Never set your iron flat on the ground, here's why!

- How does your iron golf club sit on the ground at address? Many golfers set the soul of the golf club flat on the ground, but that is not correct. If you put the club flat on the ground, the club may close because the toe hits the ground and not the heel. Tom explains why it is better to set the iron golf club a bit on its heel.

I’ll put that on the list of 50 things I’m supposed to do before I swing
Lol 😂
😂😂😂😂😂
And don't you dare forget to do it!
What!! Only 50? 😁
Lol
Golf clubs need a warning sticker: "Do not use as you would expect."
😂👌
Or something like: If you care even a little bit of your mental health, stay away of these bad boys.
Robin Williams sketch on golf never dies.
@@johnzabroski5396😂 I had to look it up! Money!
I’ve been golfing twenty years and I’ve never heard this tip before lol. I don’t even know how I address the ball now. Total mindf*ck. Heading to the garage to check 😂
Edit: I do this naturally. Now I’ll just have to think about it first instead of just hitting.
I now spend 10 minutes, explaining to myself what I need to do before moving my club!
Great advice!
that bit at the end about the club head opening up as it makes contact really helped it click with me
Same!
That is not because of the lie.? There are only 4 main thing that can have that effect.
1. the shaft spine alignment is vertical or incorrect.
2. Shaft is to weak for your swing speed.
3. your your body rotation is quicker than your arms.
4. your gripping the club to tight, and your hand will not release.
you've fixed my iron game appreciate it.
Here in the US, we don’t have a $2 coin. I guess I’ll never learn 😢
You can order 2 euro "golf coins" from me - at 20 USD+postage/coin it's a bargain!
That exchange rate is wrong. Just put down 2 dollars 16 cents in a small pile and it should work exactly the same
@@JeansWebbTv I played 20 years golf and never learned until I tried JeanWebb`s offer. Now I have zero handicap. Next year I will try to make it to PGA tour.
Just use a $2 bill, it'll be fine.
Bidenomics has ruined the game of golf!
I was doing this for 5 years hahaha just last year I learned this! Makes a big difference!
Great to hear. I have this problem.
I would thin it everytime - dumbest thing I’ve seen on the internet
I do this. I've been playing 1 year and i'd say 75% of my shots end up drifting to the right so it's all making sense. Thanks for the tip
Same
Just wanna add that I tried this tip and it was very Affective! Effective?? ... It worked!
It's good advice .
There's also grip, path, bottom, lag, wrist, etc. :-D
@@Gregroybiz Effective.
Went to the driving range yesterday and a lot of my shots went off to the side. Gonna have to try to adjust my club angle based on this video. Thanks!
I literally just started setting my club down more on the heel, with the ball slightly on the inside of the face instead of center, and I cannot believe how much more consistent and solid i’m hitting it. I’m about a 8-10 handicap
Well done!
I have 6 in handicap and I don't buy what this clown is saying one bit, those are irons and he uses a fucking ultra flex shaft to prove his point.
There is almost no flex in iron shafts even if you're kyle berkshire. It shouldn't even matter how you let the club sit on the ground, it's how you move the head through the swing.
A 1000x times better way to become good at golf is mastering fade and draw so you can really control your distances, since a draw is about 2clubs longer than a fade with the same club. Most irrelevant golf tip I've seen in my life, may work for some but for the wrong reasons.
i would try the same thing today. Thanks
Remember people, even though he’s correct, this is not correct for everyone.
HOW TO USE LIE ANGLE:
1-Toe down at impact pushes the ball right and toe up pulls to the left.
2-create a repeatable shot shape and adjust the lie to create the desired flight.
3- flat at impact isn’t correct , it’s just neutral.
4-every pro uses lie angle to create the flight needed.
Example- I draw the ball. My lie is 1deg flat so I miss straight and not left.
You are all welcome.
I think most would disagree with this. The club is designed to hit flat but with forward shaft lean. Hitting the heel or toe first will cause bad results. Pros alter their swing path to create shape
@@NG-tz8wo you do realize that when the club hits the ball it isn’t touching the ground right. Also , every pro uses lie angle to fine tune direction.
I’ve been to 4 major manufacturers headquarters here in Carlsbad. None of them check if the club if flat on the ground because that’s not correct. They’ll adjust upright to move the shot grouping left and flat to move it right. That’s how you’re supposed to use lie angle. Trust me I fit for a living
@@danwhitehurst9592 so when they test the clubs they use iron Byron correct? Do the manufacturers test the heel or toe hitting first or does the club impact square?
@@NG-tz8wo they actually test contact in numerous places on the face. They’ve also done numerous tests to see what spec changes does what to the ball flight.
