The simpler solution (since screwing the chair to a floor makes it immobile and trashes your floor) is to use a square metal plate as a base (no need to look like a shadow) and conceal the base plate with a small area rug. Two holes in the throw rug with pins protruding to fit into the two chair legs. Now you have a perfect illusion and it can be moved. You're welcome.
In a couple years, we'll get a house tour and it will just be a random assortment of wacky and mismatched one-off furniture builds from all the random things that's given John inspiration
That Bobby Duke shoutout really caught me off guard 😂 absolutely love both this and Bobby's channel! Always great to see Maker's work together
Craftmen appreciating other craftmen is the most wholesome thing.
There’s a different colored wall in between the front legs on the thumbnail
Bruh
I didn’t even notice
And in between the seat and the backrest
Was just about to comment that
Why would you point that out? Now my brain has a not responding
Will you next make a car that magically runs without a motor if someone pushes it? This was a very strange build. If you bolt a chair to the floor it won't move. LIke magic.
He needs jesus to build a car like that
Nikola already did this.
My citroen C2 already does that, using an engine instead of a motor. Just bump start it and it'll go however long its fuel capacity will allow it to!
Related fun fact: Michael Jackson used bolts in his shoes that attached to the floor for the Smooth Criminal lean
Another related fun fact: this also caused him to break an ankle.
You're kinder to your failures than I am to mine. I leave no evidence. They go into the fire of shame every Saturday night at the fire pit with beer and tears😢. Good work brother. Love the videos.
Looks great! Glad you covered up the metal legs with maple that you then stained to look like.... metal. Haha. Love your channel!
I was looking to find this comment...figured someone had to have made it.
This reminds me of MJ's tilt, whose shoe was attached to the stage
Came here to say this!
😮 Mann u know how many times I fell trying that 😭😭
Finally someone know the secret!
Nah fam, at least that required thought and skill to pull off, unlike just bolting a chair on the floor
I'M NOT FEELING THIS SCREWING THE CHAIR INTO THE FLOOR THING. ONCE YOU DO THAT ITS NO LONGER A CHAIR BOUT AN ORNAMENT INSTEAD!
I agree that it's no longer a chair, but I guess it's like a "bench"
Bout?
It is no longer "furniture" it is now a "fixture". As it has been "affixed" to a permanent spot. Just as a kitchen island counter is not furniture, it is a fixture of the home.
He covered the metal chair in wood, then stained the wood and made it look metal 😄
Since when is screwing a chair to the floor interesting
I knew at first glance it was going to be screwed to the floor. So the rest was just a waste of time and material for me. I M O
@@davidkohler7454 I knew at 0:27 that it was screwed to the floor when the chair wobbled. Skimmed the rest of the video :x
@@nglyo I knew it when I saw the thumbnail cuz it's impossible otherwise, even if the legs were made of the heaviest element on earth, and the rest of plywood it wouldn't stand
since when is anything you've ever done interesting?
Since today. Go lay down.
Another good one! Nice to see you pushing the parameters and showing the failures. It’s almost like I’m watching myself 🤔. Well as far as the failure part of designing. Great way to lean through.
Honestly, this is the content I come to YT to find! I'm laughing and learning, what more could anyone ask for!
The sharing of the failure is as valuable as any success!
not when its half the video stupid
@@dannys69 What's stupid is insulting someone who is just making a comment on a YT video. No one has to feel the same way as you about how much of the failure was shown. Please go ask your mom to teach you some manners!
I actually came on your channel because of the Video with the floating table
Thanks Nils !
I fist saw your channel when you built the giant box cutter for Jimmy's blade.. then you giant screwdriver.
lol That isn't John! That is Jackman Works.
That is Paul. I am John: hello Dustin
The relatability of your channel makes it, the super descent mediocre woodworking is cool too
A very simple magic trick with tools and materials!
Your personality makes the videos seem so personal! I love it!!!!
I can already tell he’s gonna have 1 mill subs by the end of the year
Definitely, he is gonna be up there with the big dogs soon. He deserves it.
You are so hilarious and more human than most. I, too, talk to myself and call myself a dumass and worse. That f word is the most used in my day to day life. Never ever change yourself please. Love ya just the way you are 😏😉👍
Gosh, that workshop is the dream
I know this is an OLD video, but filling the front legs with some tungsten shot and adding rockers on the front would be mind-blowing.
