- Ok some more pandemic distraction for you - another one from the archives - sort of - I put together a series of these for the SMTV channel (no longer online) and I thought I would share with you another one of these directors commentaries - I LOVED doing them - so I hope you enjoy it. It gives you a real behind the scenes look at the making of a series like Survivorman.

Right?
@@FrankGarnerquadpcer What?
Me sitting on my couch, inhaling Doritos: "Ah, yes, scorpion holes. Gotta know what those look like when you're in the desert."
@MimmGigg And you sound like a rude person. He was making a joke... Chill out.
@@patrickdewhurst3378 it was a self depreciating joke dude...
@@joegarrison5911 Do you not see that the individual to whom I was speaking has since deleted his comment and wasn't the original poster?
I was fully aware of the joke. Another person (MimmGigg) was rude and so I defended the OP.
Before you jump down my throat, check who I was addressing.
@@patrickdewhurst3378 No I didn't see.that actually, my mistake.
@@joegarrison5911 Eh, its all good. Its better to accidently say something wrong because you are defending someone than to say nothing at all. I got you
The only legit survival show that ever aired. Hope he gets back on tv
See also Ray Mears
Alone seems legit
He filmed almost everything him self that's impressive
Maybe stay away from TV?? so he doesn't have to fight battles with the networks. Les way or the highway! non the less we agree on the fact we want MOAAAARRRRRRRRR!
Network TV is dying. He just needs to move entirely to youtube and or other streaming services (curiosity stream maybe).
Les,
I don't know if you actually read these comments, but I'd like you to know that everyone has heroes- superman, spiderman, batman, etc.
Survivorman was my hero. You helped me overcome a dark moment in my life when my mom passed away, and I was also going through a bad divorce not knowing that I'd be a single father soon.
Lots of soul searching solo camping/mountain biking trips helped me overcome the pain. I remember getting lost out in moab utah and the only knowledge I had to get back to the trail head was to head back east....using your analog watch method on finding one's bearings (point the hour hand to the sun. Between it and the minute hand 'noon' will give you a general south direction). That trick and the holding one's hand up to the sun to gauge how many hours of light one has left....those tips helped me find my way back. Back to safety; back to reality; and back to sanity.
Thank you
that is amazing, I hope I never have to use these tips myself . but I do go up north with my dad to the moose hunting camp near Matheson Ontario during the summer so... who knows, I might need those skills sometime.
Yep, he read your comment
Epic. I'm glad you found peace after the struggle.
@Asherah Les liked his comment.
He has touched so many of us in so many different ways! I love hearing other people’s stories.
Survivorman was my most favorite show on tv, the only thing that could surpass it, would be Less giving a live narration.
My favorite too cool man he is
Who's Less?
@@Vyselink Les Stroud is the best of the best survival Television and media personalities.
THAT is "who's les".
@@davearonow65 Apparently your powers of observation are lacking. I was mildly mocking Cool Hand's spelling of Stroud's first name as "Less". My quote was not "who's les" as you incorrectly quoted, but "Who's Less?", taking the misspelled version supplied by Cool Hand. Nice try though. B for effort. Unfortunately D for spelling and grammar and understanding of the source material.
@Jonathan see my above reply to davearonow
The mirror and the V trick! I used this when our boat ran out of gas on Lake Ontario. We radioed another person on the water to come tow us and as he was looking for us, he saw me flashing him from quite a distance away. Learned it on survivorman!
That's badass! Nice!👍👍👍
It's like my dad finally came back after he went to get cigarettes in the amazon 10 years ago
I lold i left
😅🤣🤣👍👍
😂😂
Yes!
😂😂😂
Throwing shade to bear Grylls haha haha. So glad he’s doing these. Miss Survivorman. Distracting me from what’s going on.
Miss Survivorman? Im pretty sure Les is a guy.
@@mreverly LOL! He meant "I miss Survivorman."
Bear grylls show is an educational survival show, not a survival whow. He reenacts surivial situations to show how to survive them. It says this in the disclaimer before every MvW show.
@@sethhowerton1489 It's not educational though, Bear Grylls does so many stupid things that would get you killed in real life. His is purely a drama show.
@@mattnar3865 Man vs Wild is really just entertainment when it comes down to it.
My request is for season 1 episode 8 - The plane crash. Absolutely loved that episode. The fact that you bailed on the whole broken arm thing made it that much more real for me. Such a memorable episode
That was the first episode I saw, was a fan instantly!
That is my favorite episode, I hope he does that one.
