    On the subject of GPU upgrades, I have seen threads online that mention that Apple GPU BIOS files are available to download. Using a "Raspberry PI", you can flash a GPU card so that the imac will recognise that card as whatever BIOS you flashed it as. This will give you the boot screen, brightness controls etc. The problem is, I've only seen BIOS for the apple cards up to and including the Radeon 6970 2GB graphics card. If you want a GPU with higher specs than that AND you want the boot screen etc, then you somehow need to get a BIOS file for one of the later Apple cards. I know there was at least one macbook pro from 2018 that had an 8gb card - if someone can get a download of that BIOS then that would open up a whole range of possible GPU upgrades!

    • @NicVandEmZ
      @NicVandEmZ Před 4 lety +1

      Rendell001 here a instal Ubuntu and use it to get bios from the graphics cards

    • @Rendell001
      @Rendell001 Před 4 lety

      NicVandEmZ okay so I did some research on this and found out that from 2012 onwards, the iMacs used integrated GPUs instead of cards. This to say that the graphics processor is actually part of the motherboard! So... wether or not you can get the bios is only one problem- it’s almost certain the later Mac OS’s have lists of configurations for all the released macs. If yours doesn’t quite fit those specs then there’s a good chance that the OS will prevent start up...

    The mid-2010 21.5” can accommodate an i7. It has to be either the 860S or 870S because their low power consumption is compatible with the power supply in this machine. Most people go for the 860S because of the price difference You also can put up to 32 Gb of RAM in these machines with those processors. There an extremely documented guide for this particular model. Great video! My mid 2011 27” iMac AMD graphics card just went out (it was already replaced a time before, at an Apple store. This time I want to do it myself). I just need to get my machine back up into High Sierra, don’t care about Mojave or Catalina. So my questions are: the two cards you showed on the screen would fit and work simply without any cutting etc.? And with one of these, I can boot back up into High Sierra with any black screen or problems. Also, if I just go in and replace the card do I have to worry about my data or do I have to figure out how to get my data onto another drive first. Your answers are much appreciated.

    • @MacintoshMen
      @MacintoshMen  Před 4 lety

      If you can get another AMD 5000 or 6000 Series card out of another iMac, then it will be just plug and play. No cutting, no bootscreen loss nothing. Also don't worry about data because it is stored on the HDD, so the graphics card has nothing to do with it. Your system should just boot up normally with the new GPU.

    • @MacintoshMen
      @MacintoshMen  Před 3 lety +2

      Max GPU for a 2009 is probably 765M. I say probably because in theory you could put in much faster cards such as 770M, 870M, etc but there have been reports of kernel panics because of the card's power draw being too high. The only downside is that you can't flash any of them for Mac on your system because the custom vbios needs core i3 or later.
