The Routine: Getting To School With OCD

  • PLEASE READ THIS:
    PLEASE CLICK ON THE LINK below to read some things I had to say about this video, my background, and most importantly OCD! (it was too long to fit here. I put a summary below this as well):
    docs.google.co...
    SUMMARY of description:
    This video was a school project created for psychology class, and everything in it is staged. The purpose of the video is to get rid of some misconceptions about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and provide a new perspective on mental illnesses in general. The video depicts what life might be like for ONE SPECIFIC person with a MILD case of OCD, and what might be going through their mind.
    Note:
    While I have been diagnosed with OCD and used personal experiences and knowledge to make this video, it does not necessarily depict my actual life or exactly what goes on in my head, as the purpose of the video is not to show the world what my life is like.
    Some ideas or misconceptions about OCD:
    • OCD is NOT about being a germophobe or perfectionist, and it’s different for everyone. It about severe anxiety and fear that is totally irrational (knowingly so), which is often (but also often not) followed by repetitive actions to cope with the anxiety.
    • It is normal for anybody to have anxiety, pet-peeves, and obsessive-compulsive tendencies sometimes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have OCD.
    • The obsessions (thoughts/feelings) and compulsions (actions/behaviors) of someone with OCD are very disruptive, disturbing, and sometimes destructive to their lives, and consume a significant amount of time and energy.
    • People with OCD know that what they are doing (or the thoughts they are thinking) are irrational and don’t make any sense, but they can’t help it.
    Additional notes:
    • This video only scratches the surface of what OCD can be like, and is just coming from one perspective. Even for the character in the video, the thoughts you hear are only what’s happening on the surface! It's not just, "oh that really bothers me I'm gonna fix it." It's much deeper anxiety, paranoia, and depression, which is really hard to explain or depict in a school project video.
    • The details of the video, such as the labels not facing the same way, the bedroom being kind of messy, or mismatched socks are not oversights! It shows how OCD doesn’t mean everything has to be perfect!
    • The big punchline at the end shows how people often don’t know when someone is struggling with a mental illness, and it is very easy to make false assumptions about their irregular behavior. It isn’t anyone’s fault for not knowing the background story, so you can’t blame them for making assumptions, but the point is to just always keep your mind open, because you never know what someone else might be going through!

    People keep saying he can't have OCD since his room is messy, but that's the thing people really don't understand. It's not really a controlled or reasonable thing, and he probably has to really choose his battles as he doesn't have very much expendable time after being locked into something for long periods of the day. I, person with diagnosed OCD, have the most horrendous room ever. I can't clean it because it'll never be done in just one day and going to bed at night knowing it won't be done or really even better is extremely disheartening and anxiety inducing. Sometimes I spend 10 minutes touching an object over and over because the first hundred times I touched it felt wrong and I get locked on until it feels right. It's obsessive and compulsive. I don't control what locks me in. It causes me a lot of distress.

      Haleigh Champion I may be judged for my age but I do have a OCD an it's very hard living with it. But I may not have it as bad his him in the video. However I've never been late and never plan do. I've spent 10 mins just flicking up in down videos to make it look perfect.

      I think most people have some form of OCD...like me for instance...I can only use my tooth brush no more than once or twice...then I will buy a new one...I wash my hands often or just use alot of hand sanitizer...sometimes I avoid wearing the color blue...or having anything that's blue... it's not an easy thing to deal with

    • @averychampion6927
      @averychampion6927 Před 7 lety +35

      Lee Lee There's only one form of OCD, severity within a diagnosis may differ by person. Having some obsessive tendencies does not constitute a disorder. OCD is debilitating to me and rules my day if I don't treat it properly. Everybody has quirks and little obsessions, but that I'm and of itself is not OCD. OCD is having near or totally uncontrollable compulsions to do something to the point of it becoming an obsession. Like being incapable of moving on unless you do in all entirety what you are obsessing over. It's not a preference, I don't even really care about a lot of the things I'm compulsed to do and I'm not always compulsed to do what I do care about.

    • @MrsSasukeUchiha
      @MrsSasukeUchiha Před 7 lety +9

      Haleigh Champion hmmm Idk...I really think I have OCD...I will not use my tooth brush again...because to me it's too dirty...so basically I have a new tooth brush everyday...and don't like the color blue...because I think something bad might happen if I wear blue...unless it's my favorite blue shirt...or like bed sheets/blankets...also I always thought OCD was divided in to different categories like...hoarding...brain injury...mental rituals...getting things just right...medicine related etc...

