    Thank you for uploading this video.
    I watched Carol Kaye the bass player. I liked her melodic approach. She plays chord tones. I want to know this route it is more musical. I think players can rely heavily on scales but this approach for myself does not give me the musical results. I like to play more melodic and musical. Chord tones nails it for me. I would say you need to know intervals. So with intervals and chord tones the playing will be more musical. Hopefully this is correct?

    As a blues, funk, and rock guitarist--what do you think of Grant Green? From your jazz playing, I think you dig Grant Green--but I could be wrong. People got it all wrong. They think, "oh, that's jazz. You can't play a pentatonic. You can't bend notes. You gotta play all those advanced scales". The master of pentatonics just died. RIP, Mr. Jazz Piano Man McCoy Tyner. Bending notes? Horn players do that all the time, from Louis Armstrong to John Coltrane. You can play blues without jazz, but you can't play jazz without the blues. End of the day, you are playing sounds. I keep getting into arguments against playing strict shapes. If there is any shape, it's the shape of a series of notes--like a melodic shape. Don't get trapped in physical shapes on the neck.

      He is playing a piece he wrote called "Solo Guitar Etude". If you search CZcams for it you will hear him play it at full speed.
      I believe his point of showing it in this context is that it is more important to target chord tones than it is for your transitional notes to exist within a scale or key.
      I think the sub-point is that basic triads are the foundation of a lot of interesting, complex music.

  • @ArielBenichou
    @ArielBenichou Před 4 lety +4

    If I understood correctly, the 3 levels are:
    1. Play the CHORDS in tempo.
    2. Play the TRIADS in tempo.
    3. Play the ROOT & THIRD in tempo.

      Good question and there is a great reason for that,

      Better to understand more things like triads, intervals, Ear Training, theory,...
      but if you only have amazing theory knowledge = not make you a great improvisor!!