AGREED !!!!
He did that episode!
i remember that being the first episode i ever saw when i was a kid.
"I prefer the South Park version"
MUCH respect for that, Mr. Stroud! Just the way I like it!
"Some fake British tv survivor host" LOL Love that!
That heatstroke scene really did bring us into what you were feeling. Glad you worked to keep it in.
Used to read Lofty Wiseman's SAS survival guide as a kid. Never practiced, but I enjoyed the theory.
Came back from college in the late 00's and discovered SM. I remember thinking, "was this show made for me?"
Thanks, Les. I've read your book three times! 🙂
Wiseman's books were really good!
Question: What is recovery like immediately after a survival situation? How long does it take you to feel "normal" again? After starving and being dehydrated for a week, what sort of recovery "plan" would you recommend? I can't imagine it would do well to come back and immediately gorge on food and water. Do you even feel the urge to do that after being in survival mode?
Keep these coming Les!
Good question.
In more severe cases, one would require IV fluids and perhaps even more intense treatments depending on whether you were able to eat and drink anything at all during the ordeal. Dehydration is definitely more severe than hunger. If you can at least keep nutrients flowing, your stomach will shrink, and you'll probably need fluids to replenish calories, etc.. But if you can get enough water and remain hydrated, you won't need the fluids to help resupply oxygen to your brain. That's why staying hydrated is number 1 in any survival situation. Not an EMT or anything like that, no extensive medical training lol. But that's my understanding of it.
I've wanted to ask him that question for a long time thinking he'll never respond to that.
I think 7 days is the length of the show because it’s not long enough to have to hospitalize for refeeding as long as he stays hydrated.
I would routinely do this depletion of my bodies resources by binge drinking for a week. I found it it so hard to rehydrate and just get food into me. And that would be on a good day.
Thee best way I have found that works me is any kind of sports drink ie. Gatorade, vitamin water. And ever so crucial is fruits and veggies. No solid food for a couple days. Veggies rich homemade soup if I can get it down. Water if I can do it. Green tea and ginger teas are really good for essential nutrients. Fruit, most likely a smoothie. Even if I was violently puking ,try! Then the cramps from dehydration and puking so it's off and on puking and drinking water. It hurts very badly. I would not recommend this type of behavior to anyone. Alas it happens. And antacids for me are crucial. It hurts for days, your whole body. Because I wouldn't be eating much of anything for a week and then back to work for my week on. Very hard all around process. The cramps are unreal how they can emobilize you.
I figured it's relevant. If not, now have tips for binge drinking.
Goddamn it’s good to have so much content from you again Les
I wish he'd do more directors commentary episodes. Especially the one where he's on the island like Tom Hanks in that movie Castaway
Hell yeah. These director commentaries are so good.
For all you fans of Survivorman I highly recommend reading his book "Survive." Les does a great job explaining the psychological aspect of survival. He goes on to explain how important that aspect of survival is.
That was really nice. Woke up at 3am decided to just get out of bed and 30 min later I'm watching Les directors cut , kalahari. Thank you.
The thing that always struck me about this episode are the colors! The contrast between the red sand and blue sky is breathtaking.
50:18 lmao throwing shade at Bear Grylls. Love it.
Ah these director's commentaries are so awesome! You could schedule one and do a livestream event. You could have the chat going live during it for interaction. I think it might be a good idea to have moderation, but idk anything about that. Just an fwi.
Always a pleasure
Loved this show, broke my heart to see you tear apart a classic Toyota. Learned a lot though.
Watching these commentaries gives me the very strong impression that Les is a genuinely nice guy!
Les, you MUST do commentary on the episode where you spend the night in a tree trying not to get eaten by a tiger.
That episode was my all time fav. It gave me the willies fearing Survivorman would end up fighting for his life..
The episode when you eat a shaggymain mushroom and you say "if this isn't a shaggymain I'm dead"
This is still one of my favorite shows of all time hope to see you back on the air someday!
Les I always enjoyed your show, I used to watch with my kids when I was still home
This is the most hardcore shit I have ever seen on TV in my whole life. This guy really did it. He straight starved himself for many of these, going for 4 days without food. THE MOST EFFORT put into a TV show by far. How can anyone disagree? This dude legit starved himself on TV all while teaching us priceless things that could save our lives if we got stranded somewhere. Thank you Les Stroud.