      This video is really great but it doesn't take into account people with different kinds of obsessions and compulsions.. Like some people with OCD aren't disturbed by being tidy but they have thoughts like - "if I step on a crack on the sidewalk I'll die", or "is the door locked?*checks* no but is it actually locked? *checks it again* but is it really really locked?"

People just hear something about O.C.D. and assume that it's true, but half the time it isn't. Watching this video is causing anxiety because of my O.C.D. People at my school don't realize I have it, but it's getting worse so eventually they will realize it.

    I feel like people nowadays think it is cool to have a mental disorder. It really isn't. OCD isn't being a perfectionist. Its being a perfectionist to the point where it disrupts your life. Wanting your pencils to be in a certain way isn't OCD, its called being neat.

      I actually had a scene in this where the character was at school doing work with friends. The character had a paper (or something like that, I don't really remember) next to him that wasn't straight. It didn't phase him, but one of the friends had to stop and fix it, and makes a joke about having OCD. The character just kinda looks at him, and you can tell wants to say something but doesn't. Unfortunately I cut that scene out for time reasons, and also to just focus on one thing.

      Yes, some people with OCD would need to have the deodorant facing the front. A lot of people who don't have OCD would like that, too :) But some OCD sufferers might need it to face another way because of a colour or a word or a symbol, for example. Putting that out of their sight for them means that something bad will not now happen.

    • @backup683
      @backup683 Před 7 lety +26

      Pinja K for some people with OCD it's hard enough to get to sleep and get enough sleep in one night to have the energy to control your OCD and you just think it's simple enough as waking up two hours earlier when anxiety gets worse when you don't get enough sleep. Not only that but some people with OCD have strict bedtime and morning schedules and changing that will cause them so much physical pain (I know from experience). So you're being extremely ignorant making comments like this.

      I switched to shoes that does not require tying up (hidden elastic), and started with a slightly tight one. As the shoes stretched, they became looser and I gradually overcame the need to have the shoes tight.
      But still, every-time I get new shoes that are slightly tight, I feel that comfort of being sure they wont fall off.
      Besides they saves a LOT of time..

After I finished, I had to read the chapter backwards or a family member would die. I had a frightening thought and by reading the chapter backwards I would undo THAT thought. OCD is very time consuming and exhausting. I lived in an apartment and had to wash the outside steps with bleach because they were contaminated. I did it while everyone was at work. I have an extreme case of OCD.

But I can’t stop. There is NO way that I can continue to the next task if I have it in my head that I need to do that SAME one , just once more for the 5 time- even though it probably was the exact same the first time. Honestly I see more people saying (some probably lying) “I have been diagnosed with OCD!” than the people that you are pointing out. But, I do see your point.. it’s actually very sad that some people do not know the difference between having a disorder and being a perfectionist. Same with people falsely calling people things like “gay” and “retarded” when there are actually people that have their whole lives suffering, living in poverty, and even dying because of these things. People need a reality check... 😖😖

The thing is that I know it's completely irrational and that my hands are clean yet I can't stop doing it, it's like something possesses me to do it.

    I have OCD as well and if you manage your time properly you can reduce the times you're late. I suggest organizing the counter items right before bed. Set a timer for each activity to avoid doddling. You can time yourself doing each activity and then total up the minutes to know how much time you need to get ready. Then add an extra 10 minutes to cover error. If you can be fixated on getting things to sit straight you can concentrate on your timing.

Slowly weening myself off of this bullshit. Maybe some of you cunts could try this and it might help? Who fuccing knows, who fuccing cares. Every one with OCD just leave the god damn shit alone and leave the house i promise the urges will fade just like you and the memory of yourself once you're dead and gone, no one will remember you and nothing you ever do matters. I'm usually a perfectionist when it comes to doing creative things.

