We could not agree more. Any quality rifle accessories are welcome gifts instead of the usual useless crap we get at Christmas, which gets thrown away.
I use that same Vortex scope, and it has worked well for me. In fact, I have used a Vortex optic on the last fifteen rifles that I have bought, and I haven't ever had a problem.
Tom I know exactly what you’re talking about with that black ring inside the scope. I’ve been a Leupold fan for years but I’ve switched to MeOpta going forward. They are a little heavier but the glass clarity, features and overall build quality you get with them match or surpasses much more expensive Leupold scopes IMHO. Love your content and I want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas.
I have on reliable authority (my own)that there will be one under my tree this year. Glad I already ordered that exact scope with Talley bases and rings from Midway before you told the world! 😅 Also a set of dies for a new to me caliber. Excited for Christmas this year.
Congrats Steve, and I think we're both excited this year! The only thing I have left to get is the dies. And I remembered this morning that I hadn't ordered my scope yet and figured I had better do it before this video came out just in case!
Meopta meosport in R3 in 4x15 in 44mm for $400. On sale through Bud’s right now the best scope on the market right now for that price and free shipping too🤔😳 Leupold is my favorite too but for the same scope is $300. More plus shipping
in regards scopes: in Germany hunters seem to buy either, Swarovski, Zeiss, Leica... most of them costing between 1.800 and 2.800eur. I am closer to 50 than 40 and honestly I don't get the difference to more budget friendly scopes anymore. I kept 2 Swaro scopes and for the other rifles I use Steiner, GPO or DD Optics. DD Optics produces in Japan and you can buy them for 700to 900eur depending in the magnification and options. They come with paralaxe adjustment and a very good red dot reticle. Stay safe and sound and have a woderful christmas time!
Congrats Tom on the Christmas gift that is on the way. You're right in that the accessories add up very quickly. I agree too that the Filipino made works a lot better than some other stuff in that area. I have it on better than good authority that I'm getting something new as well. However, it is more like your first center fire you mentioned so there is little need for accessories at this time.
Great ideas and video as always, I love the talley lightweight base/ring combos. 45-55$ but they work great. I only use Leupold and Burris scopes. I've never had and issue with either. The price on that 4-16 Vortex is very impressive! Thank you again for all of your great videos.
I've been watching your videos for a while; I glean a lot from older gentlemen like yourself. I used to sell vortex binoculars and spotting scopes, they are much cheaper than Leupold. But a vx1 is just as clear as a viper or comparable priced vortex. I would buy Leupold even a used Leupold over a vortex upto a vortex razor which are awesome. I bought a Leupold vx1 when I was 16 and have had it since then and its hopped thru probably 5 different rifles. Cheers
I live in WV. Most of my shots are pretty close. 140 is as far as I have ever shot a deer, which was this season. I have fallen in love with the Burris Fullfiele 2.5-10, illuminated. I’m a huge fan of the reticle and the scope seems really solid.
Joey I have a couple of 4x16 Burris scopes with the E1 reticle and those have been absolutely bullet proof. I've done most of my load testing with them and swap them from rifle to rifle all of the time and they just keep going. They also do great in low light. And cognates on the 140 yard shot! I just don't think most people realize that even 100 yards is a long shot in the field in field conditions without a bench and 140 certainly isn't anything to sneeze at.
Larger tube diameter if im not mistaken gives you more forgiveness when getting your eye up to the scope. Less shading on the edges. What i noticed on my lpvos . Take it for what its worth.
If you are getting a 700 long action, I have, somewhere in my gun safe, a Redfield one piece dovetail base with adjustable windage and 1 inch rings. It is rock solid and served me well for 40+ years. The problem with it is many new scopes have shorter tubes and won't give you proper eye relief. I replaced it with a picatinny rail that gives me much more adjustability with today's scopes.
2x7 or 2.5x8 scopes are Idea for deer hunt . Look at what scope magnification 270 Jack used out west. Use binoculars for glossing and sizing up deer. Leupold is the way to go. I find the 4.5 x14 too much magnification. I learned a hard lesson deer hunting with a 6x18 Scope many years ago. I like Burris Signature Scope mounts. I sight in adjusting the 2 piece scopes bases. Fine adjusting done with the Scope adjustments.
Hey Tom. You need to take a hard look at the Trijicon 3x9 Accupoint TR20-2G. "1 tube, very compact, 13.4 Oz, green fiber optic dot, no batteries, always on, extremely clear glass and built like a tank. I've been running one since 2012 and it's never failed, best $600 you will ever spend....trust me 👍
Mtnhunter, that's one thing I always liked about the Trijicon, no battery. And I've always heard they were built like a tank. I could definitely see myself trying one in the future.
It sounds from what you have described as to wanting a Leupold maybe 3.5x10 vx3 40 mm one inch tube because they are lightweight and holds zero and doesn’t have a lot of extra garbage on them
Close! Actually for this particular rifle Scott I was wanting the 4.3 for 14. The 4.5 is a little high for me on the low end but I would never carry this rifle to the woods. It's strictly going to be a longer range rifle.
@@TomRiverSimpleLiving I actually put one of those Vortex Diamondback 4.5 to 14 hp on my 22-250 it’s got a side parallax adjustment and out of the small amount of vortex scopes I have I like this one the best of them the most reason I like Leupold scopes is like you said about looking through the scope and having a good view and the eye relief is the best with Leupold most of the time and other than varmit cartridges I don’t like my eye that close to the eye piece
I didn't even know they went up to x20 in the Freedom line until I setup that 1885 Winchester and had already bought a Vortex. I was kicking myself for not getting the Leupold for that but for this rifle and for my budget for this rifle I think the Vortex is going to work well.
@TomRiverSimpleLiving I have a couple leupolds as well as a couple vortex. For the money you can beat the vortex. But there's something elegant about a leupold with that gold ring that looks so right on certain guns
And now we know why they have that gold ring on the Leupold's! LOL Buck, I've never even looked through a VX5 in the store. I'm afraid it would cost me to much, but one day!
@@TomRiverSimpleLiving well it was for my rifle. You know the one ill pass down one day. Over all my other rifles this one will be known as grandpa rifle. I came out of pocket a little more for it. It really all came down to the cross hairs. I really like the wind plex. Along with the thickness. Or lack there of.
sounds like your getting a .280 rem, my dad has one in a rem 700 bdl, i love that gun and want to get one myself. 280 is a flat out shooter! sad they have dwindled in popularity, i opted for a 7mag for now while im still looking for a 280 rem.
Scott I was pretty sure it didn't but I didn't even want to open that can of worms. I don't even know that a 50mm objective makes any practical difference.
I spent the extra money and bought a Carl Ziess scope with all the bells and whistles on it and hate that thing . Was not worth the money. Nothing like wasting hard earned money 😢
I can promise you that im not getting a rifle for christmas. But i know a certain guy who is just gonna buy myself one anyway.. Maybe not a rifle but im sure ill be a nice guy and get me something sweet. Ill even act surprised when i get it so im fooled into thinking i didnt know about it.

