Artist : The Temptations Title : Papa was a rolling stone Album : All Directions Year : 1972 Label : Warwick, Miracle, Gordy, Motown, Atlantic, New Door/Universal familybeats.org
My grandfather is/was one of the violins in the intro. He’s on several Motown tracks and played 46 years in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He died in May, and when we miss him we listen to music. ❤️ 😭
My father was murdered 8 years ago yesterday in Detroit. This was his favorite song... yesterday was the third of September and that was the day that my daddy died. I miss you pop..rest easy
I'm an old lady and loved this song back in the day, appreciate it even more now. I agree that this arrangement is brilliant, epic, awesome, superb, sublime. If aliens ever intercept it in outer space it may be the only thing that keeps them from blasting us out of the universe. They'll be like, "If they're capable of this, we can't kill them."
Rest in Power, Barrett Strong. He co-wrote this classic with Norman Whitfield. Barrett died today (Jan. 29, 2023); Norman passed away in 2008. @@jeffreybarkin3177 Hi, Jeffrey. Thanks for your message. Yes, Barrett Strong was indeed a genius. Yeah, the media isn't usually great with this kind of thing, as you know. I was thankful that the Grammy Awards ceremony (during its "in memoriam" segment), posted an image of Barrett, including saying he was a Motown singer and songwriter. The Recording Academy also thankfully included Thom Bell, Lamont Dozier, Anita Pointer, and others associated with soul, R&B, and pop...though personally, I feel that they could have devoted entire segments of time to each of those individually. If you didn't catch the 2023 Grammys, there was also a segment in which they honored the very much alive Smokey and Berry, featuring Stevie and some young men singing "The Way You Do the Things You Do," "The Tears of a Clown" (Smokey chiming in for that Smokey-Stevie tune, a No. 1 Miracles tune), and then Stevie doing "Higher Ground" with the decent country star Chris Stapleton. Anyway, I write all that because I was thinking about another Motown legend, too, i.e., Barrett. (Regarding the Grammys, I don't love all of it, but I tune in for tributes.)
Superstar by the Temptations is another good one. Smiling Faces (Sometimes) from the same year. Basically anything Norman Whitfield put out in 1971-72. He was on fire.

