This performance’s splendor of words can not arrive The wonderfulness of her beautiful singing voice full of sadness and grief Ìs out of this world, and off the charts, and touches my heart, and stains in my heart
Where has he gone my dearest son? Killed by the harsh enemy, perhaps, in the rebellion. You bad people In the name of the Holy God Tell me why you killed My dear son. Never more Will I have his protection Even if i weep My old eyes away Or if my bitter tears were to make another Son. They would not bring back my son to life. He likes in the grave I know not where though I ask people everywhere perhaps the poor boy lies in a rough trench instead of lying, as he might in a warm bed. Sing for him. Little song-birds of God. For his mother cannot find him. And God's little flowers. May you bloom all around So that my son May sleep happy.
Thanks for translation from Polish but instead of "were to make another Son" should be "were to make another Oder" It's a name of river in south-west Poland.

R. S. Wow , I hadn’t heard this in years and when it came up in the movie I was gasping and then crying . An extraordinary piece of music. Terrence Malick is a genius for including classical pieces in his movies . Blessings to you .

dont think there is a bad version but for me the London Sinfonietta/Dawn Upshaw/David Zinman one is way out in front. Dawn Upshaw's voice is unbelievable.. do try it if you havn't already

For 25+ years I would have agreed, but no longer, not since hearing this performed yesterday in Boston, with Aleksandra Kurzak soloist (Polish). I am spoiled for life. I am now convinced after listening tonight to this movement with Joanna Koslowska soloist (also Polish) sounding very much like Aleksandra's interpretation (as led by Giancarlo Guerrera) that only a Polish voice will do. There is a depth here, a resonance with the intent of Górecki (Polish composer) that Dawn Upshaw completely missed. Her voice overpowered the music, and that was never intended. Both Kurzak and Koslowska take the highest notes gently, heartbreakingly gently, and quietly, not loudly. It's an exquisiteness that I didn't know was missing, on my Upshaw recording, until now.
A long time ago I came to hear the Symphony Sorrowful songs by from Henryk Gorecki. Recentley I've discovered: Beth Gibbons: czcams.com/video/-YlGYxCSDJU/video.html ... crying all over agian. So real!
That scene in The Crown with this song was just mesmerizing

From time to time I hear this masterpiece... always lovely !!!
Beautiful music included in two of my favorites movies : La Grande Bellezza - Paolo Sorrentino (2013) and A Hidden Life - Terrence Malick (2019)
I can easy go to repeat mode from 05:44 to 08:05 ! And repeat and repeat again... What an amazing thing.......

Where has he gone

Killed by the harsh enemy, perhaps,
in the rebellion.
You bad people
In the name of the Holy God
Tell me why you killed
My dear son.
Never more
Will I have his protection
Even if i weep
My old eyes away
Or if my bitter tears

They would not bring back
my son to life.
He likes in the grave
I know not where
though I ask people
everywhere
perhaps the poor boy
lies in a rough trench
instead of lying, as he might
in a warm bed.
Sing for him.
Little song-birds of God.
For his mother
cannot find him. And God's little flowers.
May you bloom all around
So that my son

Shouldn't it be"he lies in the grave" instead of ""he likes...

Jesce by synocka

Lezy on tam w grobie
A jo nie wiem kandy
Choc sie opytuja
Miedzy ludzmi wsandy
Moze nieborocek
Lezy kaj w dołecku
A mógłby se lygać
Na swoim przypiecku
Ej, ćwierkeycie mu tam

A ty, boze kwiecie
Kwitnijze w około
Niech sie synockowi
Choć lezy wesoło
