Been living in Sarasota for almost a year now. My wife, son and i moved from NJ in April of 2021 and i love it here. We are in the University area and unfortunately the traffic around this time of year is horrible in this area. But, i still love Sarasota. i just wish we moved many many years ago. 42 years living in cold NJ. You are absolutely correct when you say Sarasota has it all. We rarely ever leave our neighborhood to go shopping everything is right up the road on University Pkwy!

We currently live in Sarasota but are originally from Maryland. Pros very beautiful beaches, great public schools, great weather, great shopping and dining at UTC. Cons: Repeat discrimination in the office workplaces more prevalent because of the lack of big corporate/ big box employers, not as diverse as other Florida cities, have to travel far for big concerts and major celebrity shows.

Its so funny now seeing people finally learn about Sarasota, as its been a long well kept secret of sorts. As a Brooklyn NewYorker born and raised, i always had a love for florida when first vacationing with family in the 80's Disney world orlando of course. So much of Florida was still bring developed even back then. The place was wonderful, but incredibly hot. still it was somewhat manageable over time. years later, in my college years, being very upset and tired of the NY daily grinde going to studying in Pratt, my Professor told me about his colleague down in sarasota teaching out of a small private college called Ringling. I did the research, got some material about the school and learned it was one of the best for my curriculum Computer Animation. The brochure showed it all. The polar opposite of NY. Crystal white powder sand beaches, skies that look like paintings, palm tress all the essence of paradise. so i flew down to see for myself and it was everything portrayed and thensome. more over, it was a nice quite sleepy town.. I transfer from Pratt and by all means made the right life decision. Ringling was awesome, still growing, and so we as students in this all together new field for films and television also helped it grow. Lets just say, it was worth every dime. ANd it was quite a bit of dimes for its time. I lived both on campus and in siesta key. just a skip and a hop from the beach. And as mentioned at that time (the 90's) it was well off the radar for most of america. more over, since sarasota was known to be a place for retirees, mainly those of the war generations. Much of the realestate was on the market and very VERY affordable. but man. if i had the finances then and didnt have to contend with the expense of college. lets just say in the 90's Sarasota was a goldmine. Sure enough over time more and more people discovered the place. and all the cities in the region from Tampa to Clearwater , Saint pete, Bradenton all would see tremendous growth in the decades to come. All those people who claimed to hate florida had no idea of what it truly had to offer. well, now they know. and when people visit, its actually a tradition that they not only stay, but they dont even bother to go back home to bring their stuff down, most simply opt to have their items shipped. I lived for many years in the region, Sarasota, siesta key. clearwater and st pete. loved it all. and miss it as well. I tell you this much. all the things you may not like about south florida. trust me.. you will adapt. your body will adapt. proof of this.. look around and look to see of people besides yourself is sweating like a dog? nope. why not? because your body adapts to the heat and humidity over time. the one great things about the costal cities, the temperature is much better than the interior.

“…Crystal white powder sand beaches, skies that look like paintings….” Your words are beautiful. Permission me to use them sometime. Thank you so much! Thank you for telling your story about living in Sarasota in the 90s. And you are absolutely right, the real estate was more affordable then. And Ringling, your college is still standing strong and doing wonderful things! Why don’t you come? Would you? Come back “home”? 😁😁Thank you for taking the time to write such a nice response. Hope to hear from you again.

@@homesbymillicent Oh for sure, go rite ahead, i miss the old stomping grounds. even when i lived in clearwater i often took the drive down just to hang out, I left florida in 08, and in that time seen the transition. heck as mentioned the transition started even when i was living their in the mid 90's. before the housing market boon. Ringling has grown dramatically since i was their. still a small school overall but back then it was even smaller lol. i was the only black guy of my graduating class, one of only 4 in the school and the only black guy living on siesta key in his own condo lol, but i had no issues with that. And most people then didnt as well. My only misgivings in regards to the recent change is from all those that have moved in. The snobbery was not such a thing back then. back then it was old money, and their was no need for such petty behavior, But those who have come in, have brought with them an aire about them. and that's tainted the place. Their was indeed once a racial divide, even the standard train tracks that divide the classes and racial zones. but even then, people kinda worked around the old standards. though its true, i personally traversed places many local blacks wouldnt typically go. as a newyorker i didnt carry that history with me. And what i found was people most, really didnt care. anyways. enjoy. represent well. its a wonderful place. There is even quite the growing island community down in Ft Myers.

@@homesbymillicent Yes i would imagine, its that shock of change. with more people coming usually means many luxuries become at risk. The cost of living usually inflates. And ironically although Sarasota is very much viewed as luxury living, its people live very much fixed budget fixed income. And the amount of inflation that these new people are running from in their past residency states, usually follows them. Greed follows the people in every regard, especially realestate. And that makes it extremely hard for native longstanding residents. No doubt look what's happened to Brooklyn! I t was once a borough where cabs from Manhattan would never cross the bridges into. But today!? much of Brooklyn is now just an extension of Manhattan. and so came with it the inflated costs of living. It was bound to happen, but at the cost of its native residents who were pushed out financially and physically. Guess its just a factor of time. all good things are faced with change.