Only over the last year, ages 73-78, have I truly appreciated the instrumental beginning of this song--noticing it years earlier, but not truly appreciating it. It's genius
Who but the Temptations would be willing to invest nearly 40% of a song's total length to something as subtle and well-crafted as this? They created a musical masterpiece by slowly but steadily building up the listener's tension and a growing sense of uneasiness. Magnificent! Truly a masterpiece, and certainly one of the greatest recordings ever produced! You have to hand it to them...they really knew how to get a listener all shook up!♥️
@@malikataylor3478 Thank you very much, Malika. I may not be the most sensitive or self-aware person in the world, but I still feel the steadily growing tension over that brilliant introduction. Then, after bringing us almost to the edge of our seats, voila...the great reveal! I can still remember the first time I ever heard this song, and how I felt at the almost unearthly slow build-up of tension. The music was ever so slightly creepy, almost jarring, and just kept building that sense of something ominous just around the next corner. Then the vocals cut in, and you finally learn why! A brilliant composition, all to convey all the sense of suffering and emotional blight that this kind of "parent" leaves in their wake. As a musician myself, I must tip my hat to these musical geniuses!
I did! I’m not willing to give up on old qualities of being patient and not rushing to the next thing all the time! We can learn a lot from that prior generation.
60yr old dude here, every molecule of that song is pure genius. It tells an extremely painful story that can be heard in the leads voice. My old man was a womanizing filanderer too and this masterpiece totally illustrates the devastation a man causes when he doesn't live up to his responsibilities. The line "all he left us was alone" is probably the most potent lyric I have ever heard in a piece of music. I absolutely love it, but shed a tear every time I listen to it!
Real strings, real horns, a real introduction. Virtuoso vocals and harmony. A song that tells a story. A musical, soul masterpiece. The Temptations, the Four Tops, the Isley Brothers, Marvin, Aretha, . . .I miss them.
Context: The intro instrumental for "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" is literally 4 minutes long. Imagine listening to more than an entire song's worth of instrumental music BEFORE the first verse.
This is one of those songs that when you hear the first couple of notes on the car radio you turn up the volume and start that deep shoulder action while driving!!! Love it!!!
Never knew my father- he walked out on my mother when she was pregnant with me, along with my then four-year old sister, who later told me she literally watched him walk out forever. This was in late 1957. Whenever the 60+ years of rage, emptiness and shame feels like it's about to overwhelm me, I listen to this all-time masterpiece- it does more for me than the 40+ years of therapy I've been through....
My heart goes out to you, I'm going on 66 come July 2022. My mom was pregnant with my (7 yrs) older half brother in Canada of all places & her POS first husband walked out on her leaving her alone & broke along with her pregnancy. My brother still uses the guys last name even though never meeting or hearing from the dude again! Fortunately for her, grandpa went & got em' both, truthfully, I don't think my dad treated her much better, although he did claim his rights to visit me by paying some child support, but her luck with men wasn't there that I ever saw & she was extremely attractive ( sometimes that can be a setback in relationships) but it took me a number of years before I understood why she made absolutely sure, that I knew how to treat a woman with respect & courtesy always, no matter what, opening car doors, I still do it & have in my relationships all of the time, not just while dating, and everything else that came along, lighting a cigarette for them, table manners, the works! She was not going to send me out into the world treating women like crap, the way it always worked out for her. She died at the age of 54 in pain & penny less thanks to the last & top of the heap when it came to worthless ass wipes, they say you shouldn't hold grudges but if I could go back and knew the added lies he put out there, I'd have killed him twice just for being what he was & the things he did, well, killed him one time, then run over him a few times just because! I imagine life hasn't been what you wanted it to be, I fucked mine up enough to last a while & a few times have wished it was done, tried once but it comes & goes, like the stuff in our heads, some days chicken, some days chicken shit. I know about depression all too well also, unlike you, I have never really said anything other than what they wanted to hear to keep me from being put under a microscope. And I have a trade I'm pretty good at (concrete) & that has been a huge part of keeping my head pointed in sort of the right direction. I'm serious when I say that I know some of your pain brother, I hope you're doing better. And it may not be the same for me, but this time does hit home & it brings back memories of in my opinion, the best Motown group ever & say group because James Brown was only one man, but damn, NEVER be another one like him either! ✌️
+PAV Lindenberg Yes Indeed it will always be a top ten, and longest as well. And it was a true story back then and still is today. Yes my Papa was a rolling stone.
My god, the intro to this song....gets me every single time. STRAIGHT outta the 70's. Not that I would know...being in my late 20's. But still. My parents generation had the jams. I swear they had the best music I have ever heard. Nothing like this garbage that plays on the radio now. I'll take the Temptations, The Spinners, Blue Magic, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Parliament....all of the old tunes over the crap being produced now ANY DAY. Love this song.
+heywaitMarlee Still gets me, too - and I've been listening to it since it first came out - had my kids listening to it, too, and they're in their 50's now! Sounds, to me, like you've got a good well tuned ear for great music.
In honor of my father who passed away 34 years ago today. I play this every year on the anniversary of his death at 47, way too young. Love you Dad, until we meet again 😘
I'm 64 years old. Man I grew up in Alabama in the 50s and 60s. Listening to music by folks different colored than yourself wasn't looked upon with favor. I didn't give a "Cool Jerk" what they thought, I loved the music. Still do. God bless Motown! It was uplifting music fringed with bright lasting hope. I went to Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, Alabama back in the late 60s to see The Temps. There lots of other white kids there as well. It was terrific, and I'll never forget it.
+Lamar Coffey Thanks very much just for listening and defying those people. As a black man, you have no idea how much it means to me, to hear about someone defying them, especially from Alabama, which I'm sure you know, didn't have a great reputation. You, are brave and amazing and just a massive thank you for standing up to them. You didn't need to, it probably would have been safer if you didn't but you did and that's amazing. Thank you so much. :)
My father died 3 years ago....miss him everday since and think of him every day...But don't forget what it means when your father dies.....It means you gotta take his place in beeing excelent, decent, kind, a fighter and a worker, a leader and friend...It's our responsibility now...we can make them proud.
+GTOAviator Music will heal your soul and i love all music except thrash metal lol but my favourite Northern Soul tune has to be THE NIGHT by frankie valley and the four seasons!! i am a sucker for blues music but i mostly listen to reggae and roots dubs and steppa tunes :) checkout ABA SHANTI and you will see what i mean, i also collect vinyl and if you love your music then get into buying vinyls and get a proper good set up and trust me you cant beat the sound of a record!! peace and light dude,,,
These days music is helped too much by electronics. I miss the background singers who actually were often the stars of the songs. I could cite many examples.
Shout out to my uncle Melvin Ragin aka Wah Wah Watson! He played the Wah Wah Guitar on this record!!!!! Unc also played on Let’s Get It On, Car Wash, Urban Hang Suite for Maxwell and other countless records!!!!!!! We love you Unc and miss you but you left yo DNA for all of us to enjoy and learn!!!! The true session GOAT!!!!!
This song is pure genius. It captures the talent, complexity of musical and vocal arrangement. It makes you feel you're living that era. Young artists should take a lesson from these masters. These cats were as cool as ice! I'm digging it man!
THE TEMPS WERE UNTOUCHABLE, ONE OF A KIND!!! THEY WERE THE GREATEST EVER!!!! I MEAN THE ORIGINAL TEMPS, NOBODY COULD SANG THAT TENOR NOTE LIKE EDDIE KENDRICKS..YOU HEARD ME?????
Saw The Temps and 4 Tops one night on the same bill. It was awesome with over 15,000+ people in the audience ... I've never seen so many standing ovations in my life ... all very well earned .... :) Needless to say the orchestra was GREAT also !!!!!!!!!!! Roger C.
There's so much going on in this song, but there's a reason most songs are around 3 minutes long. Most groups aren't able to spin that many plates for nearly 12 minutes. This song is incredible. I know that bass player had to be bored, but if he isn't a machine with that steady rhythm the piece falls apart. His concentration is amazing. Almost every time I play this song I turn around and play it again.
i'm *almost* 30... and it is *great*... *first time listening* **good stuff** :D (in a hurry or I'd write something more articulate, got a Christmas party)
instead of mentioning that you had to hurry up and go to a christmas party couldnt you have used that same amount of words to articulate yourself better?
The Temptations were in a class by themselves...this song set them apart from any group during their era....their music, especially this gemstone was 3 fold in nature... It commented on the social environment and dealings of their day...laid out the music with harmony, grit and cool smooth...and delivered EVERYTIME!! They will forever be one of my all time favorites!!
Love the menacing sound of the bass ~ that sense of anticipation ~ @ 2.50 the momentum is building - then the story begins "Papa was a rolling Stone....." This song is so cool ~ love love it !!!