As far as using it in a fitting aspect with people, lie angle is used to change the direction of the ball and the fact that the toe or heel may be a bit down doesn’t have a negative. Unless the ball flight isn’t what you want. It’s the same reason slicers buy draw biased drivers.
That’s how good players get straight ball flight. They create a consistent shot shape and then use other parts of the club to cancel out a bit or all of that shape.
For me I hit a high draw. So my club adjustments are a little flat lie angle, shafts a bit too stiff grips a bit too big. I don’t do much else. I found out what parts of the club I’m most sensitive to and adjusted them to help dial in my ball flight perfectly.
Dan, I’m 6’1 with short arms, 38 inch WTF measurement. I was told to get clubs +1/2 longer and 3* upright. Does that lie angle sound like too much?
I hope this works. I always put the bottom of the iron flat exactly as he describes and I’m an inconsistent high handicap newbie. I’m going to try this. 🤞
It will work, if you look at any impact picture from the front …the shaft is bowed exactly like he’s saying…
This is right and wrong if you have been properly fitted for your club the lie angle of your club should stop this from happening…. Right?
@@baldamerican1333 being fitted is great, but if you are bringing the club too close too your body it will still flatten the sole to the ground. It's a setup issue.
Get fitted for clubs.
I lie it flat and hit consistent shots... I'm no pro but it helped me tremendously, but who knows it could benefit you.
Dude is showing you how to shank the ball
Quite literally ripping golf balls off the heel straight into partners golf cart
This basically the only comment he didn’t like 😂😂😂
@@jordanslager3684 did that with my driver a few weeks ago after the group in front insisted we play through. Dude drove his golf cart up about 30ft in front and the left of the tee box. Ripped a 150mph drive right into his cart. Missed everyone somehow, needless to say it was a rather uncomfortable situation.

I just started this 2 weeks ago and I flush the balls with my 4 iron and it's shaping much better for me.
I literally felt the club shift in my hand while watching this video when he demonstrated the face opening when contacting the ball.
I’ve been playing for over twenty years, always have addressed the ball with the sole flat, have always hit it solid 🤷🏾♂️
I'm a scratch golfer and I lay it flat. It goes where I want.
That's because his advice is complete nonsense...
@@levelup6243No it’s not. It’s perfectly true.
Always?
@@untzkoolaidI’m a scratch golfer and I have the toe up. Goes where I want.
in my experience getting far better just over the past 4 months in my swing, is to do whats is comfortable for you and what helps YOU hit the shot you need. taking advice can really help the progression but in the end as long as it works for you thats all that matters
Well now, playing for 8 years and this is the first time I've heard this bit of information!! Thank you! I'd almost given up on my irons because they would always go RIGHT on me unless I was making a simple pitch shot!
Ok, wait a damn minute, why was this so useful?! I tried this out at the range and I’ll definitely be doing a lot better on the course😂😂
I tried golf first time today and realised this about 30 minutes later at range🤝🏽 this really helps. Now i know i did it right
Thank you for showing me why my iron hits go to the right so much lmaooo
I have heard of this many times, I put my club down arms relaxed the toe is slightly up as he shows. If your club is flat your to close to the ball puting the shaft to vertical. He is correct.
I tried this and it works. I hit some really flush iron and fairway wood shots. I was completely surprised that small of a change made that much of a difference. Along with some decent putting, I broke 80 for the first time this year. Thanks for the tip...⛳
Remember Hanz and Franz from Saturday Night Live? "Hear me now and believe me later." I was told this years ago and thought it was ridiculous. After seeing photos of the shaft bend just before impact I became a believer. Next time you go to the range, give this a try. You may not get quality strikes immediately, but give it a chance. You'll be glad you did.
This makes so much sense, Every time I set the club on the ground with the ball positioned a little closer to the heel of the face, I manage to hit pretty good shots!
The last thought in my head needs to be, “wait….how many Euros of space should be under my iron???” Great tip dude. Gotta love the freaking BBC.
I've lined up my irons flat on the ground for almost 30 years. I'm not saying I've never hit a bad shot with an iron. But I'm very consistent with my irons for an amateur I'd say, I average 80. I don't like these types of instructionals that use always or never. There's always exceptions to the rules. As for this one, this may be for a very specific few, and you say never line it up flat, when most people do it and have very few issues from it.
I think the whole tip is bogus because the shaft does not bend in the direction he says that would put the sole flat on the ground.
Same here since I was 10 years old I’m 48 now and still piercing my irons and my club is flat . Good luck fellow golfers
Oh OK: shaft flex on the downswing makes the club “shorter” in practice, therefore the shaft needs to come by a bit closer to yourself (than the setup) to still reach the ball, and the closer angle makes the club go flat on the ground during the swing
This is the tip I NEEDED! Thank you
I used to have the problem of digging the toe of the club head into the ground, I fixed it by dropping my hands through impact. It at least worked out for me
This is one of the things that made me start hitting nice shots. I did EXACTLY what he just described at the end there when I was first starting
I knew that the sole shouldn't be flat and the toe off the ground, but I never knew why? Thanks!
