"PeerTube is an experimental decentralized federated video platform system that uses peer-to-peer technology to reduce load on individual servers. It's released as free software under the AGPLv3.0 licence. Started in 2015 by a single programmer, development of PeerTube is now supported by the French non-profit Framasoft. The aim is to provide an alternative to centralized platforms such as CZcams or Dailymotion." From PeerTube's Wikipedia page.

Im here after coppa
We are desperate for more competition to FB and CZcams
I have been slowly moving my presence; I have both a CZcams presence and a PeerTube presence. I post on both while prioritizing the federated version instead of the CZcams version. I have LBRY, as well, though since it uses blockchain technology, Gods forbid I was asked to take down a video. I prefer navigating the fediverse when I can, though I still use CZcams for the time being.
When the average person has a question or wants to search for something where do they start their search? Odds are it's either CZcams, a Google search, or a Facebook search. That's a tough cycle to break. Sure we know that Duck Duck Go is an option and places like Peertube are out there, but 90-95% of people have no idea. Even if you build an objectively better tool, I don't know how you get the word out that the standard way is not the only way.
Been using Bing.
What it's going to take is some youtubers with content that is compelling to the main stream adding exclusive content to another platform. "And if you like that, there's more over on my..." That would get the word out.
@@CraigTalbert You poor sod.
Creators should promote alternatives more if they think it would be benneficial to them.
Create some exclusive content that only will be available on the alternative site.
They all do it for patreon, why not for an alternative they support. Monopoly is not good for creators nor consumers..
Even if only tech related chanels would do it as they should understand better why it is important i think. Nothing wrong with a techbased (or another niche) video site. More smaller sites is a lot better.
Kinda like twitch which is mostly geared to gamers and only features gaming related content.
If youtubers get together and collectivly make a push for a different platform i am sure the chances for succes are not as bad as everyone seems to think.
@@thegardenofeatin5965 lol. If i only read your post before posting a reply to juan.. ahh well.
This is pretty accurate.
What we need is a Fediverse search engine, and then an extension for say, Chrome, or Edge, that allows for searching across both. Searx can do this, I think, but we still need the fediverse directory in order to make searching the Fediverse easier. we have a couple, but not enough.
Honestly, CZcams is a great service. That's the problem. It's awesome. The bad part is Google's creepiness, their heavy handed approach to censorship (which is totally understandable and its an incredibly difficult problem), their lack of quality control bloating the website, and their power. It's certainly a big pickle.
It will be useful during apocalypse.
Good luck for them...
CZcams certainly won't die that soon, there are too many videos on the site.
CZcams doesn't need to die. There just needs to be more then just youtube.
This comment aged well...
Well do I got news for you
@@sonicnerd21 Explain
good video..
lbry and dtube are also viable alternatives
Peertube is lacking some monetization through views, even though some of the instances have some pretty strict ideals and won't run ads out of respect for its users not everyone can afford hosting. Speaking of ads, did anyone else get a Suse ad before the video played? I usually skip ads but I actually sat down and watched it since it's a bit funny how a previously reviewed distro ran an ad for its enterprise edition.
Hosting is cheap though. It becomes expensive if you become really big and need a powerfull vps or dedicated server. but at that point you should really have an income stream build up, or ask your viewership to contribute. They allready do trough patreon, use that money for hosting if you dont wanna do ads.
You could start hosting at home at first even until you have a few thousand subscribers, then move to a cheap vps offered on hosting forums. Eventually you can move up to big hosting when you actually need it.
@@baronvonlimbourgh1716 hosting is not the only cost to creators
@@Hhhhhh-sz9ud no idea what this is about.. it's a 3 year old comment.
Why peertube still sucks is their registration process makes more than half of migrators not to migrate. I couldn't register there and left too.
Pu55y
Isn't this something like Soulseek P2P technology, man Soulseek is an oldie but goldie software and if this is based on same techonolgy I m more than an open to use it and share info about it because of P2P by itself it's rooted in open source/GNU philosophy. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and God bless you for your effort!!