The norway episode was so scary, like I've rewatched all episodes of Survivorman, but that Norway episode, when Les decides to head down the mountain, slippery, wet, cold... ough
Les i could watch these all day, I grew up watching these now at 30 years old and after a bit of military service behind me I think I’d be able to maintain my self in a bad situation fairly well, all of these episodes still stick with me, it’s incredible thanks for uploading
I love Les saying "you're allowed to ask me questions". I don't know why but I find the concept of someone afraid to ask Les questions funny. He seems like such a nice and genuine guy who loves to share his knowledge.
I remember this episode when it originally aired.
To this day, I think that scene in the truck (27:06 - 27:24) remains one of the most memorable and powerful 18 seconds of film I've ever seen. Quite scary, actually. Like inwardly staring death, squarely in the face.
Glad you won the fight to keep it in the final production.
These are great Les. Seriously, keep it up.
Thank you Les I have a beer every episode feels like we’re hanging out lol I appreciate you doing these episodes and i look forward to seeing more, keep it up!
That's a lot of cat Les! You're the man. Thanks for letting this battling man live vicariously through you sir.
I could not for the life of me, remember where I learned that pull the rope back through trick. Thought I learned in the scouts, but here you are, reminding me of a skill you taught me and I have used for years. Thank you Les, you have changed my life in more ways than just a knot.
This is just awesome of survivorman to do for us in these trying time's thank you it's the best
He mentioned he was going to do Utah!!Butch Cassidy and Sundance..i hope he deos do it.
@@normajean7332 sounds good 🙂
These have been amazing! I just started rewatching Survivorman and then I found this! Thank you!
These are great- I've always enjoyed your show. Phoned my brother last night and we laughed and talked about your escapades- like- yelling at the tv- "no you don't- no you don't eat those nasty goat brains- NOOOOO" LOL. It was great- we just kept going back and forth sharing memories. I never even knew he watched your show. Yes, please continue posting- really wonderful stuff. I'm looking forward to the one where your stuck in a truck on a road in the middle of nowhere and there's snow everywhere. I think you did it, or it was shown, right after a real life survival situation- man, wife and child hiked it out. They survived, but not as well as you did.
How does this not have millions of views?
People don't know what they're missing.
Thanks so much for this Survivorman!
Hey Les I love the swamp episode and would love to hear your commentary on it! Thanks for the vids man, best to you and your family, peace brother
Survivorman was also one of my favorite shows as a kid. I grew up with it. What a real gift to post this in youtube during the pandemic with no ads. Thank you for your teachings Les this is much more than entertainment to many of us!
I grew up watching you on tv and now I’m 25 and it’s good to see you again my friend. Hope you and your family are safe and everyone else out there peace and love brothers
I would like to see the car in Norway but honestly I would be happy with any of them
I agree living in Canada in snow country that could happen to any of us.
Earlier in this video he hinted that he would do the Norway one
Gotta love the action packed Norway episode
i watched your show everynight all the way through high school, must have watched every episode 4 or 5 times each. so glad i found your youtube
Same here, i taped and watched survivorman episodes over and over in my teens, it was almost meditative to watch and fueled my interest in going out bush for years to come.
I was really excited when you went from 7days to 10 days on your later shows. Just keep'em coming. I'm never tired of watching.
I use to get in arguments with a college buddy about who would win in a fight, Stroud or Grylls. I say Stroud. Either way, Less is way cooler!
Those are the fun times, ."I was still eating." LOL!
Thank you Les, you are a gem! Glad there were no cobras!
Awh, Peter was just enjoying the show (both on screen and live right in front of him)!
Another great commentary! Keep these coming brother
The Australian outback adventure, yabby's & witchity grubs, though you didn't starve,It wasn't peaches n' cream either! That would be cool to hear your critique on that one, especially the before/after planning, plane recovery, etc. This is Perfect Timing to do this & Thanks Alot for, doing this on CZcams! Awesome Good Stuff!!!
Richard Kibler I agree the Australian Outback was my absolute favorite and would love to hear commentary on it.
Hello Les. Thank you for everything! These are the absolute best! Please do a DC on Norway. That episode had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Im sure, I and many others will love a DC on that episode for the behind the scenes stuff.
Man have I missed you! Always impressed that you were able not only to survive but also make a really good show in the process. Really happy to see you back making content & doing well!
Les & crew, don't forget to run the footage of old 29.97i episodes through a deinterlacer (yielding 29.97p) or bob doubler (yielding 59.94p). The artifacts on this one from y'all running raw interlaced video into an MPEG compressor expecting progressive were highly distracting. That said, love the commentaries and please keep 'em up.
