, everyone left the theater saying you know I always liked Tom Hanks he was soo good.
Tom Hanks, my man! First time I've ever seen Paul not know a song.
Tom Hanks was ALWAYS one of the most entertaining guests on any show.
That tossed off "Roustabout" bit from Hanks could have been written today by Mulaney. It's fantastic.
This is and will always be the best interview.
Tom Hanks at the height of his powers! So funny, quick witted, and great! Love this interview! Also Dave at a peak as well. I never really did adjust to the CBS years, good as he still was. Anyway, thanks for sharing this. ❤
100% agree. While still ok, Dave and his show never regained its quirky magic of the late 80s/early 90s.
I would tune in now to watch Paul & "The World's Most Dangerous Band", play for a hour.
Adrienne Barbeau… fully understood.
One of those unwritten showbiz rules, if you're starting or ending a talk show, you must book Tom Hanks...
It's a shame Dave went to CBS. He had a strong run at NBC. Makes you wonder what MIGHT have been.
I love how Tom clandestinely forecasts both his appearance as Colonel Tom Parker in Elvis and 2 separate bits in his directorial debut, That Thing You Do by mentioning the plate spinning act on Ed Sullivan and Suzanne Pleshette at Chasen's.
Tom Hanks is freakin hilarious
Tom Hanks brought his 'A' game.
I watch clips from this show every day. Thank you for posting them.
I got to be in the audience of David Letterman back in 1986. He is my all time Late Night Talk host with Conan coming in next. His stupid pet and human tricks were gold. The crazy stuff he was allowed to do was magical. Loved the Top Ten and it was such a big deal, that many news and radio stations would air them the day after his show. His salute to the Military and having almost every current Medal of Honor winner was nice as well. Besides the 2 Chief Warrant Officers who had been shot down During Desert Storm. Those guys were funny.
I was in the audience once, as well, and it was 1986, as well.
Dave was definitely different. Along with 3 landmark gags you mentioned he had, the alka-seltzer suit, the velcro suit, random phone calls, the "dancing waters" fountain in front of his desk...not to mention all the people that would show up just to jam with the band... Warren Zevon, David Sanborn, EVH etc... Similarly to the radio stations...me and my best friend would take turns recording the show (audio) on our boomboxes and listening to them after school the next day.
Truth be told, Meg Ryan does fit the profile of an Amway distributor!
Also, would be great to see Tom's first appearance on the Late Show.
It's available on CZcams.
Dave was 100% correct about Paul and the band.
wait... 30 years ago???!!!! whaaaaaa .....
These interviews are classics in their own right.
This is what TV used to be.
Wow - Great clip!! Who doesn’t LOVE Tom Hanks? 💕
I don't like him he's a loud mouth liberal yuck.
Republicans
People that see how awful Hollywood is and has become!
Waiting for this since 1899!!! Great interview by Tom. I posted many years ago on a less than stellar copy of the "Stop bending the shafts" joke; had me laughing on the floor when I saw it on TV originally. Thanks for the upload.
@@robertgoerss 😀Irony? Sardony? Exaggeration to make a point? That escapes you? Unless you are in with the joke.
Dave said bye with class but notice there were no tears.
It was a change, but it not an end for Dave - and he wasn’t moving on alone.
A national treasure.
Holy heck this interview was off the charts!
A lot of people have worked on Cher.
Hi-yo! 🥁
@@robertgoerssI interpreted this as a reference to Cher having plastic surgery, not multiple boyfriends.
40 men eee I never knew thanks
Dave's 1993 signoff makes me sad. I was single parenting and so I missed a ton of Late Night shows, no time for watching tape either, and then 11 years went by zing.
This was the opening of "Sleepless in Seattle", their lives would change forever🧚♀️
It was a great last show that will be 30 years ago on Sunday. You can find all of it elsewhere here on CZcams.
I have always thought Dave’s closing remarks were more eloquent here than on CBS, particularly the comment how they began on a cold day in February in 1982, and now here there were on a lovely summer evening in June eleven years later (a few minutes later he mentions that incoming Conan O’Brien once killed a guy.)
In all fairness, Dave's last words on CBS were introducing Foo Fighters.
The Slappy White story I heard when it was told live....that day....since then i"ve got in engraved in my brain......his timing and interpretation of Slappy running with his arms all over the place is priceless
This channel is great! Where the hell did 30 years go!? Thank you 🤟
"The next time we see you folks, it will be Monday night, August 30th... at 11:30".
