Aaannnnd I'm the 1000th reply.
😀
I know so.
lmao
Also cool
imagine if kendrick just came out of nowhere and started spittin bars
Right?! Every time I see them play this I keep hoping.
I'd pay anything to be able to time travel to the studio when this song first happened!
I think Dave Chappelle showed up a lil later. . .

The musicians responsible for making the greatest rap album of out time.
YES LAWD!
and the best b-side album ever
What album is that, good sir? I truly am intrigued
@@mammontustado9680 Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly

As a bassist, comforting to see even Thundercat has the band talking amongst themselves while he solos
imagine having these guys on your team. no wonder why pimp was such a legendary album
1000%!! Kendrick lucked out.
@@strokesoco somewhat luck, but more importantly, talent recognizes talent. Good Kid Maad City is also an amazing album. it's obvious that these guys recognized and were drawn to Kendrick's talent.
@@carstarsarstenstesenn Oh god absolutely. Especially by the time they were making TPaB. Kendrick is something special.

Hahaha right??
I’ve never clicked on a video so fast lol

Shout out to the drummer for being in the damn pocket all day long haha
CHRIS DAVE
Chris Dave is one of the most influential cats there is
@@MrOhmygoditsben Yeah I have researched him since my post he has a dope tiny desk that come out but yeah theres a group of influential musicians of our era and he is definitely one of them!
A D - Chris DADDY Dave
Chris Dave young foo ass
love how the basist sees thundercat, hugs him and hands the bass and proceeds to groove out. such a cool interaction and vibes.
Agustin Fernandez they are shedding as we musicians call it. It’s all love for the most part. You see a cat you know that can play too you pass the instrument...❤️
Agustin Fernandez the bassist? That's Derrick Hodge
Lucas Steinberger lmao ikr
THEY were playing on thundercat's song with kenny after all
That bass player (Derrick Hodge) is an absolute monster in his own right too.
E'rbody, pay attention to these cats. We're witnessing the next wave of jazz, right here, in which these guys will be forefront!
100%!
Powerhouse collective..can we have a tour and album....pretty please
Thundercat be like, "Hold my blunt."
i think they are already at the forefront xD
Absolutely--I keep telling folks this.
*Thundercat gets on bass*
_This level's intensity has now increased over 9000_
Kamasi is possessed by that tenor. He's not even thinking about it, it's just happening.
Fuck you acknowledge the amount of work he’s actively doing and how much thinking it requires to play at that level.
@@dylanmiller1140 Actually quite the opposite happens when you solo. When you're not thinking about it it's actually better than putting thought into your playing.