Haven't listened to this is in God knows how long but this track absolutely kicks ass. My generation (gen z) just doesn't see soulful music like this anymore. Amazing
Thank God for Motown, & the incredible artists it supported! They brought the "Black" sound to the fore, giving the majority of white America their 1st real exposure to soul, the blues, & jazz, to name a few genres. This has always been 1 of my fave songs from the Temps, & any time it played on the radio, I'd turn the volume up to "11". Really, an exceptional song!
Wow. Best long intro for a funky song. Loved this song since I was six and had to wait in the car while my sister went to the doctor. This came on the radio, and my tiny 6 year old brain was shattered and funked, forever.
right on man. my mom listened to a whole lotta motown as i came up. i still love all this .i have thanked her more than once for turning me onto this music at an early age.
Charles & Danny, I did it to my kids and they're in their 50's now. My daughter even had Isaac Hayes singing Shaft as her and her hubby's entrance song at their wedding. We've got to keep this funk going on.
Great song! One of the all time best intros to a song! All the different instruments, and clapping leading up to the vocals..... The fidelity, richness, soul, and separation of them all. I use this song to check out new speakers, and ear buds to make sure they are worth buying. Magnifique!!!😎

Then the vocals cut in, and you finally learn why! A brilliant composition, all to convey all the sense of suffering and emotional blight that this kind of "parent" leaves in their wake.
As a musician myself, I must tip my hat to these musical geniuses!
Shout outs to Norman Whitfield, Paul Riser and Wah Wah Watson, plus Bob Babbitt on bass.
Classical musicians, Isaac Hayes, lotsa people really. I mean, this is a masterpiece, i'm just saying.
Such an amazing musical entro to a
Beautiful song by an amazing group!!!
One of the best bass lines in history
Let me guess, you play bass.

