Very much a masterpiece...when playing it...I'm just reading the chords not thinking of the theory...however knowing the theory helps to grasp it. Thank you.

You’re the first one to comment on my Lush Life tutorial. Hopefully, you won’t be the last. I assume you viewed both parts. Lush Life is a work that only a musician can really appreciate. Only when you delve into the music can you appreciate the artistry of Strayhorn.

@@davidburtstudio Yes, I watched both. I played it this past weekend at a cocktail hour at a wedding on piano. It is definitely not for the faint hearted. Your two videos helped me understand the theory behind it and helped me understand it better. I'm a classically trained percussionist. I put this piece on the same level of playing Bach on marimba. Different genres, but both genius. Thank you.

I'm so pleased you played it at the wedding. I wish more musicians would perform it, since it deserves more exposure and recognition. It took me a while to build up my confidence to perform Lush Life in public. It truly is a musician's song. I have also posted my rendition of it apart from my tutorial.

One of my favourite songs. After analyzing it I now know why.

Thank you for mentioning the Julie London version. Sung without the verse as Julie does, it is easier to follow both the words and the music. The verse is so complicated in so many ways.

I hope you watch Part 1 and Part 2 of my tutorial on Lush Life. I agree, the opening verse can be challenging, but it is an intricate part of the song. Go on, take the challenge.

excellent video! do you have a pdf of your transcription with the chord symbols on top of each measure?

I’m pleased you enjoyed my PARTS 1 & 2 of LUSH LIFE. It’s a wonderful song to play, and very interesting to analyze. Unfortunately, I don’t have a transcription with chord symbols other than on the chords that I pointed out in my tutorial. The good news is that the sheet music is readily available from CZcams. I strongly suggest you download the Db arrangement 😎

“Romance is mush; stifling those who strive.
I’ll live the Lush Life, in some small dive.”
Thank you for your helpful analysis of this, Mr. Burt. “Equal division of the octave” was a term that I had not heard before. A nice challenge for this intermediate player. I’ve enjoyed hours of work on it.
As you mentioned, Sinatra never finished recording this as, (it is reported) he had trouble “interpreting its complexities.” Interesting to hear his frustration during this session: czcams.com/video/O2-MalOvxD4/video.html
I believe Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane were ideally suited to interpret its depth. czcams.com/video/kzi4pgpW4qY/video.html

When you have a solid understanding of Equal Division of the Octave you'll be amazed and how easy it is to move or modulate to anywhere within the Cycle of 5ths and 4ths.
I never know there was any recording of Sinatra attempting to sing LUSH LIFE. What a find. Thank you very much for sharing the link.with me, as well as the John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman version. I enjoyed it very much. I must admit, I enjoyed putting together PART 1 and 2 of my LUSH LIFE Tutorial. Glad you are enjoying them.

@@davidburtstudio Really glad you enjoyed the recording session “find.” Great teachers like you inspire people like me to “dig deeper” and usually, there is gold to be found.