SAM, He cant afford you some lighting in the scary basement!!!! LOL!
Definitely need to see a colab between you and Nick Offerman, like ASAP! 🤣
I've always wondered how these work! lol can't wait to find out
I appreciate the turns and tangents so carefully crafted whilst chairs are getting built in the background
Another project well done. Now I wanna see an entire epoxy chair and table set.
i dumped it on the floor this week, so it'll have to wait another week haha
John Malecki sneak peek?
@@John_Malecki Stupid clickbait video. You won't reach 500k subs this way.
Love your vids & humour and honesty on your design ' changes ' ..lol reckon between you and Jimmy D you could put man back on the moon sooner. I'm a convert from the UK. Just subscribed, please keep 'em coming [ but please, don't stain Maple, makes me cry, so hard to come by here in the UK ] Thks
I really appreciate that your projects are just getting more absurd the longer the apocalypse goes on.
I love seeing tooled up and experienced ppl fk up. I don't get so hard on myself afterwards
I love hearing a good “Yinz” on youtube
You could do a similar thing by setting the chair up like Michael Jackson's shoes when when did his 'impossible lean'
I love all the frustrated "fails" along the way!
If I were doing the trick, I'd go with a fake tilted room, inspired by the "fail" chair. Maybe 20 degrees of tilt, and the weight of my butt just goes straight down onto the legs. Only problem ... I live in Louisiana, which is flat as a pancake. Hard to find a convenient slanted place to use.
With the tilted room trick, there's no need for beefy chair legs. It could be an off-the-shelf chair with spindly legs, with the rear legs sawed off.
Lmao. I laughed so hard at the burial scene for the first chair... And the comically small filled-in-hole at the end of the scene was the cherry on top.
its actually can be done without bolting the chair leg.
but the leg must be made of very very high density material tho.
so dense like 1000kg/cm3
Legs of chair must just have pretty big contact area with floor and be just little bit weightier than top part of chair to stay stable on floor - chair from Zach King video have all this. Difference in weight can be easy archived just by making whole chair empty inside and filling it's legs with something like concrete. Basically it's same idea as how foundation of buildings work. if chair can stay stable on floor by itself on two, you can just balance on forward part while sitting. I think, this is how really chair on video was made, not with some "video editing magic"
So basically weight the bottom of the legs with a piece of white dwarf star such that a golf ball sized piece in each leg counteracts several times your bodyweight when you sit on the chair.
Pretty soon people are gonna walk into your house & be to scared to touch anything
GOOD.
this chair was a cake all along!
My favorite work boots right there, timberland pro, grid work, moc soft toe, got half the shop wearing and loving those boots! 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
John. I really enjoyed this. Especially the reveal at the end. Glad to see you using your plasma cutter. It’s been one of my favorite tools in the shop. Glad to see you and the team are staying healthy. See you soon.
I got a notification of this video but it's not on your channel but glad I finally found it
i am glad you're here !
@@John_Malecki it's nice to see that you are Active in the comments, this was a great video cant wait to see the next one
8:00 “I don’t understand, I already cut it three times and it’s still too short...” :) :)
A CZcams that cares for us
I’m obsessed with this chair. Love the mix of wood and metal. 😍😍
I discovered last year my love of woodworking and I’m so tempted to try some of these projects.
Well I knew how it worked from the start lol. If you're going to do that, why not just make a base plate under the floor. Then it can be used as a real chair by everyone....
We tried, it was still too weak in the bolt threads. i'll revisit it soon
John Malecki Couldnt you just weld the steel baseplate to it? I’ve seen chairs that had similar designs, they weren’t made to look like a shadow, it was just more steel bars but there were no back legs to it.
I was a bit disappointed to find out the other guy just edited the base out, at that point might as well just use a regular chair and edit out the legs
@@mcearl8073 but that would look rubbish lol, baseplate under the floorboards (extending out in front of the chair ftw)
:)
@@John_Malecki Awesome, I look forward to it :) I know nothing about woodwork but I really enjoy watching you work
@@John_Malecki How about, no.
Otherwise known as "The Michael Jackson Trick"
The floating table brought my attention to your channel. You burying the failed "chair" earned my sub.
