With the millennium approaching, a series of disturbing signs suggests that Satan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has returned to Earth and is walking the streets of New York City. It seems that Satan needs to find a woman who will bear his child, as the time for the arrival of the anti-Christ draws near.

The iconography of Arch Angel St. Michael being the statue that he uses to slays satan is just amazing.
There is a simmilar statue in "my" church...maybe I should doing it...

In Catholic depictions, St. Michael is usually portrayed as the archangel who slays/apprehends Lucifer at the end of time.

Personally I think this film and Arnold's performance are criminally underrated. I loved this film as a teenager and think it holds up really well today, apart from some FX. Same goes for Last Action Hero.

Well Last Action Hero is very respected now by people it has a huge cult following this one though is more divisive people either have forgotten about it or they like it but don't love it. For me personally, I think it's a pretty good Arnold action Horror flick if you like Arnold I see no reason you wouldn't like this.
This movie truly did have one of Arnold’s most depressing and saddest themes if you truly stop to think about it. First, he loses his wife and daughter to a gang brought on by a hit man. He then loses faith and the belief about God. He then turns himself into a heavy alcoholic. Who has no idea what he’s about to get himself into. Then Satan comes to earth and Arnold gets caught up in the middle of a religious sacrament led by the devil and his worshippers. Satan tempts Jericho with his family that he would bring them back and then has to sacrifice himself onto the St. Michael’s Angel statue in order to save humanity.kind of Similar to how Jesus died on the cross for humanity. He then destroys Satan, sees his wife and daughter in the afterlife and then dies peacefully not in vain.

Well, not many people go through something like that and get redemption at the end, not to mention saving the entire human race in the process. Arnold's character was incredibly lucky.

Not only did this guy go against, but he also managed to resist the Devil at the last minute, ultimately thwarting his plan and defeating him - while being past his prime!
I always attributed that to the scene just before Satan arrived in the church. He took a moment to pray to the image of Christ. "Please God, give me strength." Then he managed to overpower Satan for just a few moments. Perhaps that is because God chose to answer his prayer.

You know, for its time the CGI wasn't too bad.
the train crash was all practical with minimal cgi.
Awesome movie. The graphics of the devil looks extremely real whoever the graphic engineer was that designed them with those graphics certainly knows what he was doing hats off to the graphic engineer.
Think about that for a second, CGI in 1999, despite running on the digital equivalent of the steam engine, looks better than what Marvel, a multi billion dollar company owned by a multi trillion dollar, company, puts in its movies today

Jericho did tell the devil to go to hell earlier in the movie. He ended up getting nearly strangled and thrown out of a window.

One of my favorite parts in this movie is when satan was showing him his family and he could have them back all he had to do was follow satan and he could have them back and when he didnt the devil replayed what happened to them when he no idea how brutal their murders were

I'm not much of a believer, but I love how God honor's Arnold's sacrifice by sending his wife and daughter back to Earth to lead him to Heaven. I like that.

Arnie defeated many villains in movies, some quite extremely hard to put down... but I think this is his epitome.
He does die in the end, true(this also being the only movie where Arnold plays a human character that dies)... but he defeats none other than the ultimate arch-enemy of God and the entire human race: Satan.
It's beyond expression how devastating human life truly is

Did Jericho really have to sacrifice himself? I mean it was mentioned that Satan had to plant his seed within the girl before midnight on the new millennium. All Jericho had to do was just resist a few more seconds and Satan would've been sent back to hell without Jericho having to sacrifice himself. 🤷
Did you pay attention to the movie? The devil possesed Jericho and it can't just removed it easily. You'll have to kill yourself in order to removed the demonic force in his body.

Yes lol in the alternate ending he actually did live after he kills himself God brings him back to life and he reunites with the girl. This ending was filmed in case audiences didn't like the sacrifice ending but in the end, they stuck to it and went with this OG ending. Truthfully all they had to do was bang the girl has to be a virgin so Satan can take her to bed. Had she and Arnold just slept together the devil loses movie over.