The Netherlands, Almere, 13 februari 2024. Ik ben 70 en luister wekelijks Motown muziek uit de jaren 60-70-80……..
Doe je goed.....😊

+Mischtchratzer We sure are! :)

Who here sat and listen to all 11 minutes and 51 seconds? ✋🏻 I did
So did I!
Yes sir
Wouldn't listen to it any other way. It's "All or nothing at all" ,!!
I did! I’m not willing to give up on old qualities of being patient and not rushing to the next thing all the time! We can learn a lot from that prior generation.
....
The story of the lyrics to this song still rings true in this fallen world. Single parent households are a devil.
9.9K thumbs down?..... What????? This was, is, and always will be a Masterpiece!
FUCK the haters!!
Along with the Greats,,,, Lotta assholes in this world too.
There’s no dislikes now :)
Absolutely
Yes yes sir
Real strings, real horns, a real introduction. Virtuoso vocals and harmony. A song that tells a story. A musical, soul masterpiece. The Temptations, the Four Tops, the Isley Brothers, Marvin, Aretha, . . .I miss them.

Totally agree. Fantastic !

So true! I don’t think we will ever hear the caliber of music that was created back in the day. It was so WONDERFUL!

Thanks for giving me my culture pops
Context: The intro instrumental for "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" is literally 4 minutes long.
Imagine listening to more than an entire song's worth of instrumental music BEFORE the first verse.
This is one of those songs that when you hear the first couple of notes on the car radio you turn up the volume and start that deep shoulder action while driving!!! Love it!!!
Shoulder action haaaa
Cruising music that makes all white men feel black... Lol

I will be your brother, father and anyone else that your precious little heart desires....⚘
David Whitney Keep healing man!
@@coreyrinehart5734 you're a kind great man. Wow
He ddn walk out on her life with women get to real for even a man to handle
When music was real
This song for me has been considered the best song ever written and sung
One of the TOP songs ever. Who agree???
+PAV Lindenberg Yes Indeed it will always be a top ten, and longest as well. And it was a true story back then and still is today. Yes my Papa was a rolling stone.
No, sadly. But it's definitely in my top 200. There are so many great songs, you know.
+PAV Lindenberg agree
My god, the intro to this song....gets me every single time. STRAIGHT outta the 70's. Not that I would know...being in my late 20's. But still. My parents generation had the jams. I swear they had the best music I have ever heard. Nothing like this garbage that plays on the radio now. I'll take the Temptations, The Spinners, Blue Magic, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Parliament....all of the old tunes over the crap being produced now ANY DAY. Love this song.
+heywaitMarlee Still gets me, too - and I've been listening to it since it first came out - had my kids listening to it,
too, and they're in their 50's now! Sounds, to me, like you've got a good well tuned ear for great music.
3:36 this violin riff gets me every time ❤️
Maaan….you can totally hear all the native, old blues and Appalachian (think clogging on the porch) influences that people just skip over…incredible!

+Lamar Coffey Did a lot of whites hold off from letting folks know they were listening to black music?
+Lamar Coffey top!
+Lamar Coffey Proper
+Lamar Coffey ,You go with your soul and groove with the music. That's what we do up here in Cincinnati. All from the heart!
By daddy passed on 9/3/19. Definitely was no rolling stone but of course I think of him whenever I here this song.

This is more than just a masterpiece of music, it is a work of art.

A Big Thanks to Norman Whitfield and
Barrett Strong for writing all those great songs for Motown and the Temps and many others.
The arrangement is genius.
So boring for the bass player though ;-) lol
Yeah but it very good if you are playing to this track because he gives you that very base line so you can play around with your bass ;)
True! =D
Whitfield deserves a lot of credit for this and the whole psychedelic soul sound. Don't think the Tempts we too enthusiastic about the new direction.
True!
People whose last names don't exist yet will listen to this on other worlds.

THIS is one of the all time great recordings. Period.
Father's Day anthem 🥂
Legend has it, the intro is still on going to this day 😂.
Papa was a rolling stone came out when I was a teen , I'm 61 now and I still jam it
i'm *almost* 30... and it is *great*... *first time listening* **good stuff** :D (in a hurry or I'd write something more articulate, got a Christmas party)