You're amazing man ,carpenter my whole life and still manage to learn something new on every video you post,,thanks for the constant inspiration!
This was awful, thank goodness I skipped to the end real fast. Unless you're interested in the workshop process beware, it ends in them drilling an ugly chair to the floor and it's incredibly flimsy and unsatisfying.
Was looking for a comment like this to make sure i didn't have to post it. Thank you for saving me time
Thank you , you just saved me 15 min of my life well 14 bc it took me 1 min the write this lol
You the real mvp
Thats kinda the point, the guys personality and the workshoppi g is probably why most people r here
I love this ass-clownery. I hope you didnt really throw that first attempt away you can still make a viable chair out of it.
Noticed you switched out the Bosch glide miter saw for the makita. Any particular reason ? I’m torn between the two right now On which to put in my shop.
Dude I want your shop! So much space and so many tools.
6:24 Common sense took over :)
When the saw retracts it is like "damn, I'll get those fingers next time"
8:20 What, popcorn in the Pittsburgh Woodcraft ! Hey, Charlotte Woodcraft. -You need to get your sh*t together A-S-A-P.
Covers black metal with black stained wood lol love it!!
Love it. Please, give us some more of this stuff.
It's l fake
"Yins." Gotta be Pittsburgh :)
I'm trying to build a woodworking bench
Got to love the Ron Swanson/Nick Offerman photo 👍🏼👌🏽
It'd take a pretty gnarly amount of weight, but you could totally make a freestanding 2 legged chair.
The suspended table was pretty cool. This is a cheap trick.
"Ah, sweet, I found the hole."
That’s what he said.
Realy good build. I think you should build a table with two legs or less. with epoxy to.
I'm a realy big fan. please show more projects.
I love woodcraft, different cities but still awesome
20 minutes of my life I’ll never get back.
Sad reality ☹️
you dont even trust on the chair, you're sitting in the edge 😏
I think i say that verbatim haha
It’s a version of a really old busker trick. Glad I flicked through.
That Diamondback covers shirt, let’s goo!
Why is everyone so mad he made a impossible chair and he showed 2 other designs that work pretty well plus, it’s called a impossible chair for a reason.
When I saw the thumbnail I thought I was drunk
Are you sure i wasnt drunk ?
John Malecki next video, drunk chair build?
Hey hey! My husband and I stumbled upon one of your videos this evening, and you have definitely caught our attention! My husband says your a "wood Yoda" lol!! Your work is incredible, you have impeccable patience, (especially when things don't go quite as planned), and a great sense of humor to bat! Look forward to seeing future projects as well as maybe learning a thing or two from ya! We love woodworking, working with our hands and finding new challenges. So thanks for being an inspiration and for doing what you do... You rock. Take care and have fun playing with your wood!
As a woodworker, i find the last statement of your comment very kinky, i do apologize too!
I love ur videos and finished a fishing rod holder today
I’m trying to build a tensegrity table
How is it going ?
Check out Robby Cuthbert Design here on CZcams.
This is my next project
I want to make a stool to sit on, and I want the tension to be held by an elastic thread (so the stool is bouncy) :)
(Yes I know the tension will need to be adjusted for each person, this will be *my* stool)
Love your videos, keep it up!
@@6sicSIX forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't half of the portmanteau of tensegrity tension?
TL;DR: flexibility is bad for tensegrity.
Essentially what I mean is that if you look at John's table. Or a a lot of other tensegrity builds it works so that you have a central point that pulls downwards but due to the cable it has to rotate its axis to do so. Then it also has outer cables that get pulled upwards when the upper piece tries to rotate its axis.
If you tried to make something like this with any noticeable amount of flexibility you lose tension in one direction i.e if the central point can flex downwards then the outer points lose their tension allowing the piece to rotate and fall. But if you allow the outer cables to flex then you again have the same problem as adding any reasonable amount of weight would extend the outer cables, once again allowing the piece to fall.
I just want to say its currently 12:40 am and I'm not the most advanced tensegrity builder, having only made a few sculptures so I may be entirely wrong, or oblivious to an obvious fix.
the fact that you dont have at least a million subs is genuinely upsetting because the quality of your content is 11/10. thank you for being awesome and building awesome things
Love be the lyrics at 8:44-8:51 lol.
You’ve got yourself a record deal lol.
