I bought another Toyota MR2 Turbo, and this one might be even worse than my first one. Here's how I'm going to use it to make one awesome Midship Runabout. Thanks to AutoTempest for sponsoring this video!

Damn, you're almost as bad as Hoovie.
jospi2 this guy us worse
Atleast hoovie do take care of his cars
@@Kxider
Hoovie pays a Wizard... The Wizard takes care of his cars.
Of all the hardest parts you’ve mentioned you still missed one of the rarest of all for that car: CUPHOLDERS. I had to order mine from Japan because, unless I’m mistaken, cupholders were not an option in the North America models ever. Pick up a cup holder For your project car and then you will have something truly rare
Roger they are pretty easy to find in MR2 groups. I see them all the time.
Quentin Durrstein , I have not looked on the forums myself. When I got the cupholders for my MR2 I had to keep my eyes open on eBay to find a JDM OE Cup holder. On the forums, because I don’t need to go on the form now and look, are they the ones that fit underneath the stereo in the same location as the little pop out change tray
Roger Yup, same ones.
Quentin Durrstein any links to it? I have having to put my drinks behind my seat
I see them once or twice a month. Usually on this group.

Given the cost of the Rarity of the rear spoiler would it not be worth it to take it off and repair it?
Can anyone confirm he's actually finished a project? 😂😂
Rick Edmondson exactly why I stopped watching
Apparently you are still watching....
ck m 😂😂😂 Cant even make a comeback
He sort of "finished" the Mustang for racing against the guy from B is For Build...
Samuel Avery-Quinn he sold it shortly after
Given the fact that your MR2 project car has a questionable engine bay would it not make sense to do a complete cradle swap between them just drop it swap it and transfer whatever else you need for the engine bay to ensure maximum functionality?
Nice smooth segway into the ad placement there! Oh, and go with the manual steering man. noticeably better feel, and there's no weight up there, so even when stopped, the steering is not too heavy.
bliglum It’s spelled “segue,” fool.
Arrgh, yes! A segway is that 2 wheeler thing! Thanks
Did it come with the standard Canadian market feature “salt/snow induced rust”?
Notice Tavarish's acting is getting better? I would like to give the Oscar to the "test drive" side shot of the Aston during the A/C problem.
I highly recommend saving the engine and trans, and doing a rebuild on them. especially after seeing the oil that came out of the other MR2 engine... a little honing of the cylinder walls, some new rings, and possibly a few choice upgrades this could be a BEAST.
Yo Tavarish, take the strut braces/x-brace in the engine bay and the frunk from this car and put it on the black one. I know the black one has an aftermarket strut brace, but that one has bolts, so it's gonna flex no matter what. The X in the engine bay is just straight metal that bolts to the struts, it's gonna be way more rigid.
Also don't forget about the broken/rusty/badly repaired front subframe+mounts in the black car and the leaking stuff... You're gonna need a bunch of parts off this drivetrain!!
Tavarish be the type of guy to buy two MR2s AND NOT TELL HIS FRIENDS ABOUT IT UNTIL THE DAY OF REVEAL. Psh. This is some BS!
The MR2 should be really fun once it's done. I can't wait till it is!
For ABS you would need to put the sensors at each wheel, and the circular magnet thing on the hub. Unless the wiring is already there as part of the OEM harness you’ll also have to run wires to there.
The hate on here is unreal. Who cares what he does with his channel, its his. At the end of the day he's doing a lot better in life than most of you and doing what he loves. Its not like you all are paid subscribers its free to air so like it or not don't trash another mans work. @tavarish you the man keep it up!!
How can we judge u bro? That enthusiastic vibe u got shows authentic happiness do ur thing 👍
As long as the frame rails aren't bent that rear can be fixed, just got to be handy with a grinder, a drill and a welder and you can fit a whole new rear end to it :p
So, I almost didn't click on this video because I have been getting tired of just watching youtubers buy new cars, but this was a cool video about a parts car.
