- Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who went onto be the first prime minister from the BJP for two terms, spoke to Karan Thapar after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992 about how he wanted to resign as am MP and then from the party’s national executive on “differences over the Ayodhya situation”. Thapar was then executive producer, Eyewitness.

I wouldn't excuse this leader from the Ayodhya incident in 1992 but at least he seems to have courage to face an open interview. Appreciate him for that.
Babri demolition was very much result of Rajiv Gandhi's indifferent leadership. Muslims didn't vote congress because they believed in secular liberal values. They voted congress because they could continue to arm twist government on secular policies. Tolerance of Hindus was taken for granted. Rajiv Gandhi was forced to open Ram temple and perform shilanyas and rest is history
Pakistan has broken 1000+ hindu temple and I am not counting how many have been broken during mughal rule .Hinduo ne ek tod bhi diya for a reason then why so many cru from muslims and lande k liberals .Why they were sailent on Pakistan mandir demolision ? Agar hinduo k ashtha ka samman nahi karoge and anti hindu policy banaoge to aage bhi yahi hoga .Agar kaba ko tod kar church bana diya hota to ,what do u think how long muslims would have waited ? Hindus ne to 550yrs wait kiya hai .Kashi, mathura etc ko dedo santi se warna yahi hoga

Suppress religious fanaticism by all means but do not target the descendants for the wrongdoings of their ancestors.
Be it 1992 or 2023, the only constant thing remains Karan Thapar 's incisive questions!! Another difference is the response. Mr. Modi leaves an interview midway while Mr. Vajpayee looks uncomfortable and becomes defensive!!
Hindus thoughts Muslim will show big heart and will give back Ayodhya, Banaras & Kashi. BUT now they will take it back. I too don't like it as India should focus more on development, hospitals etc not religion

@@sanjaychauhan1116 yhi hoga se kya matlab hai. What the bjp is doing is exploiting the Hindu vote bank in the name of ram . Aur jha tk hone schools mein padha hai that ram is the flag bearer of tolerance and nonviolence. Plus sorry to say but the bjp today (not 1992) neither cares about Muslims nor Hindus nor anyone. @@pt-7890 If a Mosque is coming up then let come, why we should convert it Hospital or School. There are many unused land where others things can come. No Church or Temple must be converted to a Mosque. Muslim rules have done this in past, such as Hagia Sofia which was a Church and now a Mosque. In India, many temples were broken by Muslim rules and Mosques were converted. Kashi, Mathura and Ayodhya are three of them. When Brits came, Hindus requested Brits to convert only these three not others.. but Brit didn't do. How long Hindus will wait?

It's the follow up questions that the politicians are uncomfortable with! Karan has this ability to follow up with more uncomfortable questions to the original question!

I did not support his party in 1992 neither do I support his party today and will never in future. But I can say that Mr. Vajpayee is honorable, honest and respectable Person.
One of the BEST presentation of "The Wire".A Big Salute to Respected Karan Thapar Ji for such a Great Interview.
No doubt, Mr. Atal Bihari Bajpaiji was man of substance. Which Narendra Modi doesn't acquire 1% of his stature. But we never see the changes to Karan Thapper ji. You stand tall throughout your career. A big salute to your honesty and daredevil attitude. ❤❤❤

I admire Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a leader regardless of what people say of him. He was sincere and honest and always spoke his mind. He was never reluctant to stand for what his values were regardless of party, ideology or religious beliefs. Few people have this level of humility and maturity.
Long live the ideas of Vajpayee ji. Such a large hearted person who believed firmly in the value of human labour and debate.

Don't say that loudly in the company of BJP haters.
Can we expect an interview like this in modern India. This absence is called the demise of democratic values in modern times. What is correct or incorrect is debatable but these values should remain to ask questions.
Thanks for sharing the interview & thanks to people who elected such leaders. Leaders who had courage to publically accept their failures. Hope we get to see someone like him soon.
Wow!! Karan Thapar taught me how to rephrase a question. What an interrogator he has been!! Much Respect!!🙏🏻
This is the kind of leaders India is missing today.
This is fantastic! I’m so glad you guys are releasing Karan’s old tapes.

