Tomo was one of my teachers when I went to Berklee, and he was also John Mayer's teacher when he was at Berklee! There is a cool little story at 6:08 where Tomo said he actually recommended John to leave Berklee and pursue his songwriting career-I guess it was pretty good advice. Make sure to follow Tomo on Instagram and check out his Guitar Wisdom lesson series (links in the description).
Music is Win what an experience to follow a living legend
I didn’t ever realize you where a Berkley student. That was possibly because knowing your background stories and achievements was never as important to me as the the execution of the art. So consider that, I didn’t follow or subscribe to you because of you going to a certain gig. Or because of who or where you learned to work your instrument better. I subscribed to you because I liked how your imperfections make you who you are. And I like to learn from people like you and tomo. If it was perfect it would have sounded like is was robotic or digital. Like a keyboard playing “Electronic Guitar”. And as you know the guitar is an imperfect instrument to begin with. As Perfection is something we all strive to achieve, however it’s also something that wouldn’t sound as good as close to perfection does. (The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.) We actually subconsciously look for imperfections and how or why they eventually come forth in the way that they do. So in my personal opinion your actually a good player in your OWN right. And that’s why I learn from you. It Because I choose to. Not because of your achievements. However on that note I also want to thank you. I actually really appreciate the knowledge being passed on to a poor guy like myself. And believe me I’m hungry for that knowledge. Even if I can’t pay for it. I’ve been playing for years on my own. And I didn’t get to far. But I’ve been hungry for a long time. I just didn’t realize I was getting 2nd hand burkley lessons 😱. So Thank you again. 👍🏻✌🏻🤙🏻✊🏻👏🏻 your awesome for actually letting me learn. A poor city boy with his cheap guitar. Dude your awesome. ✊🏻
Great video as always Tyler, the gift that Berkley gave you is priceless I am sure. I wish I had been smart at a younger age to go to music school, I would not be struggling with it now. :)
@Moe Howard *Boston 🙂
@Moe Howard Thanks Moe, I thought it was like the Berkley fishing line, and thanks for local. :)
Its not john's teacher ! Its the legendary Tomo as himself
tomer107 facts
Damn right! Tomo Fujita is a big name already.
It should be "Hanging out with Tomo (John Mayer guitar teacher)" instead
נכון תומר מסכים
Is he legendary? I haven't heard of him til now
Wow!! Thanks so much Tyler for posting this video! That was so much fun hanging!!
Shit man you really good
😂 I was just asking you on your own channel if you were Tyler’s teacher 😂
@@zackhayes1268 Thanks! I always reply everyone! I missed yours?
TomoFujitaMusic no you replied :) lol I was just saying it’s funny I recently asked you like a week ago and now you are doing a video together

Wow!! A lot of views!! Thanks everyone!!
Thank you
No, Thank you!
@@FishNChips no thank you
Tomo you have shaped so many gutiar players into the best you deserve more and all the best in the future 🤘🎸
You my man are an absolute guitar mastermind.
The way Tomo plays is so...dynamic, in both timing and tone.
It almost sound a bit simple, but if try to do this, you'll quickly find out how incredibly difficult it is.
Playing soft but clean/precise and spacing notes with perfect bending and vibrato, with his swing, its waaay harder than you think.
Thanks!
Tomo makes it sound so clean, you can’t even hear him picking at all the notes just come out of thin air
Max check out his song titled Kyoto
@@ninjamagz my favorite
Thank you!!
neil_magan just checked it out, it’s magic! thank you for the suggestion
The idea that Tomo is not completely happy with his tempo is just crazy. The guy has one of the best right hand techniques I've ever seen on rythm guitar. Tomo really embodies the spirit of shokunin. He's a craftsman of guitar playing.
Holy crap, Tomo's rhythm comping sounds better than most people playing lead lines.
It’s better than most people in general.
Tomo’s such a great guy and terrific musician! I’ve asked him a lot of random questions about gear or jazz theory or what have you, and he always takes the time to answer them.
Eric Brewer Guitar ikr I’ve commented probably 20 times before my questions on his playing and he always helps, seems like a great dude. His knowledge is extraordinary
Thanks for your kind words!!
@@TomoFujitaMusic hahahah thanks for your time
He goes from having this very accented english to saying “blues” and sounding like a complete native new yorker to all of a sudden back to
the accent lmao
It's probably the word in English he says the most hahahaha
00:07 - 00:27
Now I finally know where John got that type of solo-rhythm-mix which he always plays in his Instagram live videos. Beautiful!
Alexander Supertramp duh, noob.
Thought you said 00:07-00:07 at first had to double take lol
We would love to see you feature Lil Wayne's guitar teacher.
Mike Tyson's schedule is all filled up.
Bwahahaha
Be there next week. Only person i taught worse than Wayne was myself
Wait... he had a teacher?
His teacher was an infant with a broken hand...
This is so wholesome to watch. I don’t know why. Maybe because I admire both of you so much.
I was smiling this whole video, so much during this video and didn’t even realize till I caught my reflection in the phone screen. Great stuff! Loved this laidback jam feel, and how can you not mention feel when your with tomo! My goodness is he awesome! It was cool to see a video of you guys jamming and just talking guitar. Great vid!
that jam in the middle was great honestly
The restraint in Slower playing really builds the tension, and to my ears Tomo seems like a master at this! Great video!
Fujita a legend!!🙏🏻✌🏻
Here you are 🙌
3:55 I've been trying for a while to get that and seeing someone else do it beside Tomo makes me happy
This video alone really makes me envious and happy that the career you have a musician is really paying off and strong my friend! Amazing content creator you are! Awesome work here!
Tomo embodies the brilliance and intellect that goes into playing the blues. A great teacher and listener. Respect!
Thank you!
It's always fun to watch Tomo playing and explaining!
This video is gold. Sensei Tomo is playing flawless as usual. Listening his guitar is just like to drink a well brewed coffee.
My high school music teacher was a former guitar professor at Berklee. Much like Tomo he wasn’t a shred god. I could out shred my teacher, but damn he was full of knowledge. A literal walking music theory encyclopedia; and even though he wasn’t the fastest player he blew me away with how few notes he had to play to out perform me. I guess I’m trying to say that having a dynamic style is more impressive than being a shred monster. Music theory kicks ass!
What a pleasant way for me to spend a few moments listening to the two of you jam!!!
Just waiting to see
"I JUST JAMMED WITH JOHN MAYER"