      Fire Heat Art what you said is exactly the idea I was trying to portray...that what makes it hard for people with OCD is the terrible, irrational thoughts that pop into your head, like something bad happening to you or others, and then the feeling that the only way to alleviate the stress, or prevent these things from happening, is through the compulsive actions and behaviors that you "need" to do. It's what goes on in your head, the irrational stress, that makes it difficult, and I think people don't always realize that

      @markschachter6998  Před 7 lety +20

      My goal was actually to make that exact point... and I felt it was kind of hard to do that in a short school video without getting too deep or too dark, but I figured that what I did was enough to show people who think that OCD is all about being neat that it's actually about the irrational obsessions that cause so much anxiety that you do things you know make no sense and are a waste of time and energy. I think that concept alone is still surprising to some people, and is at least a first step to understanding. Also, a lot of people commented on the messy room and labels facing the wrong way, which hopefully shows that it's not about being neat and perfect. Anyway, I addressed all of this in my updated description, which probably wasn't up yet when you wrote this!

    • @markschachter6998
      @markschachter6998  Před 7 lety +2

      Personally, sometimes I do get to that point and I move on, but when that happens the anxiety is at its highest, and I can be stuck thinking about it for hours. With OCD the anxiety you have when "it's not right" can be paralyzing and that's why people just keep repeating until it's right

    • @dvillagrana15
      @dvillagrana15 Před 7 lety

      Mark Schachter I don't have OCD but I do things repeatedly when I don't feel they're right and I simply can't leave it be or I repeat words or phrases until the sound right or if someone else said it "wrong" then I'll say it too. This is simply an observation, I am aware that OCD is so much worse and I did suffer some kind of obsessive compulsions as a child (washing my hands after touching anything to the point that they started bleeding, making this weird sound at a certain pitch or else I would be very agitated) but again, it wasn't to the extent that I know OCD gets to.

    I used to have OCD like this so bad. It manifested in the form of persisting and repeating thoughts that wouldn't ever stop no matter how irrational I knew they were. Everything in my bedroom was perfectly straight and orderly. If anyone even touched or changed something, I would have a legit meltdown. It lasted to about middle school for me. I didn't know what OCD was at the time, nor did my parents, which made things so much more scary since I didn't know I could possibly be helped. One day I just got so fed up that I snapped and trashed my room, and since then, I haven't had OCD. I don't recommend breaking things to cure yourself, but what I think actually helped me was immersing myself in what I feared, albeit drastically. Of course I'm a rare (and lucky) case since I literally did get fixed in an instant, but the point is still there: all sufferers of OCD have hope. You may need therapy. You may need meds. Whatever the case, you are not trapped

    I do hate that lots of people say that you can’t have OCD if your room is messy or if you don’t clean a lot because that is NOT TRUE. Me as an example is that I have OCD with symmetry and I tend to hoard a lot of things with the fear of throwing them away or putting them out of sight would lead to something bad to happen to me. Because of this I have to have all of these different things that I don’t even use all on my dressers but because of my symmetrical annoyances I have to organize them and make it all fit. But the really bad part is that it makes it impossible to clean my room or even think about getting rid of things even though I don’t use them. And sometimes if I’m walking down stairs but I accidentally jump down and put more pressure on one foot I’ll end up having to stomp on the other foot until they have the same pressure and feel. A lot of people tease me about this but when I’m walking on a sidewalk or even in a store with tiles I can’t step on any cracks or I’ll have to step on it with my other foot. I know it might not be OCD but I do truly feel that it could so if you guys could tell me then thank you (because I can’t get diagnosed)

      NDG Vids maybe you should try to spell better and explain your reasoning?? I'm not trying to be rude I swear. That's a version of OCD I have. You see, it's not as simple as you say. I can't stand it when people are horrible at spelling and grammar. I do understand that sometimes they can't help it, and I don't mind little mistakes here and there. But you can't just cure OCD overnight. It simply doesn't work like that. You have to understand that exposing yourself to new things you aren't accustomed to gives some people extreme anxiety to the point of panic attacks and hyperventilating

People get mad when you say things like this because they dont wanna push themselves. You cannot let your ocd control you. Whenever I saw mushrooms my face went numb, body got itchy, and I overall started to freak out. One time I had a sumo-seizure. In a situation like that you need to have someone around you obviously dont do it if your going to get hurt,you know yourself. However, I kept pushing myself to be around mushrooms, and look at me, I can tolerate mushrooms now. Practice makes perfect.