Karan is simply great. He asks questions we are all eager to know the answer to.
What a GREAT POLITICIAN WITH GREAT HUMAN VALUES- STATESMAN LIKE PANDIT NEHRU...WE NEED LEADERS LIKE THEM TODAY ...
He very cleverly tried to prove that the higher decision making body was complete unaware of the mob’s behaviour…
Loved this ! Vajpayee was so eloquent and at ease even in English ....I thought he was a reluctant English speaker and that his articulation was limited to mostly Hindi ...but infact he seems to be quite a natural at bringing correct thoughts to tongue even in English.
Also ...he was so sharp in picking up on the Freudian slip around the end of the interview.
Bjp built by Vajpayee survived and thrived. Bjp built by Modi Shah will die once they are out of power
searching interview indeed !--didn't view earlier, thanks very much for timely flashback !
Hope all the supporters of any party watch this once..about Atal Ji..and take some lessons from him..This is what a true leader was like..😌

The deterioration of the party from this to Modi-Shah is not just astounding but sad to see. How the stature of the politicians have diminished over the years.

Hypocrisy ki nhi seema hoti hai 😅😅
@anandixitin Touché! It is rank hypocrisy to go through the entire charade of the Rathyatra and ensuing episodes of violence, talk of flattening the land for a new construction, and then rue what happened on 6 Dec. The answers reek of sheer hypocrisy and irresponsible crocodile tears. On some accounts he might have been a great man, but that does not absolve him of his sins in this matter.
I don't think mob was in anyone's control. Vajpayee just hoped that violence would be limited to periphery. All political protests tend to go out of control. How many trains were burnt in protest against agniveer!
Then go to Pakistan
When I was a small boy in class 4 I hardly think much about our former PM, he was another old politician and as kids I really never cross my mind what sort of a man he was seeing him on TV. Now comparing to the current BJP lot, he was gold.
What a great man! Are the BJP and especially the RSS listening?
The Acceptance of the Word " Unable to Control the Car Sebaks Was the Failure of the Top Leaders of B J P " in an Open Interview denotes a true Leader's Confessions of Regrets. Bajpayee ji was a Political leader in True Sense. Kolkata.
Gem of a person - Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee - respected & loved by all, remembered with warm fondness even after his demise !

What a great man Atal bihari Vajpai was . A great speaker , intelligent man. Now the hands of BJP is under very wrong prople
Let me rip his pseudo moral veil. He was an epitome of doublespeak. He had no Universal ideals, apart from what he got from the terror group RSS.
1) Vajpayee admitted in Sangh parivar's, Organizer: 'We did pull down the structure in Ayodhya' (7 May 1995)
2) During an election campaign, he claimed that the construction of Rama temple at ayodhya was necessary 'to save the honour of the Hindu community' (The Times of India, 13 May 1991)
3) The compromise of 'honour' was repeated in 1998.
4)On 6 December he said, 'The project for constructing Rama temple in Ayodhya was the expression of nationalist feelings. The work has not yet been completed' (The Hindu, 7 December 2000)
5) Since 1986, Vajpayee had tirelessly claimed that the site belonged to the Hindus and construction of a temple on it would correct a wrong done to them. (Excerpt from The Babri masjid question)
6) On 6 April 1989, he demanded, ' Hand over the site to Hindus for that is the only solution for the Ramjanamabhimi-Babri Masjid dispute in ayodhya.' He said he spoke as a Swayamsevak of RSS and as a Hindu (Indian express, 7 April 1989)
7) On 12 May 1991, he stressed the need for constructing the temple 'to save the honour of the Hindu community and to protect the cultural heritage of the country ' (The Times of India, 13 May 1991)
8) On 5th December 1992, he said, 'The Central government should acquire the disputed structure at ayodhya and hand it over to VHP to construct the Rama temple there. Construction of the Rama temple at the birthplace was to consolidate cultural heritage '
9) On 17 May 1989, he said, ' It was not possible to pin point the exact place where Rama was born thousands of years ago. The temple was built and rebuilt over the age and had existed since emperor vikramaditya's time' (The Hindustan Times, 18 May 1989
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji was the true statesman, his views were democratic and constitutional, but politicians of his party at the present time are undemocratic, unconstitutional, and hatemongers.
What a great man!!! And the interview was nice

