    yay! been waiting for this one. Good job, I've been on the fence about whether to pick up an r7 or save more and get an r5c... that extra couple of grand saved might be better spent on glass for my c70 and r7. (quietly hoping canon drops an update in the future that gives better codecs and framerates)

    Hi Josh, great “real world” comparisons , honestly on the big iPad Pro the only image that looked a little different was the one you mentioned with the tree particularly the leaves in the centre. I have the R7 on order ….waiting waiting …. for a slightly different use-case and thats as an affordable RF mount backup to my R5. I do occasional events and short “places of interest” pieces here in NZ for YT, I incorporate video into my YT clips but I don’t see myself as particularly skilled in that area even though I started out making 8mm movies with friends back in the 70’s !! The need for a backup for events is self evident but I really wanted to ditch the old 50D I’ve been using and get something closer in capabilities to the R5 without breaking the bank, I was looking at the R6 until the R7 was announced. Keep up the reviews I find them really interesting and useful. Cheers Chris from NZ

    Thanks for this comparison! Thought about the C70 but bought an R7 to have some good 4k options to collect video material for a movie about energy (solar, wind, nuclear, fossil, etc) in a good quality. As "two-body-shooter" the R7 makes it much easier to buy a 2nd body and lugging both bodies around!
    Your video makes me believe that the R7 is the right choice for me maybe lagging some video features but sporting low weight, reasonable quality and the IBIS system is really great. I use the horizon correction feature and love it, just on a tripod. I can use a simple tripod, adjust it +/-2 degree and the camera does the rest!

    Thanks for this Josh. I’ve had the C70 since launch and love it. For a while I had no b-cam (for the first time in my life) due to the kind of content I was working on, but I recently had to get one in a rush and ended up with a Panasonic S5 because it was cheap refurbished with good image quality. I’ve been matching them through the CineMatch plugin which is amazing and gets you very close. I’d pre-ordered the R5c but felt it overkill considering I primarily just use my C70 so cancelled it, but now with the R7 coming along it does make a lot of sense to switch out the S5. It’s a tough one!!! In your two cam interview setup the background is definitely a different colour, whilst the skin tones are very similar. Did you manage to try Clog3 from the C70 and R7 in that setup? I’m guessing it would be a closer match but as always, different sensors just look different even with the same brand.

    great review and killer combo! I have an r7 as a b cam for my c70 and it works a treat at a great price point.. the ibis when combined with rf stabilised lenses also makes it super easy to shoot hand held, very smooth, great for quick B roll shots!

  • @jaymills1720
    @jaymills1720 Před 3 měsíci

    I’d imagine clog3 isn’t the issue - the sensor and processor in the c70 is vastly different than even the r5c. Apparently clog2 also has more noise and the DR between them, within the same camera, isn’t that much more noticeable as per canons writing. Pretty amazing how close it can be for so cheap (r7) - once canon does internal luts I may go that route. Their skin tones are the best. Wish I could get that skin tone *easily* baked into Sony 😊

    I was hoping to get the body only but that’s currently not an option. But your analysis is great because I am looking for a Bcam match for my c70. I’m ready to make it happen. Looking forward to more now as a sub!

    I would love to get the R7 as a B-cam for my C70. The deal killer is the inability to output HDMI while using the LED and recording internally. Often I livestream it via an HEVC encoder, and this basically makes it unworkable for that. Now looking at the FUJI XH-2S which doesn't have such a foolish limit.

    Excellent Josh, as always! So, do you still consider the C70 a great starter for a Director (me) learning cinematography? I wonder if the fact it isn't a full-frame camera is a problem. This was my thinking: if it isn't a problem, I could buy a C70, use a R7 for a limited B Camera, then hire DPs who can use any of the Canon line (C300s, etc.). What do you think? Thanks again for your fine stuff!

      @@Josh_Sattin Thanks Josh! My DP was starting to teach me the C Series, but died unexpectedly. I entered a Digital Marketing program, to learn how to sell my films better, and got way-laid from filming for a while. Now, I need to buy something and start shooting as another cameraman. We always used the Canons, so as long as there isn't an issue with full-frame, I'll just go with the C70. You are very friendly and knowledgeable Josh. Thanks again!

      There are lots of different resolutions, framerates and codecs to shoot in. R7 in 4K24 IPB is 120 Mbps
      C70 in 4K24 Long Gop (similar to IPB) is 160 Mbps, All-I is 410 Mbps

    Stop making a big deal if its an a-cam or b-cam. Just shoot with watcha got. Its literally a-roll thats typically interviews and b-roll to cover stuff up.
