Have you ever watched Garden Fundamentals? Both are very good.
I put down cardboard and then put grass clipping on top. I works well, especially in an HOA neighborhood like mine.
Thanks Nate, no danger of the sun cracking the ground here, I've a couple of inches of seaweed from the top end of the beach, it had plants growing out of it, the only problem is it's full of plastic pieces, from toy cars to lollipop sticks, sad, I piled about another 2 inches of good horse manure on top of it with shredded hedge clippings from a golf course to protect the mulch below, there's definitely an improvement from last year. I add JMS once a month roughly and compost teas every week and slug solution every night with fish hydrolysate, those pesky slugs are relentless here, neighbour's putting in a full patio to help them cross into my garden.
Does your garden smell more like the sea after using the seaweed?
@@alexkunnen no not at all, it smelt like a damp forest for the first week with the shredded hedge chippings but that's gone now, the soil is lovely and damp under them when you put your hands in to plant stuff, I've got wild pheasants that come in and hoke for bugs creeping about in the mulch.
I also use grass clippings. I go to my local lawn mowing company. And they are more than happy to give me tarp, after tarp of grass, clippings. Give that a try.

This is great! I already use mulch on the beds. Now you have encouraged me to use it to keep the paths clean. Plus I learned that if I put organic mulch down in mid-season, I could better handle the weed pressure. Thanks Nate.

It depends on the size of the seed. The bigger the seed, the more energy it has to go through soil and mulch. Small seeds like onion seeds can't be mulched before they grow. Massive "seeds" like potato tubers can go through thick mulch.

That was a huge transformation Nate. LOOKING GOOD. Next time grass is mowed, I'll be sure to get some clippings for the onions. Happy we tried the Brandywine and Galahad. Sorrel is new to us too. Green leaf variety. Lemon pepper flavor. It tastes amazing in salads. Spreads so it's in a planter.

I use garden straw to mulch everything and it has worked wonders in every way you say! Keeps thing in containers warm in the winter too. But it doesn't add nitrogen like the grass clippings. Looks like I must invest in a mower that collects these as well as chops deciduous leaves so I can use them in the gardens. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom and advice. It confirms, affirms and inspires us consistently!

Used local straw, it had a lot of grass seed so now we are still weeding. Grrrr. Should have asked about grass seed when purchased. Life and learn!
yes sometimes they set the combine too shallow and leave lots of the wheat seeds left... try to inspect the straw to see if its pure thats what I do
I live in central florida , i used arborist chips from chip drop and chop and drop from the garden because thats what's available. Do you have an experience with this?
would it be possible to do a jadam style fertilizer using just humanure and leaf mold fungi? would it be nutritious? and how long before it could be used?

What about seaweed mulch? I used it straight from the beach last year, and this year my plants are going gangbusters. I didn't wash off the salt. It's kinda rainy here so salt retention is not a big worry in my soil
seaweed mulch is wonderful if you have access to it and don't do it too thick!

Hi Nate, thank you for this video! We till every spring and trying to see if it can be avoided. Could I apply a thick layer of leaves in the garden in the fall and not grow weeds for the next years garden? Or would I have to save the leaves and reapply the fall leaves to the garden in the spring time again?
yes thats one of the best methods for mulching actually is to just pile leaves a foot thick and let it settle and decompose over the winter then in the spring time plant right into the soil beneath the leaves... there's pros and cons for sure and I'll talk about them today on the livestream... thank you!!

Hey Nate - any concern with layering on grass clippings too thick? Or is it if it’s done once the plants are already established it doesn’t really matter
there's always an upper limit but grass clippings can be as deep as 6-8 inches if they are somewhat dried out because too much fresh clippings will start to rot and can get very hot and lots of molds on them... but for the most part you can apply the grass pretty thick once they are established I have several inched deep on my onions
Learn from my mistake: I used an excessive level of leaves topped with arborist chips. I suspect this has caused most of my issues this year. The leaves or chips brought in some pest and slugs... or I left them a buffet and they thought it was an invitation. The beer traps and slug solution have mitigated the infestation, but I've got nothing growing this year, no weeds, but no produce... uggh
what!??... have you posted pictures to the discord of this?... I'd like to see them so tag me... but yes definitely the wood chips on top and the leaves on bottom I've done the same and it actually suffocates the ground it seems
Have you tried Potassium Hydroxide on soft bodied worms/bugs? Would it have the same effect as the Sodium Hydroxide? thanks
I have not tried that because there has never been a need to experiment outside of the way I was taught because its so effective as it is... try it but I reckon it might damage the plant or not dissolve the pest

As long as you keep the grass mowed it shouldn't have seed stalks
It has not seemed to be an issue for me. definitely some grass growing but I couldn’t say whether thats from the grass clippings or blew over. I think the grass seed need more time before theyre actually viable

Question Nate. Not with mulch. But something is cutting my ginger at soil level.and it's a clean cut at 45 degree angle. Smooth cut. Looks clean like a knife. Any idea?
I think that is chipmunks. They clean cut my apple tree seedling the same way. I was so mad. It was a year old and looking strong 😢
Why is it that the sweet potato leaves too big? I am still learning.
because it indicates there's a lot of fertility in the soil and sweet potatoes will produce big leaves but very small tubers if there's too much fertility
I am having a hard time finding hay that has not been sprayed by Herbicides here in Ky. There's tons of hay farms all around my county but all of them spray 😭 Does anyone know if the straw from tractor supply is ok??
I would say a big no from TSC. Plus, you wouldn't want your dollars to go to drag shows. TSC recently backpedaled but I don't care.
