    i got accused of plagiarizing my final paper for my BA in university. the school used this program called turninit to say i had plagiarized my paper. i had not plagiarized my paper but for whatever reasons the algorithm that this program uses deems every piece of text not in a physical quotation mark as plagiarism. I had not used actual physical quotation marks for my citations but i did however provide a footnote and endnote citation for each of my sources. because i did not use the quotation marks, my similarity score was something like 60%. I had to go through a kangaroo court in order to prove that i did not plagiarize my final paper. i ended up winning the appeal and the school did not find me guilty of an academic integrity violation but my professor still decided to fail me for the class and i had to retake it and delay my graduation by a semester and waste thousands of dollars in retaking this course. it was honestly the most ridiculous thing i have ever encountered in my academic career and i hope that no one else has to experience what i did.

      Sorry to hear that. I did not plagiarise but my friend and I had similar (nearly identical) notes and within out notes we wrote "exam practise" - a way we would describe the topic. During our online exams I referred to my notes as well as my friend. Two questions we covered in our notes came up so I copied my notes. Both my friend and I have a high similarity and I have a meeting tomorrow- I am really nervous but since it is my first year I hope the punishment is not bad. I am not too sure how to back my case I can only give them my notes as well as mt friend. give his? Not too sure... :(

      Zunnairah Ghufoor yes that is exactly what you should do. This “plagiarism” happened during the note taking process and that is a very common form of it. I would suggest both you and your friend bring copies of the notes and even messages of you two planning the meeting to study together. Show the board members every shred of evidence that you have showing that you two studying together and took notes together. I wish you luck in this bullshit plagiarism process.

      @@druem This just happened to me, I "plagerised" sources for my final Bioinformatics Bachelor Thesis that I didnt even know existed because of in bio, everyone uses the same phrases. Everything was marked, from titles to even the bibliography was plagerism and 20% excluding all that bullshit its less than 10% but the idiot cant be bothered to look through the reference. Some of the sites listed were so rediculous that it was clear that the Prof. didnt bother to look through the claims. For a couple of general knowledge, he told me that I should cite general knowledge section even though I wrote them myself with no external sources. He told me that I should cite them eitherway because it doesnt matter. Imagine the insanity of that. Im fighting for this to my death.

      Welp, this happened to me yesterday. Got an email saying that I got invited to attend a preliminary interview for a possible breach of academic integrity; 6 days from now. Our UNI also uses Turnitin similar to yours and they gave me the attachment of that assessment from Turnitin. I got like 45% Similarity Index. Also in the same boat as you, I didn't use many citations for my report but I do add all my sources to my references section. Though I think it's kinda BS because, on the bottom of the Turnitin assessment, the settings say: Exclude bibliography Off. Which also adds the front cover and also the references section to the Similarity Index Percentage. I could probably get under 40% if they turn those settings on which I think they should. I kinda feel guilty but at the same time, I am not. I feel guilty because I was rushing to finish this assessment at the time because I need to have enough time to revise for the 24hr open book exam the day after. I ended up finishing the assessment and didn't sleep the following day to revise and finish the 24hr exam. I was really exhausted and tired at the time and it really did take a toll on my mental health. But I was actually honest about my work, I tried my best to reference everything and paraphrase and much as I can without removing the important points for each and every paragraph. Then 3 weeks later I fricking get this email?! The professor who accused me of plagiarism commented on the email saying that my assessment paper was "too little effort, and sources were paraphrased but not cited at all". I was quite sad about it. Hopefully the punishment is not severe. I would rather retake my assessment than to have to retake the module again. Thank goodness this is my first time, I heard second time is the final warning either withdrawling from the entire course or fighting your way in the student conduct heering (to which you would also probably lose).

      @@hazqier I have my hearing tomorrow (30 June) and I am really nervous about it. I have prepared as much as I can but I am scared they will catch me off guard and ask me something I don't have the answer to. I think my main issue is that I didn't paraphrase properly and didn't put quotation marks when I was supposed to. my similarity index was 21% when I submitted it to TurnItIn but when they sent me back my coursework it came out as 27%...

    most of it appears to be a nonsense. I stated that most essays will be similar as we are all on the same tracks to the same destination with the same info supplied . The whole thing is nothing short of an annoyance to a person who has not plagiarised. I also would suspect the software used have tried different software and the results are different.

      They get railroaded usually. Very little due process. The student judges (trained in the Code of Conduct) or jurors (randomly drawn from student population, untrained in the Code) are usually selected by school administration. The presiding officer/hearing officer/judge is usually also selected by the administration, without guaranteed terms. Judges/jurors are assigned by school administration to vote on cases as well. At pretty much every school.

    • @RanywayzRandom
      @RanywayzRandom  Před 2 lety

      [Disclaimer: NOT legal advice] Exam boards, examination committees, student code of conduct, student charters, etc. are generally set up to regulate student behaviors and conduct. Faculty members, academics, researchers on the other hand are regulated by the employment conditions laid out by the university and other relevant laws and regulations of higher education, scientific research, etc. Things may also differ depending on where the university is operating. So if a faculty member has allegedly committed serious academic misconduct, the first step is probably to alert the management of the university.

      These Colleges and Universities spend way too much time on trying to look for cheating. There is a reason robots are taking over. I also find it very funny when college or university say do not use websites such as Google but have a ton of content in there courses from CZcams Ted events like CZcams is owned by Google and I would trust a Google search over anything from your not updated college library has for reference with a bunch of ads. Meanwhile these colleges are charging each student. Imagine a mechanic getting mad at you for buying a car part and then bringing it in to have it worked on most do not care as they are still going to charge you for labor hours. Everything in these colleges is pathetic.

      Even with a reason (e.g. I did not know how to cite sources or I did not know how to paraphrase), it is still plagiarism. The consequences are for the Academic Misconduct Panel at your school/university to decide. It's unlikely that you will be terminated from your course. It depends on how serious it is and how many times that you have committed or suspected plagiarism. Normally, we give our students a 0 and ask them to resubmit.