I live vicariously through you as I can't stand the taste of fish and watch you eat stuff I don't think I could ever. Love seeing a fellow Canadian who is a much better representation of our greatness than I could ever be.
I love the fact that he's putting out content again it's like I'm excited again to watch stuff like when there was a TV guide and the whole town was like waiting in anticipation for the new show to come out and then everybody talked about it when you had to blow in your video games to get them to work what I mean is long live Les Stroud
It's a nice walk down memory lane for me too. I have almost all of these Survivorman episodes but I really like the Directors cut versions. Looking forward to the next installment. Thx Les.
Lovin' the Directors Commentary! Thank you for all your efforts!
The south park version... amen brother!
Thank you Les. I stumbled upon your show in the first season and been hooked ever since. My family and I are really enjoying the commentary. Keep up the great work. Thank you again!
I love these Les, you are amazing! Everytime I heard that theme song as a young adult I was psyched. You inspired me to venture to the outdoors even though I had never done anything like that and my family wasn't big on it growing up. It wasn't until I was inspired by you that I slowly started trying bushcraft and outdoor adventures. Seeing these and explaining the backstories to the episodes is beyond awesome.
...so you had to do two of these in one trip - at least tell me there was a week or so of 'put food back in Les' between them...
Ok... to humor myself and possibly the creator and/or editor of this video, I'll try to ask a question pertaining to almost the opposite of this situation. Maybe stimulate some conversation, too.
Seeing the lack of water supply in this location made me think about where I live (the Pacific Northwest), and how often water becomes a problem, rather than a solution! Everything can be constantly wet around you, especially in the winter, making survival matters understandably difficult. Maintaining fires in order to keep yourself, clothing and equipment dry is seemingly essential... However, not always possible, especially when everything around you seems to be completely drenched.
My question is this: what are the small things that someone can do in order to stay dry in a wet (and non-tropical) climate, with limited preparation and supplies? Just like placing bags on the branches of trees, wrapping damp towels around the carotid arteries of the neck, and devising a proper pee-still in the Kalahari; how can someone at least try and help to keep the nearly-inevitable threat of hypothermia away with various methods to keep one's self dry, without a potential for fire, or prepared gear like a heavy-duty rain suit?
Perhaps I'm foolish enough to even know the very episode in which you relate this information, which I'm sure you have; nevertheless, everyone gets old, and may forget such survival essentials that they just don't practice every day! And as such; that may perchance be my next vote for your next live director's commentary.
...Then again, who the heck am I? Oh well, at least no one can say I didn't enjoy watching this. Cheers.
I used to watch Survivorman over and over again on Netflix. These commentaries are wonderful.
I grew up watching this show, and i am really glad to be able to not only watch it again but also see Les' Take on it as well.
The only show i remember is the one where he ate a mouse in a canyon
Les, there are a lot of men that would benefit from ‘surviving a divorce’. Something to think about!
I can do that one its simple it's Cheaper to Keep them 💰
These are great. It's nice to get some extra insight as to what you were going through during these shows. Watching these it's my first times hearing you speak outside of the Survivorman episodes and it's wonderful to see how genuine and real you are. I think that was part of what made the show so great. You weren't trying to be Mr. Tough guy out there to prove your manhood. You were out there teaching, showing your skills, showing your failures too. I'm certainly not an outdoor type person yet I've always found your show very gripping and educational to watch. Reaching an audience outside of who you might typically think would watch a survival show definitely means you produced it very well. Thanks for putting yourself out there for our entertainment and education.
Been alone for a long time and honestly, this is the only thing that keeps me going. Thank you less, without you I’d definitely not be here
When I first discovered Survivor Man 20 years ago or so, I've had an enriching and welcoming place to go regarding watching TV when I was a kid and my house was shit. Then, as I got to explore different places outdoors, Les was in my head to make me feel at ease with nature. Just watch out for bright colored bugs.
(I mean "when i first discovered" because now it's the second discovery of me as an adult watching Les a grown super man)
27:00 Anyone thats had heat exhaustion could feel that moment Les. I've nearly gotten there and I could really feel that struggle.
The way the heat just shuts the body down is really alarming. One minute you're just hot, the next minute your brain stops working and your eyes can't focus. Really scary when it happens.
Such a great relaxing and fun thing to watch during quarantine, Thank you for making them to watch with us! Would love to see you do this for the lost at sea episode, that one always struck me as one of the most intense. That crappy little raft always filling up with water...you bailing to sleep on the little camera boat in tow...the storms coming in and you losing contact with the ship watching you...crazy stuff, Looking forward for more!!
