学生の頃、「展覧会の絵」初演ツアーの演奏会に行った。メインは「展覧会の絵」だったが、前半のプログラムが「魔笛」「シャコンヌ」他何かの大曲だった。
当時は動画とかないので、初めて観た山下さんのロックギタリストのようなパフォーマンスにまず度肝を抜かれて、でも音楽と演奏がしっかりしてて感動したのを覚えている。終演後友人たちと出待ちをしてサインと握手してもらった。握手のとき手が震えているのがわかったが、それほど入魂の演奏だったのかと感心した。
その後、ギター部の部室で山下さんのパフォーマンスのマネだけが流行った（演奏技術は真似られないので）。

I can't imagine how he practice to have that ability. Classic guitar it's harddest instrument. Mestro Yamashita should filming his autobiography. how he practicing, who is the guitarist teacher, etc.

Oh! that's guitar Chaconne it is. beautiful, passionate. I hear Passaglia rhythm has come from ancient Spanish slow dance music. Szigeti said to me that variation must have the firm regulation. which mean I would feel that every 4 bars has to be taken in strict control which is dominate by tempo. yeah! on the other hand Beethoven said "Tempo is Music." Passacaglia rhythm is a little bit difficult to play for Asian people, that's because the length of dotted quoter note and 8 note after the dotted quoter note is so mysterious. And when we get over every bars, breathing is so mysterious. Music comes from tempo.(91yrs.Japanese) sorry strange English.
Thank you! I was hearing ~Spain~ at the heart of this and wondering why I had never heard the connection before, it was just so right. Now I know what the connection is, but why do other performers not make that living connection? Or have I only now discovered it thanks to this performance? Are there other guitarists you know of whose performance have this?
Such passion and commitment. A great range of expression and dynamic. A Virtuoso's enthusiasm for the technique and an organist like view of the scale of the work. Here we are 50 yrs later talking about this !
This is such a powerful, pasionnate and rythmically rich piece.
It makes perfect sense to play it with panache, passion, and don't find silly excuses to kill the tempo, make use of excessive of rubato for no reason or slower down virtuosic passages that were intended to be played fast.
Almost every performance of the Ciaconna just copy other performances without concrete analysis of Bach's counterpoint and emphasis on the dance. This one doesn't copy others, it's personnal, it's pretty enjoyable.

There's something so titanic, about Yamashita's performances at that point in his career that renders all the usual discussions regarding interpretation superfluous and banal. It's a "happening" and let's not sully it with analysis.
He never cared for the "academic" opinion wether about his music interpretation choices or his manerisms while playing (head bopping, etc). A true individual amongst cookie cutter classical guitar players and a top tier virtuoso who must have practice his ass off day and night to achieve such ability.
Titanic! YES! I kept thinking MONUMENTAL . . . it contains such incredible scale, from the cricket to the thunder cloud, to the planet Jupiter. Some of the most moving Bach I have heard, regardless of instrument.
This is incredible to see this footage in better quality!!! Now where is the Mussorgsky???????
