The Fantaisie-impromptu is part of the triumphant recital Cyprien Katsaris gave on 17 October 1999 in the fabulous surroundings of the main auditorium of Carnegie Hall in New York on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Chopin’s death. Katsaris presents us with anything but a routine reading of Chopin’s work. His approach is highly personal: unexpected counter-tones in his turn of phrase, tempi that are often unusual, breaks and contrasts informing dynamics, articulation and pedal work. The New York audience was manifestly electrified, giving a standing ovation, repeatedly calling the pianist back for several minutes and finally wresting from him three encores.

Cyprien Katsaris is one of the greatest virtuosos of modern times. His understanding of music, technique and sensitivity are unmatched.
I totally agree!
Yes he is...even Cziffra was impressed by his technique.
How did 10% of people give thumbs down? He played Chopin how he is to be played...? And bringing out all of the inner melodies. He gets A+ across the board from me: playing, transcribing, teaching/masterclass, views on music and competition, etc. Katsaris is the most underappreciated classical pianist out there.
He plays great, no question. But it’s not a Chopin how it should be played. He plays it a lot too fast. Since Chopin added no specification of tempo to this piece, only “allegro agitato” it’s clear that he didn’t intend it to be that fast. Allegro is at around 120 bpm, and agitato means “busy” or “emotional”. He plays it at around 200 bpm. Of course when playing Chopin (or others from that time) you have some freedom, but not that much. He plays it so fast because that’s what every professional piano player tries when playing this piece: to be the fastest. They make a competition out of it and that’s clearly not what Chopin wanted.
TwelfthRoot2 yep! He plays with rubato and feeling, and just everything that Chopin wanted!
@@JohnDoe-zo2ww allegro can be waaay faster than 120bpm. Allegro agitato is even faster of course. And he's nowhere near 200 lol
Instead of complaining about speed, how about you notice all the thoughts he put into the interpretation : the "agitato" feeling in his phrasing, never played the same passage twice the same way, incredible and logical dynamics and pedaling.
The extra middle voice it the last part was a bit too much for me though, but it is interesting.
There's so many positive aspects in this performance we could discuss, but you only talk about the one problem that's not even a real problem xD
@@MattPark75 What a dumb comment. There is nothing romantic about this ''interpretation''. Fantaisie impromptu is my favorite piece and this was sh**t performance, I like to play it relatively fast too but this trash ''interpretation'' is basically speeding up on parts where it should be slower and more poetic. Just pure garbage performance of this piece tbh
@@lukas4132 if Fantasie Impromptu is your favorite piece, then you need to listen to more music dude . Listening to only one piece of music over and over doesn't make you an expert , it just means your brain can't take too much information , just like how you can't take this interpretation of music .
Maybe one of the best Chopin interpreters in the world...
I always love seeing a musician play from the heart and that is what is happening here. Beautiful rendition and wonderful expressions that show how much he is feeling the music as he plays it.
Fantastic playing and expression!
Fantastic!
He plays like an angel....
And it is none of your buissines
Love how he leans into the rubato and really enjoys the second section of the piece. I find its often neglected
Interesting... he's the only person so far I've heard to actually play the recap Presto as marked in contrast to the allegro agitato indication at the start.
1番好きなショパン弾き!
So elegant! This is the best interpretation of Fantaisie impromptu I've heard!
Amazing playing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is absolutely breathtaking! He's among my absolute favorite pianists
Absolutely perfect, an incredible sensitivity like few others, I love this pianist.
This is exactly how chopin wants that piece. Katsaris adds beautiful variations in melody and tone
He is magical!!!
Love you, Maestro. Thank you ♥️
PERFECT!
wonderful
Piękno muzyki Fryderyka Chopina to fenomen graniczący z cudem. Wspaniałe wykonanie, bardzo dziękuję.
Thanks!
Perfect!!!!!!
Cyprien kastaris is far better than others
As perfect as u can get
Chopins great grandson
Musicien hors du commun !
Quelle main gauche extraordinaire !
This guy basically packed a lot of variations into the fantaisie.
3:14~Insane
but not in a good way. I bet Chopin never played this piece that fast.
@@MatthiasUrlichs Yes.
@@MatthiasUrlichs the music sheets always indicate that should be played presto while the prior variations were adagio so it should be played faster

Cyprian 1 - 0 Yundi
THE BEST INTERPRETATION EVER!
Yundi Li's version is good. Please also check the Cziffra's version, which is better.
They're both good
❤️
Chopin would be really proud of him performing his scores like a boss...
bien
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A bit fast in my opinion. Still very well played.
You need to be respectfull while living comrnt am i right cyprien katsaris?
0:41 mistake
Nopehe hit the high B, just softly.
@@jrexx2841 still a mistake. At this level.
@@infectedlobe Not a mistake, but an interpretation
That’s not a mistake lol
@@infectedlobe no it’s not a mistake
Ob oberhalb, oder unterhalb sollte jeder für sich selbst herausfinden. Betrachten Sie dazu auch Gesa Maria Drozdzewski auf youtube.
You need to be respect full whole living coments am i right?
You need to be gentle in the comemts and npt be rude
why is he pressing three keys at first?
コントロールベア I think it’s the last chord of the previous piece he played
almost world best.....maybe.......
but, below tamas vasary's
Mister Bean ? 😆
Its too much, but nice
Lots of wrong notes in the left hand during the recapitulation
Cornell Overbeeke, MD lol, you don’t even know the music, how arrogant. He is just playing “en dehors” the middle voice. How they say... the less you know, the more you speak.
Fernando Serico you seem to speak a lot.
Cornell Overbeeke, MD cute defense
Those “wrong” sounding notes actually come from the right hand, F double sharp
Some mistakes

@@SpontaneityJD He's in his own world💫
@@jrexx2841 Indeed. 3 years ago, time flies..
And yes, I do recall writing this comment. I geniunely wanted to know where this gentleman thinks mistakes were made. And if he even understands what a mistake means. I doubt he does, or has any significant musical training.
@@SpontaneityJD Haven't noticed your comment was 3 years ago lmao. I think by mistake he meant interpretation maybe he didn't the interpretation.
Играет хорошо, но морда просит кирпича!
As a listener/ audience, It appears to be a tad bit fast, to an extent that rob's away the beauty and comprehension of this great song. I don't understand what his rush is. Piano songs/ interpretations sound best when the dynamics/ tempo sound appropriate to be enjoyed by the audience. A small mistake and you are making space for complaints. You are playing to please the crowd, not yourself. No matter how great a pianist may be, this is something that he/she needs to understand.
A song?
@@frankromano9064song/ interpretation/rendition/ emulation whatever you call it
This is not too fast
@@ghostrider8307 it’s a piece
@@ghostrider8307 lol imagine criticizing one of the greatest living pianists because you don't like the tempo.
shallow & not worth to listen to.
lol
couldn't disagree more.