I've owned 2 1991 mr2 sw turbo 2.0 stock factory. One of which i wrecked simular to this one, these cars are heavy in the rear and need to be respected when in turns, they are known for whipping in turns
The box in the middle of the car is stock in every mr2, also the turbo brakes are bigger, but if you switch them you'll need to take the brake booster and correct the brake lines to the abs module. Other than that, for the power windows you can take the inner wiringloom
There were some options, and deletes. The rear wing was technically an option, yet it was hard to find one without it (and it was ugly, too!). Power windows were an option, not sure if power mirrors were (they were an option in the 1st Gen). Same with Turbos and sunroof/hardtops... something like only 13 made in '93. Believe you could delete the fog-lights from a Turbo, yet you had to special-order it. There were some stripper-models special-ordered for SCCA racing... manual trans, manual windows, manual steering, manual brakes (no ABS), hardtop (prefer sunroof!), cloth, no rear storage bin, etc, yet they are collectible now.
The front brake calipers are 2 piston on the turbo and single piston in the non-turbo. The surface area of the pads is not significantly larger on the turbo cars. A lot of non-turbo guys used to spend money for the "upgrade" in the 90s and 00s when these cars were less rare. It's wasn't worth it then but since you have the parts car already then why not.
turbo brake caliper are 2 pistons same rotor (turbo and N/A ) for the zenki (early year), different caliper and rotor size for the kouki (late year), ALL NA brake the same
Fix the red one trash the black one.... you will have a more valuable car on your hands
The red one might be a salvage title too which would hurt any value increase. Plus the black one he could do most of it himself, the red one he’d definitely need some outside help
broken fiberglass trunk wing is easily repaired with resin & fiber mat.
The calipers on the turbo are bigger 2 pot compared to the single pot on the NA. Also the disk diameters are different so its more practical to just swap the hubs.
I wonder what all youtubers do to avoid crazy neighbors with so many cars lol. My neighbors see me doing an oil change or my friends come over to work on cars and they call the township 😂😂
I think he keeps buying cars because he doesn’t actually know how to fix them so if he doesn’t keep buying cars to keep people interested he doesn’t have a you tube channel 😂
Sean Enright that's fucking true
@Tavarish
You should left all rubber seals for windows, t-top, trunk lid from salvage car. They are not available/not produced.
If it were my car I would keep it lightweight. Manual steering, no ABS, roll up windows, and since you're in Florida delete all the emissions equip. Also makes the build much easier.
Yes turbo brakes are an upgrade to the NA cars. Take the brake booster as well makes the brake pedal feel allot better. Gauge cluster will swap right into the NA and will all function as long as the NA car has the turbo body harness. which is an easy swap. starts at the drivers kick panel to the fuse block. The power windows are going to be tricky cause if you want them to work like stock you have to take the dash harness out and swap that too.
That Dumb and Dumber edit was pure gold 😂😂
Is it a factory LSD model?
unfortunately it isn't :(
Don't do drugs. Deal them.
Need the get the 93 and up for the LSD.
Sarah do you wanna go Barbie shopping
Bmw M3 e46 as long as we can stop by the jokes store after, cause you’re fresh out.
Hey!..saving some cash buying in Canada!, noticed a lot of cars are cheaper here in Canada, especially with the US dollar worth about 30% more, also to swap out the dash just get onto the highway with a friend and have him cruise to 100km/h and manually move your speedo needle to 100 and it’s now calibrated (that’s how I did it)
Lmfao the beginning caught me so off guard 😂😂😂 well played sir
When you change over the injectors, i would swap all 4 of them because they are matched together so all cylinders get the same amount of Gas
when you tried putting into reverse, I lost my shit pmsl 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Bring this one to a good frame shop and get it fixed up, use the black one for parts. It's amazing what those places can do.
I don't know why but i love transplanting parts from one car to another
Especially bolt on parts :D
make the chassis on the other mr
2 look good and then swap everything to it from the red mr2
that's not happening.
Manual steering for the WIN!! Also, I hope you install a real boost gauge instead of relying on the OEM "boost" gauge. If it does not read correctly in vacuum as well as PSI, it does not make it a real boost gauge. Or, you could go really fancy and buy an aircraft boost gauge that reads in just inHg, better known as inches of Mercury. I personally prefer the aircraft way of things, but those can hard to find and expensive....
If you are going to do a swap do a 1MZ/3MZ-FE that V6 will sound glorious. See if you can find a TRD supercharger for it too. Rebuild it they are rare and expensive but you are looking at about 240 wheel horsepower. Just enough to make that thing float like a butterfly.