Kind of like a final "up yours" to NBC for not giving him the Tonight Show.
I wonder which Academy award Slappy was nominated for?
It doesn’t look like he was ever nominated for any. But I’m pretty confident you can get invited to the Oscars for any number of reasons besides personally being nominated for one.
I’m with Tom on the cleavage thing!
Stop bending the shafts! Classic on the last 12:30 show.
Definitely the good old days 🙂
You can tell Tom probably just got done filming ‘Philadelphia’ here.
Tom hanks was really succesful before becoming really really succesful
This is BEFORE Forrest Gump. Put that in perspective!
Tom hanks wasn't America's father back then, he was only our cool uncle, Sam's brother
Thanks for posting this one:)
Iconic moments in television....
This appearance proves no guest ever better.
Did anyone else go and watch the trailer for “Roustabout” after this and decide that they’ve got to see it?
Just for Barbara Stanwyck
No, definitely no. I had already seen it. I’m afraid Elvis didn’t make any decent movies, but it was in his contract.
@@fayedapiran5737 I didn’t say anything about it being good. I want to see it because it looks hilariously terrible.
And here it is 2023, who would have expected Tom Hanks to become Mr. America....the embodiment of Mr. America?
Dave was on Conan's show only four times because, reportedly Conan kept bending the shaft.
If you do the math, this HAD to be taped right before Hanks won the Oscar for Philadelphia later that year and right before his filming of Forrest Gump.
Well, obviously.
This was taped in June 1993.
Filming for "Forrest Gump" began on August 27, 1993.
Tom Hanks won an Oscar for "Philadelphia" at the 66th Oscars in March 1994.
Also probably before he vacationed at a certain island....
It's so easy to love Tom❤
Great intro music. Tie in to Sleepless in Seattle. Seattle home of grunge.
love this
Tom Hanks introduced, and the band played Smells Like Teen Spirit. Wow.
I guess it was the Seattle "connection"..
Great appearance! Haven’t seen this one before.👍
What a gem!
Smells Like Teen Spirit? Nice one Paul :)
Best TV Band in Bidness😂Yessssss!
Great Stuff!
Wasn't the Boss the last musical guest also?
YOU'RE BENDING THE SHAFTS!
Nice of Tom to participate in a “Stump The Band” segment
Dragnet is great! I don't care what you say Tom!
Hey Dave!!!!
Re gems, anyone recall a Dave live-cam (desk-to-street) interview w/a guy who opened his coat to show hanging watches he was hawking? Who has that on tape? What was the segment called? (Nbc? Cbs?early 90’s)
Tom was on !
Idk where to put in this request but can we get some Tracy Morgan interviews with Dave?
8 o'clock on Sunday 🤣😭🤣🤣🤣👍
YOU'RE BENDING THE SHAFTS!!!
😮
Wow looking at Tom Hanks.. Him and Neil Peart look like twins 😂😮❤
Especially later in life.. They really start looking alike 😂
Ahh Bob Saget!
lol tom hanks turned in to forest gump on his shair story for a sec ptre gump gump lmfao
Tom Hanks thank you for this beautiful movie I enjoyed it a lot surrounded by my family we really loved it thanks a lot I cried a lot at the End!
WHAT A MOVIE!!!!
Ironically in the future, Tom was to feature in a movie about Elvis.
You don’t say!
One should take care to never bend the shaft
If he wanted, Tom could’ve been a great standup comic on the same level of Robin Williams.
What was late-night tv like years ago?
I stand with Tom. I too will not appear on the CBS's Letterman show! Take that, Mr. Shobiz. lol.
Oh ive got it.! "Tim Mix'! Peter Griffin.😅.
Cool he paused before sitting and then senses Letterman wanting him to sit first, and then sits down
You edited out Paul and the band going out to commercial to Heartbreak Hotel!
YA BENDIN THE SHAFTS!!!
STOP
BENDING
THE SHAFTS!!
We didn't get to read the credits. Or even ignore them.
My favourite Elvis movie is “Change of Habit”.
Everybody loves him.
My man Tom hanks. That's what I am talking about
Wow, 30 years ago today! I was 26 😃
Tom has material!
@me I can't believe it's 30 years ago.
Tom Hanks was en fuego.
