I owned the original arcade game when it was released. Think it was around $1795. Had it in a TG&Y out front along with a few others my dad owned. Ultimately, I traded with my dad for a Cenipede I put in my dorm room.

That would be pretty cool. Did you play it all the time?

TM - Oh yes, I actually had a higher score than the national record early on as I figured out some tricks with gameplay. I had top ten scores in a few games, but never went through process to get them recognized. We’re talking early 1980s!
Remember, I played for free on many games my dad owned. Fun times my friend.

I remember they had a Gravitar in my dorm in the downstairs common area and coin door was broken open. Could play it for free too. One night, I started playing around 10pm and finally quit at around 7am the next morning. Same with my Robotron machine. Mastered it and could keep playing until I got tired. Funny thing is if you collect more than 255 men, it resets to 0 being an 8 bit system. Imagine my surprise the first time it happened. Was like, where the hell are all my men?!?!

Yeah, it would be fun to play them for free for sure. I bet you got some real high scores playing them for free since you can figure things out. The only game I figured out was Mr. Do! since me and my friend would play for hours at a local bar with his paperboy money.

@@KingEdAV Do you remember what your high score was back then? It would be cool, if you could try it again on an arcade machine or even just in MAME. ;)

You can kind of play this game on the insert coin screen. You can't control the ship but you can rapid fire if you want to.

I was playing with the joystick on my gamer mini. You cannot control the ship like a spinner can but it is still fun.

Just a small correction. Omega Race was released in 1981, not 1982. 1982 was the color vector era (Tempest color vector came out at the same time as Omega Race in the Fall of 1981 already).
Omega Race got inspired by Asteroids, but the design of the cabinet looks more like Asteroids Deluxe (1980) with a black light, gel plastic cover over the b&w screen to give it a specific color of the vectors and a projection mirror for the 3D effect. It was a top 10 money maker sometime during 1982-1983.
    Good times... :)
