    I moved to Raleigh 8 months ago after 9 years in Austin. It may be for lots of people but it definitely wasn’t for me. The heat was truly unbearable, the city expensive and hugely inconvenient to navigate. Other than the food scene there (which was amazing) I found it to be pretty overrated. So far the move to Raleigh has been an upgrade in every single way.

      @@pepsico815the weather is ABSOLUTELY an upgrade and continues to be one of my favorite things about living here. Summers do get hot (lots of days in the mid 90’s) and there is a decent amount of humidity but it’s not nearly as relentless as Austin. This is my 4th summer here and it’s consistently seemed like after a hot week or two we get a rainy week or a cold front and it knocks the temps down a bit. It also gets cool at night here even in the summer. I’m incredibly heat averse, and although there’s definitely still a decent Summer, it’s infinitely better than Austin. Also it starts in June instead of March and ends in September instead of end of October. 😂 Plus you benefit from 3 other actual seasons as well. I’d say Spring is the season that seems to last the longest here, and it’s also the most beautiful IMO.

    8.25% sale taxes does not apply on most of your daily food, whereas other states 6.25% sale taxes seems to be lower but in the end, the tax amount you have to pay at the grocery is much much higher compare with shopping at Texas grocery stores. The other big factor is NO income taxes in Texas!. It is true that property tax is high, but it is totally worth to live in much newer and modern house. Yes, I would complain about the weather as it is so hot in summer in Texas!

      Not sure how I feel about FAANG companies in Raleigh. We were strongly being considered as Amazons second headquarters and lost out. The traffic that that would have brought is astounding. I think the quality of life is severely affected with that kind of growth especially for the generation that experiences it. But then I don’t enjoy big city life.
      One of my friends who lives in Austin has told me that they can no longer do the things they used to enjoy because the crowds are so big and lines so long that they give up and go home. They are building a house away from Austin to get away from the crowds.

Too darn crowded and too darn hot, plus I felt exactly what you was saying on feeling land locked or confined here. I feel trapped personally. Love TX, yet I got to get away. Too much traffic, the police/community relations are not good.
    I have done my research and Raleigh is where I want to be. Lord willing next yr or no later than 25' I'll be on my way. The population is just right to what I am looking for. Growing up here in Ft. Worth as a teen in the 90's and in the early 2000's there was a freedom on the rd mainly the freeway without traffic. The communities seemed more like a smaller town vibe. From what I hear Raleigh has that community feel plus the proximity to a real beach instead of man made beaches at our lakes. I could go on.... I look forward to winters too we rarely get snow if anything it will be ice instead of snow or the snow will not stick.

    First, Texas varies dramatically depending on where exactly you live. It is bigger than any country in Europe and quite diverse. Central Texas is my favorite part of the world. The same can't be said for West or South Texas. Texas has no state income tax, so the revenue has to be made up in other ways, something to keep in mind when comparing cost of living. Please don't try to tell me that Asheville, NC has a lower cost of living! As much as I like living in Austin, the statement goes well beyond that. Anyone who has spent time on the east coast and the west will almost certainly have a definite preference. i am from the northeast originally and honestly have experienced the east coast for most of my life, and only experienced the west when I was well into my 40s. I was so sick of the east coast that I heeded the advice given to me, go west.
    It was there that I found paradise, not only in Texas, but I'm not looking to write a book here so I'll leave exploring the west to you individually. The best reason I can give you for living in the west is that I have family here, while my family in the east have either died off, or are totally estranged. Say what you want about ambiance, there is no comparison between the east vs. the west. I haven't found another supermarket chain that matches HEB, no comparison. The last (and only) pig roast I ever experienced was in Florida, not Texas. So spend time in both the east and west yourself, and then decide. That's all I can say without spending a lot more time and using a lot more words, so I'll end here.

    Unfortunately you moved to Texas during a year of record breaking heat. 2011 was hotter than normal in Texas but yes, even a normal Texas summer is not for the faint of heart. But Houston being the armpit of Texas is not a fair comment at all… If anything, Dallas deserves that title. Houston is on the level of Austin with its diversity and nightlife. As for your take on HEB…. Honey😳😳 that’s pure sacrilege!! HEB is one of the trade offs for the heat 😅😅 and one of the things I would miss most about Texas if I left. As for the dreary overcast winter?? 🤔 you must have lived near the armpit of Texas because in Houston, winter is very pleasant with blue skies most days. No we don’t have season change here… trees go from green to dead overnight 😅 but rarely a snowflake or gray sky to be found. I do believe that the winter of 2011 was also an anomaly here in Houston. I do vaguely recall more gray skies that year but it’s not typical.
    At any rate, with all that said, I found your video because I’m thinking of moving to North Carolina… 26 years of this heat is enough for me and I would like some changes of seasons in my life. So if I can break myself away from my HEB then North Carolina sounds like a winner 😍 thanks for sharing.

I lived there for 3 years and it wasn’t for me, especially the weather. I live in the DFW area now and I appreciate the safety of being land locked especially after going through hurricane Harvey, tax day flood, and Memorial Day floods. I’m super grateful to be far away from water like that. It was just too much. Also, the weather up here is far more comparable to 4 seasons. It gets cold up here and we see leave changes, etc. (I’m originally from the Rocky Mountain region so I call these baby winters but still a nice change of pace). I like the hilly terrain and lots of trees. Hands down, DFW economy can’t be beat though. I know NC is making progress in terms of becoming a tech hub which is cool, but it can’t compete with the opportunities out here. We have world class talent competing for some of the best jobs in the world plus all the diversity from people moving here makes for a good culture and food. I am from NYC originally and have trouble understanding the bad things people say about it. It's a pretty good place to live if you an east coast person. Houston is a difficult way of life. First, as hot as Austin is, it is nothing like Houston in the summer; and Austin doesn't have the humidity. It's a big diverse city and Houstonians are known for being friendly. Traffic can be insane in Houston, some of the worse in Texas. I've always enjoyed San Antonio and have considered living there. Cost of living much lower than Austin, but traffic is just as bad. By the way, eventually Austin and San Antonio are expected to become one metro area, with San Marcos in between.

    Can you comment about ticks? North Carolina looks great but how bad are the ticks? Do ticks jump on you when you go hiking. Do they jump on you when you are in your yard? I had a friend with Lyme disease from another state and now I stress about tick populations. That is the only unknown factor keeping me from moving to North or South Carolina.

    • @EllenPitts
      @EllenPitts  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes we do have ticks. Honestly they are pretty much everywhere on the east coast. I have only had trouble with them in areas with long grass. If you keep your yard maintained you won’t have problems. And when you go out hiking just do a tick check when you get home. They don’t bite right away….usually hours after they land so if you check you can catch them.