Atleast he had guts to give an interview for incident...Whereas the current PM don't even dare to say a word about incident in Manipur...what's surprising is Atalji really belived in the person who would eventually betray his trust. All in All Vajpayee is the kind of leader whom we want who are honest and atleast when something goes wrong, they take responsibility and face people and media and answer them.
He is a real man and a politician.
This kind of man is needed to be a PM. Salute to his bravery
Mr Thapar thsnk u for sharing this old interview, atalji was a statesman, man of principles, talked to opposition whenever it is needed but modi is narrow minded, brutal and uses ED as a tool ro suppress opposition.
Respect to the then PM, he was the one with a clear mindset and accepted the flaws and still managed to answer with courage.... Need more like bajpayee ji who respected the laws unlike what's happening currently.. No one comes to take the blame...those who never accept their mistake, never learns from them...
AB Vajpayee was not the PM in 1992. It was PV Narasimha Rao. Vajpayee was then the leader of the Opposition. He became PM for the first time in 1996.
He was indeed a gentleman, whom critics called the Nehru of the Right Wing. He was sincere, decent and a man of principles. May his soul rest in peace. He is my only personal favourite among all the BJP leaders.
Nation needs a Leader like Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee once again 🙏🙏🙏
A extremely humble and enlightened Leader. We miss him.
The difference of leadership with current one is so stark.
Those times leaders spoke face to face, these days they dog whistle from the pulpit or through monkey bath.
Atal ji simply lied about being sorry for what happened when he himself was no less a party in the events immediately preceding the demolition of the mosque.
He was a great human being to maintain moral ethics.....
Atal ji was only person who was Fit to speak on that critical issue in front of this dangerous journalist.
Great sir ❤
So amazing!
Mr Thapar must be a happy man that he is so adept at interviewing important people that too from various fields.
Vir Sanghi report Ayodya issue on The print was very interesting!
An interview way ahead of its time, especially considering the current flock don't even care or dare to give one to journalists. As much as I admire Mr Vajpayee, looking back it looks like a great political move both for the party and him. Him acknowledging it and statements like saying the party regrets it, well it turned out well for them.
The laugh at 12:14 and the "of course" at 12:35 are clear indications of the confidence and belief the man has in himself. Legend 🙏🙏
What a lovely great personality he was!
Good Interview

The evolution of his party from his time to now can be described as from heaven to hell!! 😢
What a huge difference between Vajpayee a perfect gentleman who sincerely believed in democracy and Modi. The respect that Vajpayee earned will never be there for Modi who is running the country like his personal feifdom and democratic values are being done away with!
Excellent as always Karan
Netas come and go - Karan Thapar is always a legend! Now they just don't have the balls to face him. Respect to Atalji.
The late Vajpayee , the late prime minister of India , by perchance was a claptrap. The plan for demolition of the Babri Mosque had been pte-determined on the wintry night December 1948 itself when the idol of Ram was surreptitiously installed by three extremist sages of Ayodhya. The demolition plan was premeditated and the gruesome polirician Advani vaporized the plan in parallel to Mandal Commission promulgation.
Vajpayee had been a scapegoat which he had proved himself then and there.
1. When ordering to deport from India an English correspondent who had reported in the press that Vajpayee used to ' drink ' every night before to bed.
2. In the same podium where he sat along with Nelson Mandela, the latter when inquired whether he could be a mediator in the Indo - Pak regarding Jammu & Kashmir , in the same podium Vajpayee repudiated openly Mr. Mandela , of his service of mediation unnecessary.
Mr. Vajpayee was just a lozenge in the hands of the Sangh Parivar.
3. Vajpayee tried his hands during his reign as prime minister to crown with Bharat Ratna for Gokwalker and Hegdewar - the Hinutva protagonists , but was thwarted by the Opposition parties. 😅😅😅
Brilliant stuff 👏
Why don't we remember Vajpayee's double speak about Babri Masjid throughout that period? All details are given in the relevant chapter of the book written by Home Secretary, Madhav Godbole Unfinished Innings. There is the truth. Everything else is what politicians say to cover up the truth. Only V P Singh and Lalu Yadav did the right thing on the Mandir Masjid issue. Noone else. Not Rajiv Gandhi or Advani either. This is what history will write. Watch the documentary Ram ke Naam. Didn't this poor country need anything more important to do for its people than THIS to fight over?
People always said one thing about him.. "THE RIGHT MAN IN THE WRONG PARTY"..!! So true..
Vajpayee was a good, honest, straightforward man with good morals unfortunately not present in today's politicians 😮
...One day before the demolition he said in a speech ..."Kal kya ho jay kuch kaha nahi ja sakta"... what does it mean? and now its a failure...HOW?
If you want listened whole interview… Mr. Karan addresses Vajpayee as Advani and loved that reaction from Vajpayee ji… not often you see Mr. Karan offering apologies