Check that the non-airbag steering wheel isn't a Momo with a pad over the center. Early UK and Japanese specification MX-5's did this.
Dude, you have made so much improvement in your videos since you started. Keep it up!
I honestly can't figure what you want that MR-2 for, but hey, different strokes bro! NICE score on the wheels, leave yer airbag in, swap to the manual steering, strip and dump it. Dude, you don't have enough garage space for everything!!! Maybe your MR-2 would make a quick little street terror, just for quick zippin' at night. But you ARE getting a little overloaded on projects, just sayin'.....................
Not sure about the exact power steering issue the black one has, but there's a thread out there about a quick and easy fix. IIRC there's some relay that wears out over the life of the car, and something about cycling the key a bunch of times fixes it. My friend has a 93 and claims this fix worked for him. Said it was a relatively common issue.
You look like you live in a pretty decent neighborhood, I know its the deep south but jesus your drive way has to be an eyesore. Please finish this one. Its got potential.
Good God my dude, you are the gift that keeps on giving.
I’ve seen worse go back on the road weirdly enough. You’d be astonished what a thick bike-lock, sheet of wood, rubber mallet and a little leverage can accomplish.. definitely a car that can easily be saved if it had replacement crash beams fitted
Still waiting on cinematic reveal of merc
Pay shipping, and you got a white spoiler and the side pieces in great shape. Also have the 91 spec taillights. Genuinely
FYI the only reason I'm ridding myself of them is that my 91 has a 94 appearance package now, and I'm quickly running out of room for spare parts >.
People need to subscribe to you! Such a genuine dude! 👌
I had issues with my electric power steering pump before and found out it was the solenoid for the pump. It seems like a common issue.
dude you should do a complete swap! engine and all! give the car a fresh start!
Turbo brakes are a HUGE upgrade, but you need both the calipers AND the discs, NA discs don't fit in Turbo calipers.
Also, I would love to get a hold of that engine, gearbox, axles and rear hubs (to make an NA of mine into a Turbo :D ).
Harness and ECU would be good too :D
Just a thought. you might be better off fixing the body on the parts car, swapping over the A/C system, and hit the road. A lot less mechanical labor involved. You just have to swing some kind of deal for the bodywork and paint. Sell off one or two of your cars to fund it - you know you need to do that anyway.
Tried searching for a 2g dsm gsx got no results back. What fucking treasure that car is now. Them were my high school days though. All my friends were jelly of me.
Buying cars is the best part of any project tbh. Hope the new one is as useful as you hope!
5$ says its the pilot bearing in the transmission. my miata had that inability to shift issue and it was because the pilot baring went out (exploded some how) and seized up. You couldnt disengage the engine from the transmission with the clutch, so you couldnt shift into any gears.
He's made the MR-2 great again
FN01R-C's are the cast version, they are cheaper than the forged FN01R's. Should be able to find those used for a reasonable price.
Full engine swap but keep ur existing trans, I'm keen to see the final results I've always wanted to do a mr2 project.
Tavarish - the only guy who gets a parts car for his parts car
Maaan i wish you started working on the mr2s right away in this video... cant wait!
I would rebuild this one since it is a REAL turbo car, and use the other one for parts.... :)
You and Hoovie's Garage are in a race to see who gets carried away by the white coats first and carted off to the looney bin
I'd recommend against fitting the ABS system. I know people who actually remove the ABS system in their MR2 because it was pretty primitive at the time, and with practice you can actually get better breaking without it. Good luck man!
The MR2 was a 3-channel system, the rears worked together, the front independently. Also had terrible rumble/skip activation... if you had wavy road near a stop sign/light, with about a 4" sine wave, the ABS would activate, and you'd go through the light. Thought of doing the removal process, yet there's lots to take out, some re-piping in the front, and lots of wiring to take out.
Heat rises so they thought of u put the fans pushing out it would take out the heat from the engine bay. Dont know if it would work but maybe thats why they put the fans that way
Have you looked into the gas strut you can use for the engine bay hood (and/or frunk and trunk?) I'd love to see an install video.
you and hoovie should do a head-to-head buy the cheapest showdown. Same make/model, who can get it cheapest.
