  • Greek and Roman statues haven't always had that glazed look in their eyes-many were once painted.

Nat Geo: You say the statues were painted --- and then you DON'T show it?!? What's up with that?

It's kind of a bummer that they were painted. Unless they were painted with great detail, I think the plain statues look way better. The painted versions just look tacky and mass-produced. I guess ancient peoples had no concept of "mass-produced" though.

I agree. The plain statues had 1500 years to develop their own rep and now we associate the plain carvings with great art. Also, the bronze statues weren't painted so there is an aesthetic tradition to plain statues.

I get your sentiment, but some statues WERE essentially mass-produced. To my knowledge, statues of Roman emperors, beginning with Augustus, were placed in cities around the Empire as a form of promotion/propaganda for the emperor, who would be depicted as idealized but individualized. So...maybe the tackiness is actually pretty apt!

The best thing about them being painted is the evidence it provides about what the emperors really looked like

All interesting info. Thank you. I guess I specifically meant excessively mass produced cheap stuff didn't exist to effect opinions on how "authentic" things look. But even then, I didn't know of copies being made to spread around.
