This is perhaps one of the best technique tutorials I have seen on this topic. Many are too overwrought with technique over observation, this strikes a very nice middle-ground between "too little" and "too much." Thank you.
Thank you Jacob. It was exactly my idea, I find that many people deem these techniques as "too hard" and never feel they can do perform them, I rather have everyone try their hand at these techniques and then go from there.
Thank you Carlos. This is easily one of the best tutorials on YT and personally I'd invested in products such as Mig, etc that have their place of course and that brought some level of success leaning toward what you impressively achieve but have been frustrated by the lack of depth in the final outcome. Your insight here blew me away and I've realised tonight, it's not the product but the application of oils in layers, highlights, lowlights that will give me the realism I desire. Amazing work and thanks again. Please post more videos. Best wishes.
I somewhat stumbled across your channel by accident - and I'm sure glad I did!!!! Your tutorials are very inspirational, this one on oils in particular was of great interest to me,
Phil Gregson Thank you Phil! You are too kind, they are a pleasure to make and all I can hope is that people can actually understand what I'm trying to say and convey. I'm glad they can be of use to you. :)
Awesome tutorial....I need to get the courage up to start working with oils on my models, make such a huge difference, giving models more realism, making them look very professional. Cheers, Martin : )
Thank you Martin! No need to have huge amounts of courage, just go and do it, if you make a mistake just clean it of with white spirit! The realism you mention is achieved with perfecting technique and layering, it is accessible to everyone that wishes to use such techniques. :)
Ostrich Longneck Thank you! They are indeed subtle, but if layered they can provide a lot of depth a richness to the model it all depends on how we use them and in that regard, the sky is the limit. :)
YES!!!!! Fantastic video. Ive just watched it and Im gonna watch it again. Normally I dont watch videos more than 5 minutes (get bored - low attention span), so thats really saying something! Beautiful model and beautifully filmed also, may I add.
Norm Lajoie Thank you for watching my friend! I'm glad the effects are actually perceivable, when I was recording I had no idea of how it was all being captured. You are too kind. :)
You are welcome my friend, I'm sorry I took so long to do this tutorial but only now it was possible. Thank you for watching and I hope it is useful. :)
Thank you Ian! I recommend purchasing any of the Michael Rinaldi's books where he really takes this technique through its paces! Just get started and experiment, you'll get the hang of it in no time. :)
Brilliant this has been useful I've been sitting on some oils and haven't had the courage to use it but this has given me a better insight in how to use the oils effective, thanks 😃
Wow a real nice tutorial, that help me a lot, your video is one of very rare videos its help me so much coz you explain step by step, and i can see you are a high grade modeler, thank you by a modeler from Germany
Awesome video Carlos :) I'm going to try some of these techniques on my latest panzer! The dusty effects you did on the sides and the shadows have an awesome effect.
Thanks Evan! You can do that and much more, do be afraid to try out new things. Just remember to be patient, this takes a lot of time but is well worth the extra work. :)
Liked your Ferdinand so much i went and got myself one. Now just need to get myself the same skill level as you to paint and weather it, sadly you can't buy that...pity. As always Carlos you do brilliant videos. I have learned a lot from you over the past year or so I have been modelling....Thank you
The meat starts at about 8:00 but... butthe Elefant at 0:20 is awesome work... been modelling armor for 40 years and not even close to this good. It takes a lot of practice and experimentation to get good at this
Good to see you back in the saddle again my friend :) I always enjoyed your how tos :):) Today I was able to find a great relief to a "life" problem. Worries aside, I may now find my mojo once again and get back at the bench. I miss it, it has been too long. That being said I will never allow modelling to interfere with life. Question? Do you apply washes afterwards or before? I know about layering and depth... just a simple Q. Keep 'em coming Carlos you are geting my juices flowing my friend. BTW today... vaping 1 Gov 0
Thank you very much my friend! Once again you are too kind. I hope all is well with you now and you get yourself back in the saddle again. If I'm honest I have to say that modeling is a central part of my life right now, whatever the future reserves for me I think modeling will be a part of it to a lesser or greater extent. I do the washes before and I seal them in with a light coat of satin before I do the oils. I didn't hear about what happened regarding vaping but I sincerely hope they finally realize that it is far better then cigarettes and stop the ridiculous smear campaigns the tobacco industry's been pushing! As for me I have stopped smoking completely about 2 months ago, let's see how it goes now. :) All the best my friend!
Carlos Mendes Thank you sir :) As I understand layering from your previous how tos (technique employed) I was doing them prior to the washes which of course will alter the effects of your weathering. This makes a lot of sense e.g building more depth to the layers. Wrt the other subject PM inbound :)
Very nice video. I see you are using the "students grade" winton series oils too...I bought my first winton oil too...They are not bad but they are a bit grainy...Whitch range you recomend?Winton or Artists S1 series? And now that I already have a winton oil can I mix it with the artists series? (all W&N brand) :)
Hi Carlos, thank you so much for a wonderful, informative video. You mention that you finish the model with a satin varnish before applying the oils. Can I please ask you which brand you use. Also, what do you use to clear coat the model when you are finished the whole process. Thank you, Stewart
Fantastiv video. I really, really need to try the oil paint rendering as Mike Rinaldi calls it. I have his books but am a proper old school dinosaur that is scared to try new fangled techniques!!!!!
Stevie Gibson Great video. Just watched it again. 3rd time! I tried the abreilung oil paints and they are fantastic. Just had a strange ide.....Im gonna really dilute some buff oil paint and spray it on like a filter. Yup...SPRAY it on! It could be great or it could be a disaster. Ill let you know.
Stevie Gibson ok.....diluted tiny tiny buff oil in low odour turps and sprayed on a heavy load, so it collected in the nooks n crannies. Waited for it to dry.....voila! Success.....looks great.
Hi Carlos, great video!! Just happened to run across it. I build only Luftwaffe aircraft and like using oils for washes. Do I assume correctly that you first apply Pledge or other clear coat first prior to oil washes and then apply a matte acrylic to seal the oil washes? I may have overlooked that in your video. Thanks again for the video - great job!
Very awesome tutorial. I've always uses oils as washes but never like you have done. I will definitely try it on my builds. You make them way too easy. Only question is how do you know what colors to use? It's always seem to stump me.
Thank you Mike! It is easy, you will see! I mainly use earth tones and the rest I use to get specific effects or to mix with the earth tones, it's an instinct you develop and of course logic plays a part in it so that we don't end up with a circus tank! :D

Nice! I've only used oil colours for panel lines so far. I never thought of using them this way. I love the subtle effects you achieve.
Ostrich Longneck Thank you! They are indeed subtle, but if layered they can provide a lot of depth a richness to the model it all depends on how we use them and in that regard, the sky is the limit. :)

hi Carlos, great video, can I ask a really dumb question, I assume you did this on top of a varnish coat, or was it on top of paint ?
Very nice method, thanks! :)