Every Route I know is under construction and people here drive like crazy. Old people with poor eye sight are always driving really slow and young people driving reckless. I moved from the Midwest and the driving is completely different. Also a lot of people are moving to Sarasota and they are more cars on the road that before. This makes a 20 minute drive last an hour. I have see countless traffic accidents and people running over bicyclist. This is one of the reason I left a job because I took me ages to get back home. Times is priceless and I do not wish to expend it in a traffic jam.

Of all the issues to consider about moving here or not, I think the alligators and bugs should be at the bottom of the list. They don’t affect the quality of life in any way. They live in their habitats and mind their business and you do yours. They don’t have any bearing on the day to day lives of people. Like I said, this is my personal opinion.

Thankyou Millicent for your video and while I agree with much of what you said there are some things I do not. One, and importantly our healthcare is not as good as it used to be. In recent years many of the top doctors and nursing staff have moved to other states for better conditions and pay, and even allowing for the increase in population, the shortage is now telling. Secondly, we do not have the worlds most beautiful beaches as anyone who has travelled around the world can tell you, we have pretty white sand but the surroundings are dreadful, looking back from the beaches all you can see are ugly grey concrete buildings that look like prison cell blocks and little to no lush vegetation to help conceal them.
It would appear that there are also now a number of people leaving the area for a variety of reasons. Many visit Sarasota and Florida only in the winter and think of how lovely the weather is but do not appreciate how oppressive the heat and the threat of severe weather can be in the summer and hurricane season.
I have been in Florida for over 30 years in different locations and here since 2004 and have seen people come and go for a variety of different reasons, I have gone through 3 hurricanes and it is not fun. For those that wish to evacuate before the next hurricane my advice is to do it very early, there are only two major routes out of Florida and several days before a hurricane hits the roads will be packed and you may get caught with no where to go.

I moved from MN to FL 9 months ago and regretted it from around week 1! You're absolutely right about the jobs! Still paying adults 10-11 measly bucks an hour? To do hard labor? Wtf!!?
The hot weather is sweltering.. The water bill will go up bcz you'd need multiple showers a day if you're out there.
The traffic, insane rude drivers, the ppl here are rude too. Car insurance will almost triple what you'd pay in most of the country. Car registration? They will take all your money for that. No car insurance is reported and you'll get a letter that your driving privileges are revoked until an insurance company provides the state proof. The lines to get your DL or ID is wrapped around the corner everywhere. If you need food stamps or medical etc from the state, prepare to wait MONTHS before your case is done. The hold times are from an hour to a day, literally, you can hold up to 8 hours of more and they'll call you the next day maybe, with no answers.
Florida needs slaves to work the jobs. The pay is barely enough for a teenager let alone an adult with bills.
The news everyday reports either traffic accidents or alligator/snake fatalities. A woman was hanging out at the pond and was killed by 2 alligators and another man was too but survived with really bad results. He needed many surgeries.
      Did I mention traffic🤦🤦🤦😭
Beaches are hard to enjoy with the heat of an oven on your face for hours. Praying for clouds or just can't take it and leave. No cool crisp mornings, muggy, stuffy bug 🐛 filled mornings. I've already started packing up and long for the day I get outta here!! Poor unsuspecting folks. Florida markets itself with pictures of 🌴🌞 and beaches, it's ALL MARKET!
And most of the jobs go to the Spanish speakers. They work together to give jobs to each other FIRST. One chic even told me that on my interview that ppl are getting old and she will be giving jobs to "her" ppl. That's the mindset here.
Be careful if deciding to move to FL. I'd NEVER suggest or recommended it. Visit? Maybe and GET OUT!

This committee would use these funds to replace trees cut or lost to storms. But, I don't think you can avoid cutting trees. @@pattrell5257 County rules are not against cutting all trees, and not all trees need a permit to be cut down. As far as I know, it is only the oak trees and aquatic mangroves that are regulated. And even the oak trees can be cut down. You just need to make a good case, and you will get your permit. Fair?:-)

Don't you dare cut down a tree in Florida. They have an arborist union and you will soon regret cutting down any tree even on your property. If you choose to not heed the warning have deep pockets.

Its WAY too expensive .. Now .. I say now cause new builders have started building in my area of 20 years ...raised my kids here .. These homes are WAY too much for this area .. They want 1mill . lmao .. We are working class people ...nurses , fire fighters , hospitality ... Leave us alone ! Take your big tacky over priced homes the other side of 41 .. Quit pushing people out of their homes .. My kids cant even live close to me now and they are educated ! Get lost !