One of the best tips I've heard !
Thank you Todd!
Cause you're new and you think this shit is just amazing.
Flex of the shaft depends on the stiffness and swing speed. This is why people with fast swing speeds use stiff and xstiff shafts. If you are using the right shaft stiffness then you really shouldnt have to worry much about flex on the downswing.
you want that flex though. That's where you get that power from from it snapping down. All clubs and downswings will and should flex which means what he is describing is relevant. I'm curious to give this a try too as I usually make sure to start my club flat
It's called shaft droop. If there is no droop the shaft is too stiff for you to begin with.
Every club will flex. There’s no avoiding it unless you want to swing at 39mph 😂
I’ve been doing this all my time golfing thank you for the tip
I have played golf for 20 years...have never heard this tip...I'll try it.
25 for me.....damn near all my "misses" are fat, or on the toe. This makes absolutely so much sense. I'm playing in 2 days. Crossing my fingers.
@@justsayin5209 Good luck I haven't gotten the chance to test it out but will try to stop by the range tomorrow or Wednesday...lmk if it worked for you and I'll post back cause who knows as I say I've never heard or read this tip anywhere...my irons have been flat at address for 20 years 🤷
@@johnhays2915 same
i used to do this to get rid of the shanks or heel shot. it worked for that
If you address the ball flat - it will encourage an early extension - just saying
This can also cause tons of pulls/hooks/heal dig if you have too much toe lift.
If you have too much, yes
If you can't hit the ball correctly yes you will have alot of bad shots
He's right....whenever I ground the club flat I tend to hit out toward the toe.
I will try this tomorrow when I play! Some of the best tips ever are from Lee Trevino. Several of his tips has turned me from 100+ to high 70’s to mid 80’s.
😅 I swing just like da Supa Mex Trevino
@@matt7iron wished I did. Nothing wrong with the Merry Mex and his game.
Correct in a conventional swing. The single plane swing is flat and has less corrections to make in the down swing
I learned this on my own one day practicing my impact position. I was going from address to impact position just for feels, and noticed my toe was touching in the impact position. It helped me realized I was standing over the ball too much (I'm 6'6"), coming over the top, etc etc. Great tip!
I was thinking about this exact thing at the range recently. Thanks for the well-explained tip!
It's different for everyone. If some people did this they'd be horribly left...any wrist rotation exaggerated, heel dig etc.
Why hadn't I seen this advice before? Thanks.
currently not having issues with my iron shots. gonna just go ahead and ignore this tip otherwise i risk ruining my entire shot i have going on right now. losing your shot is the worst
The instruction manual that came with my set of clubs conveniently left this out. The instructions on installing a window fan failed to omit a vital piece of information and my fan never worked correctly until i figured it out on my own. Manufacturers need to write clearer instructions.
it doesn't matter if your club is square or not. There are so many factors comes into play from shaft to swing plane etc...
I found this trick and noticed other golfers doing it too, so I tried it, as well as also opening the club face, and holding the sole of the club off the ground before I pull back the club for the swing. Never hit it fat as often as I used to thanks to these
Is that all you had to do before the swing? Nothing really
That is the recipe for a shank. If anything, keep the heel slightly elevated.
I needed this. Thank you.
I dont move the club fast enough to get it bendy. But thanks for reducing the area of the face with which i should hit the ball as if it wasn't small enough already.
Qb coach that had success with Teddy and Jameis is a stretch of the word success. Drew Brees for sure but as we are finding out with Brady/Belichick and Tomlin/Big Ben to name a few, sometimes you just get a good one and its less QB/Coach/Guru and more, this player has both the tangibles and more importantly the intangebles. I guess We will see with Nix.
Another variable is that most players don’t return their hands to the exact same place as they were at address. They are either higher or lower. My guess is most are higher
Started doing this with my driver and seems to help, next round will try with the irons
Damn CZcams algorithm really out here knowing wtf I need to see and hear
Damn the algorithm found me this video and this was the exact problem I was dealing with.
THIS IS LITERALLY ME OMG wish i know this 15 years ago
Clubs are designed to be soled with the ground. It's worst to have too much toe into the ground or too heel off the ground
Wow such a simple and easy explanation. Thanks, will keep an eye on this next time on the range 🎉
I just took a leeson for the first time ever and that was one of the things I was shown and have to say I've been hitting less off the toe and more on the sweet spot!