I can't wait for the next video on your MR2 build, I actually have a black turbo MR2 that I'm trying to bring back to life and a crashed red MR2 turbo that I almost died in both parked in my garage. I'm interested in some interior parts, I will be contacting you soon by email. Keep up the good work, by the way, I think the N/A and Turbo rear brake calipers are the same, but the bracket are different to fit a bigger disc, don't quote me on that.
"I'm only gonna use a few pieces"... Yes just the wheels, brakes callipers, some interior parts, the engine lid, the abs, the tire and the manual rack :p
You maybe should keep it, knowing that you have everything you can one day miss on this one :)
To be fair - the red one is in better condition than the black one. I think I'd be tempted to rebuild the red one and use the black for parts, or scrap metal.
Looking forward to this project. You may be able to salvage that rear wing with loads of fiberglass repair of course
literally subscribed to u like 2 days ago and I literally watch you on youtube like its Netflix cuz ur videos r pretty dope.
Tavarish, i was going to tell that this one is in better condition than the other, but then came the holy shit part. Wow. But, basically you would have to take out everything from the other car to put in all the mechanics and interior trims from this. What an entreprise you have before you. Good luck.
Looks like you could likely fibreglass the spoiler back to ship shape, not a hard thing to do
an omori boost gauge will fit in the stock spot, even looks factory but is actually usefull
My mr2 turbo had different wheel hubs than an N/A mr2 because the turbo ones had ABS, not sure if that's just for aussie cars but.
I hear you on the a/c, daily drove my mr2 in central FL for 8 years without it. Utter misery, even with the t-tops off
The fiberglass spoiler can be repaired just like b is for build repaired fiberglass panels for his lotus
The body shop is right, its perfectly fix-able. Actually not that hard to do, would have to get the frame checked for true'ness then just sheet metal replacement.
The parts car was a good find! I'll be interested to see how much trouble you have retrofitting the ABS. Also, have you investigated the possibility of swapping the master cylinder from a Tacoma to increase the brake feel? It's a cheap and easy upgrade.
I agree with the others keep the transmission and axles and hubs at least, even if it's not lsd they are getting harder to find and expensive. You will kick yourself if you get rid of it especially if your swap car has a s54 transmission. If you don't need it at least sell it for its worth.
The middle back storage thingy wasn't a turbo only, I have a 93 NA and have it.
I'll buy it from you. Deadass. Soon as you're done getting everything off it.
The clutch thing is probably just the throwout bearing.
Source : Mine blew up and does the same thing.
Your most expensive part is the lsd e153 gearbox, which can hold 700hp + axels and hubs....
It's not the LSD model.
Note even the red one?
Yes he said it in the comments, shame really as I had one myself and loved it.
The use of the term "retrofit" for a bolt in part is crazy lol
Tavarish it is fixable its called jd welding a so-so(saw) and a welder with a junkyard at your disposal
You need to do another mr2 build please cause these things are getting rare and people on CZcams it’s like oh yeah I paid $500 bucks for it, it’s like how.
The pressure plate on that car is bad that is why its not going into gear. The gearbox is fine it maybe a good idea if you keep that gearbox but replace the gearoil.. Amsoil 80w-90 or royal purple
The turbo brakes on the 91-92 are a bit better than the 91-95 na but the ideal upgrade is usual to the 93-95 turbo brakes.
Did not put on lift. I am disapoint.
Willing to bet, despite obvious body damage, the frame is in better shape than the other car.
mennn we need more videos like this. i love it
The brake calipers and rotors are the same size, the turbo has dual piston vs the n/a has single piston.
if you are selling the little red light cover on the bottom of the doors i would be interested in buying them especially the driver side one.
You should swap the subframe too. Nice find.
"WITH A GOOD 5 SPEED MANUAL" HAHAHAHAHAHAAHA DID YOU HEAR WHAT YOU JUST DID TO REVERSE?!
That rear wing is fiberglass like you said so repair it, it's just layering mat & redo.
Tavaris, what are your plans with the car when its done? Track? Stock? In between? If you want to have a track ready car id use the manual rack and the manual windows, lots of weight saved there.
fix the MR2 Turbo with parts from the non turbo!!
