Running my first 50k tomorrow. I watched your channel for awhile now. First time watching this one. Thank you for sharing your love of running. I used to be competitive but lost running about 15 years ago. These past 5 months of picking it back up has made me feel whole again.

I hope the 50k went well Chase! Did you enjoy it? Tempted to go for something longer?

@@jamesday1 It went well. Bonk around mile 22 - 25 but my body snapped out of it. Doing the Oklahoma City Marathon in April. I’m looking at a 50k in June in Arkansas. Next year I want to do a 50 miler and keep building from there to eventually do a 100 miler. Wife wants me to UTMB when I turn 40 in 3 years as my birthday gift to myself.

@@chasewade6482 Amazing! Congrats! Bonking is always a risk when you're pushing. Just comes down to pacing and calories. UTMB would be epic. I'm currently trying to figure out how to get ready for a race like that. Definitely not quite ready for 3-40 hours in the mountains yet 😅

You had a really good pace considering the elevation gain. I’m about to run a very similar race in a month so I’m curious what kind of placing you got at a 10 minute mile pace??

Thanks Brandon. My approach was to run no faster than 8min/mile pace and run the uphills where possible. This was generally around 11-12min/mile pace. You can see my effort on strava if you want to see how I paced it in detail (my channel has a link to my strava activities and you can search Hurtwood 50k).
You can find formulas online on how to adjust your pace for hills. Runners World did an article on it called "Downhill All the Way: How much do hilly courses really speed you up or slow you down?". Personally I find these are often a bit conservative. I tend to run slower than they predict on the uphills and faster on the downhills.