Tomo is the coolest guy on the internet and such a great guitar player. Thx for sharing this.
So cool to watch you admire the playing of someone. I love the idea of a conversation while playing. Very insightful. Thanks.
Master. Love Tomo´s playing and of course he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the fret and music.
Legend...
I really enjoyed this. Awesome to see two great musicians build off each other. I like what you said about jamming without a backing track and learn rythm instead. Good lesson!!
That bend came straight from heaven 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Good stuff man! Amazing dynamics but yet seems soo simple once you guys broke it down. Thanks for that, good take away! Rock on!!
I knew I liked your style for a reason. You made Tomo smile a few times at your playing. You must be stoked!
🤟😎🤟
Tomo is such a great teacher. I'm so sorry about the family tragedy involving his eldest son.
this honestly makes me so happy
Tomo reminds me of a mix between a young EVH and an older Jimmy Page.
Lol
Don't forget Jackie Chan lol
@@maxkax9241 haha

That part in the beginning blew my mind man wow
The great Tomo Fujita! If you want to be the best, you have to be surrounded by the best.
Awesome guitar "feel" being demonstrated here. Thanks for this video!
That squier sounds amazing. Wow, great playing guys.
About a week ago I was made aware of Tomo and now you’re featuring him on your channel. Matrix.
Listening to you two is magical.

Easily my favorite vid of yours so far! Thank you for introducing this guitarist!! I feel like what ever availability this gentleman had prior to this is absolutely gone now 8^)
What a cool guy and probably the best teacher I know. Cheers Tomo
Tomo is such great man, thanks
Mr Fujita's voice & guitar sounds so similar ( so gentle 🎸😊) Truely a great person... Thanx bro for this video👍
Thanks!
tomo seems to be such a nice person to hang out and take a beer or something like
He is as legendary as they come. Such a beast.
I had the same reaction you did when I heard that one bend early in the vid. Masterful phrasing.
You are very genuine person and guitar sir
I found Tomo 3 days ago on you tube and I am so glad.
This was great. Thank you
Bro, you broke my mind for a second. I'm subscribed to Tomo and thought you were a student of his that looked like you!! hahahaha
AND ITS ALSO COMPLICATED BY THE FACT YOU'RE USING A SQUIER
Tomo!!!! Hope to see you again at NAMM this year.
A Legendary Jam Sesh

Great to see you playing a squire
Tomo...you are amazing
Incredible Tomo!🚀
Tomo you've won a follower, great tone and style and BTW great guitar
Thanks!
The jam was absolutely beautiful
I really agree with the people in comment section that you rename the title to Tomo Fujita instead of John Mayer’s teacher. Just my two cents.
Well, he wrote both... lol
Wow amazing licks
Tomo is on another level.
Tomo is such a humble person .
THE DUET WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR
Love seeing the Squier in your hands!
Boo noooo. At least a real strat!
@@TheBozoleum I have a 1982 fender squire from Japan and it plays better than any strat I have.
ACDC267 80’s squires are amazing
ACDC267 - so do I, an Olympic White fat head. I need to get that out, it’s been a while.
ACDC267 amen to that. i have a custom body 86 squier from japan and it’s amazing.
Wow... I just learned so much in this 9 minute video.. his playing is so smooth and simple and tasty! 🤯
My fave video yet. 🎸🎸
Great video
Dude I love to see the genius in learning n ur bends pfff soft distinction
I wonder how John Mayer would react to this if he saw this
Let's share and tag him
Salatiel Jyrus Tumanan hello it is I John Mayer I like this video
the musical guitar guitarist yes clearly this is not a joke
the musical guitar guitarist
yeah. it was.
the musical guitar guitarist very obvious my guy
This was really cool.
Tomo Fujita is an awesome guitar player & professor.
Tomo is amazing
I love you and tomo too!!
Just listening to that guy play is inspiring.
Finally. I found someone i can follow easily. Great video. Im sure im the only one to ask this but, could you possibly cover and do a video on Waylon Jennings playing? I love his sound. Much appreciated.
To ME personally, I can see how amazing you have gotten over the years. And it is, to ME, so humbling seeing you wanting to make your teacher proud and to demonstrate that you have taken his lessons and made them your own. I appreciate your content man! Way to go!!!
"Harder to play slowly, than quick" interesting!
its crazy because he's totally right
@@duckspy436 yeah, I've just never thought of it. Figured faster was "better"!
Literally every drummers nightmare is a slow tempo
@@TellaSignTV but have you talked to every drummer about this?!? (Sorry I couldn't resist)
Batio and Petrucci also said the same thing...
Good stuff!
He’s so good!!!!
Hahaha, I couldn't help but burst out laughing at Tomo's choice of lick every player should learn. I had heard of him before but completely forgot about him until I saw the video of him playing with Matt Schofield, Eric Gales and Josh Smith, but then I came away from that video amazed at how sophisticated and tasteful his playing was, and I learned that exact lick from the video! Powerful lick in context!
Even when the other guy plays the solo - Tomo still has more soul ! Cant practice that what Tomo got - its a gift!
oh man! didn't know tomo was your teacher. he rules!