This is the dream team right here.
Seriously.
Terrace's look when Thundercat came in lool
Vuk Aleksic his response was exactly how I feel every time i hear Thundercat music. my. god
GodivaDiva11 lmao I realized Cam Graves came in the middle of the song to ask Robert sth (around 4:30), almost as funny
id react the same way to man dudes an amazing artist
Another great bassplayer just left: Derrick Hodge..........
lol that wasn't Cam that was some dude who worked at the venue.
I used to work at a jazz club that has been unable to reopen since March because of covid restrictions. I started crying watching this video because it reminds me so much of the effortless, incredible talent I used to get to see every night for free. The improvisation, the chemistry, the intimate setting, even the occasional mistake that can be turned into something unique - there’s nothing like it
Dude I feel this deeply. My absolute favorite jazz venue in Los Angeles (blue whale) just closed permanently and I am fucking CRUSHED. I hope your venue can survive. Check out all my videos...there's so much good stuff like this including many more from this night. Search my videos for "virgil" to bring those up.
Jazz is not effortless . It’s not just talent. It’s work . It’s hard work and it’s always diminished with this type of banter. I understand your statement as it relates to your feelings but the work of art that jazz is is very very complex.
@@Crayton10 I apologize if my wording was unclear. I did not mean that this comes naturally to the players because obviously it takes a lot of knowledge and hard work. I only meant that they make what they do look easy, but obviously it's only through years of hard work that they get to that point. I'm happy to edit my original comment to provide that clarification if needed.
And that is why Derrick Hodge is one of my favorites, most guys would not have done that.
Free Man totally agree with you. Derrick Hodge has some serious skills on the bass & a great cat also
Met him at Smalls Jazz Club years ago
I mean Thundercat is the bassist on the track, so why not let the original play instead of the cover
Both Derrick Hodge and Thundercat are KILLERS on the Bass. In their own different ways.
straight up, and he is right there with Thundercat..... humble, beautiful vibes.
he's so great
if they made an album it is very likely that the world would end
Lexus THUPRMND they did !!!!!!!!!!
Check out R=R=Now.. Kamasi, Steve & Chris aren't there but it's still an awesome cast
No Kamasi....
If were being technical "to pimp a butterfly" is there album musically since there the musician's for it
@@keathmueller7826 u crazy... Kamasi is a genius
This is so jazz! Random People moving all about all around the musicians, Thundercat looked like he just popped in by looking at how Terrace reacted when he realized who jumped on the bass. Derrick Hodge, like a groupie, excitingly recording Thundercat playing...only to be disrupted by the bass chord or something accidentally clicked off and helping power back up the bass. Glasper chilling, improvising, joking around, taking a sip, etc. Kamasi in the zone oblivious to all that around him and holding his ground while slaying that sax. So much chaos yet still kept together for an amazing performance. 😁
Hear, hear. I love it.
Yeah, Mr. Hodge. ❤
1:36 "Wow, they really liked that sax lick"
The lady with the fro, Rose Gold... Her presence just adds a cool vibe to this video. This just looks like the place to be for all the cool kats in town. Lovin this video.
She is fly as fuck.
Although, I swear she's filming Thundercat's shoes!
Absolutely!
Nothin like having natural Sista's around...heck SisTa's period...they always bring that thing..to da thang!😘
Is that Esperanza S?
all true musicians have been where these cats were during this set: when in doubt ... dig deep ... and play through it .. the result is usually either crash and burn or create something phenomenal. These guys somehow snatched "phenomenal" out of the jaws of "crash and burn". True artistry.
even though derrick hodge only played a little it's still crazy the difference in sounds one bass can make. As soon as thundercat picked it up it sounded like him.
Absolutely. It's so fun watching the realization dawn on Terrace's face. At first he's like "? What are they cheering for specifically in this part of the song?" and then he hears something different going on with the bass. So good.
11:40 dude i swear Thundercat was channelling Austin Peralta then...that was special. I swear he's one of the greatest bassists who's ever blessed this earth
Awwww that's sweet. I bet he thinks about Austin often. RIP.
This rhythm section got my big toe shootin out ma boot.
That's Derrick Hodge on bass, oh nevermind, watch out, y'all! Thundercat'll drop in!
Casually just slip in there. 8)
I love how Hodge immediately changes the settings to add punch and match Thundercat's style
ok it's official those two need to do a stand off lmao
Is Hodge one of the idiots standing on the side of the stage... go somewhere else, I don't care if you're a pretty young lady bopping to the drummer's beat.
@@RedAlEarttDramaMeanWhoDat it’s like you had to go looking for something negative to say about the video, when there are so many more positive things that you could say.
That moment when Derrick Hodge passes bass to Thundercat. Both of them would kill it, but Derrick still did it. Awesome! :)
Derrick plays the shit out of a bass.
dawg thundercat came in and SNAPPPEEEDDDDD
To be a fly on the wall for this 🤩
the masterminds of the universe are all here
Terrace making sure Chris Dave got the astronomical applause his solo earned. It's like it ended, and nobody clapped that hard, scared they'd interrupt it. So Chris' like "Chris Daddy Dave on the drums, y'all." But that wasn't enough. So he goes one by one like "Great dude, great great dude, the actual Thundercat himself, and CHRIS DADDY MUTHAFUCKIN DAVE!" And finally, everybody went off. Some classy behavior.
I cannot believe all these guys played together idk what i wouldnt give to be there...n playing one of my favorite kendrick beats wow
alot of the guys in this lineup are on the original track fam. its not even really a cover.
When Thundercat plays you WILL know he is playing, same for Robert 🔥But mad respect ✊ and love ❤️ to everyone on this stage and special shoutout to Derrick Hodge!!🙌🏾💯😎
Also gotta love Chris “D.” Dave🔥🥁🙌🏾
And they talk during the bass solo haha
A classic
And no one missed a beat, during the whole conversation. Phenomenal
Lol, this is the third consecutive video I've watched where Glasper is at the keyboard, drinking out of a straw and pulling his phone out... Always crushing the keys though...
All these guys need to get together and record an album together. Make it a rotating ensemble. Invite Derrick Hodge, Ronald Bruner Jr, Erykah Badu, Esperanza Spalding, Flying Lotus, etc.. It doesn’t need to be accessible, just some damn good music.
They did, it's called To Pimp A Butterfly
Imagine Coltrane or Miles playing with these cats...
Right?!
Ethan May I think they'd be proud
Ethan May imagine Herbie also.
Oh yea.
Mr. Smiley you can see Terrace on tour with Herbie this summer!
the smile on kamasi's face when thundercat walks in is priceless...he's like we about to teeer the roof offff this muthafu
As soon as Terrance plays he brings back those Section 80 "Ab-Soul Outro" vibes and Ab-soul's "Kendrick Lamar Interlude" vibes
I come back to watch this about 4x a year since 2018. Thank you to whoever capture this magic! I saw Kamasi Washington in concert about two years ago in Brooklyn, it was divine