Hopefully this gives some people gift ideas!
I like Leopold, Simmons, Bushnell, Bushnell being my favorite
Enjoyed the video Tom, your views on hunting and taking ethical shots are on par with mine . Thanks for ideas on purchasing gear !
I'm glad you enjoyed it Mike.
I use that same Vortex scope, and it has worked well for me. In fact, I have used a Vortex optic on the last fifteen rifles that I have bought, and I haven't ever had a problem.
Very sound advice! Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep your videos coming please.

Nice video! I envy you having a chance at finding a new rifle under the tree. Best of luck!
Tom, I love the Vortex scopes. Good glass but the warranty is unbeatable. Buy it once and that's it. Can't beat Vortex and reasonable priced.
Warne mounts are awesome. I have a tikka t3x with their mounts. Solid. Very solid.
Great video Mr Tom
Thanks 308guy!

It's tough to get the Leupold's with those kind of price differences.

4x14 leupold 3x is funky on setting a full view objective

Spend the extra money and get what you really want and the Leupold warranty is the best. Buy USA. Just one opinion.
Amen!
👍👍

My M77 II 30-06 never failed me up in Lewis County. Coming from SC, I wasn't prepared for the many gunshots I heard on opening day either. Ha!

I would take a look at swfa 3x9 hunting scope. I have a 10x for my long range shooting great glass and a lot more rugged than Leopold vx3

Remington 700 mountain rifle in the rifleman/hunter cartridge
6.5 Swiss is my guess.
And we'll find out Christmas morning if you're right! LOL
Hi Tom. Why not have a look at Meopta?. They are superb. European glass and nothing made by the reds in those brother.

Tom! Leupold has a vx freedom 6-18x40 for 499$
I have one on my 270. Its perfect. Trimoa reticle and cds capable

Buddy of my brothers want me to put a scope on his Winchester 30-30. What would you recommend for a rifle that's 100 yard rife or less?
I just married a leopold. Vx 5 with wind plex to my rifle. 3x15x44. I like it a lot.

I miss the nikon scopes
They were good scopes and I was thinking the same thing while I was looking at the different brands available now.
Good on no cccp stuff .
Sending my wife this video😂😂
I have a new England 243 single shot
Good video would this maybe be a 284win rifle
Tube diameter doesn’t correlate with more or less light.

Did you find that 280? If I shot right hand they had a great rem 700 bdl with a drop mag. Beautiful wood. If it was left hand it would be in the mail.
We're going to have to wait until Christmas morning to see!
Marvin scopes?
I spent the extra money and bought a Carl Ziess scope with all the bells and whistles on it and hate that thing . Was not worth the money. Nothing like wasting hard earned money 😢
The HUNTERS cartridge. ?
Santa bringing you a 7 mauser in rem 700 my prediction from the 140
I’m sure said rifle that maybe coming for Christmas.. might be chambered in 280 Remington 🤷🏼♂️ just saying..
280 Remington

im guessing its not a 17 hornet LOL
LOL
OK Tom, stop beating around the bushes. What rifle is going under the tree?
We're going to have to wait until Christmas morning and see!
I love my long range rig and the way I have it set up for clear cuts here in Florida it’s worked every time 7mm rem mag is almost hard to beat
TOM, only thing you are getting is a piece of coal. 😊😊😊😊
That's way better than a bundle of switches! Believe me I know. LOL
Why are you being so cheap, when buying a scope. 😊😊
Because I just bought a truck and I'm remodeling a house! The only way I'm getting away with this is Mrs. River doesn't watch my videos. LOL