I can stay days without having to wash my teeth until they bleed for 20 minutes, to tidy everything my sister leaves on the floor, and cleaning the kitchen before i go to school. Then, it comes back. I don't get this extreme anxiety but still I can't think normally in school thinking that i have to get home and get everything done. Sometimes is bad because I'm always late because of that. Also, I hate to have my hands dirty, and my feet. I just can't use shoes whether they are closed or sandals I just have to wash them at least once an hour, this one gets me really anxious because i feel a disgusting sensation in my feet and hands. My mom just says I'm tricky, but It's annoying because you disturb the people around you and they don't understand.

    I used to have OCD when I was very little (around kindergarten and 1st grade). It truly got in the way of everything, I’m not even over exaggerating. I had to touch EVERYTHING an even number amount of times whether that would be 2 times, 4 times, 6 times, and so on. Even if I accidentally touched something, I would HAVE to touch it at least one more time. It was exhausting. I’m extremely grateful that I went to therapy and eventually it went away, but I feel like people don’t understand that OCD isn’t just over obsessively being neat but there is other ways people can suffer with OCD. I hope this helped you understand a little bit more of OCD.

    I have OCD. His toothbrush is touching the countertop and I couldn't use it. By touching the faucet handle his fingers are contaminated. You have to use paper towels to touch the handles or you have to wash your hands again. Before you go to work, you have several levels of hand washing and scrubbing before you are ready to leave. Then, you have to open your front door with a paper towel because the door knob is contaminated and you will contaminate work. You can't touch the door handles of the building entrance at work so you find a way to open them w/o anyone seeing you and not using your bare hands. You get into work and wash your hands the first thing so you don't contaminate the office. Don't even ask about shower routine. Rinse and repeat every day to exhaustion. Everyone at work thinks I am normal and I am.

    I have ADHD, and it gives me the opposite problem. I can never pay attention for long enough to keep any kind of routine going for long. I always end up forgetting about something or zoning out on the way there and wind up somewhere completely different. I have to put extra effort in just to make sure I'm not leaving things behind whenever I exit a room. Stuff like re-arranging everything in my bathroom by size is something I only do when I'm bored and not paying attention to what my hands are doing.
    Anyways, nice vid. This is something that you could probably guess is kind of hard for me to imagine otherwise.

    I'm not diagnosed with OCD , but my parents keep telling me that I'm going to develop having it. I have obsession with washing my hair because i think it's greasy all the time, hence why I wash it on Mondays, Wednesday, and Friday's. If I'm not able to wash it on any of those days, then I'll get extremely anxious about my hair and it interferes with everything else. Same issue with combing it too, i will keep brushing my hair until I think it looks completely tidy, which can take up to 25 mins. I have trouble picking out clothes I need to wear each day too. if i want to wear a particular sweater on a particular day, and i can't find it, then I would waste my time looking for that sweater, regardless of how many other sweaters I own. Also i never wear the same outfit for more than one day during the week, so everyday I have to find a new outfit to wear, making things so difficult. I can't leave my house without brushing my teeth three times. I spend 5 mins just to do my shoelaces. I wake up five in the morning just to make sure I have enough time to get ready, and i still end up coming to school late. And I always have to lie and use the same excuse on my teacher: I woke up late this morning.

      Good for you!! I'm proud! People always think that mental illnesses can't be cured but hey definitely can.

    Something I hate is watching videos and feeling like I want to touch everything I see there, so I'm anxious because I can't, sometimes I pull it back and run my fingers across the screen

    Amazing video, I’ve never personally dealt with OCD and this video has helped me to understand. How something that other people may think is so simple, is actually difficult and frustrating to somebody dealing with OCD and they can’t help it.

    Is ocd kinda when you have that devil on one shoulder and an angel on another?? Cuz I'm having trouble figuring out what I am. I went to the mental hospital and they labeled me as a hypochondriac but this is legit how my fucking day goes. I'll see a certain thing like my blanket and my mind will be like "fix the blanket" but then it'll be like "don't do it you need to live "no just fix it" I don't even know anymore and it's honestly causing me so much fucking anxiety right now someone help.

      Go to your doctor and explain that you suspect you have some OCD symptoms.
      Or if you don't want to go to your doctor yet, go to google. Do some research on different types of OCD and what it's like. You can do a few quizzes but you should keep in mind that an online quiz cannot diagnose you and it may not be accurate but it can give you more of an idea of whether it's likely you have OCD or not.
      Good luck my friend