I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one that basically finishes something to then realize that it’s not right just to have to redo it a couple more times lol.
Awesomeness from the guy with all the gear and no idea. Love your work mate
In the future, when archaeologists dig up that failed chair, they will rethink their history books that what happened must have been done by a Neanderthal
Clickbait. It’s bolted to the floor. Just so people don’t waste their time.
But that's why I'm here. To waist my time
Also the title literally says “how it works” so he’s gonna say at some point
Also as stated he made the vid to make people think
cant be clickbait if it never promised anything and didnt deliver. Title said 2 legged chair is impossable, which is it without cheating aka bolting to the floor, which guess what? it is
Dont be a stupid hero dummy🤣
Thank you
It's really cool to know that there is a content creator with 300k subs living about 25 miles from you
Hopefully its more than that soon!
As a starving, disabled carpenter, as much I love your show it kills me to see you scrap all of those live edges (and didn't have to lmao!) Then to bury that beautiful chair frame! I make myself go to Woodcraft about an hour before they close so I don't over spend and stick to the drop bins! Make me a fair offer and I'll gladly figure out a way to take your drops off your hands!! I see myself building one of your chairs using Chemtec epoxy for the back legs. I figured you were going to pour them!!
Is it weird that this guy sort of sounds like Tony Stark and he does sorts of building?
True ! 🤔

Should be titled: How To Waste Materials and Not Build A Chair
The Magician's Guild will be contacting you, soon.
And I see the lack of proper quantities of pork products has impaired your cognitive abilities.
Send the pork.... thanks . Johns cholesterol
John's GP hates you, his future Cardiac Surgeon however, loves you since what he's going to eventually Bill John for will send his Grandkids to Medical School...
@John Malecki Well done John. I liked this. As an engineer, woodworker, and former magician who built my own props, I would like to share a fun idea with you. If you wanted to stage this and fool people quickly. Do it in a room that you can lay down plywood in. Get a some 1/2" tongue and groove wood flooring. Pre-assemble a good number of planks that span the area your chair will cover, and glue and clamp them together. Then nail them to a cutout plywood underlayment, cut to fit the outline of the planks. When dry, bolt your chair to the planks from the underside. If you use thick plywood you can probably set the head flush with the bottom. Pre-assemble other planks on other plywood in large sections, but not so large that you can't carry them into the room. Cut their outlines to fit in with the first shape that has the chair, cutting off the tongues anywhere they meet. Then just carry in the big sections into a room and lay them down like a big jigsaw puzzle, with the special chair one in the middle. If you use a large bolt, the chair and its support could hold any sized guy. You could pull this as a prank on a friend. Convince them to let you lay a wood floor with some "leftover wood from a previous job". Then go in and lay down the planks, kick back and wait a while, making hammering noises periodically. Then call them in while sitting in the chair. After you get up, they will undoubtedly want to see the chair. It will be an even bigger surprise when they realize it won't move! I think this would make a great video!
If i didn't know any better i'd say you're a true bred pittsburgher with that yinz at the beginning. Love the videos. Always entertaining. Thanks for the content!
Thanks for the video!
12:45 I love that you mentioned that you’re a Bobby Duke fan!!
Wood or metal legs with a plexiglass base and clear epoxy seat would look sweet. Great project, and thanks for sharing mess ups and failed projects here! Love it
Yeah it's refreshing to watch someone with this kind of a crazy workshop to make mistakes. I didn't even realize he has another metal fabricating shop lol, this guy has literally everything.
In a few years you'll have a beautiful furniture tree where you buried that maple.
Should have used a threaded rod from the top of the frontlegs all the way through the floor. Would have made it alot sturdier for you to sit in :)
Best video yet. Love the carefree yet professional attitude of the channel and the gentlemen who keep it going.
Pretty fantastic work, John! Looks amazing! 😃
Stay safe there! 🖖😊
Simple. The front legs are made out of neutronium. That keeps the center of balance over the mass. Being as a teaspoon of neutronium weighs about 10 tons. Side note: the chair has its own gravity field too.
I want to thank you for your super fun and educational videos. I especially love that you also show the wrong ones. I really enjoy it. Keep it up!! greetings from the Netherlands.
When you hit 300K subscribers WE need a very special epoxy, wood, metal, ect, video build evolving around that number!