Also the episode in the jungle where you hear a jaguar sneaking around at the end.
Thank you so much for this Les! All of us laid off and stuck in side people really appreciate these videos! You’ve always been a role model of mine and the reason I love the outdoors now. Cheers!
I've just now come across your survivorman episodes, etc, and i couldn't be happier. Im a huge fan of yours for years now. I love it when you are out struggling, and then hit it huge. Like the four huge chars you caught while at the artic, and Norway when you came across the cabins and deer kill, then the last day in Norway when you found the vacation home. I was thrilled for you. There have been other big moments, but my guess is that those are your top three high points surviving. Is that the way you see it? God bless you Les, and thank you for all of the awesome journeys you've taken me and my grandson on
I really love these Director Commentary. I hope to see more of them. A playlist of them would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for posting these.
Les, you have been the benchmark and the originator of survival tv. I’ve seen every episode more than once and have always been a huge fan! Love you man!
These have been absolutely fantastic. Thank you! I sincerely appreciate your authentic approach and the respect you offer to the specifics of each location.
Top comment from this narration - different body types for different climates. So much truth.
Thanks, Les. It was great to see this again after all this time. More, please! How about some freezing weather stuff? Or perhaps animal encounters (what to do).
Hands down the greatest survivor show of all time. I always remembered this to be so authentic as you never had a crew with you and you would be all beat up by day 3 or 4. Unlike other shows where the survivor looked flawless like they were sleeping in a camper
I totally love the long cuts. It really brings the viewer in. I am glad you have the control to keep that kind of thing in.
These Directors Commentaries are great! Please keep them coming! I would love to see you do one on the plane crash episode. It is another one of my favorite ones.THANK YOU! for thinking of your fans like this during this crazy time!
“SURVIVOR MAN” is such a great show. It’s informative, original, VERY ENTERTAINING and a great all around show.
I learn something every time I’ve had the pleasure of tuning in. Les, thank you for all you do to bring, “US”, “SURVIVORMAN!!!”
Much Respect, Sir.
These are amazing! I recently started watching survivorman through from season one, so it’s awesome to be able to hear some of the stories/behind the scenes for the episodes. Keep doin your thing, Les!
It's really, really nice to have Peter Cliche watch the show with you in these director's commentaries. The soundtrack made by him along with Dan Colomby is truly beautiful and matches the show perfectly. I hope he and Dan appear more often in the commentaries!
Love your programs, Les! So glad I found you here. Enjoyed watching them when I found you on TV years ago! Keep it up! Thanks!!
Thanks, Les, I love hearing not only the commentary, but how you figured out camera shots and angles, but just the host of knowledge about surviving in places that seem totally inhospitable. I might be three years late, but even old Survivorman episodes are more entertaining than the sorry copies made by those other guys. You give out knowledge, freely. They give out bullshit. Alone is one of the worst, IMHO.
I remember finding you a few months ago and I’ve been hooked ever since, not to mention I went thru all the season’s in one sitting🤣🤣keel em comin Les💯💯💯🙏🏼🙏🏼❗️‼️❗️
Love to see you happy about doing this I hope that you continue making content! I am a big fan and look forward to every minute I can get! Would love to see you do more big foot type shows too btw😉
I grew up watching your show and practicing what you taught. I have spent countless nights hiking and camping on trails with my fellow brothers in the BSA. I cherish my skills of the outdoors and survival and will teach them too my children. One of my favorite episodes was you in the CO Rockies. Personally the topography is breathtaking, and time stands still when you take a half-full breathe at the top of a mountain.
Really LOVE these commentaries!! Thank you so much and I hope we see more.
THANKS LES!! I watched every episode a dozen times, a dozen years ago. This is great!
Thank you very much for you work Les. This videos came at right time. Always like your shows that show us a realistic point in survival situations! And now with live commentaries... just great!
It love this director's commentary so much. I feel like i know Les and that im watching Survivorman with him
i’ve binged every single one of these episodes in 2 days! please keep doing them! thank you for posting them free on youtube les.
Love ya Les big fan. So happy to revisit these with you, can't wait for the next.
love these directors commentaries, my absolute favorite.
As a fellow musician it's nice to hear about that side of the show. Always dug the music and felt it added a whole other dimension to the show
been watching you since i was a kid. 15 years later and im out there gettin it! love the outdoors and youre one of the reasons