Never played golf ever but i watch
club doesnt necessarily open but the loft is pointing further right (relative to neutral lie angle) if delivered toe down
What's more important is your Lie angle at impact, not address. If you're striking the ball with toe down and heel up like he shows, then your clubs are too flat, and you need to bend your clubs more upright. Just addressing the ball flatter won't change your natural swing.
Thanks for the tip. I know now why my shot goes right
As a 3 handicap I can confirm but honestly there is so much more to it than just one trick fix you’re foundation then work on small things like this
Incredible advice, I never even heard of this and will try immediately. Thank you sir!👊🏽
How do you know it’s incredible advice if you haven’t tried it lol
That’s kind of mind blowing and makes me realize why my shot does what it does
The best 50 seconds I’ve ever seen, thank you.
Thank you Richard. So kind!
Whether the club bend or not depends more on swing speed and shaft flex. Just say'n.
I’ll try it but this makes no sense to me. The direction the shaft bends does not cause the toe to come down in my opinion. I think doing this will return the club to the ground the way it left, heel down. Which will cause the heel to hit alone and make the club face shut down. We’ll see.
Thank you for the nice simple explanation.
That’s why you get fitted and bend your irons to your natural hand position
Especially useful for pitching wedge. Effective provided you get into the ball.
every golfers swing is different pro or not this may help you or this may not. A very small subtle change in your setup or swing can make a big difference for some and for others it may not
Always lay my sole flat - 34 yrs playing now and always a baby draw down the middle - maybe if you already suck this might work but I don’t mess with what works
I agree playing now similarly and always hit it flush - if I hit it with heel up I would thin it every time - this German dude don’t know diddly squat - reasons they make you have a license to play golf because they still think they are superior
thanks for this. i always lay it flat. i'll see what happens after this fix
This tip legitimately changed my game!
Static lie angle vs. dynamic. Which is another reason why a good fitter will check sole impact and adjust accordingly based on how the player loads the shaft.
i literally paused this mid video to check if someone had posted this exact comment
This is why club fitting is important.
The correct flex and it won’t bend like he’s suggesting.
The club always bends a little bit. It’s impossible for it not to if you’re swinging it with even the SMALLEST amount of force, no matter how stiff the shaft.
Funny i was thinking about that today when i was hitting in my net today with a launch monitor. I was getting some fades at times certainly and was catching my toe on occasion.
Not entirely sure I understand his argument, but it seems like he is implying that the shaft is flexed at impact with the clubhead trailing? If that's his argument, I'm pretty sure he is wrong. The clubhead lags behind the shaft on the way down, but by impact, the head has caught up and is actually leading the shaft. All I know is that this is a tip that should be taken with a grain of salt, because I've been playing golf for 41 years and I've tried addressing the ball toward the heel. It has resulted in less consistent contact with the sweet spot for me.
No way this is serious? 😂 you gotta be fucking with us
I set up pretty flat. My loft a lie measurements are always good, and I have no issue with leaking right. If anything, I miss with a block or an overdraw. Saying it will help a slice is always safe because most higher handicap golfers come over the top and play with a wicked slice.
That actually explains a lot with some of my iron swings
Thanks man I’ve been doing this and been hitting right
listen, im not a professional by any means, however i do play golf. and from what my coach and other mentors have told me, this doesn’t seem to be a good problem solver, and i think if you tried to hit the ball like this that it would push left.
A million golf tips heard I have never been told this one thank you sir !
Bro if I tip the toe of my iron up I’m hitting that heel every time 😂
especially for guys like me. I have an upright swing and when I tend to put pressure on my toes I can feel the toe of the club want to dig in on me. Mizuno is also known to be flat so check your lie angle
I have always laid the soul flat and always seem to fade it slightly. I started doing this recently and it straighten out my shots. Maybe it’s different for everyone, but if you have a tendency to fade, this could work for some. Worth trying.
Me on google after this: "what us coin is the same thickness of a $2 euro coin"
That’s actually pretty helpful. For me anyway
Before modern club fitting in loft and Lai machines, everyone did that. With the old ball you play draw that way, but it doesn’t work with the new bolster. Take copious notes and make the changes. It’s called turf interaction with the new ball then just get a hook.
He’s not wrong I noticed this myself got new wedges I’ve got them standard lie my gap-4 is 2 flat (as fitted btw) and I lay them flat and at impact have noticed toe digging lately
Fantastic tip ! Great job !
Hopefully I remember this.
How could it possibly be good...or bad, if you haven't tried it?
Golden tip, it works! Just don't lift the toe too much off the ground or you'll be hitting hooks. Adjust with your clubs at the range.
I’ve been doing this after years of putting it flat on the ground and it has done wonders for my game
Thanks for sharing Jonathan!
