Black music can never die. Ever. Jazz? Blues? Gospel? Hip-hop? Never die. As long as we breathe and live we'll keep on creating. You'll give it new names but it's the same old thing. Rhythms that have existed before language was conceived, to steal Chappelle's statement. You just can't stop the funk.

Some people get jazz, some don't. If you get it, you're so F-ing lucky… it's like a fire, the shit is the real raw deal. When I was 15, I was incredibly intrigued and attracted to it, but I didn't get it. I would get the more accessible little bits here and there. But then I bought a record by this “Coltrane” guy, because he's supposed to be the best or something… first time I heard it felt INSANE, and not in a good way, I thought it was music that a crazy person would enjoy. It was TOOOO much for me. But I thought “man, this has to mean something, this guy is not playing a prank, he's feeling it, I'm sure”. It felt like a powerful secret language that I just couldn't make sense of. So I insisted upon it. I kept listening to that record, on and on and on. For weeks, months… and then one day, and I remember it vividly, I just got it, I got the message. I just heard it a different way, it became alive, almost like I was blind and then could see-I think it was because my brain had been exposed to it enough to absorb all those harmonies, the progressions, the rhythms, and then finally my brain could assemble the puzzle, and I enjoyed that music so damn much. That period of my life opened my mind to a whole new world, not only in music, but a world of aesthetics, of completely abstract things, something to do with the fabric of the universe. And the main benefit is that it made me understand I could learn anything. We are blessed with a big brain that can absorb things, as long as you are interested enough to give it time. John Coltrane changed the wiring of my brain. Like a preacher that showed me the way, speaking a language I first couldn't understand. If you don't quite get jazz, I just hope this will inspire you to really immerse yourself in it, be curious and intrigued-believe me: it's a treasure hidden right under everybody's nose. Go deep into John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Wayne Shorter, just to name a few. It will be transformative. It's the most inspiring and elegant music. I can't get enough of it. I grow every time I listen to it.