That's what he did in one of the most recent videos I just posted! With Glasper, Herbie, and more.
I found it czcams.com/video/64ZgSECmtd4/video.html
It's Untitled 5 for sure, Kamasi just quotes/plays around with the melody from nardis a bit
9:00 that spontaneous descending chromatic line between bass and keys. That's some psychic-shit. Even Kamasi had to look back and groove.
One of my favorite songs played by my favorite contemporaries. Tears.
What a LEGENDARY assortment of gentlemen
Seemed like thundercat didn't play one unsure note, man knew where he was going with it the entire time
"And it means the world to me"
Awesome! The lineup couldn't get any better. Thank you for recording and sharing this amazing piece of art.
Why the fuck isnt this at 1 million plus views....this is one of the best collaborations I've ever seen. And when Thundercat walks in....its was like Game over! Pure talent. #salute
I think I'll sell all my mics and get an iphone

its probably one of the mics that attaches to the iphone
strokesoco said it was just the phone
Literally just my iphone, no attachments whatsoever. I think it must have been a combo of the phone and standing right in front of the speaker. And a good sound mix over the PA I guess.
Just leaving a 1:53 time stamp for myself the next time I’m here. I know this is a jazz set, but the pummeling low end on Thundercat’s bass has me wanting to write some doom metal.
Good lord, we give thanks for this music..thank you for sharing the peaceful vibes
I been constantly watching this video for three years. Never fails to motivate me or lift me up. Thanks for posting. You’ve made my life better
Man, my absolute pleasure. Every time people bitch to "put your phone down and enjoy the experience; you're never gonna watch that video again..." I remember how I've re-watched my jazz videos countless times and I'm so glad I was able to capture these moments for posterity. If you haven't looked already, I have multiple videos from this night. If you search youtube for "strokesoco virgil" they should all come up.
The people in the background, on the stage, were all over the place, so I commend these musicians for not getting distracted. But jazz is a little bit of chaos, cosmos.... so, I see.
The crowd reaction when Thundercat puts on that bass. Terrace thought they were cheering for him😂
That's one of my very favorite parts. :)
I had to scroll too far to see this🤣🤣🤣

I love live jazz. But this group of talents. Incredible,...wow!
So much greatness in one stage!
Ugh, that transition at 3:35 was so perfect. This whole video is so powerful, keep coming back to it. Not many things give me the range of emotions this does.
I try to record these shows for exactly this type of response. It's for posterity. People need to see it. It's great in the moment but it needs to live on.
strokesoco it’s so validating that you’re doing this because it is pure substance. That is incredibly rare. I love kendrick lamar and untitled 05 was already one of if not my favorite hip hop songs. Coming across this for the first time validated so many things that go beyond music. Not that this alone is the ultimate validation because there have been plenty of things. This just sticks out to me because of how many connections it has for me and with things beyond myself. Getting back to kendrick, i love him but I think it’s clear the majority of his fans aren’t really there for the pure substance. It’s not that black and white with people usually so I am generalizing of course but you sort of have to. Seeing these guys... Dave Chapelle, the musicians themselves, all of it, with this song and the way they played it. It speaks to that truth of a deeper purer reality with more substance beyond all of the superficial that in my personal journey has shown to pervade every part of my immediate surroundings as well as society as a whole. I hope this doesn’t just sound like nonsense to you but yeah, I was just tearing up listening to this reflecting on Dwyane Wade (amazing human and basketball player who’s retiring and he’s part of these connections for me) and just reflecting on certain things in my life right now, how much self criticism and hate seems to be so tied to me and such and I was just tearing up a bit which I’m not an emotional person and I don’t think I’m capable of fully crying lol because I haven’t done it since I was 12 or so but every once in a while I get these moments of deep clarity and connection to these things and tonight was a pretty strong one, so yeah I really mean it when I say this is powerful to me. Thank you.
Whoever recorded this, Thank you.