The peertube software is now great. Its popularity is now up to us. Actually the popularity of the software is not the thing, but the freedom from big tech serfdom is. You create content terrain on their planet but they own it because its their planet. You are a serf on these big tech platforms and they can switch off 10 years of work in an instant. Peertube is the answer to big tech serfdom. We need a swarm of little tech entities to overcome big tech. But no individual entity needs to rival any onr of the big ones. Strength in numbers (of content deployments).
does it have app?
You can subscribe to PeerTube channels through the Newpipe app: newpipe.net
@@DePeaceHunter there's also grayjay (i think) but both of them are android only. Its weird that these apps cant make it on the ios platform. I dunno.
Theta is another good future video/streaming site.
Could you encrypt videos, host the encrypted vid on CZcams and stream in on peer tube?
CZcams is a "loss leader" like bananas and milk at the super market.
I didn't know bananas were subsidised? 🤔
@@hectorandem2944 They are. Just as milk
Used to be. I doubt they still are losing money on it.
@@hectorandem2944 and baked beans..
And most other things that are featured in the weekly discount.
I am never awesome!
Could be a trick.
No
There's 2 technical requirements for any competitors thay also must be met, it must have the performance and the UI. This goes for sites and software, google has the best UI and unless you copy it you will suck.
Are you on crack ???
I..like bittube ..bitchute ...superocho.org ....lbry. ... dtube.
Twitch could easily kill CZcams if it offers more privileges for the content creators and if it adds a CZcams-like video platform. By now, Twitch only cares about livestreaming, why not purely offline video uploading? A lot of CZcamsrs have opted for Twitch due to limitations, censorship, content quality, low privileges on CZcams.
I personally wish that Twitch becomes a CZcams alternative.
I don't. Twitch is so bad as a platform compared to CZcams.
I think the point is not having an emperor who dictates what can be said and shown - twitch is just replacing one emperor with another.
Benny Banger At least they'd be a competitor to CZcams, so hopefully CZcams would decide to make changes their users want.
@@DrewTNaylor CZcams won't make that changes. The creators and the content it wants were very transparent on CZcams Rewind.
Twitch cannot easily cannot easily challenge CZcams! I use CZcams as an extension of Google's search engine, I use it often as my primary search resource. I am aware of other search engines, but they are not up to the quality of Google. I feel comfortable with Google, even though I am aware they monitor my searches, my emails etc. Twitch is ok, but I find the platform cumbersome. CZcams has a far better chance of vanquishing Twitch, than the reverse. We are already familiar with the benefits YT, and the Google ecosystem is second to none. I even appreciated aspects of Google+, it added value to other Google products, but it was poorly presented. I am looking forward to what Google Stadia offers, I suspect it will be the prime Twitch rival.
My biggest gripe with the Fediverse (Peertube, Pleroma, Mastodon, Friendica, etc.) is that there is no easy way to monetize the service, with ads for example. I would love to see ads on these platforms, that would entice people to setup servers and lower the cost of service.
And the reason why Google are the biggest player when it comes to ads on the internet is simple: they have the best ads. They're short, well targeted, skippable, not intrusive.
please no ads. I would happily accept if chris did "hey our sponsor today is audible" but I don't like ads they add heavy bulk to js of websites, tracking etc. Also I don't see ads anyways, adblock and all
Advertising is the cancer within society. We do NOT need more of it.
I like bittube.tv ...bitchute ..lbry ...superocho.org .......
Why are they using CZcams then???
It's "free" to use
open source CRACK
Yes the best kind
Patreon could have been that alternative. But Patreon didn't wanted to be.
@0:04 Bitchute is already better. What is better than a peer to peer and Tor based video platform?
@2:14 Nah, you don't need to install anything to use Bitchute. :)
Bitchute is not Tor based & it's not good
Odysee is better & adds something,
Same with PeerTube
Why is the promo vid on peertube spoken in English by some Frenchman in accented English?? Its a put off....sounds weird.. Use a real English speaking person for English....and most human beings have no clue about instances feeds bits etc etc..yawn im already asleep trying to work it out.., they just want to upload and share thier content.. All too complicated to ever replace yotube type platforms
complicated like this what you mean
joinpeertube.org/instances
instances.joinpeertube.org/instances
Or maybe you're just a smoothbrain
