Een beetje (1959) is still a classic here I think. Also de Troubadour (1969) everyone knows that song. Other classics here are: I see a star (1974), Ding-a-Dong (1975), Amsterdam (1980), Ik hou van jou (1984). I think the 90ties are too 'recent' to be really classics though so I leave it at that otherwise Vrede and Hemel en Aarde are deff classics

I’m from the Netherlands and I think that the biggest problem we have in Eurovision is that we totally focus on vocals (which is extremely important by the jury but not that much by the televoters...in my opinion) the televoting is more looking at the performances (which mostly totally suck😓) so I hope that one day we will Win again, but things really need to change. Cause Anouk (Birds) and Waylon & Ilse (calm after the storm) were perfect, and after them we went downhill again😓.
And I hope we’ll hold a national contest for the ESC one day, since I think that it might really do great for us.

i'm also Dutch and i totally agree. prior to the contest, the dutch media always say that we will win / get top five finish 'because we have an amazing singer'. yes, vocals are important, but that is not enough. you won't captivate millions of viewers with a strong voice only. you need the whole package. every year, something is missing. in 2017 for instance, we had amazing singers and the performance was OK, but the song itself was just dated. this was clearly reflected in the televoting. you can go on with every other year in recent hitory. we need new, fresh, people in our delegation with a different mentality: dare to send someone who might not be the best vocalist, but can perform a contemporary song amazingly with amazing camerawork and choreography.

“Nu komt de aap uit de mouw”, lol. Matt@ESCUnited, thanks for your comments. You asked about the 50’s classics: I believe people remember “Een beetje” (1959) more than “Net als toen” (1957) because Een beetje sounds cheerful, but Net als toen, wow, it’s the greater song imo, because of the melody and the violin solo.

My uncle actually helped to write many of the 1990's songs, most notable ones including 1999 (although he ended up in a law suit with the singer Marlayne, long story), 2002 (his girlfriend at the time, haha), and 2003. He also helped to write "Shine", but never indended it to be sang by the Toppers, it was intended to be a ballad. He wasn't amused at that at all so he stopped writing for the ESC and started working for the junior ESC.

As a Dutch I think "Ding-a-Dong" by Teach-In, may be one of the songs most people remember (and it won in the year i was born). "De Troubadour" is also a song much Dutch still remember.
A song I personally also find memorable was "Vrede" (peace) by Ruth Jacott.
A song most Dutch find memorable due to it being awful is "Niemand heeft nog tijd" (nobody has time anymore).
I will not talk about 2009 and 2010, as the CZcams moderators will surely ban me if I said my true honest opinions about those two entries, really. In 2010 I said a lot "I've never heard of the Netherlands, I don't know where the Netherlands is, and I don't speak Dutch"... Perhaps that indicates my feelings a bit.
The 2000 entry was actually tipped as a possible winner, but Linda messed it up a bit, which is a good thing, with the knowledge we have now, as only a few moments before the contest began a fireworks storage in Enschede (a Dutch city close to the German border) exploded destroying a large part of the city with a lot of people getting killed, permanently maimed and a lot of people got homeless, however Linda and her crew were totally ignorant of the event, as it happened so shortly prior to the ESC began there was no way to notify them in time, so they were notified after the performance. The Dutch broadcast of the ESC was even aborted halfway that year and the Dutch televoters couldn't vote with a professional jury taking their place. When the Dutch crew was notified they already feared they could win, as that would have been a bitter sweet victory, and they were already planning not to perform the song again if it should have won, but to pay a moment of respect, however fear the audience would not be understanding on this was there. Since Linda did underperform a bit (she's vocally a lot better), and the results were unforgiving on that, the problem "solved itself". Linda and her crew also said afterward that if they knew and could still withdraw, they would have, if I recall correctly.
When it comes to Anouk with "Birds", she has become a hero among Dutch ESC fans. A lot of Dutch wanted the Netherlands to permanently withdraw from the ESC due to the bad results the passing years. True, some songs were not really good, but there were also a lot of good ones, and suddenly Anouk came with a performance and a song that is a true piece of art. Although still underrated on the ending results, it did reach the finals and Anouk attracted more of the better Dutch artists to the contest, and Anouk who already had a great career as a singer, did take quite a risk by competing in ESC, but she nailed it and for many Dutch fans, she is the "savior of the Dutch ESC participation". I deem it likely that when she didn't do this, the Netherlands would have withdrawn honorlessly.
The #2 position the year after with "Calm after the Storm" by Ilse de Lange and Waylon, was just the extra boost that brought the Dutch fans back, I tell ya. I guess it was just bad luck that Conchita Wurst performed better than anybody expected.
This makes it hard to imagine the 2015 song performed by Trijntje Oosterhuis was written by... ANOUK... Yeah, I still have trouble to believe that. Trijntje can do so much better than this song allowed her to do. And another dishonerable note. She won the Barbara Dex Award (the prize for the worst dressed ESC contestant) that year.
Yeah, the girls in 2017... O'G3NE... To those who don't know their story. The girls devoted the song to their mother who was gravely ill at the time, and passed away not that long after (which was already inevitable when the girls sang this song).
Well, the only thing about the 2018 entry is... the end result. But there was a lot of misunderstanding on the dancers. When you are not familiar with that dancing style it can look a littlebit ridiculous, but when you do know the style and see how much technique it requires, you'll learn to appreciate it and even to like it, as it is actually pretty cool, but I think this misunderstanding ultimately lead to its underrating. ;(

I wonder if we would have done better...
... when we would have sent Mrs Einstein in 1997 with "toen de aarde stilstond" instead of "niemand heeft nog tijd"
... when we would have sent the Toppers in 2009 with "angel of the night" instead of "shine"
... when we would have sent Rafaella in 2012 with "Chocolatte" instead of Joan Franka with "you and me"
I know that we would NOT have done better when we would have sent Double Date in 1999 instead of Marlayne, but at least we would have been able to share that guilty pleasure with the rest of Europe.

I am so glad that the Dutch broadcasting network quit doing the National song festival, instead of that they seek out the most talented artists at that moment and let them make their own songs so that they will be responsable for their own wins or defeat. It works way better for them then written songs from the national contest with old fasioned writers. That had his downlow at 2000-2012.

Okay the song wasn't the best, but it did amazing in the arena and she was very unlucky to perform in that semi-final(one of the hardest ever). I've never heared of any old Dutch song from back in the 50s, 60s or 70s that I am aware of as a 21st century native dutch person.
And I'm sure I've heared some 80s and 90s Dutch songs, but I sure can't name them.

“Jij en ik” (1982) by Bill van Dijk is underrated imo. Yes, the ‘dancing’ was absolutely silly and Bill’s voice is... mwah a bit harsh. But the song is great. It has a very good melody and the lyrics are lovely. And Ding a Dong (1975) in English is silly too, doesn’t make any sense. There’s a Dutch version here on CZcams, sung by Albert West which is my favorite, the lyrics make sense and the orchestral arrangement is much better imo!

Can’t agree with 1999. It‘s my fav Dutch Eurovision song ever. „Rubs me the right way!“ ;-) One of the melodies you have to love, so sweet and easy to sing along. My other faves are 1998 and 1975. Ding-a-dong is in my top 10 of Eurovision winners and not only Hilda was such a beautiful and charismatic singer.
    Other songs I really love: 1983, 1988, 1990, 1993 and 2013. Not a fan of 2014 though I have to say.
